Seeing properties of USB drive attached to HomeHub...

I have a powered USB drive (160Gb) attached to USB port on my Home Hub 5.
This works fine as a network drive, accessible through Windows Explorer on all PC's attached to network. (Win7 and XP, Apple)
However, when I try to check the properties (free space etc.) using 'Properties' in Windows Explorer, I see 0GB ias size.
How do I check space used on this drive?

Have you tried mapping the share to a drive letter, and seeing if the size shows against the drive letter?
Use "map network drive", and map it to a spare drive letter.

  • Can't see shared Airport USB Drive on Network

I have a AirPort Extreme (5th Generation) with a USB drive attached. I am using OS 10.9.2 on my desktop and laptop. I can see the drive on my desktop Mac which has a ethernet connection to the Airport, but my laptop can't see the shared drive. I used Airport Utility (under "Disk" Tab) to Enable file sharing and share disks over WAN. I have set the "Secure Shared Disks" to "With a disk Password."  On the laptop, I have set Finder preferences to see "External disks."
However, the disk does not show up on the Finder sidebar under "Devices" or "Shared."
Any suggestions on how I can make this "Shared Drive" visible?
    Thanks,
    Dave

Also make sure that Finder Preferences is set to show Connected Servers on the desktop.
Restart the entire network as well by powering everything off, waiting a minute, then starting the modem first, followed by the next device connected to the modem, etc until everything is powered back up.

  • Windows Won't Boot With USB Drives Attached

I just installed Windows 7 on my Mac mini but it won't boot into Windows automatically if there are USB drives attached.  I have to hold down the option key at boot time and select the Windows partition manually for it to boot, unless I remove the USB drives first, then it will boot into Windows on its own.  Does anyone know how to fix this annoying problem?

Sounds like your mini is set to boot order: boot from USB first.
On a PC you could go into BIOS and change boot order and enable/disable USB booting.
Not sure why or what is on the USB bus, type of drive and device that could also make a difference (and not be universal to the Mini)

  • Sharing a USB drive attached to a Time Capsule

I attached a USB drive to my Time Capsule and want to share it with both Windows and Mac users on my network while not sharing my TC main drive which I use for backup.  Can someone assist in the setup?

Will I be able to backup wirelessly from my MacBook Pro?
yes. however, it is recommended that the initial backup is done using a hardwired connection.
Can I then also backup wired to my ethernet-connected iMac (at a faster speed) ?
    see above
In other words, the TIme Capsule is capable of automatically backing up both wired and wirelessly, right?
    yes.

  • USB drive attached to Airport Extreme as a time machine backup?

I have a WD 750gb external USB drive that I was using as a "time machine" with my iMac. My Airport Extreme has a USB port and I want to move the WD over to there, but continue to use it as time machine. Possible to do this? If yes, then how?
    Thanks much

You can, but Time Machine uses a disk image file for the Time Machine archive (instead of a folder) when a network drive is used. Therefore, you may have to start your Time Machine archive over again.
If you have one Mac to back up with Time Machine, it is better to leave the drive attached directly to the computer over USB. Your initial and hourly Time Machine backups will complete faster.

  • Windows XP and Windows 7 cannot see my WRT610N USB Drive

I have the WRT610N V2 router with current firmware.  I have tried a thumb drive and an IOMEGA 1tb drive.  In both cases the router sees the drive, allows me to create partitions, groups, and users but the computers in my home cannot see the drive.  I tried the Network wizard and explorer drive map option.  I even tried start/run typing wrt610n or \\wrt610n and I get network path cannot be found.  I have three computers in the house, one (XP) with Norton 360, one (XP) with SOFOS and one with no AV sw at all (Win7).  None of these can see the network path.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks
    Dan

To map the drive on your computer click on Start - RUN - type "\\192.168.1.1" and click ok... When prompted for Username and Password type "admin" and click ok... Now you will be able to see the folder which you have shared on  your router, right click on it and select "Map network drive" and click on finish.
Now it will map the drive on your computer and you should be able to transfer the file from your computer to the USB drive.

  • Problem in seeing new LaCie USB drive

Hi all, am looking for information related to the fact that my LaCie 320 gig USB drive will not show on the desktop. Sometimes it does appear to quickly vanish, often with an error message relating to inappropriate device removal, but of course I have not removed anything.
All started after 10.4.8, have reinstalled 10.4.8 as a combo update and repaired permissions over and over, restarted, removed power cable from back of Mac, disconnected all USB and Firewire ports, etc, etc. Nothing will make the Lacic stay mounted!! Am running Vista under BootCamp, but can't see why that would effect anything.
iMac 20" Intel Core 2 Duo, 250 gig HD, 1 gig Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   LaCie 320 gig and LaCie 80 gig EHD's. Running XP via Boot Camp

    Ronald,
"Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM" may help you.

The other thing you can try is to test your LaCie drive using another Mac.

  • Seeing partitions on USB Drive in Finder

    Hi
    I have a PowerbookG4 (17", dual layer SD) with 1.5 GB RAM.
I bought 300 Gig Internal HDD and converted it to an external USB drive using a MadDog Combo Case.
Last evening, I partitioned the HDD into 6 partitions.
The issue is I see only 5 of these partitions in the left panel of the Finder window, while I see all the 6 partitions mounted on my desktop. The "missing" partition is named "My Music"

Select the My Music partition on the desktop and drag it into the sidebar on the left. Alternatively, you can choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on Sidebar, and put a check mark in the box Hard disks.

  • Accessing a USB drive attached to ISP gateway which is behind an Airport Express acting as a router

I have a Fritzbox 7362 SL provided to me by my (German) ISP, my German is not very good, so I am struggling with the documentation for the device.
A useful feature is its ability to accept USB drives or thumbdrives which is marketed as a 'NAS' drive. So far I am able to access the attached thumb drive through the browser interface, but I am having trouble figuring out how to transfer files on to the thumb drive without removing it from the gateway and plugging it in to my MBP - the WiFi on the gateway is switched off and an Airport Express is the only wireless router in operation at the moment.
The thumb drive shows in Finder, but clicking on it brings up the PC icon which normally shows for non Macs on the same network, then it tries to connect, but the only message that comes back is 'connection failed'. Clicking on the 'Connect As' button brings up the 'Guest' or 'Registered User' options, neither of which work. What Name / Password do I need to connect? The server is called 'fritz-nas' At present my name as it appears on my Mac user account shows up in the Name field.

All that I can provide is what has worked for me for years.
The Time Capsule is setup as the router for the network, connected to a simple Zoom 5431J cable modem.
Static Internet IP connection from the cable provider is 12.34.567.89
By default, the Time Capsule is at 10.0.1.1 on the local network
Port Mapping setup for the Time Capsule is......
    Public UDP Port 8884
    Public TCP Ports 8884
    Private IP 10.0.1.1
    Private UDP 548
    Private TCP 548
The hard drive on the Time Capsule is accessed from a remote location at afp://12.34.567.89:8884
The AirPort Extreme is connected by Ethernet to the Time Capsule and is it setup to operate in Bridge Mode
The AirPort Extreme always receives a reserved local IP address of 10.0.1.2 from the Time Capsule
The Port Mapping setup (on the Time Capsule) looks like this for the AirPort Extreme.......
    Public UDP Port 8888
    Public TCP Port 8888
    Private IP  10.0.1.2
    Private UDP 548
    Private TCP 548
The USB hard drive connected to the AirPort Extreme is accessed from a remote location at afp://12.34.567.89:8888
If you are still having difficulty, I would delete all of Port Mapping settings on the Time Capsule and Update the Time Capsule. Then, go back and setup the Port Mapping for the Time Capsule, check that to make sure that it is working, then setup the Port Mapping settings on the Time Capsule for the AirPort Extreme.

  • ? Command to Mount USB drive attached to Time Capsule ?

Looking for the terminal commands that would let me mount and unmount the USB drive I have attached to my Time Capsule so that I can have a shell script to mount the drive, RSync some folders, and then eject/unmount the drive.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Time Machine doesn't see the WD Hard drive attached to the AEBS

I've been having issues of dropped connections with my WD HD connected to the AEBS vis USB. My backups have been failing and I sometimes get this error message:
The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again.
I wouldn't mind if I had to start over by trashing prefs but, in the Time Machine preference window I can't select the HD connected to AEBS as it doesn't show in the Change Disk window.

I'm having an issue with my external HD not being recognized as a drive for Time Machine. Is it because it's NTFS formatted?
Yes. It must use either the GUID (preferred for Intel) or +Apple Partition Map+ (preferred for PPC Macs) *Partition Map Scheme,* and the +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ Format.
Is there anything I can do?
Yes. Make two (or more) partitions, which you should do anyway if you want to put anything on the drive besides TM backups. Use the first for TM, format the other(s) however you want. See item #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Also, should I be able to create a back up file on the internal drive? Not even that drive appears in the list.
Not in the same partition as OSX. You could make a second partition there, but you'd get a warning from TM reminding you that it's not a good idea to have your originals and backups on the same drive.
Sorry for noob style questions- I never bothered with TM before, and having my other MBP stolen has led me to want to use it....

  • Time Machine doesn't see the WD Hard drive attached to the Extreme Base Sta

All of a sudden I can't get Time Machine to recognize the drive that's been attached to the Base Station.
It doesn't show up in Browse other time machine disks or, when I go to choose a back up disk.
    What's going on?

Try connecting it directly to your Mac. If it still doesn't appear, see if Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) can see it. If not, and it has a separate power supply, that may be the problem. Otherwise, you need to go disk shopping.
If the Mac does see it when directly-attached (don't try to do anything with it), then the problem must be in the AEBS, communications, security, or network. For that, you may do better in the Airport and Time Capsule forums, hiding in the +Digital Life Section+ at: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=140

  • I can not see my Seagate Extreme driver attached to the Airport from XP

I have a Seagate drive connected to the Airport USB port. I can see the drive from the Airport Utility but I can't even see it in XP.
I have tried mapping a drive \\10.0.1.1\Seagate Backup+ Desk 0342 (and lots of variations)
and I have tried \\10.0.1.1 from the run window.
    Any ideas?

What model airport with what firmware??
    Seagate Backup+ Desk 0342
This is not a valid network name. Please change the share name of the seagate disk to something simple.. like seagate.
    \\10.0.1.1 from the run window.
Do you have airport utility for windows installed.. this will make life much easier.
Are you using wireless?? Do you have internet via the AE?
In windows explorer type the address as you did in run.. if it doesn't connect are you sure you have the IP correct?
Please ping it from the command window.
If it responds to pings but you still cannot open it.. Airport utility can open the AE, then the firewall is set .. turn off all the firewalls.
What format do you have on the disk? Can you see the drive and access it from a Mac??

  • Don't see files on USB Drive connected to Airport Extreme

I just connected an external drive to my Airport Extreme via USB. It appears as a shared device in the finder sidebar. When I select it, none of the files that reside on the drive appear. It is a 1TB drive with 600GB of files on it, but none of the files show up, only a folder with the drive name. I open the folder and it is empty. The folder window shows 300 GB available. How do I make the existing files visible?

    Thanks for the info.
Were you using the drive for Time Machine backups, by chance? Time Machine backups are stored in a different format when the disk is connected directly to a computer. So, you won't be able to continue to use the old backups when the drive location is changed.
You might want to check the drive by connecting directly to your Mac and running Disk Utility to "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" if indicated.
Even if the drive has it's own power supply, a powered USB hub is usually needed on the AirPort Extreme because the power at the USB port is quite limited.
