Seeking a quality (not necessarily the best) mic for my DVX 100B

Hello All,
I work for a hunger relief organization. I spend a good deal of time out on the street interviewing people seeking food assistance. I make short documentaries about their experiences, and share them with our community at presentations. I work with FCP for editing. I have found that the mic that comes with the DVX 100B is just fine for one-on-one interviews in quiet environments, but when I'm outside with people talking and milling about, it's really tough to get good quality sound. I own a lav, but as I'm shooting documentary style, the process of attaching the mic usually (always) kills the moment.
So, I'd like to get a shotgun mic, but would prefer not to break the bank. I suppose a decent out-the-door price range would be $500 to $700. I've scoured the web for reviews, but they're pretty thin. Your thoughts for my price range would be appreciated.
Thanks.
DG

That built-in mic is terrible for anything.
Sennheiser ME66. Bullet proof. Good for darn near anything too. Take it off the cam, put it on a mic stand and now you have a great interview mic. I love my ME66, I can't ever use my DVX without it.

  • Best Mic for Moving Target

I am doing remote podcast interviews. I have two small desktop stands, the recorder, but need a couple of durable mics. I was considering 2 SM57s or 58s, but thought I would ask everyone here for a little advice first.
Price range up to $200 each.
    Needs to endure road conditions.
Needs to be able to record voice only.
Users are not pros, so will tend to move around (sit back etc)
    Noisy background sometimes.
Let me know what would be the best mic for these parameters.
    Thanks!

That was very helpful. Mostly because it just confirms the use of the 58s. Just wanted to make sure I did not miss another that might be a better choice. Thanks WH!
You're welcome. Glad to add my 2.7 cents worth (inflation).
Many big podcasters have gone with headset or lavaliere mics.
A good headset mic can work well for an interview (it will stay the same distance away from the speaker).
As for a lavaliere, I know they are used on TV a lot.
However, for amateur interviewees, it may not be a good choice. My advice is to avoid the temptation to use lavaliere microphones, at least for interview recording. Clipped to a lapel, or hanging around the neck, the lav mic is in a less-than-ideal position for good voice pick-up. Additionally, if the subject is moving around, clothes and cables will likely add unacceptable noise.

  • What's the best setting for a best shades quality?

    Hi!
I would like to know what are the best codec and the best setting for a video with 1920x1080 of resolution.
I've tried them all but nothing because the shades...are not shades.
I want a video that is like a uncompressed video but lighter. Same quality, same shades.
I've tried with Canopus Lossless but the video is darker and huge (7 min for >17 gb),
then with Canopus HQ, same quality but a little bit lighter (6 gb),
I've tried with all of codecs and settings but I haven't found what I want.
Who can help me for the best settings for the best shades?
    Thanks so much.
    P.S: Sorry for my english!

I used the PNG codec but the video is too big.
New Question:  I've tried to encode the video with Canopus HQ but to 720p and now the video is more lighter, I wanted to upload it on YouTube but is not compatible with the standards.
If I encode this video by changeing the codec to Microsoft Avi uncompressed, can I have the same quality and the same weight?

  • Anyone have any idea which is the best application for taking notes and essay writting?

im starting my first year of university and i was wondering what would the best application for taking notes on be? and also whats the easiest, most reliable and effective way to transfer documents off the ipad? Any thoughts on printing aswell?
will be appreciating all the help i can get!

You're going to get as many answers to that question as there are people to answer it. You don't state if you want to take handwritten notes or if you will be typing. For handwritten notes, I really like Noteshelf. It has lots of export options, my favorite being to Evernote (which you might want to look into as well for storage). For typing notes, I'd go with Pages, Documents to Go or QuickOffice. For working with PDFs, I like PDF Expert.
I've recently heard good things about Note Anytime. It is free for a limited time, so it'st probably worth downloading to try out.

  • " Why not Emacs Be the best editor for java"

    hai friends,
iam using emacs editor for java. i think it is the best editor for java available
    for free of cost.
we can easily customize it based on ur needs
we can even customize the compilation and run option with single key stroke.
and it has many interesting and useful features like shell, bsh, cvs customization, telnet
    and a lot more....
many software concerns had made emacs as thier offical java editor
i donot think anybody in this world who had used the emacs will go for some other editor
and i do want to know from u all that whether i was wrong . and
is there any other editor which can be better than emacs
if so give me valid reasons
get back to me if u are not aware of emacs features
    regards
    g.kamal

I agree with you 100% on linux side, but in
windows(tm) there are even better editors. I
personally use MED in windows. After trying dozens of
different editors in linux I ended up using emacs, it
sure is the best editor in linux (for Java atleast).
There are still some things bugging me, for an example
I would like the "end" button to move the cursor to
the end of the line instead of EOF.
I donot understand why ur saying that the "end" button is not moving the cursor to the
    end of the line
it works fine in my machine
plz elaborate what more features u want, bcas it may be there in emacs , but u may not have that
    much awareness in it.
    regards
    kamal

  • Suggestions about the best tool for quality check for an ADF application

    Hi All,
I need a few suggestions about the best tool for quality check in our ADF applicaiton.
ours is a small size WebCenter Portal application which neither uses any task flows nor consumes any portlets.
It has many jspx pages that use ADF components like table etc, consume web services using web service clients, and has some java classes.
We have come across below option to implement the code quality tools.
    1. Jdeveloper inbuilt Staus option in View tab
    2. PMD extension for Jdeveloper
    3. Red Samurai
Few more suggestions or best practices would be really helpful.
    Thanks,
    Usha

  • I'm looking for the best Mic in

I'm setting up an office-to-office videoconferencing system. I've got the video down, but I'm looking for the best audio I can get. The sound will be stereo output, but I need really good microphone input. Echo cancelling is a must, but the Windows XP echo cancellation sounds like a bad telephone connection. Does anyone have any ideas? Are any of the mic inputs better on one SoundBlaster than on the others?

what's the best antivirus for mac?? and also should i have one on my mac or not???

Mac's use a Unix based operating system and other controls that make it hostile for viruses to thrive.
However it's possible to carry Windows viruses to other Windows machines by a Mac, also there might be some corruption if your dealing with a lot of Windows files.
So all you really need is a scanner to run when you need it, something like the free ClamXav is good.
    http://www.clamxav.com/
Apple includes a anti-trojan/malicious program type anti-malware service built into all latest versions of OS X, it works and updates in the background.
There has been many attempts at trying to "trojan" or trick Mac users into installing rogue software on web pages. If you see soemthing like this, best to just Force Quit the browser by clicking on the Finder and selecting Force Quit from the menu.
A alternative browser like Firefox will offer more protection.
If you run your typical day to day operations on a Mac in what's called "Standard User", with a separate Admin User account, you'll need to update your Apple Menu > Software Update and your Apple Menu > System Preferences > Security > toggle the "Automatically Update Safe Downloads List" check box on/off about once a week.
Standard User provides more security restrictions, but is also designed not to intrude into those who are less capable use of the computer.
Third party plugins for your browser like Flash and Silverlight (used on Netflix) require a once a week check for updates.
Use a free service like the Mozilla browser check here:
    https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/
Always back up your personal data and never install programs that your not 100% you trust the source of.
If you have any questions or suspicions, simply ask the opinions of the more senior users here on this forum.
Good advice is not to install any anti-virus like Norton that demands the operating system remain a consistent state. Apple changes things all the time, which breaks software like Norton or OS X itself when a Software Update occurs.
There are two great free 3D games, simply search for: Nexiuz Classic and Cube 2 Sauerbraten.
If this information helped you, please click "Helpful" or "Solved" thank you.
Good Luck and enjoy your Mac.

  • HT5170 Why would I be getting this update if I am not, to the best of my knowledge, anyone's ARD client???

Why would I be getting this update if I am not, to the best of my knowledge, anyone's ARD client? I have not installed ARD in this computer, but am constantly getting permissions repair messages regarding remote management from Disk Utility. Very weird...

Yes, it's annoying but the messages are innocuous and you may ignore them. They will be repeated every time you repair permissions. The ARD client was installed by Software Update at some point in the past.
You don't need to repair permissions unless you've received a permissions error message from OS X.

  • Do any imacs come with a touch screen if not whats the best touch  screen for a 2012 13inch macbook air

Do any imacs come with a touch screen if not whats the best touch  screen for a 2012 13inch macbook air?
    Thx

    No they don't.
Apple's position is that touchscreens are for tablets and phones (in Apple's case the iPad and iPhone) and that OSX does not need a touchscreen - the trackpad and/or mouse is more flexible.
That may change in future but no one here knows.
In answer to your second question, there is NO touch screen available for the MacBook Air (2012 or any other vintage), nor for the MacBook Pro.  If you must have a touchscreen, consider an iPad with a stand and a wireless keyboard.  Alternatively, a Windows 8.1 laptop or desktop???

  • What is the best format for ripping CD's to get the best quality?

I'm sure this has been asked before but I wanted to see what was the latest thinking.  Any ideas of the additional Hard Drive usage?  Thanks

    mysteryroach wrote:
My questions are: What are the best settings for ripping cd's in the AAC format?
It is a matter of opinion, but I suggest 256 kb/s, CBR, and leave all other settings on automatic.
Will I be able to burn cd mixes with the tracks I import into itunes after importing using the AAC format?
Yes. Just put them in a playlist and burn.
Does the AAC format have VBR like the MP3 format?
Yes. You will see it as an option in the Import Settings.
Is there other ripping software such as dbPoweramp and Exact Audio Copy that does a better job ripping cd's in the AAC format?
EAC does a better job of correcting errors in damaged CDs, but for normal CDs iTunes does a fine job of ripping to AAC.

  • Find the Next available date which is not necessarily the Maximum Date

    Morning folks!
I am trying to find the next scheduled appointment date (Including any day after today) for a patient which may not be the maximum date for that person. I am trying to do this in Oracle Forms. My Query is working in SQL*Plus but is not working in Forms.
FUNCTION get_next_sched_date(P_PATIENT_ID in varchar2) RETURN DATE IS
      v_next_scheduled_date   patient_visit.target_date%TYPE;
    BEGIN
      select next_target_date into v_next_scheduled_date
      from   ( select v.*, max(target_date) over (partition by patient_id) max_target_date,
                           lead(target_date) over (partition by patient_id order by target_date) next_target_date
               from   patient_visit v)
      where  patient_id = P_PATIENT_ID
      and    next_target_date >= SYSDATE
      and    max_target_date > next_target_date;
      return( v_next_scheduled_date );
    EXCEPTION
       when NO_DATA_FOUND then
         return(NULL);
When I compile this in Oracle Forms, it gives me an Error.Encountered the symbol "(" when expecting one of the following: ,from.
I also noticed that Oracle Forms is not liking keywords such as LAG and LEAD. I am working on Oracle Forms 9i.
Any idea what I am doing wrong here? Thanks for listening to my Monday harping. :-)

    Thanks.
For now, I have another simpler solution. I was just curious if the first way would have worked.
    select MIN(target_date) into v_next_scheduled_date from patient_visit v1
    where  patient_id = P_PATIENT_ID
    and    target_date >= SYSDATE
    and    target_date <= (select MAX(target_date) from patient_visit v2
                           where  v2.patient_id = v1.patient_id);Edited by: Roxyrollers on Aug 27, 2012 9:16 AM
