Seeking a used CD/DVD drive for satelite 1700

Hi there,
I'm looking for a used CD/DVD maximum 24x speed, 8x speed, 5.25 inch drive for the Satelite S1700-500 Laptop.
If anyone has it or knows where to find one, please contact me!
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark
Stuff like this you can find on some online marketplace like ebay. There you can find a lot of used hardware components. Before you buy something check exactly which components will work properly with your notebook.
And now the final question. How you want to make that 5.25 inch drive works properly with your S1700?

  • 2011 MBP 13" using external DVD drive for Bootcamp

I am trying to install Windows 7 on my bootcamp partition via an external Samsung Slim Drive (I swapped my internal with another hard drive). Boot camp assistant recognizes the drive and windows disk in OSX and sets it as boot volume prior to rebooting.
PROBLEM: After reboot, my mac hangs at a DOS-like screen with a blinking underscore as if waiting for user input (which it doesn't allow). I've installed many times using this method, but this is the first time using the 2011 macbook pro. So I assume there may be an issue with the chipset or something?
I should also note that it *does show* up as bootable when I hold the alt/option key during boot.

I've researched this problem heavily and I think I've found the definitive answer.
The 2011 MBP will not install via bootcamp using ANY external device. Also reFIT does not work either, so don't waste your time there. At least it didnt' work for me.
The only way to install Win7 is with an internal disc drive, since that isn't possible I came up with an alternative.
What I did was install Win7 via bootcamp on another Mac machine, used WinClone to clone the Win7 partition, then I took that clone and transferred it to my MBP.
    This method worked perfectly.

  • Can I use my MacBook Pro as a DVD drive for my G5 to install an OS?

My G5 tower had died. I was asked to back up my drive and perform a format on it. I have transferred the files back onto the computer, but when I star up the computer it just blinks an old OS9 style folder with the finder face and then a question mark. The obvious action to take would be to install the original disks but the DVD drive has been not working for some time. Is there a way I can plug my MacBook Pro to my G5 tower and use the DVD drive from my MacBook Pro as an external disk drive. Or can I install the OS remotely from my MacBook Pro?
Any help would be appreciated because even though my G5 is old, I'd still like to have it as a back up computer.
    Regards

Connect the two computers with a FireWire cable, insert the installation disk into the MacBook Pro, start the MacBook Pro up with the T key held down, and install the OS.

  • Using an External Drive for Time Machine and Other Things

I have a 2TB external drive which I use for Time Machine Backups on my 2 macs. The macs have HDs of 500GB and 160GB so the external drive has ample space for backups.
Is it okay to use the external drive for other things that I don't care if they aren't backed up (like digital copies of DVDs)? i.e. Will Time Machine cause any issues if a drive is used for more than just Time Machine backups?

Maybe. See #1 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

It's best to put such things in their own partition. See #3 in the FAQ.
You may also want to make separate partitions for each Mac's backups, if you're backing-up either one directly (ie, not over your network). See #4 in the FAQ.

  • Optimal DVD drive for G3 beige, e.g. Pioneer DVR-110D

The CD RW drive in my beige DT is on its way out (it will get a directory of an audio CD but won't play audio CDs at all) and I'm thinking I might as well go for a DVD RW drive since they're only slightly more expensive than a CD RW. Many people in this forum seem to be going with the Pioneer 110D model Is this a reasonable choice? An earlier post on this forum mentioned a problem with waking from sleep (which I use) in OS 9 (which I use extensively). Has anybody else had this problem with this model?
One other thing I've read about the Pioneer 110D is inability to use it as "DVD-RAM", but one may be able to flash it to a 110 model. Is this something I even need to consider? I'm familiar with RAM but not in this particular context. Is this using the DVD drive with RW media as extra RAM similar to using a HD as extra RAM?
I've seen a number of issue posts regarding Sony drives. What about others such as Lite-On? I've checked xlr8yourmac.com but there isn't much on current model drives in beige G3s.
Along these lines, is Dragonburn software worth the small extra cost ($10) or should I just splash out for Toast ($90?)? Again, I'm mostly going to be using this with OS 9. Dragonburn seems to be supplied with both OS 9 and OS X versions on the CD whereas I doubt I could get both in one package with Toast (and maybe not OS 9 version at all).
    Thanks,
    Brian
    G3 beiges:DT, 9.2.2, 120GBide; DT, 9.2.2/OS X.3, 120GBide; MT, 8.6/9.2.2, 128MB,

My G3 is a G3 300 MT, 384 MB RAM, rev. 3. I've got the original 6 GB harddrive, and added a 120 GB Maxtor. The DVD-burner replaced the Apple CD-rom, and there's still the ZIP-drive.
I added a scsi adapter, and a USB 2.0 card. The first is connected to a RAID (7x9.2 GB scsi HD's) which is working in OS X, but not in OS 9. The second works in both X and 9, but my USB memorystick doesn't work in 9 for some reason. Not a biggie, but odd. A USB mouse works in both.
Apparently, the AHA-2940 UW only works in Windows, but I am able to use it in OS X, although the profiler doesn't show the correct model of the card.
    That enough?
One thing tho, this might be because a 300 MHz Mac is just not fast enough, or the original videocard not advanced enough (I suspect the latter), I have not been able so far to smoothly play movies on DVD on the Mac. It stutters a lot.

  • Recommend a good external DVD drive for Mac?

can anyone recommend a good external rewritable DVD drive for my EMac? i want something that will work with iDVD of course... thanks in advance.

LaCie is one. The Macally 500BC Firewire/USB 2.0 enclosure with a separate Pioneer S-Drive is another viable option.
I personally use multiple ADS Tech 1394 Pyro FW Enclosures with a Pioneer 110D S-Drive as well as a few ext. FW HD's and they all work well on mult. G4 systems (completely interchangeable via FW 400).
This link may help you to build your own S-Drive if you wish:

  • CD or DVD drives for a sat pro 6000

any one know if i can put a Model number SD-C2302 dvd player in to a sat pro 6000 lab top or no of any that i can put in please?

    Hi Adrian,
You are mostly correct in your statement about CD/DVD drives for your notebook. However, it is important that you only buy drives with dimensions similar to your current model.
Generally CD/DVD drives come in two varieties, those destined for tower type installation and those destined for notebooks. The latter are usually designated as 'slim' or 'slimfit'.
To install the new drive you usually need to unscrew and remove any fitting brackets used to anchor your drive to your notebook together with any plastic trim components. These will then need to be attached to your new drive.
Toshiba notebooks use various drives (Toshiba, TEAC, Mat****a, etc.) so you will generally have a reasonably wide variety to choose from.
Finally, you may need to download drivers for your new drive if none are provided or if your purchase an OEM version. These can be obtained from the drive manufacturers web-site.

  • DVD drives for an older powermac G4??

Is there a list somewhere of compatible DVD drives for an older Powermac G4? My brother wants to upgrade it and I have no idea what to do...help?

I'd recommend upgrading to a DVD±RW drive, rather than installing a new DVD-ROM drive or combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive. The Pioneer DVD burners are highly-recommended by Forum users, because of their native support within the Apple iApps (iTunes, iDVD, etc.) burning programs. You can get a good deal on one here, which is the same drive that's sold in Pioneer's retail packaging, carried by Best Buy, Micro Center, etc. Other branded drives may require the easy use of "PatchBurn," to create a drive support profile for them. I recently installed an 18x Memorex DVD±RW drive (manufactured by LG) in a B&W G3, and with the help of PatchBurn, it's natively recognized by OS X. Internal (ATAPI) DVD burners are available at electronics, office supply, and computer retail stores. Be aware that many major electronics manufacturers (HP, Sony, Memorex, etc.) outsource the production of their optical drives, so you're buying a rebranded drive. If you watch your local retailers' weekly sales, you can usually get a good deal on one for $40 or less. If you purchase from an online dealer, you can undoubtedly get it for less - such as the link I provided.

  • Will there be a hd dvd drive for the mac anytime soon?

is there going to be a hd dvd drive for th emac anytime soon? or will the release a firmware update possibly?....also can I use the x-box 360's hd drive with my powermac to watch hd movies

    Hi Parker,
Some friendly advice.. if you're just after points, or if you actually ask for them, perhaps you're looking at the purpose of these boards incorrectly. The boards are here to help fellow users of Apple products. The points are a nice reward, but they are optional. Mellow out and accept that you won't get points for every answer.
In this specific case, your first response was quite accurate and helpful, but the rest, in my opinion, were incorrect and based on insufficient knowledge of the subject. Additionally, in speculating about future Apple hardware releases, you may have actually breached the terms and conditions of use for these boards.
Just something to keep an eye on.

  • How to use the dvd drive...?

    Hi Guys,
Just bought my new 15" 2.53 Mhz Duo Core MacBook Pro a month ago but until now I haven't figured out how to use the DVD drive. Well I can't seem to find where it is actually... Does all MacBook Pro has dvd drive? Coz when I check back apple's website and look for the same macbook pro specification like my one, it has a dvd drive included so I thought my macbook has it for sure but can't or don't know how to use it... This is my first time to have an apple that's why...
    Hoping for your help..
    Thanks,
    Danny

    Hi there Danny.
I believe you are looking for the location of the DVD drive... right?
If you are looking at your computer while it is open, it should be on the right hand side... "under" the keyboard. There is a slit that allows the DVD to be inserted into the computer. I think if you start to insert a DVD in there (shiney side down) part way, it will suck it into the computer.
(note: I'm not exactly sure, because I use a 7 year old iBook that has a pop-out DVD tray... but I think it will suck it in for you)

  • How can I switch the region code on MBP w/ DVD drive for the 5th and final time?

How can I switch the region code on MBP w/ DVD drive for the 5th and final time? It brings up the window with that world map to do it, including the warning that "this is the 5th and final time I can do this", when inserting a DVD and opening "DVD Player", but it never executes my click on the "Change Drive Region" button prompt.
VLC or Quicktime Player won't play it either, but won't bring up that window to change Region Code anyway....
Otherwise, I'm not having any other issues with this MBP at all. Peak performance on all counts :-)
I tried resetting SMC after chatting w/ Apple Support, but it didn't help.
That was the link they provided. Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac
    Tried zapping PRAM as well.
    Thanks for any clues, Rene

Region encoding is the mechanism that enables motion picture studios to control the worldwide release of their movies. It is required by the DVD Forum (http://www.dvdforum.org/forum.shtml) in all commercial hardware DVD players. Every DVD-Video disc contains one byte of data representing a region code, which limits where the disc can be played.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
Once you have set the region in DVD Player five times it cannot be changed. However see this also:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25416?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Instead, use VLC to view videos from different regions:

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:
