Seeking comments about managing Oracle's Alert log

Good morning,
Alert logs can often be very useful.
I am forming the opinion that it would probably be a good idea to keep a backup of the alert logs for, maybe, a 3 to 6 months sliding window.
I would like to know the views of the forum members on the subject of alert log backups, including how long the backups (if any) are kept. Actual practice on the subject in production environments is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to comment on the subject,
John.

Hello Asif,
>
Yes , may be you need to open a SR in metalink and they may ask something old incident. For this reason you need to check the old alert log content. That's why I suggest to keep the alert log for production environment for 3/4 years.
>
I had not thought about someone asking for an incident that would be over a year old but, I can see that on occasion having the records might be useful.
>
Now a days storage are cheap so it's not that critical to store the alert log files.
>
I completely agree. I was more concerned about managing that many logs... on the other, they are just flat files, not that hard to manage.
Thank you,
John.

    I have One HP server running Oracle 10g on Redhat Enterprise Linux 3.0 and two other systems with Oracle 9i and 8i. I have written sql query in my Oracle10g system which updates the database in 9i.

    SELECT * FROM ADA@WCMMISLINK;
    CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW BGTABSNAP REFRESH FAST START WITH SYSDATE NEXT SYSDATE+1 AS
    SELECT * FROM BGTAB@WCMMISLIN;
    The above query is sheduled to run every day .
    and i get the following Alert log in 10g enterprise manager console

  • Alert log.xml or alert.log errors do not appear in EM

    Little puzzled here. Using 11.1.0.6 to test if alert errors will appear on 11.1.0.1 EM Grid pages. Simple ORA-1653 triggered via sql insert and then waited and waited. Nothing. I can use EM to open log file and to display the errors but no alerts are flagged on any of the pages.
    Is this a another bug?

    You can read all about how the 11g alert log is monitored in: Monitoring 11g Database Alert Log Errors in Enterprise Manager [ID 949858.1]
    Yes, it describes some bugs (and workarounds) too.

  • Job number from alert log file to information

    Hello!
    I have a question about job numbers in alert log file. Today one of our Oracle 10g R2 [10.2.0.4] RAC nodes crashed. After examining alert log file for one of the nodes I saw a lot of messages like:
    Tue Jul 26 11:52:43 2011
    Errors in file /u01/app/oracle/admin/zeme/bdump/zeme2_j002_28952.trc:
    ORA-12012: error on auto execute of job *20627358*
    ORA-12705: Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified
    Tue Jul 26 11:52:43 2011
    Errors in file /u01/app/oracle/admin/zeme/bdump/zeme2_j001_11018.trc:
    ORA-12012: error on auto execute of job *20627357*
    ORA-12705: Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified
    Tue Jul 26 11:52:43 2011
    Errors in file /u01/app/oracle/admin/zeme/bdump/zeme2_j000_9684.trc:
    ORA-12012: error on auto execute of job *20627342*
    ORA-12705: Cannot access NLS data files or invalid environment specified
    After examining trc files I have found no further information about error except session ids.
    My question is: how to find what job caused these messages to appear in alert log file.
    How do I map number in alert log file to some "real" information (owner, statement executed, schedule)?
    Marx.

    Sorry for the delay
    Try this to find the job :
    select job, what from dba_jobs ;
    How do I find NLS_LANG version?SQL> show parameter NLS_LANG
    Do you mean ALTER SESSION inside a job?I meant anywhere, but your question is better.
    ORA-12705 - Common Reasons and How to Resolve Them [ID 158654.1]
    If OS is Windows lookout for NLS_LANG=NA in the registry
    Is it possible you are doing this somewhere ?
    ALTER SESSION SET NLS_DATE_FORMAT = 'RRRR-MM-DD\"T\"HH24:MI:SS';NLS database settings are superseded by NLS instance settings
    SELECT * from NLS_SESSION_PARAMETERS;
    These are the settings used for the current SQL session.
    NLS_LANG could be set in a profile for example.
    NLS_LANG=_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1     ( correct )
    NLS_LANG=AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1 ( Incorrect )
    you need to set the "_" as separator.
    Windows
    set NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1
    Unix
    export NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1

    thanks.

    You can use the ADRCI to manage (purge,etc..) the logs of Oracle.

    hi, you should not do nothing with user root.
    please, don't use root again for weblogic administration.
    list all files with root permissions:
    move to Middleware Home, example: cd /u01/app/oracle/Middleware
    find . -user root
    if there are files with root permissions, change it to oracle:oinstall
    I saw this:
    Could not load Logmanager "oracle.core.ojdl.logging.ODLLogManager"
    java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: oracle.core.ojdl.logging.ODLLogManager
    Please check in DOMAIN_HOME/bin/setDomainEnv.sh file if exist this:
    JAVA_OPTIONS="-Djava.util.logging.manager=oracle.core.ojdl.logging.ODLLogManager ${JAVA_OPTIONS}"
    export JAVA_OPTIONS
    MWCONFIG_CLASSPATH=${FMWCONFIG_CLASSPATH}${CLASSPATHSEP}${COMMON_COMPONENTS_HOME}/modules/oracle.odl_11.1.1/ojdl.jar
    export FMWCONFIG_CLASSPATH
    if exist, replace for:
    JAVA_OPTIONS="${JAVA_OPTIONS}"
    export JAVA_OPTIONS
    if not existe, its necesary for you to use /prosun/jasper/org.apache.commons.logging_1.0.4.jar in your classpath?. If it isn't necesary delete it, and restart the AdminServer.

  • OEM doesn't display alert log

    Enterprise Manager stopped displaying alert log information. It displays the following:
    Number of Lines Displayed Error processing Alert Log
    The alert log is growing on the servers. This happened in both out production and development areas.
    Any feedback would be useful.
    thank you

    I have been going in and manually looking at the alert log. Our department has gotten used to using OEM. Starting and stopping both the agent and dbconsole have not worked. Our dev enviornment is Windows and I tried both starting and stopping by command line and Windows Services and neither have worked.

Personally, I prefer going through the alert log and keeping the important bits in the file only (remove the basic log switch information and other things).
    and in the folder containg the alert log file what are the other files and what are the purpose of those files.
    Alert log is located in the background dump destination. All background processes are also dumping the data in this folder. So unless there is a critical error in alert log which indicates the details to be present in a trace file, you can remove the unwanted files.

  • Grep in alert.log

    Hello, i want to grep the startup time from the Database in the alert.log
    But grep "Starting ORACLE instance" alert.log returns only the Starting String.
    I need also the Date line. Has anybody a solution with sed or awk where i can extract the Date line an the startup line from the Alert.log?
    regards
    Frank

    Take a look at the grep manual pages:
    OPTIONS
    -A NUM, --after-context=NUM
    Print NUM lines of trailing context after matching lines. Places a line containing -- between contigu-
    ous groups of matches.
    -B NUM, --before-context=NUM
    Print NUM lines of leading context before matching lines. Places a line containing -- between contigu-
    ous groups of matches.
    There are options which will grep After or Before the selected line.

    thanks for helpfull reply but I've found an answer for this question . so I share it to be useful.
    you can edit file bellow:
    /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/xen/xend/server/XMLRPCServer.py
    and change the value of host to "" . I mean:
    host = ""
    then change the following value in /etc/xen/xend-config.spx
    (xend-tcp-xmlrpc-server yes)
    (xend-tcp-xmlrpc-server-address '')
    (xend-tcp-xmlrpc-server-port 8006)
    this is minimum change that need to be done to use convirture to manage oracle vm 2.2
    I strongly recommend that you try using this free tool instead of vm manager

  • Alert Log Management

    Hi All
    My database is on Windows machine OS version MS Windows 2003 SP2 64 bit with genuine intel processor from EM 64T family. The alert log is expected to capture all error messages and for a DBA it points one of the most important trouble shooting areas if any problem with the database is referred to .. also does it grow continuously as the database ages in time ..
    Earlier on UNIX machines I used to backup the alert log file for future referance and then would trim the file size so that it wont grow beyond manageable limits.. I was using vi editor, cp command and other unix filters like head etc..
    but on windows we do not have the filters .. neither could I open the alert log file trim the top few lines and save it so that its size is still manageable by the os.. I am at the moment clueless as to how could I do this activity.. I was doing some google offlate and learnt that for listener log, we have some options like
    lsnrctl set file_name <NEW LOG FILE_NAME>
    to refresh the listener log to a new file and thus avoid it growing huge in size. Do we have any such fascility for managing alert log as well? It would not always be possible to shut down the database just to trim the alert log file.. and on windows I am not sure about other options..
    Thank you ..
    Sarat.

    Here is from a previous post:
    I've been managing Oracle database mostly on Linux for years. Now I'm in an all windows shop and need a script to check my alert logs. Batch programming is junk, can't be trusted, errorlevel is worthless, so I wrote this little program.
    This is the begining of alert_log_checker.vbs
    ' Check the alert log for errors, then send email and rename file
    ' takes the alert log location as the 1st parameter
    Set oArgs = WScript.Arguments
    ' Set this to the log you want to check for or pass it in. currently its passed in
    v_alert_log = oArgs(0)
    ' Set this to the text pattern you want to grep for
    v_pattern = "ORA-"
    v_mail_to = "[email protected]"

    ' Grep the log
    v_grepResults = GrepFile(v_alert_log,v_pattern)

  • Cloud Control 12c monitoring Oracle 11g Standard Edition alert.log

    Hi guys.
    I just installed Cloud Control 12c3 and added my cluster database, I have readed many papers, tech docs and tech discuss and now i have a huge confussion about packs, licensing and other fruits. Please help...
    I have four Oracle 11g databases (differents hosts) Standard Edition, and i want monitoring and notificate alert.log errors. For example, if alert.log says "ORA-01438, blablabla" i want a email notification.
    I read about packs, and says that "diagnostic pack" is needed for alert.log monitoring in Cloud Control 12c. But my version database is Standard Edition without packs, so I CAN'T MONITORING ALERT LOG!!!.
    Question:
      Do I really need Diagnostic Pack for monitoring alert.log with Cloud Control?
      If Diagnostinc Pack is not necessary, how can i monitoring alert.log?
    Thanks

    I do not think you require any pack for alert.log content monitoring but you might need to check with Oracle rep. I am saying so because if you go to the "Alert log content" page and click on management pack for this page, Grid will display a message that this page does not require any pack.
    Go to the Alert log content by "oracle database -> logs -> alert log contents"
    then
    go to SETUP -> management packs -> packs for this page
    You will see the message will be displayed " this pages does not require any pack"
    Can you also provide the doc where it says that this pae needs diagnostic pack?

  • Oracle troubleshooting when I have no info in the alert log

    Hello everyone,
    I'm running Oracle 10g on Solaris 10. I performed a restore yesterday, and my DB instance was running smoothly. This morning I discovered that Oracle died on me "silently", that is, nothing was recorded in the alert log - the last entry in the alert log was the end of the restore.
    No Oracle processes were running anymore on the machine, trying to log in via sqlplus issued the expected
    ORA-01034: ORACLE not available
    ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist
    The instance is running again after rebooting the machine.
    Can I find clues about the crash, as the alert log hasn't anything for me?
    Thank you,
    Adrian

    Thank you all for your ideas.
    I looked in the /var/adm/messages (there's also /var/log/sysmsg which might be of some help) and found out that the machine was rebooted. Apparently, the Oracle instance hasn't been started properly afterwards.
    The alert log mentions (before the crash) that 'alter database open resetlogs' was performed successfully, and I ran some applications after restore that accessed the DB - the instance was indeed running.
    There is no other alert log (my attempts to bring up the DB the next day are recorded in the same file).

  • Enterprise Manager Database Control Errors in Alert.log

    Hi all
    I'm posting it this forum because i think it is the best place to get some help, i suspect it is something in Entreprise Manager Database Console
    sometimes i get errors in Alert.log
    Errors in file e:\admin\orapd\udump\orapd_ora_3456.trc:
    ORA-25254: time-out in LISTEN while waiting for a message
    ORA-06512: at "SYS.DBMS_AQ", line 577
    ORA-06512: at "SYSMAN.EMD_NOTIFICATION", line 492
    ORA-06512: at line 1
    Generally this error is generated when the database is shutdow for backup (3 AM)
    In the shutdown script i terminate the DatabaseConsole service before i shutdown the database:

    My environment:

  • SMON ABOUT TO RECOVER UNDO SEGMENT s messages in alert log

    Problem
    ======
    There are lots of messages appearing in alert log of the following form:
    SMON: about to recover undo segment %s
    SMON: mark undo segment %s as available
    Reason
    ======
    When the recovery is going on after a abnormal shutdown. Cause These errors do not indicate rollback segment corruption. In oracle8i, this may becoz of problem with the "rollback_segments" parameter in the init.ora. where as in oracle9i, When the instance is shutdown, during the next startup instance recovery needs to take place.
    In AUM we do not have any control over which undo segments will brought online after the instance startup.When SMON finds such offline undo segments with transactions needing recovery ,then it does what is intended to do recovery.
    Solution
    ======
    with oracle8i, we need to cross check rollback_segments" parameter in the init.ora
    with oracle9i,
    first note down segment from SMON: mark undo segment %s as available
    sqlplus "/ as sysdba"
    alter session set "_smu_debug_mode"=4;
    alter rollback segment <offline segment name> online;
    e.g. alter rollback segment "_SYSSMU11$" online;
    Where 11 is the number that is appearing in the messages in the alert log.

    What's the point duplicate metalink doc here,
    SMON: ABOUT TO RECOVER UNDO SEGMENT %s messages in alert log
    Doc ID: Note:266159.1
    besides it's violation of Oracle support service contract.
