Seeking Feedback Concerning Media Archiving
Hello- I'm just looking for some feedback and second opinions for getting the most out of our archive solution which includes an Xserve and a Magnum 448, because right now I'm dealing with an archive solution that's a bit unstable, overly complicated, and seemingly not robust enough to assure it's a long-term archive/media solution.
Let me lay out some details and I'd like any opinions or tips for my situation:
I'm employed by a small video production company who have a large library of production masters (HDCAM and DVCPRO, 1000+ tapes total) that they needed backed up/archived. The choice was made to archive digitally (as opposed to physical tape duplicates), which entails capturing the footage in Final Cut Pro and then taking those raw media files and archiving them to LTO-4 cartridges and then restoring them when needed for editing, etc.
An Apple Xserve running Atempo's Time Navigator 4.2 to interface with a Magnum 448 was bought as the archive solution (a decision made before I was hired- but I am the primary engineer and operator now and have to play the hand I was dealt). The Xserve is also connected to a QLogic fibre switch which mediates data between the Xserve/Magnum, a hard drive server, and the workstations that capture and edit.
We've learned to make things work but the Time Navigator [TiNa] package is not very intuitive and sometimes limited in function for such a complicated interface:
-if files are archived incorrectly, you can't rename, delete, or designate them as faulted in anyway- they're stuck taking up storage space and in the catalog leaving the potential to restore bad footage
-there's lots of esoteric, manual operations, and modules in using TiNa even for the basics- a simpler, more self-contained, end-user friendly interface would be nicer
-searching for and selecting specific files can tedious and the 'find' function can be hit-or-miss
-TiNa doesn't state which cartridges it needs for a restore until the moment it begin to access the data from that particular cartridge- if that cartridge isn't in the library it ends the restore (unless you are watching the entire restore and/or quick enough to catch it and do some manual operations- otherwise it automatically times out)
-Alarms and errors can lack details (ex. "1 object(s) are not correct restored"... and then looking at the 'details' doesn't tell you the specific object/file that had the error)
Now I can deal with the Atempo software being unwieldy- but the more alarming issue is that after only a year of moderate use, there are alerts when restoring media that state- "Physical Error[s] were detected on [the] drive while reading media..." and certain files/tapes can't be restored (which will have to be recaptured- something that causes more wear an tear on the masters, which we want to avoid). This has happened with multiple cartridges and our cartridges have only had maybe had three uses in the Magnum's drive- once for the initial archive, then a restore or two.
These LTO-4 cartridges are supposed to be our long-term library and working media source; we're nearly done with capturing all the masters, which will be put into protective storage and we're planning on duplicating the LTO cartridges for safety's sake- but having media that's compromised for restoring and being unsure whether our backups are secure and usable is unacceptable.
So here are my basic questions and concerns:
Does anyone know what may cause or correct the 'physical errors' issue or any Atempo/Time Navigator/storage tips in general?
I asked Atempo support once and they said I should talk to Tandberg about the errors. I talked to Tandberg and they said it could be the LTO cartridges- but I've used both Quantum and Sony brand and have had the same issue. So I'm unassured the LTO-4 based solution is reliable at this time.
Is there any recommended software solutions besides Time Navigator that better fit our bill?
I basically want a software that backs up the media when I tell it and restores easily when we need it- with a catalog/directory that can be modified and corrected. I have no need for a daily, automated, date-based, data/file structure archive.
I've seen that Atempo offers 'Atempo Digital Archive', which may be closer to the mark than TiNa. I've also heard good things about PresSTORE.
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. If you've got any ideas or sympathies, I'm glad to hear them.
Hi Archimedes76,
I use windows media player to manage my music files. Regarding your music file info issue, sometimes I do have to restart my media hub so that it'll re-index the files especially if I transferred a lot of new media. If after a restart and waiting for a few hours while the media rescan and reindex files doesn't work for you then you might try to read this. I found it on the linksys support page though the example shown there is a windows PC.
Hope this helps!

HD Media Archival advice?
I'm soon to be the proud owner of a Sony EX1R which will shoot HD video to solid state media at 35Mbs. I want to get my storage scratch disk/archive system dialed now so I'm good to go when the camera arrives. I'm an independent videographer and I would like to have:
2TB for active projects
1TB for archived stock footage
So my questions is: Can I use Disk Utilities Raid options to build a Raid that would suit my purposes without buying a pre-configured standalone RAID system.? I would need all footage back-up all the time (mirrored?).
My current drive configurations is 3 external 1 TB drives daisy changed using FW400 and then FW800 into my Mac Pro (8Core 12GB Ram). My System and personal drives are all ready back-up up to an internal 1TB. I appreciate I'll need some more drives to make this work which isn't a problem and it will be cheaper than buying a self contained RAID from the likes of G-Tech.
Will through-put be an issue? I will only ever need to access media from one computer. Will the drives going to sleep be an issue? Will FW 400 be a bottleneck? Any help and advice on possible solutions would be appreciated. Thanks for the quick response. I won't be 'capturing' so much as 'log and transferring' as I'm shooting to SxS cards. Unfortunately my Mac Pro doesn't have eSata connection and my 1 TB drives only have eSata, FW400 and USB2. So maybe my best option is to just use my everyday back-up software (Memeo) and continue on as I have been. It backs up immediately which is cool.

Seeking feedback on components for a new budget build
Starting with my background: I guess I would qualify as a prosumer. My editing is going to be primarily single camera home movies, church events, whatnot. I had a short film in a festival once and am hoping to get back into that, but my stuff is usually talky dramas, so nothing terribly effects-heavy. My video is 1080/60p recorded to H.264 on SD cards, so I don't think I need a capture card. I cut my short on Final Cut, but my Mac can't handle the HD stuff and I can't justify the price of a new one, so I'm defecting back to the PC world. My budget is small (I'm hoping to keep the core components under $750, but that's somewhat flexible), so I'm looking for bang-for-buck type things. Since I'm not doing this for a living, I don't need to be in the top 20 on PPBM5, but I also don't want to have to sit all day. I've put together a PC before, but just for general use and almost a decade ago, so I know how to do it, but I'm out of touch with components until a few weeks ago when I started researching.
Here's what I'm looking at, though I'm open to any suggestions:
CPU: i7 960. (The Sandy Bridge stuff has scared me away from the 2600. This is only about $10 more than the 950 now - is it worth the upgrade?)
Mobo: Asus Sabertooth X58
RAM: Patriot Signature 1600 4 GB sticks (this seems like a better deal than the 1033 4 GB sticks with lower latency, but I don't know a ton about memory)
GPU: GTX 550 TI (I picked up on this from another thread here as a good bang-for-buck suggestion - I'd be open to spending less money if there's one that doesn't have a significant performance drop-off)
Boot Drive: Seagate Baracuda 1 TB 7200 6Gb/s (I feel pretty comfortable with the project disk setup, but I've read widely varying opinions about size/speed requirements for the boot drive. My biggest concern is using up one of my 6Gb/s slots if it's not going to add anything.)
PSU: 700W (the eXtreme calculator said that this would be plenty, though Newegg was suggesting 950W. Is that just because they're trying to sell me stuff?)
Case: NZXT GAMA-001
Am I missing anything for the tower (other than optical drive and project disks)?
Thanks for your help! Thanks! (Thanks also for the guides you wrote - they were indispensable in
getting me to this point.) Overclocking scares me a bit, so at this point I
don't plan on it, though I would consider it if the system doesn't perform
well.
I noticed that almost none of the other components (RAM, GPU, even Hard
Drive) were on Asus' official compatibility list. How much should I be
concerned about that? -

I’m working with a team exploring ways to improve your TAC Support experience. Several questions have come up that we would like customer/partner feedback on. Here’s the first one:
1. What data or information are you asked for repeatedly when working TAC cases that you wish Cisco would remember?
For each piece of data or information:
1a. Is that data or information specific to you (i.e. your id) or shared by your group (i.e. a topology) or everyone at your company (i.e. company size)
1b. How frequently does the data or information change?
I look forward to you input.
Best,
--MaryI would agree with Leo on this as well, but one thing to add. Based on the contract number it should show the installed site and the address where that piece of equipment is located. I try and keep that updated for all our equipment for that reason. Like Leo suggested, rather than TAC asking for the ship to information, it should just confirm the ship to address. I know that may seem minor but I don't remember all my locations addresses and if I am out of the office when TAC asks for the information it just delays the whole situation.
Something maybe to add.....If we could store say a parts list (like a Show Inventory output) for all of our equipment under our contracts that might also help TAC better understand what the setup is much quicker. Then with that information Cisco could use it to more accurately stage inventory for different regions.
One more thing...... TAC does a great job and keep up the great work.

X300 performance - seeking feedback and advice
How does the X300 perform with
XPSP2
vs.
Vista Business in not-fancy-Aero-graphics-mode ?
(please no blatant Vista bashing, am already familiar with it)
Assume 3GB of RAM and typical multi-task usage to be:
2 windows of Firefox, each with 6 tabs
5 tabs IE
Thunderbird
2 Excel spreadsheets
iTunes
Skype
Experienced feedback very much appreciated. I currently have a T60P Vista Biz with 2GB and can run the above acceptably.

I'm not quite sure if you realize that the Pentium M 2GHz can't be really compared(performance-wise) to the X300 CPU?
The X300 CPU is one of the latest Intel CPUs which aren't even officially available yet. It seems it is the same CPU Apple uses in the Macbook Air, just at a lower CPU frequency (1.2 instead of 1.6/1.8 GHz).
The Intel SL7100 dual core CPU has been optimized for the typical usage of video, office, etc.
In my opinion it can handle ANY load with the exception of 3D games.
The Intel X3100 graphics adapter also helps with video performance, it has aprox. 50% more punch than the well known Intel 945/950 chipset.
I'm running Vista Business with 3GB RAM, Aero is activate. At the same time, Norton Internet Security 2008 is running in the background with full realtime protection enabled. I played various video files using Amazon Unbox video client and iTunes, no stuttering, no issues at all, all the time played FULLSCREEN. The video files were played from a portable HDD, not the internal SSD, SSD playback should be even better(faster).
I'm also running MS Office 2007 Enterprise on my X300, again: no problems whatsoever.
That said, I think that the X300 can replace almost ANY previous laptop on the market with the exception of so called "gaming laptops" and/or laptops with special graphics adapters for architectural/design/etc. purposes.
X300 (6478-15G), Intel SL7100 CPU 1.2GHz and X3100 GPU, 3GB RAM, 64GB SSD, HSDPA, Vista Business 32bit, 6 cell and 3 cell bay battery -

Seeking Help Concerning the Audigy SE soundc
I had just recently purchased and Audigy SE card today, and I've been using the same computer for quite some time now. I have the same 3 back ports from my onboard soundcard on the front of my tower which allows me to plug-and-play easier. I contacted my computer's provider (Hewlett Packard) concerning my issue and they have pointed me in you guys' direction. Ok, here's my question, according to HP you guys are able to tell me exactly how to connect my front audio ports directly to my newly installed sound card and still allow for the same plug-and-play ease instead of connecting the microphone/headset logitech combo I have into the back every time I would like to use my microphone. Not sure if this is entirely true, but if anyone within the community has any suggestions / threads / links they could point me to to help me with this issue I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any responses!

Adobe seeking feedback about panels, palettes, workspaces, and other UI elements
Several folks within Adobe are discussing the user interfaces for our various applications, and we'd like your feedback.
Do you use After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Lightroom? Other Adobe applications?
If so, please post your comments on this forum thread comparing your experiences with the user interfaces of these applications.
Regarding the panels, palettes, workspaces, and overall UI paradigms in these applications: What do you like? What do you hate? Do you care that the applications are different in this regard? What differences do you even notice?Primarily using AE/PP with often PS as well, some illustrator.
I don't think the UI itself -- panels palettes workspaces etc -- need much work, they are overall greatly improved in the last 5+ years & for the most part much ahead of competition. More attention should probably be put into other items that need improved, many of which already came up listed here.
One thing, I wish text brightness was added as customizable as well as the UI slider; I don't like the text brightness on the lower and higher end of the slider, wish I could customize it.
BUG since as far as I can remember, maybe CS3 or earlier: workspaces need to remember multiple monitor setups!
The problem is, I snap off my timeline into a separate window, and make it full screen.
Now, if have an explorer/finder window open on the screen where the project & monitors panels where, everything opens fine & my full, double screen layout opens just as I left it.
However, if I open the project from the monitor that say, my full screen timeline is in, the project/monitor panels etc come up in that same screen, undernearth the timeline. So I have to nudge the timeline window down, and double click the primary premiere pro window, and for some reason that maximizes it to the other screen). Then bring my timeline window back into place.
For this reason alone I kind of like making a single window layout that's just 2-screens wide (Avid-esk), however, I run different resolutions on the monitor and this really complicates things if I'm trying to use all of my screenspace, when two or more monitors have different heights for resolution. Also, in this setup, all progress windows appear right in the middle, so it's split between the two monitors. This could be improved.
Another request would definitely be to make hotkeys and things like timeline navigation more universal among your apps. I run Avid+custom setup on my hotkeys in PP--I jump into AE, and every last button is different, and in AE it's not nearly as easily customizable. Same for Encore's, etc. I'd LOVE for a change in PP's hotkey to reflect how it works in AE, Encore, and even PS in video mode, etc.
Simarly, as mentioned on this forum, I hate how blending mode changes in PS is arrows keys, on AE is shift + or -, and totally manual (mouse--annoying) in PP. If there's one thing I wished was improved, it would be to make this particular task universal among Adobe apps.
I also really miss the hotkey property drop downs from AE when in any other program (c for opacity, a for anchor, etc). I'd love to see them make it into other apps.
Try not to hide things in the panel's window, coming from "hamburger menu's", I like that CS5 has kept things well enough organized to not have a bunch of important options there that are easy to miss.
Speaking of buttons, I think you'd find it rewarding to add 'fit to fill' and other fit clip options into buttons. They are extremely hidden right now, because you only see the options if you set 4 in/out points and don't drag/drop, which most users will never do. Additionally, "solo" & "mute" buttons for audio tracks, which are right there on the audio mixer, just makes sense, add them.
Another important one is you need to make everything keyboard mappable. Like in MC, all buttons and actions need to be mappable--just the drop down menus and the few extras you have listed doesn't cut it. I agree with others here, the keyboard visual layout would be dandy here.
Definitely a +1 to improving thumbnail views. Really quite bad right now. Need much more customization in sizes thatn just 3 sizes, and a thumbnail + info view (like script view in MC) makes it so you can both see and sort the info, and see the clip at the same time, which is ideal for me. Be able to customize the thumbnail, maybe a special type of marker that's put in from the preview window?
Hope this helps. For the most part the UI's are really great; it's the thing that most other NLE users are complaining about in their software, not Adobe users. Often in their forums I'll see posts comparing things to PPro's UI and pointing out how much better developed it is & that particular app should do something similar to what Adobe did. In my experience, anyway

BusinessObjects Enterprise Lifecycle Manager (LCM) Tool - Feedback?
Lifecycle Manager Feedback Requested
Do you use the Life-Cycle Management (LCM) tool introduced with BusinessObjects Enterprise XI 3.1?
We're seeking feedback!
Any new features or enhancements you'd like to see in the tool, please go here:
Log on, add your ideas, and vote on the ideas already there!
Sincerely,
Ted UedaHi
I am currently testing the BO LCM 3.1 and while it appears very easy to use especially for promotion, the Version Control Manager seems to be lacking in controls and a clear promotion path from dev to test to uat to prod.
We have set up 2 identical environments for UAT and PROD.
And using the Version Control part of LCM creating version control for a universe.
Logged into VM in UAT
We have selected a universe
Added it to VM
Made a change to the universe in Designer
Exported it
Then Checked it in
Can now see 2 versions in the history and the VMS Version. All good
I then click on swap system and log into PROD
The VM history is also there in PROD
I have a number of concerns and questions and can't seem to find the solution to them anywhere.
1. VM seems to be lacking a controlled process from all the environments. Basically we want to deploy following this path;
Dev - Test - UAT - PROD
There does not seem to be any controls or security which would stop you from GET VERSION from the DEV environment and putting that straight into PROD. Obviously we would not want that to happen.
We would only want to GET VERSION from UAT
Similarly for UAT We would only want to GET VERSION from TEST
And for TEST We would only want to GET VERSION from DEV.
Granted, we currently only have 2 identical environments.
But Is there controls that would stop you when in PROD from getting versions from any other system other than UAT?
Also is there any reason why no promotion is required when using VM.
This seems to negate the Promotion Function of the LCM
Any advise would be greatly appreciated with this.
Many thanks

Best Backup / Archive Solution?
I'm new to the forum discussions and was hoping someone could offer some advice as to the best and easiest back-up solution in my situation.
I work for a company that does not have a back-up solution for the 1 G5 mac connected to their windows SBS network. Yes, this is insane because this mac contains thousands and thousands of graphic files that go back 10+ years or so and probably occupies 80GB+ of space too.
The company has a graphic artist that uses this G5 daily creating more graphic files. I am looking for the best Automated back-up solution that doesn't require the user to manually start a back-up and have to wait for it to complete - especially since there is 80GB worth of files. I'm not really concerned with backing up applications or program files, but more concerned with archiving the graphic files. I've looked online at solutions such as rsync, disk image files, raid with 2nd hard drive, and back-up apps with external drives such as Carbon Copy or Super Duper but wanted to get some advice from experienced mac users that may have dealt with my same issue.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete FireWire drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
Cool Drives
OWC
WiebeTech
Firewire Direct
California Drives
NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver. -
YET ANOTHER MEDIA ENCODER WILL NOT OPEN AT ALL THREAD
Read the other threads concerning Media Encoder crashing on start up and no solution worked for me.
I have Creative Cloud. I have a brand new Macbook Pro - 10.9.1.
I have tried uninstalling all Creative Cloud applications and running the Adobe Cleaner. Reinstalled and Media Encoder still doesn't work. I have tried deleting preference files. Still no good. I have read and write access to the Adobe Folder.
I did read that initially Red Giant software was causing a problem. I had installed Red Giant Color Suite because I had a license for MOJO. I unistalled the Color Suite after I read there was a problem. I also have the Shooter Suite because I use Plural Eyes. I don't need MOJO really, but I have to have Plural Eyes. It is still installed.
I have read through the several threads on this same topic and I think tried everything.
Without Media Encoder, the rest is useless - if I can't deliver to clients! Brand new computer just got yesterday.
Any other ideas?
thanks,
JET

I did this on a system level. On a whim I changed the sharing & permissions for staff and everyone. At this point I am sure you can guess that it worked after. AME launched just fine and I was able to quickly import and export into AME stand alone, as well as have it launch from Premiere and export from there. Thanks to Dima Tikhonov for making me go back and take another look at that.
So… problem solved. I meant to immediately get on the forum to say what happened for the fix, but I was so excited to get everything working on my new computer I dove head first into sorting through five hours of footage I shot yesterday morning.
THANKS Adobe Forum!

Hi All,
I keep all my Music, TV Shows and Movies on an external drive. It's dying. It's a 500 GB drive, but all I have right now are two 250 GB drives. I don't want to lose my play-counts, playlists, ratings and such. (I did copy all my music over to one of the two drives as a safety precaution. My music is my primary concern - media I can always get via DVDs and such, but I consider my music irreplaceable. ) Also, I have an iPod classic, iPhone and iPad that all sync with that library. I'm so confused...
TIA,
JonSimple enough to do.
It's a 500 GB drive, but all I have right now are two 250 GB drives.
Need to know how much of each type of media you have in iTunes.
Under library on the left side of iTunes, click Music, Movies, TV shows, etc. and look at the bottom of iTunes window and see how much (size/GB) each one has.
Also, need to know how much free space is on each of the 250GB drives
This will show us what we need to transfer where.
_If everything in iTunes will fit on one of the 250GB drives…_
iTunes prefs -> Advanced, set the iTunes media folder location to one of the 250GB drives.
iTunes menu Files > LIbrary > Organize library > Consolidate.
This will copy everything to the new location and use that location for everything from now on.
All playlists, ratings, playcounts, etc. will remain as they are.
If everything in iTunes will not fit on one of these drives, don't do anything and post back with the sizes. -
[ Bug ? ] Mail archive - discussion thread not visible if archive 'too early'
Hello,
I feel like something is wrong concerning mail archive and thread/discussions. I explain :
- Septembre : I receive a mail and I archive it, via Gmail, in the XX category
- Octobre and Novembre : this mail become a thread, people answer, I answer etc... The discussion ends and I archived it, via Gmail, so that it's not in my Incoming box anymore. (so : it's the second time I archive it )
- Today : I want to read again what we talked about in this thread, so I go to my XX category via iOS Mail app.
> Here is the problem: I only see the the first mail of the thead, I have to 'unarchive' it and 're-archive it' so that all the mails in this discussion ( so the thread ) are totally visible when I go to my XX category via the Mail app. (of course, no problem with gmail interface)
Someone may confirm ?
Did I miss something ?
cyaNo one got that problem ?

Hi! I recently took over management of a Windows 2003 domain that had only one domain controller. I was building a second DC for redundancy and discovered that the SYSVOL share on the original DC is in "JRNL_WRAP_ERROR" after the SYSVOL and NETLOGON
