Seeking Guidance

Hi All,
I am looking for a little guidance, as I am extremely new to Java and programming in general. I have no real coding experience so at this point, much of the information I have read is still a little foreign and daunting. My experiences lie within the physical side of computers, understanding hardware components and the relationships between them. I am a PC enthusiast, love to build my own PC's and am really looking forward to learning a great deal from you guys and wherever you can point me for valuable reference material. A great deal of what I have read so far seems to assume that the reader has already developed a basic competency in programming language. Can anyone assist in helping me to break this barrier?
If there is a mentor type personality out there that would be interested in gaining a keen, enthusiastic apprentice, I am it.
Cant wait to hear from you all.

What you need to do is check out the online [Sun Java tutorials|http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/index.html] start from square one and progress on through them. It's the best way to start out. Good luck!

Seeking guidance from an MM expert in MRP for DBM / Service parts at Automotive Dealership.
    Thanks & Best Regards
    Babu

    Hi Babu,
This is a fairly complex issue as a whole.
How big is this dealership? Local, national, international?
If it is big, it doesn't make sense to work with manual ROP, as the users will have to manually maintain these data for thousands of materials, and also update from time to time, as consumption patterns change and new models are sold.
Also, in this industry there's the issue of original and non-original spare parts. To get a solution for that in MRP planning you need to install and use the special SAP industry solution for automotive.
So, if not manual ROP, you will have to deal with forecasting based on past consumption. Good statistical modeling to support the forecasting process requires an expertise in its own.
Unfortunate, this is too vast to be properly covered in the forum.
    Good luck,
    Mario

  • Seeking guidance on upgrading from single drive to RAID on XServe

    Hi,
I'd be grateful for any guidance anyone can give me on upgrading my XServe to a RAID.
My 2GHz G5 XServe runs 10.3 and has a single 80GB drive. It's been running for 3 years providing mail, web sites (around 100) and around 10 java applications for that time without any trouble. However, I'd like to get it running on a mirrored RAID array (RAID1).
Is it possible to backup the existing disk to a FW drive. Insert a new disk, format the old and new disk as a RAID1 setup, then restore the previous OS setup, user, mail, web sites, applications etc?
I've got this server running very sweetly, it's extremely reliable but I'm worried about the disk failing.
I've read other posts here that have described trying to do this but that the old backup may overwrite low level RAID1 formatting upon restore. Any thoughts on how I can avoid that?
    Kind Regards,
    Chris.

    Hi Chris
I’ve never done it that way because of the potential problems you describe. Perhaps some of the other guys have a way of making that method reliable. Seeing as you have an XServe why don’t you buy two drives instead of one? They are cheap enough nowadays. 2x250GB SATA drives should do.
I would target disk mode the server to a laptop for example and prep your RAID Mirror that way. Restore using DU or clone using CCCloner to the new RAID, restart and test. This way if you hit any problems you will still have a working server on your original drive. Plan on 40mins to an hour downtime.
    Hope this helps – Tony

  • Web Dynpro JAVA developer attempting to unravel Environmental Compliance source code seeks guidance from EC NWDS Composition Environment specialist

It frustrates me to have to ask for detailed instruction on this issue, but normal means of importing these Java-based EC software archives just aren't working in our NWDI system. We never moved our production WDJ applications to CE (like so many others we jumped straight from NW7.01 to NW7.3) but I'm doing my part to come up to speed on composition projects. No matter how we create the NWDI track and import the software archives and dependencies, we can't get to a state where we can successfully import a project (product?) from the Development Infrastructure into the Composite Explorer perspective.
I need to know specifically how I, an experienced WDJ developer with no exposure to CE, can take the five .SCA files that contain Environmental Compliance 3.0 and get the project into my NWDS 7.31 workspace in a workable state, on my local system, without NWDI. Actual code modifications can wait for the moment, I just need to analyze the classes and EJB's to identify where we might want to make enhancements, and where/how to use the provided Enhancement Spots. I've followed the links, downloaded the .pdf's, read the online help, stepped thru the tutorials - I've done my due dilligence. It's common knowledge that Composition Environment is no longer recommended for new development, and as the EH&S programs are converted to WDA there are even fewer resources to look to.
These specific types of pleas don't often return results, as I have learned over my years in this community, but nothing ventured-nothing gained, and I am no longer afraid of looking dumb or being scolded. I just need help.
As always, points will be awarded.

    I agree in part Tobias.
Because the source code is in the SCA within the src.zip file within each SDA.
What does not exist within that SCA Standard is the SOURCEARCHIVES folder. In that folder should be a file (the extension .dcsa) for each DC (component) that SCA Standard.
In short, yes it is possible to perform a reverse engineering...
Just import the SCA Standard in NWDS.
Note the name and type of all DCs, its dependencies and its public parts... yes, it's a lot of work, as there are many interdependent DCs.
Done so, create a new workspace in NWDS and create a new SCA in DI (custom), inside it create all DCs with the same names and types (and dependencies)... identical to SCA Standard.
And soon after, entering the SRC folder of each of these projects (DCs) and replace its contents with the contents of src.zip file that is contained within the SDA files within the SCA Standard.
That done, we will have an SCA Custom with all representative of the SCA Standard DCs, but editable.
I agree it is not nearly a good practice, or even that SAP indicate that this is done... however, it is possible yes.

  • Uninstalling iTunes has taken away my DVD/CD drive - seeking guidance

Hello. This is on a Vista SP1 laptop. Last week I uninstalled iTunes because I don't use it and I wanted to reclaim disk space. Since then my built-in DVD/CD drive has not been recognized by Windows. It does not appear in My Computer or iTunes. I have tried re/uninstalling iTunes 8 multiple times as well as the latest Gear drivers. I have tried the registry modifications regarding the "UpperFilters" key. You can see a snapshot of the current registry here:
    http://www.mikeseyes.com/computers
Is there anything else I can try? Reformatting my PC and installing a fresh copy of Windows seems unimaginable at the moment. Please help if you can.
    Thank you.

Anyone have any insight on this? I'm grateful for any assistance. Thank you.

  • New User Seeking Guidance

I have recently discovered a hidden obsession of photography.  I have purchased Photoshop Elements 8 and also Premium Elements 8 - the package deal.  I have also purchased the Canon LiDE 200 scanner for paper photos.  My goal is to gather ALL my family photos, touch them up, organize them and then share them with other family members.
I like the Organizer that is part of Elements 8 - it allows me to do minor corrections to photos, organize them and it can access the scanner.
    I have two questions:
    1) Will Lightroom benefit me in any way?  I don't want to get too far into organizing photos and realize there is a better program than the Elements Organizer later.....
    2) Would purchasing VueScan be worthwhile?  I will be scanning many, many photos - and from what I have heard is that VueScan is the best scanning software around.
Thanks for helping out a digital newbie!!

Lightroom has different capabilities and a somewhat different interface than PSE. Other than that, I can't answer your question unless you provide a lot more details about what features you think you will use. Lightroom can certainly "allow me to do minor corrections to photos, organize them ...". Of course, you can download the 30 day trial of Lightroom and try it for yourself.

  • Seeking Guidance: Vertical Links (block) w/ Pctures (Fluid Design)

    Hey all.
I'm relatively new to Web Design.  Though I've got a decent grasp on the concepts, it's a lot for a novice to take in.
I've got some great responses from the community here, and I'm sure I'll be here a lot.
    Using: Dreamweaver CC
I would like to explore options that will allow me to create vertical links in a fluid div.  Mockup below:
Note the right-side with "Estimates, Repairs, Archery, and Maintenance".  I'd like these to be clickable links.
    My questions:
So, those four links are in a container listed below.  Is that ok for a container for the four links?  Suggestions?  Should it be a class, or just an ID for the container "side_nav"?
    <nav class="fluid side_nav">
What method would I use to make each one of those four objects clickable link boxes that include both the pictures and the text?
    - I understand that I'd need to make the blocks 25% height, 100% width (minus allowances for padding)
    - I understand that I'd need to edit stylesheets to reflect :hover, :active, and the like.
    - - I've only ever created simple menus with a single word in them that was a link.  I'd like the whole block to be a link.  Bolded h2-style text, the subtext, and the icon.
    - How do I set up each link block?  <div> container for each link?  <ul>? (If <ul>, then how do I also incorporate the text variances, and the photo?)
I'm not looking for a copy-paste answer.  I'd like to know more about the -how- than the actual result.
    Thanks all!

Thanks for the tip.  Things are coming together, but with every step forward, there are two steps back.
Here's the solution (that seems to work so far:
    <nav class="fluid side_nav">
      <div>
        <a href="#">
          <img src="images/images.jpg" alt=""/>
          <h2>Estimates</h2>
          <p>Click here for an estimate
         </a>
       </div>
(Same <div> style, three more times, different values / links, etc.)
    </nav>
The new problem has to do with the fluid layout, so this is a very specific question.  As the browser screen is shrunk, the main image shrinks (See above wireframe). How do I make the .side_nav elements (the four side-links to the right of the large image) shrink at the same rate?
I can't set fixed px height values to the .side_nav a elements, as the picture would be smaller than the .side_nav on screens with smaller resolutions.
    My thoughts:
    - Use the fluid css elements to style the image at fixed px rates for the three settings:
@media only screen and (min-width: 769px) = Image height is (x) px, .side_nav height = same px as image
@media only screen and (min-width: 481px) = Image height is (x) px (smaller than above), .side_nav height = same px as image
    Any other solutions?

  • Datasource Extractor Enhancement - Requirement Guidance required

    Hi Friends,
I received a requirement for enhancing a existing report. When digged down till the extractor(standard) and found tthat these 7 fileds are missing in the extractor itself.
After discussion with the functional consultant; we identified the source table and fileds for the requirements.
But there are 4 fields whose text description has been maintained in another table and their technical values are being used in the table we are going to use. I.e., the mater data(Texts) has been maintained seperately.
When cheked in BI, those master data are not maintained; hence we need take it all the way from ECC.
    1. I would like to know, whether we need create a new extractor(datasource) for master data and take it in to BI; also enhance the existing the std extractor.
    OR
    2. Can we take the master data fields in the existing extractor and use it in BI? If so, how we can show filed as KEY+TEXT in the report?
    Scenario: Filed - ACTIVITY PARTNER
                     Display - KEY + TEXT
    Seeking guidance for understanding better.
    Thanks
    Regards
    Santhosh Kumar N

    Hi,
My requirement is to display the field as Key+Text in the report. Its a new field to be added. But in the Source system, the technical code and description has been maintained in the same table.
I need to extract this data in to BI and use it in reporting.
As you said, we can write a routine to display the two different fields  as 1 filed and displying both Key+Text in the report.
I have not done this before, Just want to confirm will it be feasible by a routine. Also, which routine should be used? do we have any sample codes of it?
Sincere Thanks for your valuable information.

  • How to use my iPhone 4 to select Internet radio stations on MacBook Pro

Okay, once again I return here to seek guidance and wisdom.  Fellow members here told me about Air Video, a terrific set of programs for iOS and OS X to stream videos from my MacBook Pro to my iPhone 4.  It is awesome!
Now, my other need (?).  I want to run something on my Mac that lets me select Internet radio station streams like TuneIn for ex., but I want to be able to change selections on whatever is on the Mac from the iPhone 4.  What I want to do is use the iPhone 4 as a remote for the app on the Mac which I want to connect to either some external speakers or someday to a real external Dac, amp, and speakers.
I have the TuneIn Pro app on my iPhone 4 already and on the Mac via browser have accessed their website.
Now someone surely is going to mention Airplay or something to stream from the iPhone4.  From the cost of Airplay capable hardware, I just can't afford it yet.  Maybe if I could find Bluetooth speaker or device?
One other thing to throw in for thought.  I have not only iTunes on my MacBook Pro, but also Fidelia and Amarra, and thinking about Decibel or Audirvana.  In other words somewhat hi-def music output quality available on the Mac.  So....I do have a remote app for Fidelia and think there's one for either Decibel or Audirvana, so that brings me back to Internet radio on the MacBook Pro.  If I can find a way to use the iPhone 4 to select an app on the Mac for Internet radio, I can play those plus hi-def music via one of those programs.
I probably didn't say all that right, but I hope you can decipher what I am asking about.
If nothing else, can you recommend inexpensive Bluetooth speakers to play radio from the iPhone4?  I was hoping to buy some AudioEngine powered speakers for the Mac, hence the desire to run all sound/music through that device but using the iPhone4 as control device.

    Hi Starbux48
First off. The benefits of using Amarra, Pure Music, Audirvana or whatever, can only be heard if you have a true audiophile system set-up. Think of systems starting from 5000 U$. Then only if your music files are high resolution. Think ALAC or FLAC, AIFF or Wave.  For all other music playing the itunes set-up suffices. So the better idea for you will be playing the music over your macbook.
Mountain lion offers airplay for intel based macs. You can use this. If you install the free Remote App. on your iPhone, you can use that to control itunes on your Macbook via wifi/Airplay. The remote app offers you the view of itunes on your Macbook and the screen of your Macbook changes with what you do on your iPhone. So you can even control the itunes radiostation from your iPhone.
If you have an older, non-intel macbook, you can install airserver on your macbook. This will set you back 15 dollars or so, but will basically do the same.

  • A 10 Steps Plan to Qualify Cisco Certifications

The networking industry over the last few years has made exceptional development so has increased the demand of networking professionals. Cisco Corporation is heading the networking industry by offering networking data management and all other highly specialized solutions for networking such as voice, video, and wireless. IT industry and economy are unpredictable and -it’s very important for an IT professional to keep himself updated with the new inventions in IT field. Networking professionals who want to secure their career and want to move up to the next higher level of their career often opt to go for Cisco Certifications. However most of the time they get confused which course they should take and what plan they should follow to competently complete their Cisco Certifications.
The issue is not that you complete your
Cisco certification but you should try to achieve quality Cisco Certification. High professionals often choose not to go for “paper Certification; paper certification is just like paper with prints on it but with little practical knowledge about the related subject. When as a networking personal you decide to go for any Cisco Certifications then always go for quality certification and it demands both your quality efforts and time that turns into more technical knowledge and polished skills. This what paper certifications lack!
    In order to help you to obtain a quality Cisco certification below are 10 steps that can help you to plan well your study and develop the right and in-depth knowledge of different networking aspects. Below are those 10 steps;
1 – You are your expert!
While working in your networking field you may come across many other professionals who believe in themselves as experts in networking.  These individuals are often seen as technology giants for new comer s in the networking field but this not true. The networking field has become so vast with everyday changing technology that it’s almost impracticable for someone to be an expert. What you can do yourself is to be an expert of yourself by mastering some of the networking technologies.
The rapid inventions in networking fields are making it irresistible for someone to ignore the developments in networking.  To be a competent networking professional it’s not necessary that you get hands on all the networking areas but you can choose a specific line and improve your skills in that particular area. Cisco systems offer a lot of courses in many areas of networking and you can choose any of your interest and go for its certification for example telephony, data security, or wireless. Once you are sure which certification you have to go for then put all your efforts into it. Don’t try to know each and every single thing related to technology the more delay you make in Cisco Certification the more delay is in your professional career development.
2 – Focus on your area of interest!
Cisco system proposes a variety of certifications in different areas of networking. The two most demanded and worldwide respected Cisco certifications are CCNA and CCNP. These two courses focus on the most dominant areas of the networking that is routing and switching. CCNA-Security and CCSP modules focus on the network security issues such as firewalls, intrusion detection and avoidance and more. While CCNA-Voice and CCVP tracks deal in the telephony technologies.  Cisco offers many other modules of your interest that worth for your success in networking.  However you main focus should be a single areas of your interest!
3- Make sensible investment in your future!
When you decide to go for any Cisco certification you have to invest a lot of your time, energy and money. Before going for the final exams you have to fully prepare yourself in all facets that help you in the victorious completion of your exam. Always try to make wise investment in proper study material; your investment in low profile study material would lead to less knowledge and low scores.
While starting preparations for Cisco exams never study any material that you find; spend some time to find the appropriate material. To assist you in preparation Cisco has introduced some books, videos and tutorials; these helping books are best for your study as they are designed exclusively for their certifications by keeping in mind the Cisco certifications formats. Your research to find any such material leads increases the chances that you get the perfect idea of what would be the format of your Cisco exams.  You can also seek guidance from your relatives, friends and other industry professionals who have successfully completed their Cisco exams. You can make good use of different discussion boards on different Cisco and other It related forums.  A good thing is to read authenticated book reviews some reputed sites such as eBay and don’t forget to make regular visit of many Cisco websites and blogs created by Cisco certifiers. These websites and blogs offer you good suggestions on which material is best for your CCNA or CCNP exams.
4 – Follow an Organized Study Plan
You should not settle down on the perfect discovery of your study material rather you should create a study plan and then strictly follow it. Establish an organized study schedule and stick to that pattern. Stay away from activities that cause diversion like TV, music or buzzing mobile.  Plan your study schedules close to your meal times to avoid any distraction due to hunger. Try to drink water and eat some cookies when you feel hungry during study.
It’s not important how long you study but what quality study you make; try to study even for a single hour in a peaceful environment rather then studying for several hours in a noisy room. So try to create your study plan according to the best hours of the day that has the minimum or no noise and disruption. Try to study daily for at least two best hours of the day and try to practice that routine.
5 – Think of your Future, not about Exams
Once you make your mind which Cisco certification you have to take then you have to flow a steady study plan before getting yourself registered for the final exam. Study till you are fully assured that you can handle the tough and technical questions of your certification and get it passed. Remember ven if you are lucky enough to pass the exams don’t throw out your priceless material; it can helpful for you in other Cisco certifications. This why investment in Cisco certification is said to be a long term future investment that brings you many future benefits. So always try to keep this helping material for a long time period to get support in next higher level Cisco exams. Try to get as much knowledge as much you can absorb and remember also reserve some time to revive it.
It’s not simple to just study your paper notes and pass the exams; the successful completion of Cisco certification demands that you are flu familiar with the exam content.  Cisco certification deals in multiple areas of networking and it require your full commitment and dedication as a part of your exam preparation. As said above you have to think about your future not about your exams. This will help you to focus on your study and chive the target of Cisco certification.
6 - Avoid the Short cut
This is the most valuable advice that you have to learn by heart when going for a technical certification. An easy road to your certification such as cliff handouts, brain dump exams, boot camps, or other means of short cut won’t provide you the required benefits in terms of knowledge and skills. Some of these useless s exams are strictly prohibited by Cisco and can also disqualify you for any Cisco certification. You can memorize that material but it won’t give you the demanded understanding of the technology that you have to apply in your practical networking career.  Such understanding comes only from the real time and efforts that you put in the preparation of your Cisco exams.
The above warning particularly applies to networking professionals who want to obtain their higher level Cisco certifications within short time and little study. Most of the networking professionals already have enough knowledge of practical word networking that makes them ideal candidates for passing Cisco certification with the help of just refreshing study material. Boot camps play a significant role for these professionals by training them for any Cisco certification in short time.  But joining of these boot camps is not recommended to new comers with little or no experience in networking field. Boot camps are best for people already having enough networking experience.
7- Focus on one Exam at a Time!
May individuals in networking field often find it enticing to go for more than one Cisco certification at a time and number of such individuals is considerable? There are many reasons behind this; more often you get bored with one topic and try to find some other path of your interest.  As Cisco certification puts a lot of load on your nerves itself and that pressure does not allow you to spend adequate time on each exam. Regardless of your motto to take multiple Cisco certifications at a time it’s generally not a good thought. It effects your ability to properly focus on one any area and preparing yourself even for a single exam. So it’s always a wise choice to get you Cisco certification step by step!
8 – Try to Balance out Life and Study!
Passing any Cisco certification requires a lot of your time, energy and efforts and if you put too much of all these factors in your exam preparation you may exhaust very soon. As a matter of fact you have to dedicate most of your time for your study but always remember to dedicate some time to your life as well. There are many other things in your life that demand your attentions. Try to stay away from books for a couple of hours daily. It’s important because it will keep you not to get bored with the dry preparation of your exams preparations and to effectively absorb the information related to your exams.
    9 – Make a Study Guide Yourself!
Once make a thorough study of your material then the best thing you could do is to create a study guide for yourself. A study guide will contain all the basic and important terms, details, descriptions and explanations related toy your exams. The information is often the most technical and difficult contents of your study that you find really hard to memorize. This guide can help you in getting good scores because it’s easy for you to refresh your knowledge in really short time. Create a simple but comprehensive study guide!
The best use of study guide is made on the day of your Cisco exams. Be at your exam centre at least one hour before and make some good reviews of your study guide. This will help you in refreshing your knowledge about the most difficult terms and retain them for a plenty of time. This study guide help you answer some most technical question in your exams as Cisco software offers you some additional questions on your weak areas of networking. so once you make a good review of study guide them go into your exam room. However don’t spend too much time on the compilation and review of your study guide as it won’t help much in getting good grades. A study guide created at for one Cisco certification also helps in the preparation of other advanced level certification and you would find it really valuable.
10 – Be Confident While Testing
Don’t panic and try to calm down when you enter in your exam room; it’s very important that you keep yourself confident while you start answering your exam questions. Have confidence in your study and try to recall the information from your study guide you review before your exam. If you have make good preparation for your test then there is no point that you get confused. Also observe the time allowed for the completion of our test and don’t spend too much time on a single question or on one section. Try to limit your guesses about possible answers and then make a sophisticated answer.
If there are no negative markings for any wrong answer, never leave it blank. Don’t try to answer all questions but try to make educated answers to get high score!
Try to keep in mind the maximum number of questions you don’t know the answers and if you fail to pass the test then immediately make a list of those questions with your answers.  Use this list to match against your study guide to see what went wrong. These questions may likely to appear in exams if you retake them and this time you would have the current answers.
The above steps through seem common but they can definitely increase the probability of passing your CCDA Certification Training. Always try to fallow all or most of these steps and you will pass your exam with higher possible score. This plan will also help you in practical networking career because you have a prepared collection of all the information related to your networking field. It’s not just a dream to pass your Cisco certification the only thing it requires is your commitment and dedication. If you are a technology lover you would be more than willing to invest your time energy and money in the predation of your exams n order to become a successful Cisco certified expert.

Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine in domain 'Y' | UPK 11.0 on the new machine first, install the 11.0.0.1 patch, and then upgrade to 11.1.
We are using the same database as the old machine. Developer Server is Standard Authentication, Knowledge Center is Windows authentication.
    ==========================================================================================
So far we have installed 11.1 with the respective database upgrades, but are lost as to how to migrate the old Content Root data. We have copied all the content to the new Content Root, added it to IIS like the old machine, and verified that the UPK database Content Root path is correct and working.
For the rest of the post, I am remoted into the server from my local workstation, and then using IE to access KCenter on the server's FQDN, not via localhost.
Since I am green, so I presumed that I would need to import the titles under Manager in KCenter. I zipped each content folder individually (they are named "1", "9", etc), and then attempted to import each zip file.
NOTE: At this stage sometimes we are prompted to authenticate again. When it does, sometimes the credentials that we know work, get rejected and we are prompted again. This will repeat until we get a 401 and we have to start over. We have verified that the Windows account currently in session with the site is valid and has administrator authority within KC.
NOTE2: On the first few tries, .NET complained that maxRequestLength was not large enough. I had our servers team increase it on the actual server in order for us to proceed.
Provided we don't have to authenticate again, or that it actually accepts our credentials, we get to the 30% mark and then receive the error: *"Package load Failed! Invalid package Title, manifest file cannot be found"*
Does anyone have any wisdom for this process? The title importation section in the deployment manual is not helping, and the administrator from whom I am taking over this software has not had to deal with this before.
    Thank you,
    Ian

Hi Marc, thanks for the post,
I have gone through an extensive troubleshooting process with Oracle, including their development team, in order to fully complete our project setup. As a supplemental bit of information, we also were having connection errors when attempting to publish directly to the knowledge center.
As far as the context of this post, here is the solution in brief:
    1) Verify that the package being imported was published from the same version of the Developer Client as the Knowledge Center installation's.
    2) Check for database consistency issues. In our case we were using a database that was built in another domain. After numerous attempts with Oracle support on the line to determine the inconsistency, it was decided to completely reinstall and build a new database from scratch in the new domain.
    3) Check application pool identities and access (while we had some inconsistencies here, correcting them did not change the behavior of the import/publish errors)
In review, a lot of what we had setup was correct. Our primary point of failure, we feel, was using the old database. Technically this should not have been a problem, but Murphy likes to get his way sometimes.
    Cheers,
    Ian

  • Want to make an isolated subnet

I am wanting to set up an isolated subnet subordinate to my main subnet, but am seeking guidance before I go out and spend a bunch of money on stuff then find out that it won't work.
I want to place some (outdoor, in weather-proof enclosures) wireless network webcam servers onto my existing subnet. The wireless network webcam servers are TrendNet TV-IP301W (link opens in new browser window).
My existing network consists of a combo DSL modem with router and wireless. I rent the modem/router/WAP from my ISP. It does WPA2-AES, and all wireless computers connect to it using WPA2-AES.
The TrendNet webcam servers do NOT support WPA2-AES. The manufacturer has advised me that they have no plans of upgrading the firmware in that device to do so. At $300+ each, they are not something that I want to just throw away or take a big loss on eBay trying to sell.
So, I would like to hang an "isolated" WPA1-TKIP subnet (192.168.1.x) off of my existing (192.168.0.x) DSL modem subnet. My initial cut at a network topology design can be seen here (link opens in new browser window).
One of my main goals for this topology is to continue using the existing routing capabilities of the DSL modem (it can port forward to computers by hostname not IP address and those computers can have DHCP-assigned IP addresses). And, of course, the principal goal is to provide an isolated WPA1-TKIP wireless subnet for the TrendNets, from which rogue users, if they were able to surreptitiously affiliate to that subnet, could neither access any of the Macs affiliated to the 192.168.0.x home subnet nor leech free internet service at my expense.
I am looking at using two LinkSys WAP-54G routers, one in "client" mode so that its WAN side gets a DHCP-issued IPA from my DSL modem/router. The plan would be to strap it back-to-back with another WAP-54G, which would serve as the router for the TrendNets. Problem is, the first WAP54G apparently only works with another WAP54G, not with my ISP's combo modem/router/WAP.
However, it is my understanding that one of the versions of dd-wrt firmware may allow allow the first WAP-54G, when configured in client mode, to connect to a non-Linksys router. At least, this website suggests that this is the case.
The TrendNets are servers, so the only traffic that I want originating from any wirelessly affiliated device on the WPA1-TKIP subnet are "answers" to incoming webserver requests to the TrendNets. Those incoming requests would either be from computers on the 192.168.0.x subnet or from external internet traffic tunneled via ssh to one of the computers ("quicksilver") on the 192.168.0.x subnet. It would be desired to prevent rogue users affiliated to the 192.168.1.x subnet from initiating any connections going external to that 192.168.1.x.
    So (finally!) my questions:
    (1) has anybody ever flashed a WAP54G with this dd-wrt firmware and connected in client mode, using WPA2-AES, to a non-Linksys product?
    (2) there seem to be several versions of the dd-wrt firmware loads out there, and it is not clear to me whatsoever how to select the correct one -- which one should I use?
    (3) any problems seen with my proposed network topology?
    (3) any hints or suggestions on how to quarantine any rogue traffic (i.e., traffic that is not TrendNet port 80 traffic) as described in the previous paragraph?
Thanks for any help that anyone can provide.

    Hi j.v.
Have you tried the Linksys forums? I think you may get more help from a network type forum that uses the WAP54G than the Apple forums.
    regards

  • My hard drive is slower than ever - Late 2009 iMac - help requested

I was testing my hard disk via BlackMagic Disk Speed Test across the network (for copying files from my MacBook Pro to my Late 2009 iMac, and I was shocked at the write speeds.
Because of this, I went to the machine and ran local tests, both BlackMagic and xbench. Suddenly I was horrified when I saw the performance for write operations well below the speeds I'd observed in the past. Luckily, I had saved xbench files so I had the ability to compare old disk tests. In the summer of 2013 running 10.7.3, this same hard drive had an uncached write speed of 116 MB/s [4K blocks] and 94 MB/s [256K block]. Now, the drive running under 10.9.5 is performing very inconsistently, with top speeds around 80 MB/s and averages more like 50 MB/s.
I cannot think of any significant changes to tools or background applications installed since that time, so I ran EtreCheck -- the results of which I'm pasting below.
Any guidance as to what I should test would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading! --
    Chris
    Problem description:
Hard disk slowed to less than half the speed from Mac OS X 10.7.3, as I am now on 10.9.5 and the speed appears to be roughly 40M/s uncached write down from 119M/s previously. I am using the same drive, memory and most of the same applications.
The only large difference is the OS.

    Hi Eric -
I did a horrible job of explaining *when* the slow performance became noticeable. These changes did not happen when I installed Mavericks, I just don't have benchmarks *saved* to give the support community exact numbers after Mavericks was installed. The performance at that time was roughly the same, although you might recall that the old app xbench no longer worked to give a comparison because one or more of the sections of testing wouldn't work (memory, if I recall correctly, although I will run it when I am back at that machine and post here).
In any case, the only significant change since the slow down is the OS, but the decline in performance was noticed in the fall. It wasn't until I tried this network copying task the other day that I decided to run BlackMagic's test. This is when I realized I should go check the performance on the local machine. Having already run through many of the generic recommendations, I thought perhaps someone here who has a much deeper understanding of the storage abstraction layer would have guidance on specific preference files that might be corrupted since I can't find any tool to check them. I've noticed that many of the people seeking guidance are not very technical and the advice is similarly geared. I'm sure I could spend a little time this week finding comparable tools in Mac OS X to those I'd have used in the past on Windows (Sysinternals) to do real time debugging and process analysis.
So far I have found that there were a few processes running high, like the dashboard client, so I moved (deleted) the preference file and rebooted. This resulted in the gain to that 60 MB/sec write performance (up from the low of 40 MB/sec), but there must be other areas yet unexplored.
At this point I'm considering a fresh install, but I'd been told in previous exchanges when I first started developing on Macs (2008) that fresh installs were rarely the best solution on Macs.
Can you give me guidance on that? You probably know that in the Windows world it is often (depending on how you define often) necessary to format and reinstall the OS. As a long time systems architect developing everything from device drivers to enterprise solutions, I see that as a result of the attempts to maintain legacy support for so long and the convoluted resulting APIs and failure to make real fixes for fear of causing problems with older hardware and software. Would you suggest erasing and reinstalling?
@BobHarris - I know that's a problem and it's why I monitor the drive more than I do drives in other systems. My drive didn't qualify for replacement, but I think Apple doesn't always do a good job with the recalls. I was very fortunate that my old white MacBook qualified for quite a few replacement parts so it's a great browsing-the-web computer now, but at its age, it isn't capable of running most of the apps I need. I have considered selling the 27" iMac but when I last had it in for warranty repair, the DisplayPort was misaligned to the case, so I'm going to have to pay labor just to get it popped open to fix that (since the service center says they didn't cause the DP problem - although they must have!)... In any case, if I have to spend that money, I might as well use the drive doubler kit since I never use the optical drive in that box anyway. Mostly I love having it because of the gorgeous big screen. That being said, costs of repairs are silly when I can just buy another used MBP circa 2012 and get twice the processing power then use a CalDigit dock like the one I use with my existing MBP to use an inexpensive HD TV for the monitor.
Thanks for the replies folks - the input is awesome!
