  • What's your strategy for learning Java technologies?

    Or, in other words, how do YOU acquire knowledge that is necessary for implementing Java technologies?
    After having spent one-and-a-half years developing an enterprise app, I've gained lots of knowledge about Java and some surface knowledge about its related technologies (JBoss, Hibernate, Ant, XDoclet, NetBeans and probably some others I can't think of at the moment).
    I'm now realizing that -- although the standalone prototype version of my program is growing mature -- I've still got lots to learn for refactoring it to a web platform. For example, I 've done small test projects using Servlets, but haven't done any work with JSP (or HTML for that matter) yet.
    Now, I'm sure I can learn JSP etc., but the questions I ask myself are: how long will it take?
    It's a rhetorical question of course (I don't expect an answer from you, the reader) However, it's an important issue because the months or years I spend fumbling around learning these new technologies, are time I could otherwise spend on the business logic and functionality of my program.
    So, how do you guys acquire knowledge of technologies? Official training perhaps? Or do you simply experiment until it works? Or do you rely on your company's knowledge base (e.g. someone in your company knows how it works)? Or do you get prototypes built from someone who already knows how it works?
    Im really curious about this and would appreciate your thoughts.
    Thanks in advance,
    P

    Well, it seems like most of you simply read the
    various texts and try the vendors' examples. I'm
    surprised that no one mentioned ever having bought a
    prototype application from the onset. "bought"? What's that mean? You don't buy prototypes. You download evaluation versions, maybe.
    I try to find sample code and tweak it to see the effects. Otherwise, I start writing small sample code an build on that.
    I consider myself a reasonably competent core Java
    programmer, but I had serious difficulty configuring
    and merging its related technologies. There were so
    many disjointed pieces of instructional information
    that the additional research time really hurt our
    budget severely. Not an uncommon thing, I'm sure. There's a lot of stuff. But don't bother learning all of it. Not in detail, at least. It's a good idea to familiarize yourself with the names of packages/libraries and what they do. But only really learn what you need to learn for what you need to do. The next project you will probably need other things, so you learn them then.
    bsampieri,
    I've setup Tomcat and tried the examples--in fact, I
    normally follow tutorials for all products I hope to
    use. Problem is, the examples and tutorials never
    address my specific needs. So, I usually inch toward
    my goal by spending weeks or months in forums to
    continue where the tutorials leave off. Anything complex is going to not be there.... the trick is to identify pieces that you can pull out to build more complex apps. And the fact that JSP/servlets have the issue of being compounded by all the HTML/CSS/JS and HTTP protocol ... I don't want to say limitiations, exactly... Well, it just makes things more complex and harder to know what you need.
    Perhaps you guys are much faster and smarter than
    I...or you have a much bigger budget :)Probably not... on either account.

  • Seeking alternative advice for possible HD failure...

    My poor PB is just 4 months old and I'm not sure how, but I think the HD decided to quite (it clicks/whirs/clacks in ways similar to my previous notebook computer shortly before it quit).
    I cannot access anything on the HD itself, but can get to disk utility by way of the installation CD. When I try to run the utility I am not allowed to verify disk permissions or verify disk. When I try to verify, it says failure, could not unmount disk.
    If I try to repair disk permissions or repair disk, the computer starts the process, but just clicks and whirs FOREVER. It never actually does anything...
    the S.M.A.R.T. status shows verified, which should indicate the HD is ok (I assume).
    I need my computer immediately... what would be some advice for taking care of my problem? My current location is TOO FAR from an Apple Store to take it for repairs. Anything I can do on my own to solve this?
    I haven't tried it yet, (a bit afraid to) but I have considered erasing the disk. The file losses would be minimal, but if there is another route for solving this issue, I would rather go that way.
    Thank you for any and all advice you have!!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, BeckyJ.
    I think your PowerBook's hard drive is failing and there isn't really much you can do except replace the drive. Normally Apple will replace the drive under warranty - either sent in or at an Apple Authorised Service Provider.
    However as you need the computer immediately and don't wish to go via the warranty replacement route, then the only option available is to source a new drive (at your own expense) and replace the drive yourself. Installation instructions are available here. I do need to warn you that the process is not easy for anyone unfamiliar with working on the insides of a notebook computer and will invalidate the warranty.

    Microsoft told me with Microsoft Update Advisor that I could upgraded from Windows 7 Pro 64 bits to Windows 8 Pro 64 bits and after one year with another Microsoft Upgrade Advisor from Windows 8 Pro 64 bits to Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bits. But Gigabyte does not give the drivers on their website for this motherboard that support Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
    I think I should purchase a new motherboard, a new CPU and new RAM. Do you agree? If yes, so can you tell me what king of CPU and motherboard to choose for Creative Cloud, please? I had followed Adobe advices to use a Nvidia Quadro 2000 graphic card and HDDs in RAID 0 for editing video.
    Moreover Microsoft recommend to use a SSD for Windows 8.1. So, do I really need a SSD, with which capacity and which brand?
    Thank you if someone can help me.

  • Advice for a new Project

    Hello, friends.
    After a good period of trial, errors, and a good (but incomplete learning), my enterprise finally decided to start to create our courses by ourselves, and we will use the Captivate (thanks to the helping hands of Rick, Michael, Kerry and Lilybiri, and all the others that help, advice, and inspire me).
    I work in a tech school. We teach the basics of OS, Officce tools, web design and graphic design.
    We will use the Captivate to create the lessons, and the process of learning will follow this path:
    Interactive lesson --> Practical training --> Quizz;
    We will not use LMS, all our project is to be used in the school. The student came to us, sit on a PC, and view his lessons;
    What we want to achieve with Captivate (the reason of this post):
    1 - A start menu (made in Captivate or Flash) that search the student info in an external database, and present to him exactly what he is learning;
    Example: Student Joe put his floppy disk, and the menu show him that he is viewing Adobe Flash, lesson 8; student Bob put his floppy disk, and the menu show him that he is learning Windows Vista, lesson 2; student Joe don´t have the option to open lesson 9, or 10, without see first lesson 8; the same goes for all the lessons, to all students;
    Question: this can be achieved? Our previous modules used Toolbook, and it works this way; I want to know if there is a way to do the same thing here with Captivate, or work around this with Flash, or other tools;
    2 - The security of our lessons: We don´t want that the student copy our files, and see this in their home. We want that is only open locally, in the PCs of the labs;
    3 - In my month of trials, I try using the .exe publish output, that I think is the best way for me. I want all the lessons to be Fullscreen, to add more the sense of interaction of the student; I´m having some problems with my .exes: a) sometimes the files close in the end, sometimes not. I already change the preferences to the project close when it ends, but this don´t free me of this issue; b) no matter what I do, if I click "Esc', the lesson is finished. There is no way to cancel this?
    Well, that are my first 'official' questions about the Captivate, that´s becoming now my professional tool;
    Of course, when i start to go more deep in my projects, more questions will arise;
    So, I´m here counting with the friendship of the community to point me the directions to resolve my issues (or to point me what I will not be capable to do in Captivate);
    Thanks in advance
    Yuri Peixoto
    ex-software instructor, now interactive course creator in training

    Another problem with my project.
    I developed a 'widget' that I use to input text captions about the slide, and some "buttons" that do the following:
    previous slide;
    next slide;
    exit;
    To be serious, I don´t really create the buttons, they are static (lack of Flash knowledge). I do this work putting clickboxes over each one, with the respective options, and it´s working for me (until now).
    In this widget, I´m using some dinamic texts (xxx/xxx) that are loading the rdinfoCurrentSlide and the rdinfoSlideCount variables, to show this informatios to the students. This is working very well, except for a little detail:
    When the student advances in the slides, for a little amount of time, the "XXX" of the Flash dinamic texts appears, before it loads the information...
    It´s a minor issue, but it´s annoying my chief.
    There is a way to resolve this?
    P.S.: I do this based in the progress indicator developed by Michael of captivate4.com;
    P.P.S.: attached follow the .fla to analisys.
    P.P.P.S.: if someone know how to make the buttons of my widget function, and have the patience to teach the the basis about this, I will be very grateful;

  • Upcoming Card Advice for a new Fico member?

    Hello guys! I've been lurking the forums for quite a while, gathering useful information and I finally decided to make an account to ask you guys for your opinions.  I recently turned 18 the beginning of last month and I got to applying for credit cards quickly. My FICO credit score was 729 (was an authorized user under mom's CC for 11 years) after being approved for 1) Cap1 Journey ($3k, will PC to QS) 2) Discover It ($500, sooo low) 3) Amex TrueEarnings ($5.5k) Now, I am deciding which cards I should app for. I LOVE cash back. Most of my expenses are from restaurants and Amazon.Which cards should I app for next? I have these in mind:1) Citi DoubleCash2) US Bank Cash+3) Chase AARP4) Chase Freedom In the future: Marukai JCB, Sallie Mae MC I know I need to garden. But I am wondering for how long until I apply for the Citi DB? I'm covered with Discover because of their double cash back bonus for my first year, so when do you guys think I should app my next cards? Thanks guys!

    GOOD NEWS!!!!!
    This afternoon I got a very surprising call on my cell phone. Apparently one of the moderators on this board read my post and saw my situation. From my Apple ID, he got my information and called me to find out more about my issues in particular this new issue with my optical drive. After a few moments he said that Apple is willing to replace my computer because it is no longer worth fixing.
    I went to my local Apple Store and from there ordered my new replacement computer which should be here in a week!
    I would like to thank everyone for their tips and advice on my situation. Most of all I would like to thank Apple and the Senior Advisor (Brett) who helped make this possible. This experience, while frustrating has confirmed my belief that Apple is the best computer company on the planet who truly does value their customers! Based on this experience I will continue to refer every friend and family member to switch to Mac! I am ecstatic!
    Thanks once again Brett for helping me take care of this issue!

  • Behaviour for learning new words

    Hello all,
    I have a Xperia Z3 and a HTC One Mini and on both devices I have activated the new word learning feature and the swipe typing function, because I generally like that. However, the HTC One Mini does the word learning in a far better way and I was wondering if the Sony could be set to behave the same way.
    Here is the difference...
    - The Sony learns each and every word that it doesn't know as I type without any exception.
    - The HTC learns words it doesn't know only if I click the new word twice after writing it.
    I like the HTC behaviour much more, because it gives me control about the words that end up in my list of own new words.
    The Sony device just bloats my list of own new words and I have to clean that up periodically in order to get meaningful suggestions when I type. Words that I maybe just used once, numerals that are actually not words, words that are long conjunctions of multiple basic words, and of course also words that I just misspelled keep ending up in my word list. As a result completely meaningless and sometimes unexpected suggestions come up, e.g. like a long word as "insubordination" although I just wanted to type "in".
    Does anyone know if the Sony device can be set to behave as the HTC?

  • OA Framework newbee - Need suggestions/advice for a new project

    Dear All,
    We are starting up a new "Online Forms" project which aims to move all the offline paper based forms to online forms with online approvals etc.
    We are still new to OA, hence looking for tips from the gurus out here.
    We have various forms (upto 50 forms) e.g. Request for an Employment Letter, Request for Car Loan, Request for a salary bank transfer , in which the employee fills out certain fields specific to that request and submits the request. The request then goes for approval.
    I have gone through the OA dev guide which states that the structure should be :
    schema/server - EO
    server - VO, AM
    webui - Controller
    lov/schema/server - LOV related EO
    lov/webui - LOV related controller
    1 Should we further segregate everything based on the form ?
    E.g. For car loan request the EO s will go to : schema/server/carloan
    and For salary bank transfer : schema/server/bnktransfer
    and The common EO s would go to : schema/server/common
    2 If we have some helper classes, where would these go ? under util/schema ?
    3 How many application modules should be created for such an implementation. Should we have one AM per form ? (With LOVs having their dedicated AM?)
    Will appreciate if someone can guide us on the above questions. It would be helpful to set up the right base !
    Thanks,
    Gagan

    Thanks James and Peddi !
    Peddi, thank you for the detailed stucture. Did you mean that we must put in all the pages and their CO s in the same package ? There are going to be so many forms, with each form having atmost 5 pages - is there any harm creating one package per form ? (Ofcourse beneath the standard structure. E.g. CO's would be in webui, then would be further classified based on the form, so webui/carloan, webui/empletter and then there would be webui/common - for all the common stuff)
    We are also thinking in terms of one AM per form. The forms are simple -
    Page 1 - are you submitting for yourself or another employee
    Page 2- The form itself - The forms may display some employee information etc from APPS. (Grade, salary, exisitng loans etc)
    Page 3 - Review or confirmation page with a submit button.
    Thanks !

  • Advice for a new hard drive

    My PowerBook has an 80 GB hard drive and I only have 14 GB free. Time for more space! So, two questions:
    What's a great hard drive in the 160 to 250 GB range?
    Should a guy with PC tech experience but very little Mac tech experience attempt this operation on his own?
    Jeremy

    You have several choices. You could get an external hard drive and backup some of the data if you want more space. If you do this, recommend either a firewire device or a powered USB device, as our Powerbooks don't put out enough juice on the USB ports to run many external hard drives. One portable external firewire hard drive, for example, is http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/on-the-go . If you do upgrade your internal drive, you can get one of these cases and put your existing hard drive in it for selective backup (not the best approach, as you should have a complete backup of your data).
    Regarding hard drives in the 160GB to 250GB range, there are several vendors that make drives: Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi, and Samsung come to mind, there may be others. Seagate, Western Digital, and Hitachi are all brands that people seem to like. If you want to go larger, Western Digital has a 320GB drive, too. You can look at user comments at http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010150380%201035907 889%201035507777&name=5400%20RPM . Seagate used to have a 5 year warranty but recently seems to have recently changed their laptop drives to 3 years, which is more standard.
    To see if you want to do the installation yourself, look at this guide: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Browse/PowerBook#SectionPowerBook_G4_Aluminum_Num12 Choose your system and hard drive replacement. Suggest buying a new small phillips head, and use cups to keep the screws together by each step of the instructions.

  • Need advice for a new monitor for Mac Centris 610

    I have a Mac Centris 610. The Apple monitor(display unit) that originally came with it finally died. Would this old Mac be able to use a new flat-screen computer monitor? How can I find out what newer monitors wouldbe compatible with this old "war horse" computer. I use it for one application only, but it still works great for this. Many thanks to anyone who can rescue me from my predicament!

    You can't use a new flat-screen display, because they have a widescreen aspect ratio (16:9) and that isn't supported by the Centris' onboard graphics.  The Centris doesn't have PCI slots, so that eliminates that option.  You could check thrift stores or computer recyclers in your area for an older display.  You might have success using a Mac-to-VGA adapter having a set of adjustable DIP switches.  It plugs into the Mac DB-15 display port on the back of the Centris and enables you to connect an older, multi-sync CRT display (4:3 aspect ratio) having a PC-style VGA connector.
    From the specs posted at EveryMac.com for the Centris 610:
    "By default, the Macintosh Centris 610 only supports a single display, but a second one can be supported with the addition of a compatible PDS or NuBus video card. With the standard VRAM, the system is capable of supporting 512x384 at 16-bit color and 640x480, 800x600 and 832x624 at 8-bit color. With 1 MB of VRAM installed, it can support 640x480, 800x600 and 832x624 at 16-bit color and 832x624, 1024x768 and 1152x870 at 8-bit color."

  • Seeking Expert Advice for Voiceover Recording

    I am a beginner and have recorded some VOs. I have the basics down (find a room with few parallel surfaces, porous ones like foam are better still, quiet room etc) I think but I was wondering if anyone had any links to more best practices that can make me look an expert. Thanks in advance.

    What matters most is SOUNDING like an expert.  Obtaining dynamic, strong, clear recordings depends on a lot of factors.  Obviously, the environment is important:  for voiceovers you'll want an acoustically dead room with no echoes, nor ambient background or external noises.  (Things to look for include air conditioners, busy hallways next to or above the recording room, etc.)
    You'll want a quality microphone geared for recording voice, probably a good pre-amp, and a quality audio device, quality cables that don't receive interference from power cords, cell phones, etc.  You may or may not have a separate mixer, but that will certainly be helpful in allowing your voice talent to hear themselves speak through headphone monitors.  You'll often want to run a separate bus to their headphones with a small amount of reverb added to help them distinguish what they're hearing through the headphones from their own voice.  You'll also want a pop shield between the speaker and the microphone, and an adjustable microphone stand.
    Your talent will probably want to stand, maintaining good posture and an open diaphragm while they speak, and will need to keep a constant distance from the microphone.  Give them water or tea, but avoid sticky liquids like fruit juice or soda.
    Unless you have a mixer that support monitoring, you won't be able to monitor via software when recording with Soundbooth.  If you find yourself wanting to setup a more robust recording environment, I would recommend taking a look at Adobe Audition 3.0.  There's a 30-day trial, and you should be able to configure complex setups with live monitoring, real-time effects, and more advanced compression and clean-up tools.
    Good luck!

  • Need advice for a new graphics card

    Hey this is my first time posting here. I've got a Power Mac G4 MDD 1.25GHz with the original ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. I just recently tried installing Final Cut Suite 2 and found out my card isn't good enough. I've tried doing some research into what I need to buy, but have been rather confused. Any recommendations? I need to run the newest Final Cut. Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Retail card options are limited to two ATI Radeon cards. The current 9800 has the most capable graphics processor unit (GPU) but only 128MB VRAM. The 9600 is a little cheaper and has 256MB VRAM to make up for a slower GPU. Still, both cards are more capable than the 9000.
    I find the Mac specs on the ATI site confusing and sometimes outdated since being absorbed by AMD. Frankly, one of their resellers, Other World Computing, does a better job of showing current ATI specs than ATI. The two cards are listed on this page:

  • Ideas for developing new Mini project

    Hi All,
    we want to develop our programming skill by doing some mini project in Java technology.
    A group of 3 members want to involve in this project with IDE as JDeveloper. So anyone can suggest a mini project with some 10 days duration. We are strong in Swing-EJB. We also intersted to work in JSP,Java script. Also ready to learn new technology..
    So whichever applicable suggest us or give some ideas for the project to improve our skills.
    Note: we are one year experienced in java Programming.

    Hi Lrj1985,
    According to your description, in order to allow users to know the probability of collecting from a debtor dependent on different dimension, you nedd to produce an OLAP cube to perform this. Since you haven't done this for a few years, now what you
    are looking for is that the ideas, starting points or direction to build the OLAP cube, right?
    In this case, here are some links which describe how to build a cube step by step, please see:

  • Tips for a new ABAP programmer...

    Hello experts,
    I am a fairly new ABAP programmer that usually modifies existing reports. I am really having a hard time on understanding all those synatx. Can you guys give me tips on how to better understand reports/programs?how do you analyze reports? any tips and suggestions would really helpful to me.Thanks a lot guys!

    Hi,
    No Problem dont worry SDN will help you a lot.
    Actually every one is new for the new technologies.
    Actually here as an ABAPer 1st try to learn DE-BUGGING as much as you can.
    Try to do it from START-OF-SELECTION event 1st line on wards.
    Put a break point on start of selection line event and execute it.
    Here in debugging you need to carefully observe the behaviour of the program, logic etc etc.
    Next understand the FORMS when they are triging and their reusability.
    Under stand the Events sequence.
    Later try to obsorbe the Syntax of the commands as much as you can.
    Thanks.
    If this helps you reward with points.
