Seeking successful DVI to HDMI Conversion at 1920x1080 on a Mac Mini

I've seen lots of posts related to this topic, but nothing definitive, and I'm still trying to figure this out. Let me start by saying that:
1) I understand the option of going from DVI to VGA. That works fine on my equipment (late model Mac Mini to Sony 46" LCD XBR3).
2) I've validated the HDMI port on my TV at 1080i and I'm sure it does 1080p (i.e. 1920x1080 non-interlaced) as well, based on the specs
3) I don't care about integrating audio into the HDMI signal at this point
4) Sony support provides no help, saying it must be a computer problem
5) Apple support provides no help, saying they don't support 3rd party monitors
The lousy looking output (i.e. interpolated, shrunk, expanded, based on the combination of driver and tv "modes") I'm getting is described elsewhere on this forum. Some other things are:
1) The Mac Mini recognizes the display as "Sony TV" but only offers resolution choices up to "1090 x 1080 (interlaced)". Although that suggests that either the driver isn't current or the tv and driver aren't talking to each other properly about the tv's capabilities, that still doesn't explain the visual results I'm getting.
2) The DVI-to-HDMI converter cable says it is based on the HDMI 1.1 spec. The TV says it supports HDMI 1.3. I don't know if that's an issue.
Any help would be appreciated. This isn't the end of the world, as I can still connect through VGA, but I'd like to get the DVI-to-HDMI working so I can reserve my TV's VGA port for computers that don't have the DVI option.
Pete
P.S. Anyone have any idea when Apple is coming out with a version of the Mac Mini (or some Mac-based settop box) that supports HDMI with integrated video/audio?

Does the Sony manual make any reference to a computer connection? If so, which port does it recommend? On a lot of TVs the HDMI port can't be used successfully for a computer connection because there is always a scaler/processor active that cannot be bypassed.
You might want to check at the AVSforum.com and search for your specific Sony model number to see if anybody there is reporting success connecting a computer to the HDMI port.

    12. Can I output via Mini DisplayPort to an RCA or S-Video connection?
No. The Mini DIsplayPort connector allows output to Mini DisplayPort, DisplayPort, VGA, DVI, and HDMI connections when using the proper cables and adapters. However, output to RCA, Component, or S-Video connections is not supported.
    - The current Mini as one HDMI out. The Min somes with a HDMI to DVI adopter. Howver, the HDMI output only outputs digital signal and thus yo will need a converter to convert that digital signal to analogue composite
    - The Min also comes with a Thunderbolt port which accepts the min display connector. However. based on 12 above it does not seem to support composite. The 12 is from

  • Basic question: Is flat-screen TV + HDMI same as giant monitor on Mac Mini?

This must be an extremely basic question, though I don't see an answer in the Mac Mini FAQs or some initial searches here, so:
I just got a 40" flat-screen TV (1080). If I also get a Mac Mini with HDMI, and if I can avoid the miscellaneous display troubles that I see in posts here, will that TV act the same as a giant computer monitor? Or will it in some way remain inferior (in appearance, performance, etc.) to a dedicated computer monitor? (If so, how and why?)
Thanks much! I'm really curious about this.

Jev, when a DVI adaptor is connected from a computer to a HDMI port, the LCD steps down to emit a DVI signal and correspondingly when a MDP adaptor is connected to a HDMI port, the LCD steps down to emit a HDMI signal.
I have an EX55 Bravia connected MDP to HDMI from a 2009 Mini. The resolution and screen real-estate are perfect but not before I set Cinema at Scenes and Graphics at Video on the LCD and checked Font Smoothing at System Preferences. I can’t remember the font size I capped. The EX emits a HDMI signal. Cinema is great but Graphics are a tad sharp.
On the same floor I run a V40 Bravia connected DVI to HDMI from a 2008 Mini. Graphics is wonderful just like a large monitor without tweaking either the LCD or Mini. Here the V40 emits a DVI signal. Understandably Cinema is not as sharp but Graphics is great.
In essence your TV does not require a DVI input to emit a DVI signal.
    Keep us posted.

  • Is the HDMI standard for the late 2012 Mac mini w/4000, 1.0, 1.1, or 1.2?

Hi, I can't seem to easily find this info. What is the actual HDMI standard used on a very late 2012 MacMini 6,2 with i7 and 4000 graphics?
I understand it can support up to 1920x1200 ... What standard is that?  ... And will an HDMI to Display Port cable supply that resolution? Thanks -Jeff

  • HDMI  confusion on latest entry model Mac Mini?

I have just been looking at the Apple Store's spec sheet for the entry model Mac mini and have this query:-
It has an HDMI socket but the blurb only mentions that it can be used for multi-channel audio.
For me, the whole point of HDMI is that it can transport VIDEO to something like an attached HDTV.
Can it also work with video and if so, why have they omitted to list that in the spec sheet?

Thanks, but I am probably not buying a Mini.
I usually go for iMacs but have noticed that Minis are more powerful than I thought .  .  .  .  .  and the base model is only a third the cost of  the new 27" iMac  .  .   . .  . though it does come without the display etc. which I would need, together with the more advanced processor, video card, hard drive, RAM, keyboard, mouse etc. etc. for video editing.
Nevertheless it is quite tempting  .  .  .  maybe I'll get both in a moment of madness.
P.S.  I know I could use my 40" Sony HDTV as a display but unfortunately even the latest TVs are overscanned, resulting in the edges of the computer desktop being cutoff.

  • HDMI over the LAN CAT6 for Mac Mini

    The Mac Mini setup:
Living room: Mac Mini as a media player wired to Panasonic 3D plasma.
    Bed room: Apple Display
How could I use one Mac Mini as a player/computer in the living room, AND bedroom?
Should I pass a HDMI cable from the living room to the bedroom, (under the parquet), and connect a HDMI splitter with the Mac Mini (one HDMI to Panasonic plasma and one HDMI to the Apple Display)?
The length of the HDMI cable would have to be 15m
Is this the only possibility? I won't need to use different content @ the same time in both rooms.
The problem would be that when I will be in the bedroom in front of the Apple Display, the wireless keyboard and the Magic Mouse, will have to pass the signal trough a wall to the Mac Mini that will be in the living room, next to the TV.
I have a CAT6 network, 2 sockets in the living room, (behind the TV), and 1 socket in the bedroom. It's possible to use the network with HDMI signal with one sender, and one receiver, but both will need two CAT 6 sockets in each room. I have only 1 in the bedroom.
There are any other options available that I don't know about?

If I could ask another question regarding this... is 30 Hz poor even for desktop work? Or movies.
I believe the 30Hz is progressive and therefore for movies/video would normally look quite good. However for sports e.g. soccer which has a fast moving object i.e. the ball it would be less good. I have also seen comments suggesting that for computer use it is also less desirable particularly when you are scrolling as this entails affectively the entire screen image 'moving fast'.
This is not based on personal use as I cannot afford a 4K screen yet myself. However for DVDs 24p is considered a to give a good image for movies and this I can confirm from personal experience so 30p should be even better. Obviously 60p is better still but for that you need either a Mac Pro, iMac or MacBook Pro Retina.
It is probably going to depend on what you will be using it for. Perhaps you should consider spending a little more for a MacBook Pro Retina which can do 60 Hz.

I've seen some issues with the video adapter putting out only black and white signal with Macbook Pros. That would be an improvement for me.
I can't get SL to play with the video adaper when I plug it into my TV. I get black and white and a bounching broken up signal, as though the refresh rates don't match. I can't play around with the settings because it's impossible to see what's on screen. I have to plug my monitor back in.
This used to work fine under Leopard.

  • Macbook Pro + DVI to HDMI cable + HDTV = only 1080i?

    Hi all,
I connected my MBP to my TV via a DVI to HDMI conversion cable ($24 from Fry's), but the highest resolution I am getting is 1080i (confirmed on the computer, and the system readout on the TV). Are there other settings that I missed (in the computer or the television) that I need to configure in order to get full 1080p out of this setup? Or is it the cable? Any help on the matter would be great!
I was hoping that the picture quality from the MBP to the TV would be greater, so being able to output 1080p would really help out. I haven't tried connecting via the DVI to VGA cable, but I'd really like to run this through my receiver, and my receiver does not have a VGA in, thus my want to use HDMI.
Also, is there a setting in OSX that allows you to close the computer without it powering down into sleep mode?
Computer: Apple Macbook Pro 17" High-res 2.4 GHz
    Television: Sony BRAVIA V3000 46"
    Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR605

Hi guys, I just got my Samsung LE40M87BD working on my MacBook Pro running Leopard in full 1080p resolution. Steps:
    Install DisplayConfigX from www.3dexpress.de
    Start DisplayConfigX
Select the correct monitor in the top dropdown list
Under Monitor, my settings are (mostly default):
    Refresh rate 45.00-61.00
    Horizontal frequency 10.00-120.00
Pixel Frequency 138.50 (specified in the Samsung manual)
Default refresh rate 60 (specified in the Samsung manual)
Under Resolution, I created a new setting:
    Kind = Timing
    H V
    1920 Active 1080
    48 Front Porch 3
    32 Sync 5
    80 Back Porch 23
Untick Interlaced if it is ticked!
Select Pixel Frequency and type in 138.500
Check the following (if the numbers are not correct, you have made a mistake above):
Check that Horizontal is 66.587 KHz (specified in the Samsung manual)
Check that Refresh rate is 59.934 Hz (specified in the Samsung manual)
    Check 'Enabled'
    Click Done
    Go to Install, click Install
    Restart the system as suggested
Your monitor not here? The challenge is to find the Front Porch, Sync and Back Porch settings that work for your monitor. The trick is to check if they are in the manual, and if not, assuming that the horizontal and vertical frequencies are, Google the horizontal and vertical refresh rates - they are pretty certain to yield the right settings! E.g. I Google'd '66.587 59.934 front porch'. Alternatively, try this if you are more technical: http://www.vesa.org/Public/CVT/CVTd6r1.xls
    Hope this helps!

Getting the Viewsonic VX2450WM monitor for it. There is no HDMI on this monitor, but reviews said it's Mac mini compatible.

No, the HDMI on Mini only support digital VGA is analogue
Can the HDMI port drive analog displays (VGA displays for example) using adapters?
No.  The HDMI port will drive digital connections—such as DVI—using the adapter that came with the Mac mini, but cannot be used for analog displays such as VGA. You can purchase a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter separately to drive analog displays.

  • Conecting Mini DVI to HDMI Video Cable with my mac book pro

Hi. I just bought Mini DVI to HDMI Video Cable to connect my mac book pro to my HD TV. I connected the cables and put my TV on HDMI input. On the TV it appears the Snow Leopard Background but I can't see my desktop or the icons. What should I do to view my mac book pro on the Tv? Thanks!

    Hi y3p3v3,
On the TV it appears the Snow Leopard Background but I can't see my desktop or the icons. What should I do to view my mac book pro on the Tv? Thanks!
You've got it connected, and you're viewing it already! Connect it up again, and try dragging a window either to the left, or right, off your built-in screen. You'll find that it appears on your TV!
What you're doing is running the computer in "extended desktop" mode. That means that your TV screen is available to put things on, but won't show your menu bar, dock, or icons. Those remain on the "primary screen" which remains your MBP's built-in display.
When the TV is plugged in, go to System Preferences --> Displays
The main System Preferences window will remain on your MBP's screen, but a second one should appear on the TV as well. If you go to the one on your MBP's screen, and click the "Arrangement" tab, you'll see two screens shown in the diagram. One will have a menubar. That's your MBPs screen. You can drag the menubar to the other screen to change the primary screen to the TV.
OR, you can just click "Mirror Displays" and your TV will show the exact same picture as your MBP display. This option is the simplest and will accomplish what you want, I think.
If you have any other questions, or if you need any clarification, feel free to ask!

  • Mini Dvi to HDMI to LCD in windows 7

I have a macbook (2008, 2.1 C2D, intel 965 GMA) and i use a mini dvi - hdmi adapter to connect to my sanyo lcd, which is basically a plug and play process under snow leopard. However, say i want to use windows 7 to play a game through the tv - fail. The computer, under the same conditions as before, with updated drivers and liberal application of swearing, fails to recognize the tv. Any help?

I have a MacMini that is a intel core solo and has the DVI port not the mini-DVI.
I was able to load win7 but only after connecting the MacMini to an LCD monitor via DVI-to-VGA converter that came with my mac mini.
I am running snow leopard on the mac side and the video works great in 1080p via DVI cable direct to my DLP tv. but when I loaded win7 the tv couldn't display the video feed. The tv read "not compatible data". The DLP tv has a VGA input and win7 is running fine on it.
I am looking for a way to enable the video card to give the same quality on the win7 side as the OS X side, so that I can go back to the DVI cable and the 1080p I was getting in snow leopard.

  • Brand New Mac Mini HDMI Sync Issues

I just purchased (as in 3/29/13) a late 2012 2.5GHz 500GB hard drive 4GB RAM Intel Dual Core i5 Mac Mini MD387LL/A. It is connected to a 27" Samsung B350 S27B350H monitor via HDMI to HDMI.
I was excited to set it up. I was downloading the 10.8.3 update as I had read about the flickering problems. In the middle of the download the computer went to sleep. Upon waking the monitor flickered badly then went black. Like it was not receiving a signal.
I powered the monitor down, and turned it back on. It had a display for about two seconds then went black again. I tried this several times with the same result each time.
Finally the update to 10.8.3 was complete and....the problem persisted.
I decided to see if it was the cable or the monitor. I connected the monitor directly to my Xbox with a different HDMI cable and it worked perfectly. So I switched to the original HDMI cable I used with the Mac Mini, again it was perfect!
Upon reconnecting the monitor to the Mac Mini it was working again...for about an hour now the problem is back.
I am completely frustrated and disappointed.
    Suggestions?
Or do I just return the Mac Mini for a different one?

Were you able to get your display working? I have an LG 27" at home connected to a Mid 2012 (June) MacBook Air 13" that has absolutely no issues. However, I just obtained the same Samsung monitor you have and appear to be having the same issue.
The only solution that I have found is to unplug the power from the back of the monitor or at the power supply each time my computer either wakes from sleep, screensaver, or a display that is powered off. This seems to be true via the following connections:
    1. HDMI to DVI thunderbolt adapter
    2. HDMI to Thunderbolt adapter
The display powers on with a slight flicker and then will immediately stop displaying the image on screen. What's especially strange here is the MacBook Air still believes the display is connected -- my login screen or active apps that are displayed on the external monitor do not move to the MacBook Air display as if it's no longer connected.
I hope someone has a solution to this issue! Thanks!
