Seem to have an "extra" Library folder...huh?!

Hi all,
Up until recently I've been trying to figure out why my home>Library folder had mysteriously moved inside my home>Documents folder. Finally having the time to do some detective work I used Time Machine to see when the change happened....right around when I went from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion.
In searching the forums, I discovered that my home>Library folder is still there; it's just invisible. However, it's now even more a mystery as to where the home>Documents>Library folder came from or why it exists!
As it is now I have FOUR Library folders on my iMac:  1) Library at the top level of the hard drive, 2) System>Library, 3) home>Library (invisible), and 4) home>Documents>Library (which appeared the same time my home>Library folder became invisible).
This "rogue" Library folder is like the middle of a Venn diagram of the top level and System>library; it shares some, but not all of the top level Library folders, and some, but not all, of the System>Library folders.
Does this make sense to anyone? I started thinking that my file synchronization app had caused the problem (I was using Chronosync to sync my Document folders between my iMac and my late 2006 MacBook running Snow Leopard), but there's no reason synching should have picked up a folder that usually resides outside the Documents folder. Since then my MacBook's HD took a dive and I don't have a backup of it that goes back to the period in question when the folders did their disappearing/reappearing act.
Any thoughts?
TIA,
Kath

Hi there,
So I am able to see the Library in my home folder after reading the option open in the "Go" menu tip in another discussion, but thanks also for making sure I had it.
So then, on comparing all 4 Library folders again, it looks like everything in the "rogue" home>Documents>Library is contained in the top level Library (the one that resides at the same level as the System, Applications, Developer and Users folders).
The rogue Library folder looks like a very incomplete version of the top level System folder, containing only 25 duplicate folders of the main level Library's 67 folders (opening those folders showed the rogue Library had the same, or fewer, nested folders and files within).
So perhaps I can just delete it? I definitely don't think it belongs....but it does bother me not knowing how it got there, especially in its "incomplete" state, unless it's been partially building itself since it arrived in the Documents folder.
Strange....

  • I appear to have a duplicate library folder which is taking up a lot of space (one outside my user profile and one inside). How do I know which one to delete?

I seem to have duplicated my 'Library' folder - one inside and one outside my USER folder. (additionally there is a Library folder in the systems folder - but that should be there!).  I do not know which one to delete (both 8-10 GB) Help!!

There should be at least THREE Library folders:
1- Inside your "home" folder, the one with your user name.
2- At the "root" level of your boot volume.
3- Inside the System folder at the "root" level of your boot volume.
If it's one of those three, ignore them - especially if you don't know exactly what you're doing.
If it's some other Library folder just floating around somewhere, you can safely delete it. Note that every user account will have its own Library folder inside its "home" folder, and these you should also leave alone.

I would like to create the a swatch, add it to the library and import to the swatch panel.  The help pages available relate to earlier versions of Muse, which does not work with the 2014.2 release version that I have.  I have created a library folder, imported the colour swatch as just 4 colours as a mulib file.  I drag the four colours on to the muse page in design view but that is as far as I get.  Can anyone help?  Thanks

I don't know since I don't share anything. You'll have to peruse the help files and check the permissions and ACLs on the Shared folder. According to the permissions on the Shared folder everyone can R&W. If you want those to be inherited by everything dropped into the folder, add an ACL for

  • Any idea what could have happened to profiles that seem to have disappeared from profile folder?

I wanted to experiment with profiles so I created a new profile called "temp". This seemed to work but when I tried to go back and reselect any of the older profiles I received an error message saying that this couldn't be done while any instance of Firefox was running (none were).
Also, when I opened the Profiles folder I only found the "temp" profile I had just created but none of the other, older profiles even though they were listed in Profile Manager.
I've lost my bookmarks and who knows what else. I did a search of my C drive to see if perhaps the missing profiles might have been located in a folder other than the profiles folder. I even did a search for .sqlite files. I did find some very old versions of my profiles that I had copied over from a previous computer but these did not have my up-to-date bookmarks. Any ideas? Seems crazy, I know. Thanks.

Thank you, cor-el, for this information. It certainly explains why I was getting the message that Firefox was already running.
I can see in my profiles.ini file (see attached image) the (4) profiles that also show up in the profile manager. The the question remains, what happened to the profile file, which I now believe was the "Richard III" profile, that was in use prior to my creating my "temp" profile (that I recently renamed "Feb 2011")? No attempt was made to delete the "Richard III" profile either with the profile manager or otherwise. Simply creating the "temp" profile seems to have blown the "Richard III" profile out of existence, leaving not a trace.
As you can see, the "Richard III" profile's path leads, as usual, to the Profile folder. But only the "temp" profile is found there.
One of the specified paths, the one for the "Richard" profile, leads to a folder that's not directly related to Mozilla. The "Richard" profile (which I used as bases for the "Feb 2011" profile) is a profile that's over a year old. I assume it became the bases, way back when, for the "Richard III" profile, the profile that's apparently vaporized.
I hope this makes sense even if the loss of the "Richard III" profile does not.

  • I've seemed to have lost a library

I can not find the Library folder under my home folders in Finder. I use a billing program that saves a database in a folder nested in that home library. When i backup the database, it shows the db being saved in my library/nested folders. However, when i go to my home folders, there is no folder for my library. Have I somehow hit a setting that does not allow the library to show up in Finder?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Chris

It's now hidden in Lion.  In the menubar  Finder > Go > hold the option key down > select library in the list.
Once a finder screen is open, save a shortcut on Finders toolbar or sidebar.

  • Particle emitters have disapeared from library folder.

I opened motion day and all of the particle emitters that came with the program are gone. There are zero items in the folder! Does anyone know how to fix this?

    hi
go to the preferences folder, which is in the Library folder in your users folder, find the one called com.apple.motion.plist and throw it away. Reinstalling the suite doesnt over-write preferences file.

  • Why does safari seem to have an extra window?

New windows in Safari (5.1.9 (6534.59.8)) open, as always, shifted to the right a little from the prior window. I know the location of the first window when Safari opens because I always want it to be in the same position - therefore I always terminate the program with that window, and only that window, open. However, occasionally, when I start Safari, the window that appears is in the normal second window position. That makes me suspect that there was a window open in the prior session that I didn't know about. I am certain that there was no second visible window open when I quit the program, so I suspect something nefarious. Any ideas about this?

Most likely just a cache issue.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Quit and relaunch Safari.

  • External hard drives, media folders and iTunes Library folder

    Hello All,
I have an external hard drive with all of my iTunes media files and am wondering if I should also have the iTunes Library folder and related iTunes files on this same drive. Is this the preferred arrangement? It seems that backups would be greatly simplified.
If it is a preferred solution that all these files reside on one drive location, how do I set these files to the external drive?
Thanks in advance for any assistance?

    Warren Willows wrote:

no, i back up my iTunes folder (which is devoid of media content as my music files etc. are on the external).
the +apple of my eye+ is the +*iTunes library file+*
which is the heart (database) of the iTunes library (which is the whole thing: media files, support files, artwork folder)
while your media files are on an external drive which you mirror to a second drive.
    exactly.
Do you use Chronosync to mirror your externals?
    yes.
    Have you consider a NAS?
well, i have a test library on an external USB drive hanging off my TC. it's not a NAS exactly but pretty similar.
i found that a firewire 800 external HD @ 7200 rpm provides superior speed to any networked library which is important (to me) if you e.g. stream HD movies to an TV and don't want to experience a lot of buffering.

  • Why does Iphone sync the photo library folder when it is not checked in itunes.

    Hi,
I have any iPhone 4 running 4.3.3. iOS. I recently synced photos in iphoto 6 and selected the folders i wanted I wanted to sync in iTunes.  after the sync, the folders that i wanted to sync are there, but also the photo library folder is there.  I wish to not have the photo library folder there since it is just a duplication of what is in the other folders that i have asked iTunes to sync.   Any Suggestions???

Well, actually it is not a duplication. The Photos app stores photos the same way that iPhoto does. All photos synced to your phone are stored in the "Photo Library". The photos you see in the various albums/folders are really pointers to the actual photos which are in your photo library. They are not duplicates, and no you cannot get rid of the Photo Library.

  • Seems to be an extra click between slides?

    Hi all,
I am fairly new to Keynote, and Macs in general. I am in the middle of putting together a pretty straightforward presentation, but it is heavy on the builds. This is what I am running into: I finish with the builds and then group all of them together for one build out of everything on the screen, which brings me to a blank screen, and I seem to have an extra click before I start building the next slide. Is there anyway to have the build out effects used and not have that extra presentation click to begin the next slide. I hope this is clear.
The only solution I seem to be thinking of is leaving everything on the screen after it was built and not have build outs, and just use an "immediate" regular slide transition. Yes or no? I dunno, I haven't really tried yet.
Thanks very much in advance of the help I know I am going to get,
    Steve

    Welcome to the discussions, Wondermirk.
You just have to change the "Slide" transition as well so that it goes to the next slide "Automatic" instead of "On-Click". You'll find this in the inspector in the Slide pane under the "Transition" tab.

  • Huge Library folder?

I am running 10.4.7 on a 15" MBP with a 100GB 7200 RPM drive. Today I noticed my drive was down to 16GB free and I did not think I had used that much. I started going through folders to find the hogs and I discoverd my Library folder was 24GB. Is this normal? Cn I reduce it? Almot all for the files are in apple update folders. Can these be cleaned?
    15" MBP, 17 iMac, iBook 14, PM7600 G3266, IIvx   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I am a first time Mac user and I just bough my Macbook 2 weeks ago....I was checking my system information today and I was surprised by the fact I am using already 31.64GB of my 74.21Gb available, so like other users I went to check my folders to see what was taking so much space and I also found a huge library folder.
When I click on "Machintosh HD" on my desktop it opens on folder and I have a "library" folder there with 9.3 GB inside it has many many folders that looks like system stuff. So inside "System" folder I have only another "library" folder that has 1.85 GB.
I checked caches folders on both library and they have pretty much nothing on there...so it's not responsible for how big this folder are.
My question is: Is it normal to have such a big library folder? it's taking more space than anything else...I don't think it's normally to have almost half of my hard drive taken in 2 weeks of use, so I was wondering if I maybe duplicated this folders or messed up somehow.
    What can I do?
I appreciate all the help I can get...as I said Im a new Mac user and still figuring out how to work on it...kinda lost here
    Thanks!!!

    Hi
Yes this can be many things - and I can only guess/suggest.
    A. a very common origin to make the Mac un-happy is to - PANIC-HALT - when the round multicolored thing appear.
So much can go wrong by doing this - and if done often problem builds up that can result in a real disaster.
    B. NEVER - move or alter any folder named - iMovie Event's resp. iMovie Project's - as iMovie has no search function - moving them results in that iMovie get's 100% lost.
One can move them - but this HAS TO BE done within the iMovie application (as it is up and running)
    C. preference files - there are TWO or more Libraries on Your Mac. First and easy to find is the one You see when opening Your Start-Up Hard Disk window = Root Library == the WRONG ONE
What we need to find is the one in Your User-Account folder (icon as a house) - and this is in Mac OS X.7, X.8 and X.9 HIDDEN. To see it do:
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )
    or - do like this.
On the Finder window at the top left of the screen,
Hold down the Option key and clicked on Go.
This allowed You to see the Library folder and select it.
Then keep the Option button pressed down in order to see and select the Library folder.
Once found it, You are able to navigate to the iMovie preferences file and move it to the trash.  iMovie then start’s up fine!
Now here in Your User Library - find Preferences and trash
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
I Prefere another way to find out if this is the problem.
(after all folders (iMovie Event/Projects are moved into original place)
    • go up to Apple Menu
    • Down to System Pref's
    • Select Accounts - Create a new User
    • Go down the Apple menu - Log OUT
    • Log into as the new User
    Now try iMovie
Does it work at all ? (Yes You don't see Events or Projects in Your original Account just now)
If so - Then we know that there is a corrupted pref file to be trashed.
Else - the problem are much more severe.
    D. After Panic Halt / Forced Quit - I always do -. to keep disasters on arms length.
    • Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
    • Start from other HD or DVD - then run Repair Hard Disk (Apple Disk Util tool)
