Seem to have froze up while doing a disk erase and new install...

In preparing to wipe clean my old powerbook to sell it off, I am running through a complete disk erase (booting from install disks). It has been running for several days now, and the progress bar is probably 70% of the way over, but I think it has stalled out. It went through writing random data, and is now mapping disk partition, but the pointer is the swirling rainbow (indicates low memory, right?), and I don't think there's been any progress for a day or so. Even though I had 10.4 on the machine, the boot disks are 10.3...
If it has stalled out, can i somehow restart the entire process, or what should i do to not totally screw things up? Even though i have the install disks in, I'm afraid that with the partition not being done, i won't be able to re-install the OS. I selected 1 partition for the erase, and did the 8-pass option. I have 768MB RAM in the machine...not a lot, that's why I'm wondering if i've somehow run out of sufficient memory to complete the operation.
Any suggestions on what i should do next? thanks.

Hi Roger!
"...did the 8-pass option."
That could take days & days!
If you're in no hurry, don't interrupt it yet. Watch it for a while to see if there is any progress.

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. If not, the machine needs to be serviced. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by the warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

was just loading indesign and cannot start it. seem to have no rights for some presets. i deinstalled and installed new, same problem. who can help?

Not easy if vital information is missing. Sometimes it seems like people are using the internet the first time...
    What version of Indesign?
What OS? "Rights" sounds like Windows
What is happening when starting it?
If Windows, where was it installed?
If Windows, do you have admin permissions?

New photoshop cc seems to have a bug wrt the toolbar's foreground and background squares. When I pick a color to use as a fill the squares show gray and the fill is gray rather than the color picked. Never had a problem with this in previous version of PS. Could something be set up or initialized to cause this state of affairs?

Change your document from Grayscale to RGB, or change the selected channel to the RGB data instead of a mask.

  • My Mac is three years old and has crashed about 10 times. I have had to erase and re install Snow Leopard every time, yet it keeps happening.

I have communicated with apple care every time and they keep telling me there is no problem,so why does it keep crashing. I took it in for repair under warrenty and they told me there was nothing wrong with it yet it crashed again two weeks later and has crashed another 5 times since then,I have to erase and re install each time. It has now crashed again , i have re installed snow leopard and all i get is the spinning wheel and nothing loads..Im over it. I have several mac products including two other imacs that are running fine..

Run Apple Hardware Test on your computer, the next time your machine crashes try running disk utility on the hard drive.  You shouldn't need to reinstall the OS each time your system crashes, if that the case then you could have a bad hard drive.

Your profile says you have 10.6, so why bother with the original 10.5 OS?
But to your question, before you erase anything, make a backup of your data for safe keeping and restoration. Having an external hard drive for this purpose is most useful.

LaCie doesnt make ANYTHING.  It contains a Seagate 3.5" 5400RPM HD.
Check the HD on another computer, if nothing, your SATA bridge is fried, or the HD (very unlikely since its a Seagate inside)
Youd have to crack open the HD, remove the SATA bridge cart thats plugged into the HD and put the HD into an enclosure or a HD dock to get the data
those external HD use a 50 cent SATA bridge famous for failing.  The curse of all the good HD externals is the junk 3rd party SATA bridges attached to them that crash and burn.

  • If I have to erase and re-install......

Will I lose all of my applications during that process? My SL install failed and DU says the disk cannot be repaired, back up files, and erase and re-install the OS.
Do I lose all of my applications when I do this? Illustrator, Photoshop, etc???

Will I lose all of my applications during that process? My SL install failed and DU says the disk cannot be repaired, back up files, and erase and re-install the OS.
A quick note here: you can be sure that the install failed because the disk was damaged, not the other way around. I just want to head off yet another string of "Snow Leopard destroyed my system!" complaints before they get started.
Now, to a solution... when you say Disk Utility can't repair, was that when you were booted from the Snow Leopard disk and running Disk Utility from there? I'm assuming so, but if not, you need to try that... Disk Utility can't repair the current boot drive. If Disk Utility isn't working, you can try [DiskWarrior|http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html] or [TechTool Pro|http://www.micromat.com>. Neither of these are free, unfortunately, but they're both excellent utilities. If DU, DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro can't fix the drive, it's not fixable.
If it turns out not to be fixable, you'll need to erase the hard drive and reinstall everything. If erasing doesn't work, your hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced.
Do I lose all of my applications when I do this? Illustrator, Photoshop, etc???
You will have to reinstall those apps from the original install disks. If you don't have the disks anymore (I'd have to question why not), then you should have a backup that includes those apps and all support files... this is a less-desirable option, since you may not know where all the support files are and may have trouble getting the apps working again.
Also, as was already pointed out, your documents are more important and less replaceable than your applications. Do you have a backup of your documents? If not, you're going to need to think about file recovery before erasing the hard drive. Don't expect to recover everything, though. I don't have experience with Mac file recovery utilities... you never need one if you keep good backups. Google "mac file recovery" for some options.

  • HT4910 I seem to have deleted all my films on my iPad and can't find them on my pc or iCloud. How do I get them back

Whilst updating my iPad I seem to have deleted my downloaded films from iTunes. They have also gone form my PC and nowhere to be found. How do I locate and download them again?

Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519 - enabled with iTunes 10.3 and newer; not available in all countries; apps, books (not audiobooks), music, t.v. shows, and movies (some - not all studios have permitted this). Movies currently available in the USA only. Downloading previously purchased movies and TV shows requires iTunes 10.6 or later.  Discontinued items not available. For items not included in the iCloud list, or locations or computer systems where iCloud is not (yet?) available, you only get one download per fee paid.  Apple notes it is your responsibility to back up your purchases.

  • I have a licensing Problem reinstaling Acrobat 9 now under new installed OSX Yosemite.

Troubleshooting incl. deleting directories etc. doesn't help. Any idea?
The repair tool doesn't seem to work (Adobe - Adobe Licensing Repair Tool), the launcher comes up with the error message, it's not longer supporting Power PC
I have a late 2011 MB Pro with a new Install of OX Yosemite

Here is the compatibility statement for Acrobat Pro on a MAC:
Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro (English, French, German) on Mac OS
PowerPC G4, G5, or Intel processors
    Mac OS X v. 10.4.11 or 10.5
256 MB of RAM (512 MB recommended)
1.42 GB of available hard-disk space
    1,024 x 768 screen resolution
    DVD drive
I am not sure how to interpret the OS for a MAC, but it is what is stated. I don't think that Adobe certifies AA 9 for Yosemite, but that does not mean it will not work.

  • Where do I send a long list of problems I have with non-functionality with the Lion OSX and new Safari for Lion.

In the past two weeks I have been documenting my Lion problems.
First, Arrows gone from finder windows; makes it difficult in comparing long lists of files in folder, or compare documents when reviewing line by line. This is obviously a change by people who do not compare long lists in windows comparing files between versions of projects ... the click to next screen is NOT equal to arrows.
Second, Finder Redreaw - doesn't. Move files to a fold, if there are a lot of files, they image of the files being moved remains in finder (see attached screen capture) until Finder is restarted and if COPY function is running. last files in Copy queue are not copied.
Screen capture 5 minutes after moving files to a folder - the selected file images are still in Finder after the move was completed.
Third, it is SLOW, particularly going to an "Attach file" in email, drawing the content of a folder to select an attachment is long enough for me to go to the kitchen, get a drink and come back. Just like the old days of OS7.
Fourth, shifting/recentering screen away from where I am working. Several programs, browsers, Adobe Photoshop/inDesign, and dear old Pages re center my screen - not to the center, but if I choose 30 of 70 images in a folder, it will shift … somewhere else in the folder instead of where I just clicked. If I am working on a document in inDesign or PhotoShop it will do the same - the cursor and screen drift elsewhere to find something it has been amused by. Sometimes it is a word, or a file, but often it is off the pastboard and on the etherial pasteboard on which the pages sit. Or if I'm zoomed in on an image, it moves to somewhere else.
I use a mouse and keyboard, both Apple wireless. I do not use a trackpad, but have a tablet/stylus I am afraid to put into the mix until this crap is stopped.
Fifth, SAVE AS… is gone. You must unlock, duplicate and edit the duplicate … and must rename it in Finder, or use EXPORT to save as the same format under a new name. SAVE AS… worked. Not broke, why fix it?
Personal Comment: The problems seem to be the triumph of coked up software engineers ooohing and aaahing over "Wouldn't it be cool if..."   Cool, if they were Microsoft, and required everyone change how they have worked on Macs for the past (almost) three decades. Triumph of brainstorming over functionality.
Sixth, I can't use Cocoa Booklet, but that really started in OSX 10.6 "Snow Leopard". Most of my X11/Cocoa programs stopped worked about that time. Apple is no longer supporting "open source"?
    But Wait! There's More...
Seventh, Tonight, trying to download a 1.7 gig archive onto a disk where 280 Gigs were supposedly free, it would not download because, according to the wonderful new Safari and the wonderful new Lion, there is not enough disk space to download a 1.7 gig file in a mere 280 Gigs of free space.
I might be able to move Snow Leopard onto the iMac, but my deciding factor was that Apple, in its wisdom, decided to make iBook Author unable to run under Snow Leopard. So moving to Snow Leopard means I have lost the ONLY benefit I get from the new computer and the new system.
    This really stinks.

  • Reinstalled Aperture after a computer erase and re-install and now it will not open. Anyone have a solution? I'm operating on 10.6.8 and have an older version of Aperture (2010)

I re-installed Aperture after a computer erase and disk repair. Reinstalled from my back-up hard drive using migration assitant. Now it will not open. The message I get is this: Aperture cannot b opened because of a problem. Then goes on to say "check with the developer blah blah blah..." even though this is an Apple product. These are the things that drive me to distraction. Anyway, does anyone have a suggestion for a fix??

    Your Aperture version?
Is your signature Mac OS X (10.4) current?
Reinstalled from my back-up hard drive using migration assitant. Now it will not open.
Aperture is best be reinstalled by running the installer, not by migrating.
Before you spend money, reinstall Aperture from your installation media (or from the Trial version download  Aperture 3.1 Trial     , if you are running Aperture 3)
Then update it immediately from the Apple  menu> Software update, launch it, and enter your serial number(s).
Are you really sure that there is no crash log?
The message you are quoting is usually a part of the crash report, when Aperture crashes directly on opening. Do you see this?
Aperture cannot be opened because of a problem.
Check with the developer to make sure Aperture works with this version of OS X. You may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install available updates for the application and OS X.
This report will be sent to Apple automatically.
And what we would need to see, are the first 50 lines of the  "This report ...."
