Seems Firefox is suddenly using a lot of CPU power
My desktop, recently, started sounding like it was really laboring while I wander around the net. And there's a delay as I type messages like this... the letters show up a second or two behind the keystrokes.
I looked at CPU usage (Win XP with all updates) and while I'm doing this, it sometimes peaks to 35% or higher for Firefox.exe.
My laptop has recently started telling me Firefox is using a lot of memory and I should close and restart Firefox. (Also updated Win XP)
It's becoming a big PITA...
It didn't show up when i searched for the problem on Google and it didn't show up when i search here on Firefox's support site either.
And the reason it didn't because it's mostly not about my problem.
'''If' it was one of those things then i would have a high CPU usage the minute i opened my browser, but i don't.'''
'''It will use a lot of CPU power (after a couple of hours) even if i don't do anything '''
And yes hardware acceleration is on and so is submit performance data and i use Ad Block Plus, and there isn't a correctly working theme or add-on out there that could use 50-60% of a 3.2GHz quad core CPU
I don't think this is something that can be fixed that easily

Firefox 9 after a while starts using a lot of CPU power, need help!
After a while (2 hours or more) firefox 9 (not the plugin container) starts eating up more and more CPU power, usually just to 25% (because usually i close it and restart it after that), but today i had work to do and i couldn't restart it right then and that resulted in firefix using about 50-60% of a 4 core 3.2GHz CPU (AMD Phenom II X4 955).
I'm not doing anything extraordinary just writing emails and just plain normal browsing)
I only notice this because my CPU fan speeds up and makes a lot more noise if using more then 20% CPU power.
I'm pretty sure regular users wouldn't notice anything until it started to slow down their whole PC
I'm using Firefox 9.0.1 running on Win 7 64bit, i have about 20-30 tabs always open (loading) and i haven't tried disabling any add-ons.
I've read on forums that this might have something to do with flash data piling up, or with having to many tabs open.It didn't show up when i searched for the problem on Google and it didn't show up when i search here on Firefox's support site either.

Does Time Machine use a lot of CPU power if I leave it on ?
If I leave Time Machine on and have it automatically back up every hour, will that use much of my cpu ?
minimal usage after the initial backup.
Look at your Activity Monitor and see for yourself.

Hello
In my application I have a general scroll that contains a lot of tables and tabs.
The scroll is working slow and is using a lot of CPU power.
Table scrolls are working fine.
Could be something wrong in the code?
Thank youOf course there could be something wrong in your code. Can you post an SSCCE that reproduces this behaviour?

Ditto Using A Lot Of CPU? Fans Run Often
It seems to be the culprit in causing the fans to run fast since installing SL. I stop the process from the Activity Monitor but it starts back. AM shows ditto at 90% when it's running. The fans come on, I stop ditto and they slow down, later the fans come on again, I check and ditto is running again and at 90%...............
Actually resolved this. Related to unzip issue.
Attempting to unzip some files locks up the Archive Utility. Force Quitting the Archive Utility leaves ditto open and using a lot of CPU.
Therefore, I'm using The Unarchiver (as kindly suggested by someone on my unzip problem post) at least until Apple updates the Archive Utility. -
Is Photos using a lot of CPU?
Photos is now using a lot of CPU. This is after it converted my iPhoto library. Is this normal? Is anyone else seeing this on their machine? Here's a screen shot with
Photos hidden (not actively being used). It's probably still building the library and optimizing. Mine is still way up there as well. I'm going to let it run over night and see where it's at in the morning.

I had been using iTunes for a few hours on my Powerbook and noticed it was using a lot of cpu (about 30-40%) for just playing a song.
I quit the application, and then noticed the following message in my console at around that time:
Jan 19 17:23:16 My-Powerbook mDNSResponder: -1: DNSServiceResolve("My Music", "daap.tcp.", "local.") failed: Client id -1 invalid (-65549)
This looks like it was doing some DNS operation that couldn't be completed?
The application now is working fine after restarting it with the usual sub-10% activity level.
This is iTunes 6.0.2 and the ministore is disabled. Playing was just to local speakers from the local library.
Thanks for any help

Sockd process uses a lot of CPU time
Hi,
I'm running the Sun Java System Web Proxy Server version 4.02 on a SunFire V210 dual processor box running Solaris 10 with the default socks5.conf for testing.
Just browsing a few web pages in Firefox or IE using the socks proxy boosts CPU usage from the sockd process to a staggering 50% and stay there for several minutes.
Comparing with the old NEC reference Socks5 daemon the Sun version is really performing badly.
The system is pretty standard though I have tuned /etc/system and the tcp stack using recommendations in the proxy administration manual. All Solaris 10 patches are installed.
prstat output:
PID USERNAME SIZE RSS STATE PRI NICE TIME CPU PROCESS/NLWP
24519 proxy 6664K 4384K cpu1 0 10 0:11:18 50% sockd/43Any ideas what's wrong or do I have to stick with the old NEC reference daemon?

I switch on my pc and open Firefox and then the whole pc slows down to a total crawl, the page i am trying to open will take about 5 minutes to open. I try to close Frirefox but the whole program freezes and I have to force close it, sometimes I have to shut down the entire computer and start again. When I open task manager to see if there are other things running in the background it shows Firefox as using up a whopping 90-99% of my cpu power. If I wait for up to 20 minutes from when I first turn on my pc the problem seems to go away. But there are no other programs running on the machine to make it so slow. Not sure if this is the usual crap I have to deal with for running Vista or if its something to do with your latest update, I had no problems until after I had the update.

This behavior became apparent after the last couple of Firefox version updates. Current Firefox version is 21.0. My PC is an IBM ThinkCentre running @ 3.0 Ghz Intel CPU with 1.5 Gigs PC3200 DDR ram. With or without any other Windows apps open, whether I'm on line just idling on my home page (Google) or any other web page or entering / receiving data, several minutes into a session, the MS XP pro SP3 task manager shows Firefox cyclically using 50% (and more) CPU resources for 8-10 seconds then 1-5% CPU resources for 1-2 seconds. Closing & restarting Firefox, allows me a few minutes of speedy surfing. My ISP is AT&T 2nd tier DSL with a download thruput of 300 (+) MB (not Mb) / second (altho, most of the time I'm just viewing a web page or idling, without downloading or uploading any data).
What has changed? My PC & all of its software have remained the same with the exception of MS security updates, Adobe Reader updates, & Firefox updates (without adding any additional plug ins, add ons, etc., with each update).
What the...! For the past several minutes that I've been inputting data here, the task manager showed a jump of only 13% cpu usage (ever so briefly) by Firefox & only then when I switched between the task manager & Firefox. Intermittent anomalies are gonna be the death of me...
Well, this is an annoyance, albeit an intermittent one. Ah, I pine for the days when I heard about & believed in "seamless integration"...any thots that might help resolve this issue sure would be appreciated.Hello,
The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
To Reset Firefox do the following:
#Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
#Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.

Clean sl installation, latest flash. I just found out that flash uses quite a lot of CPU, it wasn’t this bad with Leopard. Sometimes when browsing on regular news sites, I see flash uses up to 130% of my CPU. That is a failure!
I am not interested in any plugin, so I just temporary disable plugins from Safari preset meny.

Does updating multiple apps on my MBP use a lot of battery power?
Tonight my MBP battery % dropped AFTER I updated seven iTunes apps, most being bug fixes. It went from 85% to 73% after the updates were completed. Earlier I was using my Beats Pill with NO drop. I had already put the Beats Pill off by the time I did the updates.
Do updates use THAT much battery power?Do you mean Mac app store apps? Running Mavericks on a 2011 Macbook Pro should handle it fine, but it can depends on the type and size of the seven apps. It also depends on you wi-fi connection and your screen/keyboard brightness. Wi-fi updates can use a lot of battery because it's time consuming, especially if they're large files.

Long running processes using a lot of CPU
Hi all,
We have a clustered environment and on both the DB nodes there are processes that is taking a lot of CPU and runs a really long time. The load of the servers get really high and performance degrades drastically.
I've traced the processes and the module is usually a combination of the following:
icx.por.rcv.server.ReceiveItemsAM
icx.por.reqmgmt.server.ReqMgmtAM
I know it has something to do with Purchase Orders.
Can someone please give me more info on this processes and what I can do about them?
Thanks in advance...Step by Step to fix your Mac

Updated I Web on Leopard - now uses 80-90% of CPU power!
Hi,
I manage several websites using Iweb every day. I just updated ("small bug fixes"), and now it's worse than ever, using 80-90% of CPU in my Activity Monitor without even doing anything in the program, just opening it and letting it sit for a second.
I do have an older Macbook - I have 2 GHz Intel Core Duo and 2GB Ram - but I've been running several applications simultaneously including Iweb with no issues.
Can I downgrade to the old version? Can Apple warn me when an upgrade may not be compatible with my system?
Thank you,
JDWhat version of iWeb are you running? What level of Leopard are you at? After updating did you repair disk permissions with Disk Uitlitiy?
Try the following:
delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your Home()/Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
launch iWeb and try again.

Firefox using a lot of CPU (90%+ at times)
I am running firefox version 26.0 on a Macbook Pro OS X version 10.6.8 and I am running these extensions http://i.imgur.com/Co4NlGQ.png and http://i.imgur.com/Co4NlGQ.png . I am also using these plugins http://i.imgur.com/ZO55Lmq and http://i.imgur.com/IapcvJY and I have disabled all of the plugins, and that did not help as the CPU usage still fluctuated from about 10% usage all the way up to 100%.
I have checked to see if the plugins are up to date, and I updated one of them, but the newest Java Applet Plugin update only works with Maverick, which I do not have. Quicktime says that it's not up to date, but when I checked the software update on my Mac, it says that there are no updates available.
Image of the plugins that I checked to see if they were up to date http://i.imgur.com/fPuV8vD and http://i.imgur.com/7Uwp5vX and http://i.imgur.com/N0Cz9Tp aaand http://i.imgur.com/6FIwVTv .
Here is an image of my activity monitor (I had all plugins disabled here) http://i.imgur.com/j6xUudo . As you can see, the CPU usage is 99.6%, which is staggering considering I only opened a webpage (reddit) and was not running videos and the like. And here's an image of my activity monitor with more information http://imgur.com/zuY5iMu . The Real Mem can go all the way up the 2 GBs, which is a bit worrisome.
I have tried resetting Firefox, which didn't help, I have tried starting FF in safe mode, which didn't help, and I have even tried reinstalling FF, which didn't help. I also tried disabling "using hardware acceleration," restarted my computer, and the issue was not fixed. I used CCleaner to clear temporary files and the like, but it didn't do any good.
I really want to be able to use Firefox, because I'm starting to distrust Chrome, but if FF is using that much memory and CPU, I'm not sure I can continue using that browser.
I feel like I've hit dead ends on everything that I've tried, so I'm starting to give up hope. Does anyone help any idea or suggestion as to what I should try/ do?I just realized that I just gave the information for the browser without the extensions that I had installed. Here's the accurate Troubleshooting Information with the extensions:
Hopefully that is of some help.
