Seems like my linksys e1200 router slowed down my iMac.

is it the kind of router i have that doesn't talk to apples? someone mentioned that was a possibility, but i have no idea. i don't mean our wireless connection was slow, but the actual desktop computer. (sorry, i'm not very techy!, i'm not even sure i'm posting this question correctly).

A router can slow down any computer if it is not securely connected to the internet, or if too many machines are using it.  A router can also slow down any computer if its firmware is not known to be compatible with the computer's installed operating system.  Check with Linksys to ensure that the later is not an issue.  Is this a wired or wireless router?

  • Linksys Wireless Router Slowing Down Internet

Hi, I currently have Optimum Online boost through cablevision. I noticed I wasn't getting speeds anywhere near what Optimum stated my plan includes so I called them up. After troubleshooting they asked me to connect the cable modem directly into my laptop(bypassing the router) and run a speed test and then do the same speed test when accessing internet over the wireless router. The results of this showed that the wireless router was significantly slowing down my internet connection. I currently have a Linksys WRT54G V6 with firmware: v1.00.7, Feb. 16, 2006. Anyone have any ideas what in the router is slowing me down. FYI I am very close to the wireless router(excellent connection) with no interference around(my laptop and a dekstop are the only thing connected to the router) and I have tested this on multiple laptops wirelessly and it all shows that something in the router is slowing this down. MAC Filtering is disabled and the encryption is WPA - Personal AES-CCMP. Thanks! Hope someone can help. ppc

What you describe sounds like a hardware issue. Unfortunately, you'll need to get that checked out by Apple. If you have an Apple Store near you, make an appointment with the Genius Bar and take the machine in for evaluation.

  • Linksys E1200 Router not saving Port Forwarding changes

    Hi!
I am currently attempting to port forward on my Linksys E1200 Router and am not succeeding in saving my settings. I am attempting to open port 25565 though both Single Port Forwarding and Port Range Forwarding, and whenever I click the "save settings" button, I receive a full window message stating that my changes have been saved. Upon clicking this, I return to the previous screen whereupon my changes have been erased and my port has not been forwarded. Can anyone assist me with this? I've searched for hours through forums and tech help websites, but I can't find anyone else with this issue.
    Issue:
Linksys E1200 Router not saving Port Forwarding changes.
    I have tried:
    -Restarting the Modem
    -Restarting the browser
    -Restarting the computer
-Tried to Port Forward through both the Single and Ranged Port Forwarding

Hi there. You can try another browser or a different computer. If it is the same thing, upgrade the firmware of the router. You can refer to this link on how to http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=0a6881b90224439b92c8d8f19ca42e5d_21511.xml&pid=80&...

  • Is there max number of switches I can connect to Linksys SD2008? Slow down issues...

I have a SD2008 main 8-port switch.  Connected to this, I have THREE 5-port switches from DLINK, each on its own SD2008 port.
    1) My DSL provides 10 Mbps maximum.
    2) On two of the DLINK switches, I can get 10 Mbps with speedtest.net
    3) On third switch (connected last in time), I can only get about 2 Mbps.
    4) If I disconnect one of the other two switches, the 3rd slow one now is 10 Mbps.
It seems like there can only be 2 switches connected to the SD2008.  Is this true?
If so - is there a new model of switch that I can connect 3 switches to (two 5 ports and one 8 port).

  • My external hard drives seem to slow down my iMac

    Hello,
I've encountered an odd situation in that the external hard drives I use to hold all of my files seem to slow down the performance of my iMac. I have two Lacie 1 tb externals plugged into my 2006 2.0 Ghz iMac with 2 gig of ram. I've had these two externals for about two months and for the same amount of time, any other item (ipod, card reader, thumb drive) I'd plug in would take several min to mount onto my computer. From there, the data transfer from my external or internal hard drive is slightly delayed and slower as well.
I unmounted these externals today and plugged in a thumb drive to test and it immediately mounted to my computer! I never thought an external could effect the mounting of other, smaller, externals!
I'm just wondering if there's anything I can do to fix this problem? My itunes music files are stored on my externals and I'm a photographer, so I'd need regular access to my externals to get to my pictures.
Thanks for all your help. I can usually find the answer to my problem by browsing around in discussions, but I find this situation to be a bit of a unique one!

    kromedomio wrote:
Sorry, It's connected to my iMac via Firewire 400. I have the externals connected to each other via Firewire 800.
In regards to types of files, I have my itunes library, photo (Raw Canon 50d files), Adobe (photoshop, indesign, illustrator) and Word files all on the external. I basically moved everything off my internal and store it all on my external now, so I'm accessing it a lot through the day.
I'm wondering just why you did that. Surely you know that F/W 400 is much slower than your internal HD?
I'd be inclined to move things that involve heavy I/O during editing (photos and videos, especially) back to the internal. I suspect you'll see a large improvement.

  • LAN IP keeps changing on my wireless internet camera using Linksys E1200 router

Although it was working fine for about a month the LAN IP for my wireless internet camera now keeps changing almost on a daily basis for no apparent reason.   I am currently away from home and am unable to access the camera for live coverage until I determine and reset the IP.   Fortunately the camera is working and still sending emails on motion detection which includes a note with the IP which I then can use remotely access my local computer and then to the camera for live coverage but this is a time consuming method.    To be able to get access from my current location I then have to remotely log on to my home E1200 router and change the address in the port forwarding section of the routers setup program in order to use the new IP directly.
I know I could have avoided this problem by seting up the camera with a static IP but for some reason I had a problem doing so and due to time limitation I ended up accepting the dynamic IP assignment.
What could be causing the change and more importantly is there anything I can do to the router setup to minimize the problem?

There hasn't been a power failure at my house in over 3 weeks at least none that my UPS system has sensed but there have been many camera IP changes during that perioid .    Perhaps there has been some local power interuption to the camera or the router.   I wonder if a local power sag or surge might be sufficient for the camera to restart.   I guess further investigation will have to wait til I return and regardless of what I find I'll switch to a static IP for the futrue.

  • Kernel_task slowing down my iMac!

I have noticed that more often my iMac is slowing down with me seeing the spinning beach ball every time.  Pulling up Activity Monitor I see that every time a process called kernel_task is using up between 50% to 80% of my CPU.  Then it will drop off suddenly...and go back down to 1.4 % or lower.  I deliberatly kept Activity Monitor open so I could observe this.  I unplugged all of my peripherals and externals and restarted my iMac.  The problem persisted.  It doesn't seem to be linked to any specific third-party application, I saw that iStat Menus and PopCharX were showing up in Console a LOT so I uninstalled them - but the problem persists.  It is getting very annoying!  More often than not I notice it when I try to use Quick Look, but it also can occur when trying to select the Application list in the Finder, when trying to load a web page in Safari, and at other random times.  I know that kernel_task is a kind of "catch-all" for some system processes, but Apple engineers REALLY need to address this issue.  After reading the threads on the site here I see this has been a problem going as far back as 2005!  It has been blamed on everything from temperature to graphics issues.  Everyone has a solution, not all of them work.
Pretty frustrating!  If anyone has had a problem with this, and has a viable solution, please let me know.  If anyone knows of an application or terminal command that would allow me to at least look inside the kernel_task process to see a log that would be awesome (it would at least allow me to narrow down the cause of the slowdown).

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

  • Hello, I have iMAC 7,1, 20 inch, 4gigs of ram, Intel C2D perfectly runing OS Mavericks (10.9.5), will update to Yosemite, slow down my iMac?

    Hello, I have iMAC 7,1, 20 inch,
    4gigs of ram,
    Intel C2D
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
    HDD 320gig's
iMAC is perfectly runing OS Mavericks (10.9.5), with no lag, and no sluggish working, Multitasking is AWESOME (i have PC, with 8gigs of RAM, GeForce GTX570, etc etc), but i must say this MAC is running way better   a way way, faster and I am Loving it!!! I am using it for making music, and video editing, i am Using Final Cut Pro x, Ableton 9, Logic Pro x, and bunch of other apps and it is working perfectly, and i am so shocked how machine old like this can do that stuff better than any PC i had, and not to mention that I use more time on iMAC than on PC, i use Windows PC just for occasional gaming, but that is like 10% of time, so i use my MAC in 90% of time.
So, enough of my iMAC. I am wondering if I update it to Yosemite, will my iMac slow down, and not continue to work like on Mavericks? Will it become sluggish and unresponsive? Will it affect reliability and stability which  have on Mavericks? And will update delete my personal data (tons of Logic, Ableton and Garage band projects, and tons of Final Cut Pro projects), Applications (because I have some apps which is hard to find these days)...
I know bunch of you guys would tell me to backup my data, but i don't have External hard drive (they are pretty expensive in my Country), I have some friend who could borrow me External HDD, but they have their data on it, and they mostly use windows.. I did not use Time Machine yet, but i think probably it would format HDD on Macs partitions, so, i will do it on my own guys (don't judge me about that guys please)..
So if someone could answer me that, i will really appreciate that.
    Thank you, and best Regards!!

I recommend you upgrade your RAM to at least 8 GB for good performance with the apps you're using. Also keep a minimum of 25-30 GB of free space on your boot drive for optimal system and application performance.
The maximum RAM a 7.1 iMac can address is 6GB, the OP can keep one of the 2GB DIMMs and then add a matching 4GB DIMM. If  the OP decides to do this, please only purchase from Crucial or OWC at www.MacSales.com.
However as described on a 8 year old iMac, I'd stay with Mavericks and then when considering upgrading upgrade to a more up-to-date Mac.

  • Linksys E3000 keeps slowing down to snail speeds

Hello. I'm posting this because I'm tired of resetting my router. Every so often my e3000 will like forget its supposed to supply bandwidth. What I mean is that I pay for 7mbps down .5mbps up cable broadband and when the router is working fine I always get really close or over that. When it forgets what its supposed to be doing I get a painful .15mbps~1mbps down/up (usually under dial up tho) I check the modem and all values are running a full speed with good voltages, SNR's, and frequencies. It doesn't seem to matter if I change any values in the router after the issue starts. I need to do a reset either through the firmware "factory defaults" or the red reset button. Then everything goes back to working but I'm seriously getting tired of resetting my router every week or more. Restoring settings also causes it to go into crawl mode. This effects wifi and wired connections. Its also been upgraded to the latest firmware version from linksys. Any help on this would be great and don't be afraid to talk tech, I'm quite savvy. Thanks!

There are many reasons why you experience slow speed or connection. Well, there are few things you should keep in mind with regards to N routers:
    •    Wireless Channel
The default setting for most Linksys Gateway is either Auto or Channel 6-2.437 GHz.
QUICK TIP:  For Wireless-N Dual Band-Routers/ Gateway, it is best to use 20 MHz when in a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz populated area to avoid wireless interference.  For less crowded networks, you can use 40 MHz on a 5 GHz.  If you’re unsure, you may leave channel width at Auto.  This will automatically adjust the settings to 20 or 40 MHz, depending on which best fits your network.
If you are selecting the 5 GHz wireless network, ensure that your wireless devices and adapters have a 5 GHz capability for selectable dual-band.  Otherwise, do not change the frequency of your router.
    •    Wireless Security
It is the encryption method used to protect a wireless network from intruders.  For best wireless-N performance, encrypt your router with WPA2-AES.
After configuring your Gateway with these settings, make sure that all wireless devices are in sync with the Gateway‘s wireless configuration.  Also, place the wireless Gateway on an elevated spot and away from other devices that may cause interference.
    •     Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) is a wireless Quality of Service feature that improves quality for audio, video, and voice applications by prioritizing wireless traffic. If you have other devices on your network that support WMM then only select Enabled.
    •    Make sure the drivers for the Wireless Card for the computers should be updated as well..

  • Cisco Linksys E1200 Router says ethernet cord is not connected

    Hello,
I first had issues when there was a large thunderstorm that passed through the area. Lightning struck in my complex, and caused a large powersurge to go through my building. My router is plugged into a surge protector so I figured that it would be okay. The internet was out for a few days, and I only realized it came back when I plugged the ethernet cable directly into my laptop.
I have tried unplugging the router and waiting for a few minutes, then plugging it back into the power sources, then plugging the ethernet cable back in. To no avail, the internet is still unavailable to me wirelessly. I have tried different ethernet cords with no success. I reset the device to factory settings and have tried to set it back up with the CD and still no success; it does not recognize that the ethernet cord is plugged in.
I've had this router for about 2 years now and never had any problems till now. What can I do to fix it, if anything? Or do I need to just get a new one? Thank you!

Power surge blew the Internet Port on the router. In this senario the power surge came in via the ethernet internet connection as well. You will have to replace the router.

  • It seems like my ethernet transfer is slow

I have a macbook and a g5 2.3 hooked up via ethernet. everything works right but i remember being really impressed with the data transfer rate at first. Now not so much. it takes about 6 minutes to transfer 4.5GB. when i transfer the same 4.5GB to an external fw400 drive it takes half the time. what gives?

so if i manually set the speed i would choose 1000 and set duplex to full.
    is that right?
i have it all worked out so that the g5 uses the internet connect from macbook and everything works so well i want to make sure i dont mess up anything by manually setting up ethernet.
    thanks
there is no router in place. really? FW is faster than ethernet? i just remember the ethernet being absolutely blazing at onepoint!

My iMac and Macbook were operating well until the Yosemite 10.10.2 update. Now, the wheel spins when I try to scroll down on pages, or when I try to move from screen to screen. Programs freeze up more often, needing to be forced to quit, or just crash altogether. Safari has been particularly affected. Both computers are only 6 months old. I close all other programs and Safari tabs, but this does not help.
