Seems Safari should be re-installed?

Safari has been behaving strangely - it absolutely REFUSES to keep me logged into websites which allow you to stay logged in after Safari shuts down, such as YahooMail or Gmail. It remembers my password but when I return after quiting Safari I'm once again prompted to log in. I've gone through all the settings, tried re-installing Pacifist, and even done things like Repair Disk Permissions.
Possible related to this, my DVD drive has been behaving strangely and not playing certain discs which otherwise play fine on other systems. Beyond that, programs like Handbrake can't rip those same discs, which means something's going on strange with the drive - right?
Any ideas on either of these and if they're somehow related?
thanks!

You need to let go of the mindset that re-installing an application will somehow fix things. Re-installing doesn't help 99.99% of the time. Applications like Safari are dependent on numerous other files for proper operation. Re-installing the application does not replace or reset any of the other files necessary for proper operation. Files that keep track of things like cookies, preferences, history, browser cache, etc. are not replaced or reset by re-installing. In your user library folder (~/Library) take a look at the Safari folder, the Cookies folder, and the Cache folder. If any of these files has become corrupted they can and will cause problems. Since you are describing an issue with web sites retaining your login information it definitely sounds like a cookies problem. Another poster has suggested a possible fix for that issue.
As for the DVD drive acting up it's not likely that your issues are related. Have you tried simply cleaning the read/write head of the DVD drive? Any consumer electronics store will have a cleaning disc available for a couple of dollars. Try the simple stuff first.
Finally have you run Disk Utility to make sure your hard drive is free of problems? Have you used Disk Utility to verify permissions are set correctly? Any corruption of files on your hard drive can and often do cause all sorts of weird problems. Same goes for permissions.

  • Today Apple retail unit sold me Airport Time Capsule. Now trying to install on my Mac which runs OSX10.6.8. Seems I should have newer OSX and Airport Utility version. What can I do please?

Today Apple retail unit/shop in sold me Airport Time Capsule. Now trying to install on my 21 inch iMac which runs OSX10.6.8. Seems I should have newer OSX and also newer Airport Utility version (mine is 5.6.1). What can I do, please? So much looking forward to using Time Capsule. It is not at all readable on box. Now with a magnified glass I can just about make out the installation requirements printed in tiny print at the bottom/base of the box! I have tried software update etc etc and to download Airport Utility update from Apple website. This was unsuccessful because of OSX, I gathered. Appreciate any similar experience and how it was resolved. Thank you. Tr

You need OS X 10.7.5 or later. Most likely you can upgrade OS X on your iMac. You already have 10.6.8 and access to the App Store. If your computer qualifies to run Mavericks, then that is what you would upgrade to, otherwise, you would upgrade to Lion.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • Safari "can't be installed on this disk"

When I try to install Safari, at the "Select a Destination" step it says: "Safari can't be installed on this disk. This update requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or newer". I installed Snow Leopard last night. The old Safari browser couldn't be opened at all; I have since disposed of it in the trash...I have plenty of GB's of storage space available...any ideas of how to fix this would be appreciated!

Seems there could be many causes, check out this thread, it may help:

  • Should I bother installing 2.0.1?

I see a lot of people having problems after installing the 2.0.1 update so my question is should I even install it or just wait for the next update? Is Apple fixing the problem or is there even really a problem with the update at all?
    Thanks

May seem a lot of people, but the iphone is sold in more than 21 countries. Last October 2007, 1.4 million iPhones sold and at least a million 3G iphones sold since launch and still counting.
There was 10 million downloads of version 2 software, yet how many people have you seen complain about 2.0.1, a teeny, weeny tiny trace in comparison and no doubt by the far majority have downloaded the update.

    Hi there,
Firstly, try a hard reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until the Apple logo appears.
If this doesn't work, try restoring your device. Put it in recovery mode if iTunes doesn't recognise it, and restore it from there. I have linked to instructions below.

Let me know if this helps,

    Welcome to the Apple community.
AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.

The message is upon installation...it says the above, the publisher of firefox 6.0.2.exe couldn't be verified. Should I still install?

    Hi cleopt,
You may see that message below the Google search box on www.google.com/firefox which is the old Firefox default home page. That page is no longer being maintained by Google.
You should try changing your home page to:

If you don't know how to change the home page, you should take a look at the Knowledge Base article [[How to set the home page]].
