Seems to be a common recent iTunes problem

In searching the forum, I've found a few people experiencing this problem, but no solutions...perhaps someone has come across a solution?
Yesterday, iTunes informed me that my Library file was damaged, saved it under a different name and opened a new, blank Library file. What's more, quitting iTunes and restarting iTunes replicated this behavior: the new, blank Library file was found to be "damaged", it was saved again under a different name and yet another Library file was created. And so on.
Further, I found I could not re-import my music.
Here is some data about my Mac:
iMac G5
1GB RAM
OS X 10.4.11
iTunes 7.6.2
Quicktime 7.4.5
My iTunes music and video files are stored on an external firewire hard drive. Here is a history of what I've tried since I discovered this issue:
--Tried re-importing the music from its current location
--Backed up music to a redundant external drive (not enough room to do so on my primary hard drive), tried re-importing the music from that location
--Saw that the original location needed disk repair; wiped it clean and moved the music back and tried to re-import.
--Reset iTunes to look for its library in the default location on my internal HDD, copied a sample of my music there and tried to import it.
--Deleted the iTunes prefs file.
--Created a brand new user account and tried to start a new library (in the default location) using a sample of my music.
None of these things worked. None would allow me to import my existing music, though only in the original environment did I get the "Damaged Library file" error. All the music was originally imported by iTunes and was living fine in iTunes; I attempted importing by drag-and-drop and via the menu command to Import; and all the music was either ripped from CDs I owned or else was purchased at the iTunes Store, there was no other DRM.
I feel I should delete the iTunes application and re-install it, but I wanted to make sure that there were no untoward risks with doing that: iTunes is an important application as a link between all my data and my iPhone. Has anyone had any success dealing with this issue?

OK, I've come home, I've deleted iTunes and reinstalled it.
I still cannot import any songs.
But I have some new data here: it's evidently only the songs that USED to be in my iTunes library that are no longer importable. In fact, iTunes looks as though it thinks they don't exist. I had a quicktime movie sitting here that I didn't have in iTunes, and it imported fine. Anything I had, though, that was in the library when whatever happened... can't import. Won't play in iTunes if I double-click it. Won't play in Safari.
"Get Info" says they are just fine: MP3 files. But clearly, SOMETHING has happened to them. I'm about to pull my hair out over this.
In theory I should be able to redownload all my purchases from the iTunes Store...BUT for months now (ever since I upgraded to iTunes 7.6.2) I've been unable to contact the Store: every time I try, I get "the server is busy". This is true ONLY FOR THIS COMPUTER...my laptop, using the same network connection, can download everything fine.

    Hi
I've recently experiencing problems with iTunes.
It randomly stops playback for a few seconds and then resumes becoming quite annoying, is there any reason why. Running windows 8.1 on a dell XPS.

Uninstalling or reinstalling iTunes should have no adverse effect on the library, but you should backup anyway.

My computer failed and the main drive had to be formatted but all my music was on a separate internal hard drive. So I downloaded the latest iTunes , problem is it has found all my songs but seems to not recognize half of the album data, half of the artists, all of the dates and all ratings data.
I had a large part of it backed up on DVD's but it does not want to recognise them either?
    Any tips?

but cannot do this because I cannot access Mac App Store
If you can't access the App Store from the Apple menu, Dock, or Applications folder installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will reinstall the App Store for you.
It's ok to do this even you are already running v10.6.8.

FYI:  Some third party software can cause issues with the App Store >   Mac App Store: Sign in sheet does not appear, or does not accept typed text

And. . . your question is?

  • With Windows Vista, the most recent Itunes update 1/30/2014 has caused Itunes not to work, with a Mscvr80.dll not found error. Uninstalled all Apple programs, and installed fresh Itunes. Same problem. Tried to reinstall using an older install exe nogo

Recent ITunes update has caused ITunes not to work. Tried uninstalling all Apple products and reinstalling fresh. Still doesn't work. Tried reinstalling from an old install.exe. Install went nicely but program won't start as it says it can't open the library file.

Now that I have no way of accessing any of the products I have purchased from ITunes, I will most certainly never use ITunes again for any reason. Why throw good money after bad?  I will use another MP3 player that is not as cumbersome or proprietary.
    Lesson learned.

I have had similar issues with mine, happens mainly if I transfer songs and then decide to disconnect my iPod to listen to them with my IEMs (I use Interenet Explorer in my case and it is not neccessarely up when this happens, so I seriously doubt it is an issue conencted to the web browser). I have no patience for this so my trick is I try to eject it from iTunes, if that does not work, then I bring Windows explorer up, right mouse click on the iPod mounted drive and select Eject. It gives me the same warning but there is a third button selection called Continue. When I choose that it just disconnets the drive anyway and the iPod is finally disconnected. It seems to work each and every time I do it so this solution is fine for me. Would be intersting to see what the real root cause of this is because I started getting this problem with the newer iTunes 11.

  • Is it common for iTunes Radio to disconnect often?

I listen to the radio on iTunes quite a bit. In particular, CINEMIX.
But it disconnects/cuts out often and I have to press play again.
I contacted my ISP who gave the usual "try a different router, microfilter, cable and plug in master socket" routine before doing a test. I hate that. Well it so happens I needed a new router anyway, so I do now have a new system, complete new router, microfilter and cables. But I still get the issue. I dont notice my computer going offline on the internet at all, unless its extremely quick to disconnect and come back.
So I wondered if its common for iTuns Radio to be disconnecting, rather than my internet?
    Thanks

Hi.  I bought a new iphone 5 four days ago and was horrified that it discharged in less than a day with one phone call and a bit of facebook browsing.  I then read up all the info and tips on the web.  I turned off everything that wasn't necessary - mainly in location services, turned e-mails to fetch and not push. Also turned off i cloud so it will only back up when I tell it to.  Battery still drained very quickly.  I then plugged into itunes and did a whole restore (always had to do this previously for any software update before icloud!).  That was yesterday morning at about ten o'clock.  Phone was then at 100 percent.  Have used it yesterday quite a bit, didn't charge it overnight and it is now at 63% so I think that has solved the problem.  One other thing I noticed was that the shop set the default e-mail to I cloud and I always had the default set to my main e-mail account.  On completely restoring it has now put the default e-mail to mine.  Don't know if there is any connection or not.  All I can say is that the complete restore seems to have solved the problem.  Hope it works!

After a recent iTunes update attempt iTunes no longer functions and the airport extreme base station is not accessable on our computer.  We still have wifi but cannot access the base station software.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the response. I tried that approach this evening and it didn't work for me. (Technically it worked for me, when I was hardwired into my base station, but would not work for me wirelessly, which is my main issue.)
Again, using the approach you recommended works only if I have my ethernet cable attached to the LAN port so my computer is communicating directly to the base station through the hard wire. I am able to scan for my base station and make setting adjustments normally this way too.
As soon as I disconnect from the LAN port and try to go wireless is where I run into problems. The Base Station's wireless network I created is available to choose in the top right corner of the monitor with all of the other available wireless devices/networks -- but the network I created does not have access to the internet. I am also unable to configure my Base Station wirelessly. When my Airport Utility tries to scan for the Base Station and Network, it cannot find any Apple Wireless Device. It's like the Wireless Network in my base station is not sending out a signal.
Is there a way to resolve this issue?

  • Itunes problem with windows Vista

ok i bought my touchsmart tx2 1025 with windows vista ultimate 64 bit and well i ve noticed that ..well since this is my third time i exchange this computer and i noticed there was a problem with the speakers when i was playing music that anytime during a song i would get this distorted sound like when u put a lot of volume in ipod headphones that it sounds like a crack. Well that happened in my computer even with low volumes.
However I played two times the same song on itunes and two times on windows media player.
Every single time on itunes the sound came as if the speakers were about to blow... like a crack..
Every single time on Windows media player it never sounded like that.
So i am pretty sure its an itunes problem. Does anyone know how to fix this.. i would rather use itunes than windows media player but i really hate the sound it makes sometimes because it shows about 2 to 3 times during one song.

It's possible that the song your playing does indeed have a little audio distortion in it, some media players are capable of filtering it out in a silent way, others play a beep, hence with one song I have, if i play it in windows media player it goes on and then for a split second theres a beep, iTunes doesent seem to do it, so instead of filtering out the missing data, it plays it.
This is more likley a problem with the song than iTunes

  • Quicktime 10 not playing RECENT iTunes m4v files

    Hello All,
I purchase a lot of movies and TV from iTunes. I always watch them with Quicktime.
After upgrading to iTunes 10.1 on my Mac Pro Nov 17, Quicktime 10 stopped playing RECENT iTunes purchases. No movies downloaded since mid September will play. There is no audio; the window is black; play mode lasts a couple of seconds and then stops. Older ones play normally.
Anyone able to confirm this on your systems?
    Big thanks, Brett

    Hi.
I have the same problem. After several e-mails back and forth between me and iTunes Store Support I'm still where I started out with this problem. I was asked to reinstall iTunes as well, and I did. No change at all.
I have the latest iTunes and Quicktime installed. I like to save the video files like movies, tv show episodes and digital copies on my external hard drive and delete some of them from my itunes/mac to free up some space. I just play the files from my hard drive on Quicktime, so I won't have to import them into iTunes again.
However, I've noticed that any video file downloaded from iTunes after November 1st won't play in Quicktime. The tv show episodes I downloaded prior to Nov 1st play just fine, but if they were downloaded after Nov 1st, no matter what date they were originally released on, as long as I downloaded them after Nov 1st 2010, they won't play in Quicktime. Black screen, no sound.
This is really annoying as I buy lots of Blu-ray movies, and some of them comes with Digital Copies. I have several season passes too, and the latest episodes won't open in Quicktime either. I've tried everything I can think of, everything the people working with iTunes Store Support told me to do and still nothing.
If anyone finds a way to fix this, please let me know. I would be very grateful for any help fixing this problem.
I'm kinda glad I'm not the only person with this problem. That proves there's something wrong with iTunes, the OS, Quicktime or something else, probably Apple related. On the other side, I'm sorry you guys are having this really annoying problem too.
    Sincerely,
    gleek2009
edit: Btw, I just wanted to say that all those video files purchased/downloaded after Nov 1st still play fine in iTunes, just not in Quicktime. If that makes any difference.

  • ITunes problem in Leopard

I have installed Leopard 10.5.1 and apart from some annoying Keychain issues I seem to have lost my entire iTunes library. Any ideas?

I had the same problem and it was solved by this same forum. Move your *iTunes Library* from your iTunes folder in your Music PLACES and restart iTunes. After iTunes creates a new *iTunes Library*, drag and drop the iTunes music folder over your iTunes program icon. That should move all your music back including the album art. I had to re-establish ownership but all my music and album art is back and working fine.

Then you either have a network problem or a hardware problem or a corrupted hard drive. You might try:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
You can also try downloading from another computer on a different network connection.
