  • Apple Puts Legacy Final Cut Studio Back on Sale

    http://www.macrumors.com/2011/09/01/apple-puts-legacy-final-cut-pro-studio-back- on-sale/

IMHO, this whole debacle was the result of political maneuvering by a pack of arrogant but inexperienced marketing types who've become enchanted with (what they see as) their successes in the "iToy" arena where there is little precedent and virtually no competition for their products. Jake and Elwood could have marketed those products with the same results...
Thank goodness there are still a few Computer Professionals left at Apple who understand how  they arrived at this point in their history: solid products and great customer support. I suspect that a couple of them pointed out that while swell new products might bring new customers, keeping existing customers (in this case, some 2 million FCP users) would be critical to long-term stability.
I saw the same kind of idiocy at Intel back in the Glory Days (late 70s - early 80s) when some divisions were virtually unopposed in the marketplace and the trend of the day was to hire MBAs, frequently with no technical expertise.  I expect that a whole lot of business school profs are taking notes on this one...

  • New imac with FInal cut studio?

    Hi everyone,
I am looking at getting one of the new imacs for video editing (Final cut studio 2). The specs for final cut are 4 gig of ram (for some applications in the bundle).
I wanted to know, do I have to buy my ram from apple when I buy my mac, or can i upgrade it myself? And if so, would the imac be upto the job? From what I can see there isn't much difference between the new imac and the macbook pro (which is what I was going to get).
Also, what if the difference in (laymans terms, please) in the intel duo and the intel duo extreme? Is it a big difference for editing, or not worth the extra money?
Also (apologies for all the questions, i have no where else to get the answers) - can you attatch another display - such as a monitor or laptop to the new macs for editing?
    Thanks.
    Lawrence

as with all iMac and Macbook computers, there is a complete lack of expansion capabilities beyond a single firewire bus.
most potential buyers rationlize their purchasing of a lessor machine based upon length of project, type of video, hoping to get by, pick your poison. this is short-sighted as it's irrelevant. video, no matter which flavor, is processor intensive.
what else will you do with your computer? will you hook up a printer, a scanner, external harddrives, a card reader, a tape machine, perhaps rs422 control? how will you monitor hdv properly? how will you monitor audio? will you wander into surround sound mixing?
the iMac is a great computer but beware, just because others have used it successfully doesn't mean it's the shoe that will fit your foot the best. as i said, the iMac is woefully inadequate for any sort of expansion beyond a single firewire bus.
    buyer beware.

  • New user to Final Cut Studio 2

I am using Final Cut Studio 2 for the first time and I am having a hard time loading video files. I have several quicktime files which won't open in Final Cut and some video I recorded on a camcorder using mini DV tapes which I am also unsure how to import. I cannot figure out what the format of the DV is. As you can tell, I know pretty much nothing about video.... stuff.... I've read the manual for Final Cut (first volume) and my camcorder and neither were helpful for this basic stuff. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi
Tom got some important questions on Your set-up
    I got his (Tom Wolskys)

as birthday present. This was of enourmos help and a joy to go trough.
    • my miniDV tape Camera - only connects via a FireWire Cable (USB=NO NO)

  • New Imac for Final Cut Studio

Upgrading from my 24" Imac to a refurbished 27". I'm just getting started with FCS, will this one be sufficient
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/FB953LL/A?mco=MTU3ODcyNDE
Or will I need to upgrade to this one "really cant right now due to cost" http://store.apple.com/us/product/FC511LL/A?mco=MTkwMzU2Njc

You'll have to transcode the Vixia to ProRes LT, which isn't too processor-intensive, so do you need the pricier model? No.
That said, would I pay an extra $200 for a faster processor and graphics card with twice the VRAM? Yes, I would.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and New Macbooks with Nvidia graphics

Do the new Macbooks announced today (10/14/2008) meet the minimum system requirements for running Final Cut Studio 2?

Lecturing? Really? Not hardly, but I'll answer your query as succinctly as possible.
Will the new Macbook run Final Cut Studio 2? I will wager that FCP will operate, DVD SP will operate and Soundtrack Pro will operate. I highly doubt Color will operate and am not sure about Motion due to the graphics card.
That should answer your question. To "lecture" some more, where will you have media stored and how will you get media, any sort of media into these applications?
As far as graphics and video are concerned, that distinction has been met above. I'm sure the Macbook will operate Photoshop with no problem.
But again, why not check the minimum tech specs for yourself?

  • General Overview on How to use Final Cut Studio to create a Blu-Ray DVD

I am a new user of Final Cut Studio and need an experienced user to give my a progression guide on how to create a Blu-Ray DVD of my recent Alaska Trip. Last month I spend 8 days in Alaska visiting Denali and Juneau primarily. During that time I took about 100 short video clips (HD 1080p) and 570+ still photos with my Canon 7D. I have experimented with some pieces of the software and have created a Blu-Ray disk using Final Cut Pro and Compressor. However my goal is to create this DVD with menus that will play short clips (some narrated) and still photos(also some narration). I did a short one in DVD Studio Pro this morning but need some general guidance on what progression and programs to use to create this project. I was not able to take my video from the Studio Pro Sequence I created for my 1st DVD I had to take the original clips which were processed using Apple ProRes 422 and copy them in one at a time and then find the audio (on the voice overs) I created and also place them into DVD Studio Pro one at a time. I obviously need some guidance on the proper progression.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Here's the situation...
DVD Studio Pro will not do the trick for you - it doesn't do blu-ray discs. If you want to do Blu-ray you've got to use either Final Cut Pro's "Export" command or Compressor's "Burn Blu-ray disc" template. The downside to both of these approaches is that you can't burn more than one title (or movie, etc.) using Final Cut Studio.
To do what you want to do, you need Toast (at least). Toast will auto-generate menus but will let you put more than one title per slide (so you can put multiple slideshows on the same disc).
If you want to do full-on customizing of menus and multi-level menus, for that you need Adobe's Encore.
My suggestion - Get Toast. Encore is close to $800.
Here's your progression (at least the one I use).
Edit in Final Cut Pro (ProRes 422 is fine, ProRes 422 LT would do the trick as well)
Export as QuickTime movies (original settings)
In Compressor using the H.264 for Blu-ray setting and Dolby Digital setting and create elementary streams for video (.264 file) and audio (.ac3). Make sure these files have identical names except for the extension.
Using toast, add the video file to the Toast project and it'll find the audio file.
    Burn away!

  • Final Cut Studio 2 installation hangs under Snow Leopard

I've since seen this on two machines and have filed a bug with Apple, but wanted to post to give people a heads up.
When attempting a new installation of Final Cut Studio 2 on a MacBook Pro running Mac OS X 10.6, the install hung with "about a minute remaining."
Examination of the running processes using "top" showed one thread spinning in user space using 100% of the CPU:
    <pre>/Volumes/Final Cut Studio/Installer/Packages/QuickTimeMPEG2Pro.pkg/Contents/Resources/ConfigureMim eTypes -rescan -verbose</pre>
Running the same thread by hand succeeded immediately, so manually killing the spinning process seemed to have no ill effects and allowed the installation to proceed as expected.
Just to be safe I manuallly ran
    <pre>/Volumes/Final Cut Studio/Installer/Packages/QuickTimeMPEG2Pro.pkg/Contents/Resources/ConfigureMim eTypes -rescan -verbose</pre>
again after disc 1 was finished installing but (obviously) while disc 1 was still in the drive.

    Hello,
I fortunately came across this discussion. I want to install FCS2 on my iMac which is now running under Snow Leopard and I also got stuck at "about a minute" remaining time.
But it seems that the answer to solve this is give in an answer William has given. The only thing is, I don't get it what to do.
I typed in the word Top in Terminal I saw that it is indeed "hanging" on ConfigureMimeTypes. Through "show contents" I got to the ConfigureMimeTypes file (at least I think that is what I should do). But then...?
Another thought was, that I had to install the QuickTimeMpeg2Pro.Pkg. So I have tried that also. But then the same happens, it got stuck at "the remaining one minute issue".
Can someone please tell me what to do?
Please consider the fact that I'm not a very technical person and that english is not my native language.
    Thanks a lot.
    Kind regards,
    Richard

  • HELLO! Final Cut studio 2 introduces soundtrack 2 "surround space deisgner"

I noticed the new release of Final Cut Studio 2, of which forms sountrack pro 2. Lots of nice new audio features, but more importantly (for me at least) i like the look of "real surround busses" and space deigner in full fat surround! - http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/soundtrackpro/sound.html
It says "5.1 surround" but im hoping it's 7.1 as everything i have been doing for the last 18 months has been 7.1. I just tried to buy the update from FC to FC2 from the apple store, but alas it's not in the uk apple store yet. Hopefuly it will be in the morning.
Certainly gives me a really good feeling that we logic users could be in for a treat if these new au plugs make it to a future logic!

Install the applications on the system drive. You will be given the option to choose where you would like to install all the "extras" loops etc for soundtrack, motion etc. SO you can put them all on another internal drive or even an external FW drive. I believe the applications only require 4 or 5 gigs of space.

  • Is it possible to install Final Cut Studio 2 with a MacBook 2.1 GHz 13.3in?

I just purchased a new MacBook and Final Cut Studio, but my computer won't let me install FCP 6. I think it is a graphics card problem. Is there something I can purchase or download to make it compatible, or do I need to replace computer or use an older version of FCP?
    Thanks
    Tara

    Hi Tara,
    welcome to the forums,
I beleive your MacBook comes with an integrated graphics processor.
Unfortunately FCP requires a separate graphics card see minimum specs in the link below:
    http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs.html
Perhaps you can replace your MB with a MBPro as the latter is perfect for FCP6.
    Best,
    G.

  • Final Cut Studio 3 on a 2010 Mac Mini?

Hi, I've searched the web high and low and can't find an answer to my question. Can the new Mac Mini dual 2.4 run Final Cut Studio 3? My main concern is the graphics card which SHARES 256mb ddr3 sdram. The Final Cut Studio 3 page says the hardware should be at least 128MB Vram. Is the shared 256MB SDram seen as "V"ram by Final Cut Studio?
If I'm reading the specs right the only thing the Mac Mini can't do is 4k & DPX rendering which requires 512MB Vram in Color (and I'm sure other intensive tasks would crawl).
Of course we would all like a Mac Pro, but my budget is tight.
Thank you so much for any feed back.

What do you mean by "Forget Color, forget Motion. There is no way to properly monitor what you are doing.
COLOR: I mean that to properly use COLOR you need a separate capture or video input/output device. One designed for video. Color will not send out a video signal via the HDMI port. That is, in essence, just another video out option...a video signal, via an HDMI port. So that you can connect the mini to an HDTV. But, it will mirror the desktop, send out an RGB signal, not a proper YUV video signal. For Color, you need proper monitoring. But you don't need to use Color...just saying.
and extended desktop is possible across the two for dual monitors, correct?
Yes, dual COMPUTER DISPLAYS...not proper video monitoring.
    Color only requires 1680x1050)
For workspace...to use the interface. But to get a proper video signal you need a professional IO device. None works with the Mini. Well, there is the AJA IOHD, but that doesn't work with Color (firewire issue).
MOTION: Well, it might work. I just know that on the Mini I have it is a dog to work with. So I skip it. Let the kids edit on the BIG TV...they have fun with that.

  • Slow Rendering Time After Installing Final Cut Studio 2 Upgrade

I have a Mac Pro with two dual core processors, 8 GB of Ram, and 1 Terabyte of storage. I'm running the latest version of OSX. Ever since I upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2 my rendering time in Final Cut Pro 6 has become painfully slow. For example, it now takes at least an hour to render a short 5 minute video project. A project that size used to take just a few minutes. I uninstalled Final Cut Studio using AppZapper because I couldn't figure out how to remove the program any other way. Then, I reinstalled Final Cut Pro 6, but it didn't fix the problem. I called Apple's Final Cut Studio tech support, but they just had me upgrade Final Cut Pro 6 to 6.0.1. Unfortunately, this didn't fix the problem. Everything worked fine with Final Cut Pro 5, but ever since we upgraded everything has fell apart. Can anyone give us any insight into fixing this problem? So far, Apple's Final Cut tech support has been unable to find a solution.

Just a couple things to double check.
    1. Repair Disk permissions, RESTART.
    2. Try setting your RENDER DRIVE to something Different than the Media drive, RESTART.
    3. Try Hosting your Media on a new Drive, RESTART.
Also, at this point since you are having system problems, I would backup all of your Media, Projects, etc. I just read a post of someone else that didn't have backup of their project and it became corrupted. I use Lacies SilverKeeper to automatically backup about 20 times a day, so we have dupes of at least all our Projects. And the first thing I do every morning is start the system up, repair disk permissions, and RESTART.
The reason why I suggest restarting after each attempt at changing preferences and such is so that the next time you load FCP it loads the settings that you have saved/changed as native settings as opposed to changed settings, this does make a difference. You will know what I am talking about if you have experienced the Log & Capture Input problem for FCP 5.
Let me know, I have some other suggestions if these don't work.

  • Universal Final Cut Studio

If I am buying a brand new version of Final Cut Studio for my MacBook, msut I also buy the upgrade to make it Universal or will that be included. Thanks,
    Ben

That's a great question. We seem to be in a 'tweener period of time at the moment. The FCSU version won't start shipping for a week or two or so, but the MacBook Pro is shipping now.
Call Apple Sales and ask. On Monday morning, of course.

  • How many computers can I install Final Cut Studio 2 on?

Here's my dilemma. I'm a poor soon-to-be college grad with an old 2004 PowerBook G4. I'm starting to do video projects this summer and want to get a new computer and Final Cut Studio 2. The problem is, I don't have money for both. However, my current computer DOES meet the requirements (1GB RAM, 1.5Ghz engine, and 17" monitor) to install the apps and run them. So, ideally, I would buy Final Cut Studio 2 and install it on this old computer until I saved up enough money to get myself a Mac Book Pro in a few months. Then, I would install FCS 2 on my new computer. Is this possible? Can I install FCS 2 on my old G4 and then months later when I get a new computer, on my new computer? Or at least transfer the apps to my new computer?
Thanks ahead of time! I haven't gone computer shopping in a while so I don't remember how this all works!

Install it on the PowerBook, and when you get the MacBook Pro, download and use this tool on the PowerBook prior to installing it on the MacBook Pro. The license for Final Cut Studio 2 permits it to be installed on a desktop and portable but not two portables.
If you're in the middle of a project when you get the MacBook Pro, complete it before changing the configuration.
