Select a border

i try to do a very simple thing i choose a cell an will select a border style. for example a dotted line only at the bottom of the cell. i tried it with the toolbar symbol and also via the information window tools. in bouth ways i am not abel to select just the bottom line of the cell. is this a bug, ore does it work so different in numbers comparing to excel? thanks in advance!

it's always the user i could figure it out by my self and it's embarrassing because it's so simple
in excel the handling is different and to change some old habits are not easy...;)

Get rid of initial table selection (orange border)

Hi,
I have a table with multi-selection, and when i initialize the screen automatically the first line of the table looks like it's selected (orange border), that's confusing the users because this file is not really selected. Is there a possibility to get rid of this orange border on the first line?

Select List border color ?

Doesnt seem like you can change either the border color or the style of the "arrow" on the select list

Select Modify Border always feathers

Hi All,
Apologies if this has already been discussed somewhere previously, but I'm getting very frustrated that I can't seem to easily accomplish what should be a very simple task:
I am using CTRL+A to "Select All" and then trying to contract the selection by X pixels. Apparently my only option after a Select All command is to use the "Border" command, but this always seems to feather the selection, no matter what I do. I know there are some "workarounds" to get the selection I want, but seriously, this is so dead simple of a task I'm going bonkers here.
Is it just me or did this used to be a lot easier in earlier versions of PS? Seems to me that in CS5 Adobe is trying to get "fancy" with their UI and making things a lot harder than they need to be.
Could someone from Adobe let me/us know why the UI is making it impossible for me to do a simple Select > Modify > Contract command (following a Select All)? I distinctly remember being able to do this without hassle in every other version of PS I've ever worked with.

It's not just you. It's pretty easy in CS3.
The screenshot is after Ctrl+A has been applied. The Contract command is still active. And the selection will not be feathered.
According to MTSTUNER's link (thank you), CS3 is the only version that will do this. Sometimes it's good to be behind the curve.
Maybe the referenced script will fix you up. I don't know anything about scripts, but I do know a little about actions. So out of curiousity, I hacked together an action which should work in CS5. It's based on expanding the canvas, contracting the selection, then cropping back to the original size. It looks like a long way to go to accomplish something so simple, but Ps does it all in the blink of an eye.
1. Merge Visible (Ctl+Alt+Shft). This creates a proxy for the original image size after the canvas is enlarged. This layer will be deleted at the end of the action.
2. Canvas Size. I set it to 105% in both axis. The percentage doesn't matter, as long as it's more than 100. The point it to get the canvas border away from the proxy border.
3. Set Selection. Ctl +Click on the thumbnail on the proxy layer. This will select the perimeter of the proxy layer, which is the same as the original canvas.
4. Contract. Menu>Select>Modify>Contract. Enter the number of pixels. This can be changed later. As you can see in the screen shot above, I have made this a conditional action. It will stop here for you to approve or change the settings. When you hit enter, the action continues.
5. Layer Via Copy. This layer preserves the contracted selection. It's really being used as a channel. This layer will also be deleted at the end of the action.
6. Set Selection. Ctl+Click on the thumbnail for the Merge Visible layer from step 1.
7. Crop. Menu>Image>Crop. The image is now the original size.
8. Set Selection. Ctl+Click on the layer thumbnail created in step 5. You should now be looking at the contracted selection. We're done, except for a little housecleaning below.
9. Delete. Delete the top layer, which should be the contracted channel. (This doesn't affect the selection.)
10. Delete. Delete the top layer, which should be the Stamp Visible layer. Now we're back where we started, but we have a contracted selection.
Stop Recording.
It may look ridiculous on paper, but it works like a charm, so far as I've tested it. And the beauty of actions is you only have to make them once. No matter how much trouble they are.
Once the action is made, it's quick and easy to use. Just click on the action button.
The contract pixel dialog box appears.
OK or change and OK, and you're done. The selection appears at the desired location, and is not feathered. In practice, the only downside is you get a few extra history states.
You get where you're going, and you get there quick. So quick no one will notice you got there via Paris, London, and El Paso.
I'm not 100% sure this will work in CS5, as I've never laid eyes on it, but the issue seems to be that when the selection touches the canvas border, Contract Selection is not available. Nowhere in the action does a selection touch the canvas border, so it should work the same as it does in my CS3. If you're interested in testing it, I can send you the Droplet, or you can create it from scratch using the instructions above.
Anyway, that's all I got, and it could all be wrong.

Annoying Selection/Focus Border

Since the upgrade to 10.5.5 as well as the Java update, I'm getting an annoying 2-3 pixel selection border appearing on various apps. Have no clue why or how to turn it off.

Border selection in V3.2

Hi hi,
Previously, in numbers '09 it was possible to select individual border, then to copy/paste style. Cannot find that In new version. Is it dissabled in v3.2?

The model for setting borders is different. You select the option, then select the borders on which to apply them:

I am facing a problem with JDK 1.4.2_01 & Windows L&F. I am unable to see the yellow border around the selected cell in JTable. Was working fine with 1.4.1_03.
A bug with id: 4674205 was reported with 1.4.0 stating :
" In the Windows Look and Feel, the selected cell in a JTree or JTable is framed with a yellow rectangle. To accurately match the real Windows UI, it should be a black and white dotted rectangle instead. (This was part of bug 4268204,which was marked fixed, but this part hasn't been fixed.) This behavior was fixed for JList, but not JTree or JTable. "
Now it has been fixed and closed.
May be they might have removed setting of yellow border for the selected cell to match with native windows UI.
But selected cell border is very much necessary for my project. Can any one please suggest me a workaround.

Thanks for your reply. It will not be feasible in my application as it already has huge number of tables with some of them already having complex renderers and editors.
I was looking at something which i can set globally so that it will reflect to all of the tables in the application in a particular L&F.
I tried setting
UIManager.getDefaults().put("Table.focusCellHighlightBorder",Color.yellow);
and
UIManager.put("Table.focusCellHighlightBorder",Color.yellow);
But no luck.
Any other inputs are most welcome.

Html:select border issue.

Hi,
I am trying to put a border on a dropdownlist. For the dropdown, I am using html:select tag. I tried giving the border using the style attribute in html:select.(<html:select style="border:1px solid red"). It does not seem to be working. Could someone help me out and guide me in the proper direction. Thanks.

Are we talking java here? Or is this javascript? If javascript, you know that this is a java forum, and that the two languages are vastly different. If you're asking about java, then sorry, but I'm at a loss to help you as I've never heard of these before.

How do you eliminate back the border width from a given selection?

Perhaps a stupid question, I dont know, but whenever I make a selection and then go to selection>modify>border to select any given width from 1 to 200px, how do you eliminate back any created width? the value 0 is not accepted, only from 1 up. Does this mean I have to deselect everything and start the whole selection back over? that would take a lot of time if my selection was a little complex and took me some time perform it!
I tried "googleing" that answer but couldnt find anyting so I am coming for help here.

It's unclear to me what you mean by "Eliminate back". Do you want just the border to extend inside the original selection?
Are you recording an action?
Keep in mind you can save any number of selections under different names via Select - Save Selection, then combine them with the Load Selection function using features like "Overlap" and "Subtract From Selection".

Is there a way to add multiple borders to a single cell with one click or do I have to add one border at a time for example, one cell with borders on three sides?

I would like to know if there is a way to add multiple borders to a single cell or selection of cells in one click. At this time, if i want to add for example a top border and a bottom border to a single cell I have to do this in two steps: first select the top border, style, thickness, and color, and then next select the bottom border, style, thickness, and color. Is there a way to select the top and bottom border of a cell in one click? Clicking on the top border then holding down the command key while selecting the bottom border does not work, nor does holding down the option key, the control key, or the shift key work. Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the suggestion but this did not work for my Mac. When a cell is selected for which I want borders, the entire cell is lit up. Then when I go to the border tool and select style, thickness, and color, the entire lit up cell takes on the border, that is the Outside Edges of the cell now have a border. So selecting the style, thickness, and color first doesn't work.
If I select the top border first (or any border), the drop down goes away and I can't select multiple borders - I get to choose one at a time. After selecting one border, style, thickness, and color, said border is now on the spreadsheet. Then I go back to the border selection and pick another border and the the previously selected style, thickness, and color reverts to null, so I start over with the new border style, thickness, and color. Yes, it is tedious.
The Fix would allow the user to select multiple borders, say left and right, before the drop down goes away after selecting only one border
Does it have something to do with Allow or Disallow border selection?

A cell will not maintain a border. When I try to select which line to use, it immediately goes back to "none", thoughts?

Border format controls may be found in the Format bar near the top of the document window (top image) and in the Table Inspector (bottom image).
Note that there are four controls in the Format bar. The Inspector splits the first one, the border selection menu, into three sets of buttons. The remaining controls are uses to set the border Style, the border Width, and the Border Colour. If you use only the first (which is what I suspect you have done), you will have Selected the border that you want to change, but haven't specified what changes you want to make.
Here are the steps to set a wide, dashed red border on a set of three cells:
Select the cells to which the border will be applied.
In the Format bar, select the bottom border, using the first pop-up menu button.
When you release the mouse button,the blue Selection rectangle showing the three selected cells (above) will be replaces by a blue Selection line showing the bottom edge of these cells in selected. No change has yet been made to the border.
Use the Style button to choose the dashed line.
Use the Stroke Thickness button to choose 2 pt.
Click the Stroke Color Well and choose a Red from the Color Palette that opens.
The selection line will change to reflect each of these choices as it is made and applied to the selected border.
Click any unselected cell on the table to deselect the cells just changed, or click away from the table to deselect the whole table and view the changes.

Cell border with categories not possible?

Several tables in my worksheet. Those without categories... I can format cell borders. Those with categories, no way. Can't select cell borders or apply line effects to a manually-selected cell border. Is there a workaround?

You are right. I also discoverd that .NET has an implementation for this. Well, I hate to resort to .NET but have no choice.

Help - text boxes/highlighting hidden unless selected in Acrobat Pro 9.2

I am working Acrobat Pro 9.2. When I insert a text box, it disappears when I click somewhere else. I can only tell it's there If I hover over it - I get a black mouse arrow. If I click on it and select it, then I can see the text and border, but if I click anywhere else, it disappears. I've tried all the options and settings I can find. It is set to show, not hide, all comments and text boxes. Also, when I try to highlight regular text, it puts a little yellow, symbol above my text but does not highlight the text. When I roll the mouse over it, a yellow note pops up with the text I highlighted, but when I move the mouse away, nothing is highlighted. Again, I've tried changing all of the settings I can find related to highlighting but nothing works. I use Acrobat on other computers and have used both text boxes and highlighting without any problem. Is this due to a setting somewhere, or is there something wrong with my installation of Adobe? Something to check.
To have text selected by the Highlight tool placed into the annotation's pop-up:
Preferences > select Category "Commenting"
There are three panes of configuration options.
--| View Comments
--| Pop-Up Open Behavior
--| Making Comments
Tick the last option (Copy selected text into Highlight, Cross-Out, and Underline comment pop-ups) in the third pane.
Play with the other options as you may find others that are very useful.
For form fields:
Preferences > select Category "Forms"
In the first pane (General), select "Show focus rectangle".
In the second pane (Highlight Color) select "Show border hover color for fields".

Use different "fx-border-image-source" for first tab and remaining tabs

How can I "fix up" the first tab of tab panes that are created after I "fixed up" the first tab of the initial tab pane?
My app allows user to create new tab panes at any moment during program execution.Not easy to answer this one.
The best answer would be to use structural pseudoclasses, but (as David points out), they are not yet implemented.
The trick here is how to identify the first tab of each tab pane so that it can be styled separately from the other panes.
Doing the styling without a dynamic lookup is preferrable to using a dynamic lookup (i.e. when the first tab is created give it a specific style, e.g. tab0).
This is how the charts work, where they set style classes based on series of data, e.g. series0, series1 - this allows you to independently style each series of data.
However the chart stuff has all of that built into the implementation, whereas the tabs don't. To achieve that you would likely need to go into the TabSkin code (http://openjdk.java.net/projects/openjfx/) find out where and how it generates the Tab nodes and write a custom tab skin or extension of the existing one which assigns a numeric style class to each new tab in a pane (e.g tab0, tab1, etc). In other words, not particularly easy if you are unfamilar with the tab skin implementation. You could log a javafx jira feature request to have those style classes set on tabs - file it here => http://javafx-jira.kenai.com.
In the meantime a simple alternative is to use the dynamic lookup method in my previous post and a hack such that whenever you add a new tab pane to the scene you do something like the following:

I know that when you initially show the stage and then do a lookup, the css pass seems to have already been done and the lookup will work. But for something that is dynamically added or modified after the scene is displayed - I have no idea when the css layout pass occurs, other than it's some time in the future and not at the time that you add the tabPane to the scene. So, the Timeline introduces a short delay to (hopefully) give the css layout pass time to execute and allow the lookup to work (not return null). Not the best or most efficient solution, but should work for you.
