Select certain media to be stored on external hard drive

I would like to store my music on my mac but keep the larger files, like TV shows and podcasts, on an external hard drive. This way I could still listen to music directly from the mac but would only need to connect my external drive to watch tv shows or sync with my ipod. I don't see an obvious way to do this. Would it work if I temporarily change the location of my itunes folder when I download tv shows and podcasts?

Yes it will, if you are very strict with yourself and remember to switch it back.
I kept forgetting ~ things got a tad messed up, but eventually I fixed it.
I suggest contacting Apple. iTunes could really do with a few more settings on where to save media content. It's all plunked under "music".
I'd also prefer to have separate Movie/TV, podcast, music apps, and even artwork folder locations.

They won't give a direct answer when you submit that form, but if enough folks request this, it may come to pass.

do i have to select what i back up onto my external hard drive, or does it back up everything automatically?

It depends on the app you want to use to make backups.
If you are going to use Time Machine (recommended because it's the easiest), you just have to set it up and it will back up the whole OS X partition on the external drive, so don't worry. However, you can exclude items if you want. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427 Also, have a look at Pondini's site > http://pondini.org
Another option are the cloning apps, like Carbon Copy Cloner. These apps also clone the whole hard drive, but you can manually select the things you want to back up. The advantage of the clones is that you can start up your computer from them

  • HT201250 Can Time Machine backup files stored on external hard drive

Can Time Machine back up files that are stored on external hard drive and save them on a different external hard drive?
I have my pictures stored on an external hard drive connected to my iMac. I want to make an exact copy of the pictures folder on a separate external hard drive. Can Time Machine do that?
    If yes, how?
If no, what's a good way to create a mirror of the folder on External Hard Drive #1 (the original) on External Hard Drive #2 (the backup)?
I am not opposed to manually copying every couple weeks or month, but (1) it's less convenient and (2) I got an error message the first time I tried this saying the files couldn't be copied because some of the files being copied had the same name as each other (not exactly that, I'm at work and don't have the message in front of me right now, but that was the gist of it).
    Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

  • How to move media and librar[ies] to external hard drive, when 'Keep organized' de-selcted

Newbie to mac, sorry for being so dense. I am  nervous about my understanding of iTunes and from the many posts I’ve read realize how easily I could screw this up.  Can someone point me to step by step directions for moving the actual media ‘files’, ie the mp3s, as well as the necessary library files, to an external drive, when ‘keep media organized’ and ‘copy files to media folder’ are NOT SELECTED?
I am running OS X 10.6.8 and iTunes 10 [and prefer a solution which does not require updating software …so far that never goes well for me. (:
For myriad reasons, I prefer to maintain my own customized  folder and file structure for my mp3s; and have therefore de-selected
1] Keep iTUnes Media folder organized  and 2] Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.
All the directions in the various posts seem to require selecting these options.  Is this critical for success?
From the many posts I have read, it seems there’s more to it than just drag and drop, that I need to ensure that iTunes is ‘pointed’ to somewhere? Not the mp3s themselves, but to a ‘library” [is that yet another copy of the mp3s? somewhere on my hard drive?].
Additionally, over the years I have moved about 45GB of mp3s to ‘storage’ external hard drives to create more space on my laptop. Not ideal interim solution.  I am again low on space and have decided to buy new external drive for holding all of my mp3s, ie the 45 GB in ‘storage’ and the remaining 75 GB from my laptop.  Ideally, I would like to also keep all my artwork, playlists and ratings and the like [which I guess are in the ‘libraries’???]
Am I correct, that I will need to also move to the new external hard drive that folder which holds the .itl and .xml files and which is named ‘iTunes’???  and then there is another step to link the ‘media’ to the ‘library’ to ‘itunes’????
Again, any clarification is greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

Unfortunately you have the worst possible situation for doing this.  If you let iTunes organize files you could simply let iTunes relocate them by consolidating in advanced preferences and it would all be done with a few minutes effort on your part with nothing getting lost.  Organizing your own media means when you move things to a different drive iTunes will lose track of many if not all the links.
First, try simply dragging the whole iTunes folder to the external drive and start iTunes with the option/alt key held down.  Guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.  If you are lucky it will move as a package.  If you are not, the link locations will all be bad because it will still be looking for the files on the internal drive.  It may look like it is working but get info on a file or two and see if it is still referencing the file on the internal drive or if it is really using the external drive.
When you move the files from the third drive to the new external I can almost guarantee you every single link will break.  Again because you do not let iTunes organize media you can't use iTunes' own repair link feature.  One solution will be to take the old .xml file and open it in a text editor.  Do a global replace of the old drive path with the path to the location of the files on the new drive.  Now if all your old links broke for the main library you will have to do this for both the main library on the new drive as well as the relocated files from the main drive.  Now this is really starting to get messy and I am going to fade at any minute now because it is getting late.  If you needed to do this for all files go ahead and create a new library using the option key method mentioned earlier, then import the .xml into the new library.  If you only need to edit the third drive files then remove any references to the old main library files in this edited .xml and import just the edited third drive file references.  See?  Isn't that all nice and clear?  Oh, realize that the .xml does not contain 100% of the information in the .itl (you cannot edit the .itl).  You will lose ratings, play count, date added.  Ratings and play count can be saved using other tricks which would take about as much typing as I have done already so I won't go there unless they are absolutely critical to you.

  • Storing on external hard drive

When you store on an external hard drive, do you store the iphoto library or copy of the individual photos?
I noticed that when I do the library, and try to open a photo, there is a exclamation point instead of the image. When I open the actual photo, it opens.
Want to overhaul my storage and make sure I have everything saved properly.
    Thanks.

What are you storing on the External drive?
If you are running a Managed library then to move the Library to an external:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you are running a Referenced Library things are more complicated.
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed library is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
A Referenced Library, is when you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.

  • Iphoto 11 does not recognise iphoto 9 library stored on external hard drive

    Hi anyone,
Been tormented for a full week now where I have "lost" nearly 100Gb of phots. It is driving me insane! I have tried all the possible remedies - the Comd Option functions on iphoto start up, the rebuild, the rebuild on iphot manager, changing the "show package contents" options - but nothing.
The problem. I recently upgraded my mac and with it the software - going from iphoto 09 to iphoto 11.  I had been using a smaller library (15Gb) stored on my Mac which migrated fine. The issue was when I tried to connect into my external library that things went haywire.  The photographs on the external harddrive show as black squares on iphoto 11, sometimes it briefly flashes the underneath image, but none of them are able to open. The migrated images are fine.
I've tried to then create copies of my external hard drive library  but even when I play around with these copies the problem persists. I am terrified that I've corrupted the parent. The external library still opens fine on my old machine on iphoto 09. When I look at "show package contents" under preview on the iphoto 11 mac, the images come up fine so I know they are (at least the majority, there seems to be some phots missing!).
I am at the very limit of my technical ability and sanity. I don't have a time machine backup, my parent library isn't fully backed up so if I revert back to a stored master I will lose a couple of months of photos which included last summers Olympics.
The other threads don't seem to cover this exact problem - has anyone else suffered? Any remedies would be gratefully appreciated and would move me down the stress ladder by at least a couple of rungs.
    Kind regards,
    John
    iphoto 11 iphoto11  iLife11 iLife_11 iphoto09 iphoto_09 iphoto9 external hard drive corrupted blank photographs disappeared

    Well here's the first problem:
The drive is in MS-DOS (FAT) format (a 500Gb Lacie).
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. So, get the Library onto an appropriately formatted disk.
If you're thinking of reformatting that disk, remember that doing so will erase it, and so make sure you back it up first.
I would try open the Library from an appropriately formatted disk. If the issues persist them try the rebuild with Library Manager again.

  • Music stored on external hard drive and iPod no longer displayed in iTunes

I have all of my music stored on a portable external hard drive. For some reason, when I last booted up my computer the drive name from the external hard drive changed from F:\ to G:\. Unfortunately the source for all the music was linked to the F:. Now the iTunes doesn't know where the music is. I have tried to consolidate the library, but it didn't work. And now nothing is showing up in my iTunes. But all of my music is still stored on the external hard drive and the iPod. Any suggestions?

  • Iphoto library stored on external hard drive GONE

My iphoto library has been stored on an external hard drive for a couple of years now, has always worked perfectly until today...I noticed that my desktop photo was gone, so I opened iphoto, and it says that the library cannot be found...at which point I noticed the hard drive is no longer showing up on the desktop of my imac. Also tried connecting it to our macair...also doesn't show up and asks if I want to initialize it...HELP!! I need my pics!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Sounds like a hard drive problem rather than an iPhoto one. If the drive won't mount so the library is available iPhoto won't work. So I'd run Disk Utility and see if it can see the drive. If it can then run DU and try to repair the disk. Otherwise you'll have to take the drive in to a service provider to see if they can mount the drive and save the files.

  • Premiere projects stored on external hard drive & re-editing

Hi guys, I seem to be one of the few Mac users editing on Premiere Pro 5.5 with AVCHD (from Panasonic HDC-SD700) files. Luckily I can use even the 1080p/50 files, but I have this problem: After I move the project folder (all Premiere files inc. the footage which I store copying everything from SD-cards and not changing the file names) to an external hard drive and later copy it back onto the computer for further editing, it asks where the files are. This should be fine if I know where the original file is but the problem arises as I am not renaming the footage - I understand this could be a problem with AVCHD files - and it is impossible for me to know which one of the 00000.MTS or 00004.MTS files is the correct one. (This obviously only applies to projects where I have recorded footage on more than one SD-card. In my case all the projects seem to be that big - I am an artist rather than a computer person. Apologies if the lingo is not quite right!) I tend to edit hours of footage together by speeding it up and using split-screen. Is there an easy way around this problem when saving the projects on an external hard drive or should I just start changing the file names to something like SD1clip1 without a worry? Or do I just randomly choose one of the similarly numbered clips and check if it happened to be the correct one and everything in the project falls in place? This seems silly and time-consuming too. Many thanks for your suggestions. Elisa

according to other opinions in different threads NOT to put all media in one folder, i wouldn't necessarily go with this approach. sometimes it's the best you can do. and you can always manage your footage with the editing programm, creating folders and alike.
in some cases you're left with no choice - in AVID e.g. unless you use its AMA (avid media acess) interfaceand sort of soft-link to your media AVID will first transcode and then story everything in one folder by default. it then creates a little index file that tells you right away if something is missing.
personally, if i knew i have multiple folders with the same structure and file names i cannot change (cause it'd disrupt the file structure), i'd definitely put in the initial time to transcode to not to run into obstacles later on.
advantages: better codec, less choppy playback, less rendering, no relink issues
disadvantages: transcoding time, less disk space, probably larger files
sure, nowadays software is designed to avoid just that and all my conversations with PP pros showed me that the basic thought behind PP is to "just slam your footage in and start editing" - but this isn't always the wisest choice. not because the software is not able to handle the codecs - but because you'll run into problems with data structures.
plan your postproduction like you would plan a nice dinner.

  • Deleting music from i-tunes after storing on external hard drive

I am running out of space on my hard drive from transfering and purchasing music from i-tunes. I have an externl hard drive where I have been backing up all my CD transfers and i-tunes purchases. I would first like to delete all my music from i-tunes. I have it set up now where all my new music is going to my external hard drive It is doing this but also showing up in my i-tunes library. I assume this is for me to sync with my i-pod? Would like to just be able to run the i-tunes program directly through my hard drive if this is possible? Also when I tried to delete the music it said it would be removed from my i-pod as well? I-Tunes support said to click on my recycle bin and then empty recycle bin. I tried this but did not find the link to click? Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks djfree

You only have to open Finder and select your external disk on the Finder sidebar. Then, open iTunes, select the songs with Command key and drag them onto the Finder window that you have previously opened

  • Itunes music stored on external hard drive

    Hello,
I have my itunes music, movies and tv shows stored on a lacie external hard drive that is getting close to full. I was wondering if there was a way to sync it so that I could use a second hard drive to start storing music on? I have gone to the "advanced" preferences and told itunes where I want to keep my music library.
Also if I have set the preference to tell itunes where the music is, what do I delete from my laptop to make room available on the hard drive (internal)?
    Thanks.
    Jack

Okay, I thought as much. I too wanted to also separate my movies, photos and music for example videos and photos on one external hard drive and music on another. It seems like this is not possible therefore I ask, if I buy a larger external HD, what is the general feeling people have about taking all 100+ gigs on current hard drive and moving/copying to a new larger one? Playback quality loss an issue?
    Thoughts??
    Thanks

  • Music stored on external hard drive

    hi,
i have a lot of music stored on an external hard drive, too much to put on my laptop and therefore can not keep it in my itunes library. is there a way to keep it in some kind of library so i can view and play it in albums, artists etc like is possible with itunes?

In the "Advanced" iTunes preference, set it to not copy to iTunes Music folder when adding to library. You can then drag folders of music files from external drives to iTunes playlists. They will be added the the iTunes library, but the files will stay on the external drives, and will not take any space on the internal drive (except for a small amount of space for entries in the iTunes database).
