Select iPhoto libraries in Media?

I have several iPhoto libraries. Media is always showing the same library. How can I select a different one ? Francois

I don't know the answer but I can guess that one of two answers is correct. When one has just the standard library, that library is located in the iPhoto folder that's in the user's Pictures folder. Obviously, since you have more than one library you must have more than one iPhoto folder. So:
Test Method One
However it is that you switch from one library to another, do so and start iPhoto. Now start up Pages and use the media browser. Do you see the same library as iPhoto does? Quit both programs and repeat with another iPhoto library. Important - change library, open iPhoto, then Pages. You may find that opening iPhoto isn't needed assuming this method works.
Test Method Two
if method one doesn't work it is because the media browser always expects the library to be the one named iPhoto in your user Pictures folder. That being the case, when you want Pages to look at a different library you'll have to actually move/rename that library so it conforms. Remember, you will almost certainly never be able to switch libraries without first quitting Pages.

2 iphoto libraries? and viewing all thumbnails but can't view landscape

We have 2 users set up on the computer and I have recently noticed that the iphoto libraries in each of the users/pictures folder don't seem to be the same size. Are these truly 2 different libraries based on which account our photos were imported into?
AND, my recent imports into iPhoto seems to be behaving 'funny'. I can view all the thumbnails, but, when I try to open any landscape photos, the picture flashes, and then I only see a black screen. The portrait photos in the same event are viewing without issue? Any ideas?

iPhoto is based on a database. Once you import/copy the photos into the library you can add a photo to multiple items, i.e. albums, books, calendars, without having to duplicate the original image file. All management of the photo is done within iPhoto and it's database. All access to photos for use in or out of iPhoto is done from within iPhoto. There's no need to get into the library via the Finder.
The following is from one of Terence Devlin’s posts on file access for use outside of iPhoto. It’s the definitive treatise on the subject.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Accessing the iPhoto Library Folder directly has never been supported in any version of iPhoto.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For Users of 10.5 and later
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.

Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.

You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
All of the above are a: faster and b: Safer than rooting around in the old Library Folder.

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up. My iPhoto libraries are on external drive. I'd like to migrate only the internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive then just plug in iPhoto library drive. Is this going be a problem?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one. See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD. Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select. Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows. Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items. That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

How can I import multiple iphoto libraries into Photos beta

I have successfully imported a single iPhoto Library into the Photos Beta app. However I have several other iPhoto libraries that I would like to import into the Photos library. Think of is as merging everything into one now that there's iCloud backup.
I started with iPhoto back in 2005 and have created a separate library every three years ever since. Each one is quite large, ~40 gigs.
What is the best means to import additional libraries into my new Photos library. Unfortunately the File import option on Photos does not allow for a selection of iPhoto Library file type.

Merge all iPhoto Libraries into one before migrating them to the new Photos.app.
You cannot add additional libraries to a Photos library, only additional photos. Or have several Photos libraries, but only one of them can sync with iCloud.

One is a folder from pre '08 and the other is a package from post '08.

You did not merge libraries - you now have one version of the photos in the old library with some (probably not all) metadata - the only possible ways to actually merge iPhoto libraries is using Aperture or IPLM - exporting is not an option to merge libraries - it is a way to include a selected version of a photo in another library

I have 2 iphoto libraries and duplicates of everything

I set up my macbook pro wrong 2 years ago and am suffering for my stupidity. I have 2 iphoto libraries, both with different photos in them. Last week I imported photos from one library into the other and now I have 56,000 photos, most of which are duplicates. I have deleted about 20,000 - folders were duplicated several times. New folders contain 'face' photos (just heads, from the face identity bit of iphoto but now as an individual photo). What I want to do now is to restore my iphoto to how it was 10 days ago because i can't cope with the number of duplicates i have.
I have selected folders and chosen duplicate from the drop down menu but this just gives me MORE duplicates, it doesn't get rid of them. I have bought photo sweeper app which is meant to show duplicates but this has made no difference to the library.
Can anyone help me either restore my library, get rid of duplicates or anything else?
I am not great with the compuer, so I need simple mac speak please

To find duplicates within an iPhoto library use iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -
Photos that are not in an iPhoto library can be imported telling iPhoto not to import duplicates (an imperfect procews) and then IPLM can find the duplicates
As to keeping seperate libraries - only you can do that - IPLM can move photos between libraries for you but only you can know which photos should be in which library

I have multiple iphoto libraries on an external HD. Not much memory left on my mac HD. So I'm trying to clear up some memory. I would like to merge/organize the iPhoto libraries on the external HD. But I can't figure out how to separate the photos. I just want to organize them into seperate years, i.e., photos 2009, 2010, 2011, etc.
And since I now have aperture, how can I get these photos organized into simple annual libraries onto the external HD?

Reorganizing your photolibraries can be error-prone, so before you start, I'd recommend to check your backups of the libraries, if they are current and working.

iPhoto does not support to export partial libraries or to import and merge photo libraries, but Aperture does.
Your question does link to the document "Aperture 3.3: How to use Aperture to merge iPhoto libraries" that describes how you can merge libraries.
Do you have compatible Aperture and iPhoto versions? Aperture 3.4.5 and iPhoto 9.4.3? If yes, then you can unify your photo libraries by creating a new Aperture library on your external drive and using the command "File > Import > Library" to import your iPhoto libraies one by one into the the Aperture library.
Aperture works well with large libraries. You could keep all images in that one library and be done.
But if you really want separate, small libraries for each year, define smart albums in Aperture:
New > Smart album
and in the "Smart Settings" HUD for the album press "Add Rule" and add a "Date" rule. Set this rule to "Capture Year is ....".
This way you will have all images grouped by date in the library Inspector.
You could then proceed to export partial Aperture libraries for each year: Select the smart album and use the command "File > Export > Album as library". This will create a new Aperture library, just for that year. You can open this library in iPhoto, if you want.
I myself prefer to have all my photos in just one library; that makes it much easier to search all my photos at once and to combine them freely.

Yes there is.
1: Log out and into the account you later want to remove.
2: Open your Pictures folder and look for the iPhoto Library.
3: Right or control click on it, a menu appears and choose the option "Show Package Contents", it's really a folder.
4: Find the folder called "Originals", select it and use the Finder menu to Duplicate it.
5: Move the Copy of Originals to the Desktop. Close the window.
6: From the Finder menu, select Go Computer.
7: A window appears with your boot drive, double click it and on the Users folder inside.
8: Select the OTHER users folder and open the folder called Public, inside is a folder called "DropBox"
9: Drag the Copy of Originals to that DropBox folder, it will copy it.
10. Log out and into the other account and access the DropBox folder, your files can then be imported into that iPhoto user Library from within the program itself.

Sync to Multiple iPhoto Libraries on iMac

I have mutliple iPhoto libraries in iPhoto '11 on my iMac that are segregated by photos/videos by year. I want to sync all the libraries to my iPad iPhoto. How will these appear on the iPad? As just more events in date order? I don't want to try it until I have an idea of what to expect and how to undo the sync if needed. If I end up with dozens of events from many years of photos just added to the one display window it may be too cumbersome to deal with. I was hoping the sync would give me a way to select by "library" grouping similar to Events.

After a little more research, I found that iPhoto Library Manager (http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ ) which I have on my iMac has a function called iPod Folders (inspite of the name "iPod," they say it works on iPads and iPhones). You can copy multiple libraries into it and then sync an iPad to it. This effectively results in your libraries being merged into one which an iPad can Sync to. In addition you can set the iPod folder so that it gets updated when you add/delete photos in any of your libraries. The iPod folder is a copy of the photos so it effectively doubles your disk usage. I assume that since it has merged the libraries you choose, the events would appear in the iPad Photos window all together in date or other user selectable order, not segregated per the iPhoto Librarries before copying to the iPod folder. This is not yet what I was looking for but better than nothing. I haven't tried it yet because of the large number of events that would result, but I will.

ATV2 - Accessing Multiple iPhoto Libraries

I store multiple iPhoto Libraries on a ReadyNas Duo and manage the collection via iPhoto Library Manager.
I have Home Sharing configured and would like to view all libraries on ATV2. Using iTunes to configure, I'm not given the option to select multiple iPhoto libraries when adding an 'iPhoto' library nor am I given the option to select multiple iPhoto libraries when trying to add via the 'folder' option
Any advice on configuring for multiple libraries or is this an unfortunate limitation?

Yes, create a new account for the other user and they will have their own set of Home folders, Documents, Library, Movies, Music, etc. They will be denied access any of your data.

Photos from Multiple iPhoto Libraries

I just purchased an iPod Touch and attempted to sync it with my music and photos via iTunes... and ran into a problem for which there appears to be no suggestion of an answer in the manual or help files. A search thru this forum didn't turn up any ideas either. It seems such a simple thing that I'm wondering what I'm missing.
Here's the issue: The photos I want are in different iPhoto Libraries (corresponding to different years). There does not appear to be any way to sync with albums in more that one library (or folder).
Anyone know anything that might help here?

As Ralph has suggested, if you want to sync photos from your computer, you must include all photos that you want to sync - with each and every sync. You cannot import photos from another Main photo folder on the computer. You must create an all-in-one photo library in iPhoto and sync from that folder. You can select one level of sub folders from within that main folder, but all of those folders must be included in the main folder - in your case it is in iPhoto. That is just how the sync process works with Photos.
I don't know how using third party apps affects the photos that you have already synced from iPhoto, but take a look at these apps in this Google search. Maybe Wifi transfer is the way to go for you.

Opening multiple iphoto libraries

Hi folks,
due to huge amount of photos, I use multiple libraries in iPhoto.
1) Is there a way to have more libraries opened at a time? to shift photos and movies between...
2) default library is the one, which was last opened. I would preffer to have it fixed and will not change whenever I opend different one
3) other applications are stick to last opened library (Apple TV, ...) why do not they offer all iphoto libraries?

FWIW there are 4 ways you can switch libraries with iPhoto 9 (11):
1 - launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select from the next window.
2 - hold down the Command key and double click on the library you want to open.
3 - when one library is already open use the File ➙ Switch to Library... menu option.
4 - use iPhoto Library Manager.

Multiple iPhoto Libraries in Aperture?

I have been an iPhoto user since the beginning, and thus have about 7 iPhoto libraries of about 5000 keyworded pics each. Up till now I have not combined them even though the current version of iPhoto should handle them all.
I am considering a new Intel-based Mac and Aperture purchase, but a key feature need I have is to "see" all 7 iPhoto libraries in Aperture without importing all these libraries into the aperture library. I get the impression this is possible with 1.5, but have not seen it discussed specifically. Ideally I could see these old iPhoto libraries as 7 projects; from then on out I would import from the camera directly into Aperture.
Anyone doing or done this?

Ok, I don't know if this would count but here's what I did:
I have two Macs and use iPhoto on both, populated with different content. So I guess that would count as multiple iPhoto libraries.
I'm on my MacBook Pro and I mounted my home volume on the remote PowerMac G4.
I launch Aperture and created a new project called "say "Import->iPhoto Library…".
The file browser drops down. I navigate to "Remote User Home->Pictures->iPhoto Library". I also chose "Store Files: In their current location". Then I clicked Choose.
Aperture started chugging along. I had created a new project and selected it for the import, expecting the imported photos to be stored in the new project. Instead, Aperture created an iPhoto Library folder on the root level, and a Rolls folder inside it. Each roll in the iPhoto library became a Project in the Rolls subfolder. Each Album in the iPhoto Library became an album in the iPhoto Library folder in Aperture. Slide shows in the iPhoto library did not get imported. Trash in the iPhoto library did not get imported.
Next, I imported the local iPhoto library to see what it would do with a 2nd iPhoto library.
Again, I said "Import->iPhoto Library…".
The file browser drops down and points automatically to "Local User Home->Pictures->iPhoto Library". I also chose "Store Files: In their current location". Then I clicked Choose.
Nothing happened. Background Task List shows nothing.
Thinking that Aperture could only allow one iPhoto Library photo, I renamed the folder and tried again. Still nothing.
I created a new folder and moved all the imported items into the new folder. I then deleted the original iPhoto Library folder that was created. Still nothing.
I then deleted all the items imported from the remote iPhoto library, quit and restarted Aperture and tried to import the local iPhoto library again. Still nothing happened.
So my bizarre interim conclusion is that I can import an iPhoto Library from a non-standard location but not my primary iPhoto Library.
I'm stumped.
I need to take care of other stuff. Will continue the experiments later.
Anybody care to try?
