Select network

Hi there,
I live in Holland, +/- 30 meters from the border to Germany and 900 meters to Belgium. Because of this I need to set my network manually. I use the dutch network T-Mobile. If I drive to Germany or Belgium (which I do almost every day) I need to switch the network, mostly I set this automatically, but when I´m home again, I need to choose T-Mobile NL again to prevent extra roaming costs.
To choose another network, or set it to automatically, it takes too much time. Sometimes up to 4-5 minutes.
I have an Iphone 4 with the latest firmware, the same problem I did have with the Iphone 3G and 3GS.
I do not have this problem with other phones. They are able to select networks sometimes within 20-30 seconds.
Can you programm to choose the option "automatically" network selection without searching the available networks first? Because if I want the automatical option, I don´t care which networks are available.
Is it possible for you guys to improve the speed of the network list and select an available network?
Greetings from Vaals,
Martin

And, oddly enough, it is all working fine. I can now choose a boot option without needing to select a network.

If a phone is sold from one friend to another and wants to use it on a different carrier the friend can contact the carrier it was sold by to request it unlocked.  I know AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint will give you the steps to unlock it as long as the original contract it was bought under has been completed.  eBay/Craigslist is really not the best place to try to get "unlocked phones" from, if it turns out the phone isn't unlocked then I'm really sorry you got stuck with that one and as stevejobsfan said above I would report them immediately and see if you can recover your money.  I sell phones for a living and this happens a lot

  • X6 16gb always asking for me to select network, ho...

I have had my phone for a few days now and im getting the hang of it and liking it more each day but its continuously showing me a task bar like screen and asking me to select network and it has a choice of wireless lan and a uncatorgorised one, what I want to no is how do I stop it from asking me this, my net works fine and I have no probs with any connetion but this thing is driving me nuts, it sometimes asks me 4 or 5 times every ten minutes, please help me

Have you tried setting the priority of the networks, so your home network is number 1?
To do this goto Settings - Connectivity - Destinations - Internet - Select your network - Options - Organise - Change Priority and move it to the top.
Once this is done, double click on you home network, scroll to the bottom and change Use Access Point to Automatically from After Confirmation
Also, if you go to Settings - Connectivity - Wireless LAN, if the network appears in here that you don't want to connect to, click on it, select Options, Filter Networks and place a cross next to it
Hopefully this will stop the messages...

  • Cannot Manually Select Network

I bought a SIM Free Blackberry Passport of Amazon but when I inserted my O2 Ireland sim I do not have the option to manually select network. When I start up the phone without a sim it confirms that it is open to all networks. However some setting within the phone puts a restriction on manually selecting network when I put in the O2 sim. I am having difficulty getting this issue solved. No-one takes responsibiltiy for the issue, I suspect it is a Blackberry fault whereby there is an issue with the software but it is very hard to resolve. My phone is great but I need to solve this issue to be able to use it.
    Solved!

Can you have O2 turn off all roaming on your account? Then just enable when you travel. That might force the device to stay on your home network.

  • [announce] tool for selecting network from console (netcfg-based)

    Hi all!
I'm happy to announce new 'wifi-select' tool for selecting networks "in real-time" (in NetworkManager manner). I heard on the forums there were requests for such a tool from the users of netcfg. The tool is convinient for use in wifi-cafe or another places you are visiting first (and maybe last) time. Then you don't need to create the file-profile for a new network, just type 'sudo wifi-select eth1' and choose the network you need.
The tool is currently packaged and available in AUR (yaourt -S wifi-select).
    It works as follows:
    - parses 'iwlist scan' and presents list of networks along with its security settings (wpa/wep/none) using 'dialog'.
    - if user selects network with existing profile -- just use this profile to connect with 'netcfg'.
    - if user selects a new network (for example network from wifi-cafe he currently visited), net-select automatically generates new profile with corresponding $SECURITY and asks for the key (if needed). It uses DHCP as $IP by default.
    - then, if connection succeeds, profile is saved for later usage.
    - if connection fails, user is asked if he/she wants to keep generated profile for further usage (for example to change $IP to static or adjust some additional options).
Parsing of 'iwlist' output is done using AWK script (this seems to be clearer than grep+sed in my case). I've put it under /usr/lib/network (where netcfg .subr-files are located).
I sent the scripts to James Rayner aka iphitus (maintainer of netcfg), he was interested and suggested to package the tool in AUR and if there would be some attention and interest -- he would package it in extra.
So, I'm waiting for your feedback and questions.

  • Automatically selecting Network after sleep?

I have just changed my network to include a WPA password (it was wide open to abuse by friendly neighbours before that!), but after lots of configurating of base stations and express base stations, my PowerBook no longer automatically connects to my network when I open it up?
Does anyone know the simple solution to this? I know it's not a big deal but I have kinda got into the (lazy) expectation of being on the network a few seconds after opening my machine up.
Thanks in anticipation for any help.

I tried the solution offered in the second thread and it doesn't help my situation. After going to Preferences>Network>Airport>"By default, join:" I have to switch to Automatic for "Apply Now" to not be grayed out.
I then clck "Apply Now", then switch to "Preferred networks" and click "Apply Now" and I still have no network selected after waking up from sleep.
Any other suggestions would be welcome.
Until I started experimenting with WEP I didn't have any problems. I've turned WEP off again and still have the problem.

  • OfficeJet 4630 Defaults to Network Fax when user has selected Network Printer Instead on WIN XP

Hi, just installed the OJ4630 and selected the "Network Printer" as the default.  When choosing to print an MS Word document in "My Documents" the "Network Printer" correctly appears as the default.  But when choosing to print a picture in "My Pictures" the "Network Fax" becomes the default, which is an error.  Please advise, thanks!

    Hi
Thanks for reporting the issue. Here is the way to fix it.
Go to windows->Control panel-> Printers and devices
Right click on the 4630 Fax Printer, select the option Set as default printer and you'll see two choices there: one is printer driver and other one is fax driver.   You choose print driver to set as default.
    Done
    Hope it will help you.
    happy Printing!!!

  • When waking from sleep, have to re-select network I want to join

Often (but not always) when I wake up my computer from sleep mode, I immediately get message "None of your preferred networks are available. Select the network you want to join." The network I want (wirelessly connected to my Airport Extreme base station) is available as the only choice, I highlight it and click "Join" and I'm ready to go. Not a big problem but this has been occurring much more frequently recently and is a bit annoying. Any suggestions as to what I could do to help? Outside interference from other electronics? New firmware? Settings that can be changed? Thanks.

I have been having the same problem. I didn't have this irritation on Snow Leopard 10.6.4..
I have it when I boot up as well as coming off from Standby.. I kept entering the wep key over and over, but recently I have started cancelling the 'Join Network' window and 'Turn Airport Off' from Top Menu bar and then 'Turn Airport On' and it picks up without any problem..
Very irritating, something in the 10.6.5 patch is screwed up...

  • Mail server setting to accept forwards from (our selected) networks

I am in the process of moving our mail from 10.6.8 to 10.9.
In ServerAdmin.app there was a place to indicate authorized networks for forwarding. That option is not available in Server.app. I am slowly working through the settings and setup of more nuanced mail service than Server.app provides and can't figure out where this setting is made.
Anyone know which of the various bits of the mail service contains that setting?
    Is it
    -o mynetworks=127.0.0.0/8
in /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix/Master.cf where I would comma delimit my other networks in?
    Thanks.
    -Erich

Yes, it'd be nice if Server.app accepted an option key chord or some such to access additional settings.  The default Server.app GUI is unfortunately limited, so it's off to the command line.
    See the command:
    sudo serveradmin settings mail
for a list of the settings.
    You're after mail:postfix:mynetworks:_array_index
See this Krypted article for some more details.
You can use  postconf -n /Library/Server/Mail/Config/postfix to verify that the changes took, and here's a lower-level path into this same area.

  • How make iphone auto-select network - DSL modem wifi "extended" through AEBS

I hope this is the place to post this - it involves an iPhone but concerns my wifi network.
I have a DSL modem on the ground floor which broadcasts a wifi signal.
I also have an Airport Extreme on the second floor which extends this signal to the third and fourth floors of the house where the DSL modem's wifi can't reach.
This extension by the AEBS is done by "creating" a new network (in Airport Utility's settings) which uses the same SSID.
This setup works very well and laptops can access the network on all four floors. However, my iphone - which I use for Skype a lot and is a main phone link in the household - gets "confused" on the first floor because it seemingly doesn't know which of the two stations to connect to. On this floor I think both signals are pretty much equally strong.
    How can I fix this?
Thanks in advance for any insight.
    /p

However, my iphone - which I use for Skype a lot and is a main phone link in the household - gets "confused"
Unfortunately, iPhones and iPads and other iOS devices are not nearly as sophisticated as a laptop regarding choosing the best wireless access point to use.
In general, the iOS device will tend to hang on the original access point to which they have connected....even when another access point is closer and may have a stronger signal. At other times, the iOS device might "switch" to the closer access point.
Nature of the beast until Apple gives us a better iOS operating system. In the meantime, about all that you can do is power off the iOS device when  you move it to another area and then power it back up to see if it will pick up the closer wireless access point.
Maybe one of the iPhone gurus will have a suggestion for you as well, so you might want to post over in that support area to see. We are not iPhone experts here.

  • Airport not selecting network automaticly

    Hello all,
I wonder if any of you guys can tell me why my imac wont hock-up with my airport express automaticly.
this is a new thing, it used to connect to it no problem, but i think since one of the last updates, i have had to manually connect it to my home network.
i have tried to make sure the settings are correct and all that, but

    If the issue pops up again you might also look at this;

  • Airport Express not showing up as a selectable network

I have a new airport express and airport extreme base station (latest firmware installed). I've set up my base station in my home, which is working fine. When I plugged in my airport express, the default name showed up in my available networks on my iPhone. But once I configured it to extend my base station range, it doesn't show up. If I restore the airport express to factory defaults, it shows up again in my iPhone. I can't seem to get the "set up" airport express to show up as available. Any suggestions?

i assume your airport extreme base station (AEBS) is you main router and you want the airport express (AX) join the network provided by the AEBS.
    you could try this:
unplug and re-plug the airport express (AX), then click on the airport icon in your menu bar. you should see something like "Apple network bj1234567" or similar (it may take a little while for it to show up). in order to set up the express, you will have to temporarily join its network ! you will get a message asking +do you really want to switch networks ?+ and you do want to do that.
launch airport utility (AU). you should see the AX on the left. click on the icon of the AX once to highlight it and click continue. follow onscreen instructions and, when prompted, choose to +join an existing network+ and enter the required information for your network.
    any help ?

  • How to manually select network on ATT iPhone 4gs

    Please discuss.
    Thanks.

It's more of a network problem in my case.  I had a microcell in a previous location that I lived where I was on the edge of coverage.  It was given to me for free as with your mother but did not come close to yielding the same results.
My current situation is not one with coverage (3 to 4 bars) but due to sub-par network perfromance.  I'll get about 10-20% of my calls to go through, missed emails and texts that show up hours after they were sent.  This was never a problem with my 3GS iphone as I simply left it on 2G when at home.
I believe the issue is with 1 of 2 things:
    1) uplink - downlink imbalance
    2) pilot beacon interference
To get ATT to fix these issues at my serving cell would be next to impossible.
This is a product of a poor ATT 3G network but also a bad reflection on Apple and their iPhone as my wife has a Blackberry and does not experience the same problems.
