Select range of anchor points
Hello, I am new to the forums but not so new to Illustrator. I am working on a scanned black and white image that I image traced in Illustrator. I am now in the process of seperating certain parts of the image from each other for changing colors. I know how to do this, but my way is by using direct select and going in and picking out points and joining them which is going to take ages. Is there any way to say select a range of anchor points on a path (not the whole path, but not individual points either) like shift clicking a range of files in windows explorer? Are there any other ways I can go about this in a more time efficient manner? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I am using the Creative Cloud.
It might help if you could show an example, and be a bit more specific.
Are you separating white areas or paths from black? When autotracing black and white imagery, I usually select any white fill and then Select > Same > Fill Color, and delete. Most of the time, the black is a compound object. As far as selecting series of points (assuming you are dealing with only one color, and not a repeating set of paths underneath), direct-select and shift-key-drag over points you want selected.
However, if you are wanting a complex black object to be made into various colors, separated by new paths you draw, then draw your paths, select the new paths and the shape underneath, and click on the left-most icon under Pathfinders in the Pathfinder Palette. You can also do this using Shape Builder by highlighting everything, choosing Shape Builder Tool, and clicking on one area. You can add other areas to your shape by click-dragging from one area to another.
If this isn't addressing your issue, then please post a screen shot and give us more details.

Another option is to temporarily change your view to outline mode, when your done switch back to preview mode. Ctrl-Y or View>Outline {View>Preview} The menu option will change depending on which mode you are in.
And another option, double click on the object in question to place it in Isolation mode. You can now edit to your hearts content. When done, click on the gray border at top of document.
So as you can see there are multiple ways of accomplishing the same thing. -
PS CC - how do I select individual anchor points of a shape?
In PS CS 6 it used to be possible to draw a shape, like a rectangle, and then use the direct selection tool to select and move one corne of the rectangle. However, in PS CC this does not work anymore. When I try to use the direct selection tool, all anchor points remain selected and so I can't move a single point, just all of them at once. What might I be doing wrong? Did something change in the CC version?
Thanks!I seem to be able to use the Direct Selection tool to edit points, e.g., on a rectangular shape, to select one only and move it around.
When I select the shape layer then choose the Direct Selection tool (white arrow), the path shows.
When I click on the path all the points show, with "hollow" handles.
When I click on only one point it turns black, then I can move it with another click and drag. In fact, just one click, hold until the point turns black, then drag seems to work.
Of course, you've got to be VERY accurate where you click.
And Trevor, I seem to be able to drag a box around several points, then move them. What am I doing right, accidentally or on purpose? Is there some kind of bug being invoked in certain documents maybe that I'm not seeing in my testing here?

How do I edit a single handled anchor point
I find myself with a corner that only has one handle (screen shot below), to which, I want to add a second handle. I could convert it to a smooth curve but this averages things out and moves my existing handle's position.
I want to add the second handle without affecting the path, to do this the new handle would be aligned to the vertical path. I would then be able to edit the second handle as desired, and the whole process would leave the existing curved path untouched.froodster,
To keep the left segment unchanged, you may:
1) Cut the path by Clicking the Anchor Point with the Scissors Tool;
2) With the straight path (still) selected Click the Anchor Point with the Convert Anchor Point Tool, then ClickDrag it to drag out the new Handle;
3) Select both paths (you may ClickDrag across the Anchor Point with the Direct Selection Tool) and Ctrl/Cmd to Join, ticking Corner (or all will be in vain). -
Handles missing from anchor points in Photoshop CS4
I am trying to etch an image in PS CS4, and the handles keep disapearing from the anchor points as I click and drag, when I close the path there are no handles, and when I use the path selection tool the anchor points appear but no handles, if I use the convert anchor point tool a handles appears but disapears again as soon as it is deselected. I am definitelty clicking and dragging to create the path so the handles should be present.
If you want to show the handles that shape a section then click on that section with the Direct Selection tool (the white arrow) and not with the Path Selection tool (the black arrow).

How to distribute equal spacing with anchor points?
I am working in Lesson 5 of Adobe Illustrator CS5 Classroom in a Book, and am having a problem selecting the 2 anchor points to distribute equal space based on the bottom center anchor point of the violin. The note said to reference chapter 2, which I have already been through, but even after reading the Illustrator Help dialog on pg 75, I am still at a loss. Can anyone explain how to distribute this equal spacing of 2 anchors relative to one anchor point?

Especially when working with a finished symmetrical shape, such as a violin, which may have been created using mirroring, in other words elaborating on a shape, possibly with something unforeseen in the first round, and especially when it is inconvenient to cut paths to work with one half, you may use the instructions in small print using invisible ink at the bottom of item 3 in lesson 5:
2 tips, using the Line Tool and Smart Guides:
To make sure the left Anchor Point has the same same distance from the bottom Anchor Point, first ShiftDrag horizontally with the Line Segment Tool from the right Anchor Point to cross the path, then select the violin path and click it with the Add Anchor Point Tool where Smart Guides say intersect.
Or to place both Anchor Points at the same time instead, first create a sufficiently long horizontal path with the Line Segment Tool below the violin path, then ShiftDrag it upwards to cross the violin path at the desired distances, then select the violin path and click it with the Add Anchor Point Tool where Smart Guides say intersect, both right and left. -
For some reason, when I use a selection too, the anchor points no longer show. One might show when I pass the cursor over it, but you can't see where they all are--and there's no way to grab point to change a curve.
I had been able to do this, and I've tried changing the preferences, but it just stopped acting normally.This link doesn't work. I have the same problem as diana_danski. The anchor points doesn't show anymore, only when I hoover over it

You will not get orphan points if you delete a segment that is not at the end of a path. For segment that is at the end of a path, or is the entire path, select the end point/s and press delete. For the one segment that is entire path you can use the selection tool (black pointer) or hold Alt with the direct selection tool (white pointer) which is useful for objects in a group. -
I just started of with flash, and while checking the drawing abilities I ran into a snag.
I draw out a certain image with as few anchor points as possible using curves, after it's done I keep running into lots of extra anchor points the program keeps adding between the ones I defined. This makes manipulating the image later a lot more difficult than necessary. Is there an option to set a limit for this or turn it off all together? There must be, but I can't seem to find it. Even if later on for animating it becomes necessary to add more points I'd still like to be able to decide how many, and where should those points be.
I tried searching for this but couldn't find any useful answers.
Another thing I'd like to ask though I probably know the answer already. Is there a way to use transformations on a selected set of anchor points while maintaining connection to the rest? It can be done in illustrator, but not here as far as I can tell.
Thanks in advance.Try moving the 'top' anchor down a little bit. I have run into a few issues when the anchor was to close to the top of the canvas for example JS not smooth scrolling, it would just jump to the top or it would not do a thing like what you are experiencing.

Can't select anchor points of some shapes in Photoshop CC 2014
I have a multi-layered file with a number of shape objects. When I go to the direct selection tool and try to click on an anchor point the points simply do not show up. Is there some property that I am not aware of that prevents selection?
Can you upload the psd file. The Path palette shows a very small triangle path on the right edge of the canvas up some from the bottom of the document. With the direct path tool active and the shape layer targeted even if no point is selected I would expect the see the path outline shown in the Path Palette for the shape layer to be shown in the image window also I see none. Can you see the path outline? Are you on a Mac I'm on a PC using cc2014 with todays update

In Flash CS4, how do you select multiple anchor points across separate layers?
I am talking about anchor points on a line, not a keyframe. They are also called "handles". I can select the anchor points as "white" quickly, but I can't get them to be "solid"without doing it layer by layer, which is tedious. What I want is way to select lines that are in different layers and get the points I selected in a way similar to the regular selection tool or free transform tool. I have been trying to do this all day and I can't find a good way to do this, and I would appreciate any help.
Here is an image of what I'm trying to do, but more easily. The lines are on separate layers, but when I select them with the subselection tool I have to go layer by layer selecting the points. I'm trying to look for a very quick way of doing it. When I do select all with the subselection tool on, the anchor points are only "white" and not "solid" as shown below.Now you're post was a while ago and I still need a solution, but I have to say this. But you are right; I should probably act a little bit nicer and reiterate what I’ve already said before, I’ll probably get more help from it. It just seems to be a simple feature that seems to be needed to be in the program. I didn't mean it takes forever to move, it takes forever to select multiple anchor points across, let's say 10 layers, so that's 10 different lines on 10 layers. You have to select each layer and then select the anchor points. If there is an away to select anchor points across all layers in one go please tell me. Maybe I was wrong, but I could’ve sworn I’ve seen ideas that were posted on here get taken into Adobe as a suggestion, but yes I submitted it as a suggestion to Adobe, but I wanted to confirm that there was no way of doing it first since it seems kind unbelievable because the regular selection tool works across multiple layers.

Retrieving the selected anchor points coordinates.
I have read the scripting guide,
and learned about finding coordinates this way:

I'm wondering how you would find the coordinates of a selected anchor point.
For example: You make a hexagon, and then click on a single anchor point with the direct select tool.
I want the script to know the coordinates of that anchor point.
I'm using javascript and CS5.

Show not selected anchor points (and connect)
Hello.
Every now and then I have the problem in Illustrator that I want to connect two anchor points with the pen tool. The two anchor points belong to different objects. Is there any way to always show all anchor points. Today I have to select one of the object to see the first anchor point I want to connect. And then hovering the point over the plaece where I presume the second anchor point is located until the mouse icon indicates that I have the pointer at an anchor point.
A second question: Is there any way to connect more than two “lines” to an anchor point? I.e intersect and connect an anchorpoint in the middle of a line with a third anchor point.Almost.
My thought was that if I could see all anchorpoints of all objects, without selecting the objects. Ie. se all "white" anchor points, when I select them they will become "filled/blue". -
Direct Selection Tool will not choose individual "path" anchor points

I am unable to select individual anchor points and line segments of a path, although the anchor points appear to be individually highlighted, copying them copies the entire path, not just the selected points, and deleting them deletes the entire path, not just the selected points. In effect the "hollow arrow" direct selection tool is working like the "solid arrow path selection" tool.
I ran Disk Warrior, repaired disk permissions. I deleted old preferences by renaming file with Photoshop closed, and then restarted photoshop.
After calling Adobe Tech Support, they are recommending I reinstall the entire CS4 suite, which I am hesitant to do. At the least I will lose all of my menu preferences in all programs. Should I just follow their advice and reinstall CS4?
Thanks.When you click on it with path selection tool (black arrow) which option is enabled in options bar at top - add, subtract, intersect, or exclude?
Can you combine paths?
Have you tried drawing a new path and selecting points on it?
Can you still add and subtract points?
Edit: Can you pull on the bezier handles?
Edit: is it a vector mask or a standalone path?
I'm trying to simulate your problem – in the meantime I'm brainstorming, not sure how else to help. It seems like something restarting the program would fix.
What about quitting the app. Then going to User: Library: Prefs: Adobe Photoshop CS4 paths, trash it then restart?

Selecting path / anchor point
Hi guys!
I am just browsing around the trial Ai CS5 version and there is something, which I do not really understand...
When I use Selection Tool {V}, it works pretty fine, but when using Direct Selection Tool {A}, I can not select the path or anchor points. When I hover over them, the underlying path or anchor point highlights, but after click, nothing happens. When I move mouse out of the clicked object, the highlight simply disappears. There must be some kind of bug, because in the Layers Panel, there is the selection highlighted and after hitting arrow keys, the points, which I selected are moving - depending on which arrow I am actually pressing.
So in the nutshell: When I am trying to select single point or just path, the selection is not visible, but the points are still visible.

It happens to many.
I believe it may be caused by the fact that H is surrounded by other keys used with Ctrl/Cmd; a mishit may go unnoticed (I wonder whether this term will pass the nanny filter) when the right key is hit afterwards.
