'Select' tool becomes 'hand' tool...?

I'm hitting some key wrong here. I'm trying to work with the 'select' tool, moving 'text' around over an animated map.
Somehow the 'select' tool becomes a 'hand' tool ... and then I find I can't move the clips on the timeline, I can't move the 'text' blocks to position them. It keeps happening, and then I can't unlock the pattern to have only the 'select' tool. It keeps bopping back to the 'hand' tool. Pray tell, what keystroke might I be doing wrong?

I've seen that too. I think it's a bug because I know the shortcuts and I'm definitely not pushing the spacebar by accident. Sometimes the hand tool just shows up and won't go away from my experience at least.
It goes away, for me, after a restart. It's usually a good indicator of a much-needed break.

How can I disable Select Tool & enable Hand Tool using Adobe JavaScript ?
I want wherever the PDF opened automatically preferrence changed, default HAND TOOL remain selected. I want to do it using Adobe JavaScript.

You are correct in that it's not functioning, however I do not have that option under the "online and adobe online" section in Adobe Customization Wizard XI.  I have the following boxes that can be checked:
"Disable initiating shared reviews and data collection via distributed forms using Adobe online services (does not affect non Adobe online services reviews and forms).
"Disable the Tools pane in Reader"
"Disable file storage on Adobe online services"
"Enable file storage even when all other services are disabled"

  • Path/Shape tool and Hand tool are awful in CS6.

We recently upgraded to CC at work and I do love the idea. Hypothetically, what could be better? Sadly, CC comes with CS6 which doesn't shine so well. Photoshop in particularl is hindering me and slowing down my productivity. Therefore I am sharing my thoughts and hoping something will get done.
Paths/Shapes in CS6 are absolute trash. As an illustrator, I use these tools frequently on a daily basis. It used to be rapid and easy. Now, when I undo more than one stage I have to reselect the path, so that's +1 click per mistake.
I used to love the expanded pathfinder view, of the shapes/pen tool. Now it's contained in a drop-down which feels very dumbed-down and is +1 click EVERY time I need to use something in there. REALLY AWKWARD and a complete pain to use. Especially if I select the wrong draw mode. Why is there not even the option to use the old expanded view, or a PATHFINDER PANEL added to Photoshop for 'traditional' users/illustrators?
Seeing as that hasn't changed for as long as I can remember... I imagine that it is annoying a lot of people. I don't know how you thought it would be good to change that outright without even phasing it out gradually or offering the original view as well. Terrible. Don't even dare tell me to draw my paths in illustrator. Worse still, the infinitely useless marquee tool keeps the original expanded view! So it's not even like it couldn't have been done. Just. Annoying.
Also the Hand tool is a right pain. Are you seriously telling me I can't scrub freely? Outside of the 'frame'?? That's retarded. Even if an imported layer is larger than my document bounds and the 'frame' I still can't even scrub outside of it?
I've been a loyal user of photoshop for over 10 years and this is the worst update I've seen in all that time. There are great things happening, with the content aware stuff and better GL processing etc etc. Sadly, tried and tested features are being wiped out as you try and turn photoshop into one giant DESIGN button.
Sorry for the massive rant. I had real high hopes for CS6 and to be honest, I'm moderately disappointed.
I couldn't figure out where on earth to post this as I couldn't find a feedback button in photoshop. Which may also be a great idea to consider.

Apologies for the triple post but this is still frustrating me.
I don't understand why Adobe would do something that slows down long-term Photoshop users so much!
When I am on the path selection tool, the little check mark to deselect all paths is gone. Why? It was one tiny button that didn't even add clutter and was impecably useful.
Now, if I'm trying to add to my path or subtract from a path, the minute I switch my pen to this mode, the whole shape layer abides by that rule. So my existing path is inverted if I select subtract, etc.
Why does the pen tool now control paths in the same way as the path selection tool? I thought that was the ENTIRE POINT of the path selection tool. For selecting and modifying a paths properties. Any modifiers applied to the pen should be strictly for once you draw with the pen? Again. More clicks, more undos and more workarounds to figure out. All of which seem much slower and more convoluted than every previous version of the CS.
Also, where have the transform controls gone from the path selection tool? Once again, another click. Right click > free transform. Who thought that would be smart? Works for some but not me for a second.
These bulky, childish cursors are annoying some of my colleagues too. Even precise cursors are now massive. Where have sleek, 1px thick cursors gone? Why have we got these chunky horible things that look like they're from the Sims or something?? I'm not playing a videogame. I'm working. I feel like a school child with these hilariously over-sized pointers.
It's not even like a fix for these issues is needed. Simply revert back to the method which was practical and useful? With some of the new additions like the rubber band and illustrator style-stroke... All great stuff, if applied to the *real* path tool. Not this lame excuse of one. Why did you got screwing with what WAS one of the most versatile tools in photoshop? I can only hope this is the first stage of a major upgrade in this tool.

  • Using the rotate tool and hand tool at the same time in CS6

When using the rotate tool, you used to be able to use the hand tool even when the Rotate dialogue box was up. Is there a way to get that back?
I make Mandalas (http://www.behance.net/gallery/Mandala/2700497) and work from the center out. This poster is 18"x24" so once I start to get to the outer edge, I'm zoomed into the center at 6400% so I can get my crosshairs as precise as I can, then enter a number (45 degrees, 20 degrees, etc.). Clicking Preview helps, but if you're zoomed in and the object is out of view, you have to guess where it's going. In CS5, you could press down the space bar and use the Hand Tool even while the dialog box was up. Is there a fix for this? (Sorry if this doesn't make sense...it's kind of hard to explain over a forum.)

    CS5 on Windows 7.
I can use the hand tool while pressing the Space bar while another tool including the Rotate tool is current. But I can not use the Hand tool in anyway if I'm in the process of using the Rotate tool by holding down the mouse button or dragging with it.
While the Rotate dialog is displayed I can not do anything outside of it in any way.
I can use the scroll wheel on the mouse to scroll the view up or down vertically while using any of the tools including the Rotate tool but not when a tool dialog is open.
I'm curious if others experience different behavior on a Windows system .

  • Text Tool becomes Move Tool

I started learning Photoshop CS4 about a month ago.  One of the first things I learned was to add text.  Simple, fun.  I am now trying to learn about layer masks.  One of the exercises in one of my books is to open an image and then add text to it.  (The idea is to then add a mask and 'hide' portions of the text behind portions of the image.)  A really strange thing is happening when I try to add text.  I highlight the image in the layers column.  (Prior to adding any mask layers.)  I then click the text tool.  But when I click on the image (in the area where I want the text), the text tool 'becomes' a move tool.  A text layer pops up and the words I'm trying to type on the image come out in the title area for the layer (in the layers column).  I've tried everything I can think of to 'get' the text on the image but can't solve it.  (And this has been a SIMPLE activity for a month!)  Can anyone exlain what's going on?  Thanks!

I tried 'committing' the text but it didn't seem to make any difference.  (I checked the 'tick' symbol and still couldn't see anything on the image.  The text layer, however, was 'titled' with the text I typed into the image.)  Here's one thought . . . yesterday when I was having trouble I wondered if the font size was the problem.  The font size was 48 when I clicked the text tool.  I thought that was a reasonable size.  In the course of trying to solve my problem (including resetting the text tool in the drop down menu) I resized the font to 300.  Then I could just see it.  I ended up with a font size of 400!  I wonder if the text has always been there but it was so small in relationship to the size of my image, it couldn't be displayed.  Is that possible?
It sounds as if your image resolution is so extreme that the text is not visible.
Look in Image > Image size and tell us the resolution

  • Unable to activate any tool except hand tool

I can choose any tool either by menu or by shortcut, but only the hand icon remains visible and active.  Reopen Photoshop and rebooting mac doesn't help, only solution I have found is: Repair Disk Permissions.  Would really like a simpler/faster solution, any idea's

I haven't, but I will and see what happens.  Since the problem only arises at uneven intervals, it may take some time.  Thanks for your reply!

  • Acrobat 8 : Hand tool by default using AxInterop.AcroPDFLib???

    HI,
I've made a search in the forum, but nothing found corresponding to my problem...
I have made a win application using AxInterop.AcroPDFLib and Interop.AcroPDFLib to display pdf file on the screen.
This application runs on computers in a factory, and thoose computers does have a touch screen (thus, no keyboard and no mouse).
The pdf reader has been configured tu use hand tool instead of selection tool , in order to enable users to scroll the pdf when touching the screen and dragging the pdf file up and down.
BUT, sometimes, the pdf system (dll? reader?) seems to reset default value and thus, default behavior becomes selection tools instead of hand tools. This is a big issues for us, because someone needs to go to that computer with a mouse to set back the behavior to hand tool (big time lost)
Is there a way to "set" the behavior back to "hand tool" programmatically? or by using registry (i suppose values are stored somewhere).
    Thanks
    Mike

    On the toolbar, go to:
    Edit - Preferences - General
    Uncheck the box:
"Enable text selection for the Hand tool"

  • Canvas window only selects PAN (hand) tool

Has anyone had an issue where after working for a while in Motion, you can select and tool in the tool bar but when you go to work with it in the canvas window it will always change to the hand icon, the PAN tool, and not let you use any tool you select, only the PAN tool. Sometimes this will go away on its own but often I have to quit Motion because it becomes really annoying...

When I get stuck with the hand - happens when going in and out of text every now and then - just press the space bar. Motion doesn't start playing your clip, it just switches over to the pointer. Why? Bug.

  • How do i change the default hand tool to select tool when a document opens?  also how do i get it to open in a single page view instead of 2 pages side by side

how do i change the default hand tool to the select tool when i open a document.
how do i change the view from 2 pages to a single page?

Try setting the check boxes in Edit>Preferences>General for the following:
    - Make Hand tool select text & images
    - Make Hand tool read articles
    - Make Hand tool use mouse-wheel zooming
Adjust these as needed but does it make any difference?

  • Zooming whenever I double-click on any margin of pages with Hand Tool or Selection Tool selected

I have used Acrobat and recently upgraded it to Acrobat XI in order to use it with my tablet PC.
But whenever I double-click with my digitizer pen, with Hand tool or Selection Tool selected, on any margin of pages, it zooms in. i.e. it automatically magnifies itself as if I did the same thing with magnifying tool. This happens even when I try to double-click on the textboxes to edit it!
I don't want to zoom it all the time!!!

Try switching off this setting: Edit - Preferences - General - Make hand
    tool use mouse-wheel zooming.

  • How do I temporarily select the hand tool in CS5.5

I recently upgraded to CS5.5 (7.5.3) and it seems that the shortcut for temporarily selecting the hand tool doesn't  work any more. It used to be Alt+Spacebar in both text and standard mode. Now I can only get it working in text mode. For some reason Indesign won't let me set it to Alt+Space in standard. Any ideas?

It should be working the same as before (and when not in text mode, spacebar alone should also work). Check to be sure you aren't using some custom or oddball set of keybaord shortcuts (Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts...), and maybe try trashing the prefs (see Replace Your Preferences).

  • Hand Tool Automatically switches to Select Tool

When viewing a PDF in Acrobat X, the Hand Tool (pan) is available as long as the cursor is moving.  When I stop moving the cursor, the Hand Tool switches to the Select Tool without me doing anything.  I run a Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit Dell Precision computer.

What version of photoshop and operating system are you using?
Sounds like maybe you have Quick Mask enabled.
Click on the Quick Mask button toward the bottom of the toolbox to get out of Quick Mask mode.

  • Indesign CS6 hand tool gets stuck and can't use selection tool

In Indesign CS6 using Mountain Lion, the hand tool appears and I can't select or work with any other tool. All I can do is move the document around. After trying the space bar and other key commands I restarted and it worked for a while. Then it happened again. I work on a Macbook pro, so when I removed the mouse and worked only with the trackpad there was no change. When I quit and reopened, no change. I then deleted prefs and restarted and it worked, but it's been happening from time to time. Anyone know any other fix without restarting or deleting prefs.

Yes, this is an intermittent problem between Adobe and Apple: InDesign CS6 getting stuck in the hand mode. This happens to me when I am working by remote desktop using Screen Sharing. The cursor turns to a hand tool and you can't change it.
I stumbled upon a quicker solution (to restarting, etc.) by depressing the Control-Command-Spacebar keys cumulatively in succession. (I just happened upon this out of frustration--it is an old PageMaker toggle sequence.) When I clicked on the screen after doing this, the hand reverted to the pointer. Sometimes you may have to click on the pointer in the tool palette first before the sequence to make it revert.
I would like to see if this trick works for others. I see on another forum posting about Adobe CC that many people are experiencing this problem there as well. An Adobe moderator has listed the posting as "correctly answered" and solved that the issue is not an Adobe issue (rather bad keyboards, etc. etc.). But it still remains a problem with many Apple users of Adobe products. (It has only happened to me with Adobe products...no other vendors...both in Mavericks or Yosemite.)

  • When trying to edit text added with the Add Text option, the hand tool does not select it.

I filled out a form that was not fillable using the Add Text option. Now I need to edit it and was advised to use the Hand Tool to select it. I tried this, and it does not select the text, I see the blue box but cannot put it around the text to edit or delete it. Any suggestions?

  • Select tool/Hand tool - Changing default preferences

I am using Adobe Reader 9.1.3 and everytime I open a document, the mouse cursor is always "select tool". Even if I change it to "hand tool", the next time I would open the same or even anyother document it would again be "select tool". I need it to remain as "hand tool" everytime should I open the document.
I tried searching for a sort of default preference but couldnt find any. Tried searching for any old thread but there is one which is for version 8 and doesnt help at all. I cannt find the preference directory in version 9.
    Thanks very much.

    Hello!
Try going at Edit - Preferences - General and there select the option "Make Hand Tool select Images and Text".
If that doesn't help check this
