Selected event/photo import from iPhoto to LR 5.6

Greetings,
I've been using LR (OS X) since v3 to tune up selected photos. With the news that iPhoto is going away I've decided to import all future photos into LR. I can't justify importing all of my existing iPhoto pictures (>10k across multiple iPhoto libraries). At present, I import new photos from my cameras with custom dated filename, text field "event" description, etc. into LR and flag rejects for later deletion.
Much of what resides in my iPhoto libraries contains family events, vacations and other things that are fine where they are. I plan on using copy/import (with the same custom file naming as my camera imports) to bring my best photos and important events into LR and leave the others were they reside (where I can fire up iPhoto to grab a particular one if needed).
My question is: Is there a better approach (that might include use of the LR iPhoto import plug-in)? I don't mind having copies of photos in two places (iPhoto and LR) since I am only importing a fraction of my existing iPhoto data.
Thanks.

I found selectively importing was not feasible using the iPhoto importer plug-in. It is an "all or nothing" proposition (you cannot select a subset of photos to import). I ended up with thumbnails, photos and a mess of individual date folders.
I opted for importing the entire iPhoto library "Masters" folder for each of my iPhoto libraries into separate folders (not creating sub folders!) and using custom filenames.
The way I was able to reference the Masters folder in each iPhoto library was by creating a symbolic to each in my Pictures folder and then starting a custom import in LR.
Assuming your iPhoto libraries exist in a different location (OSXbackupHD for example), open the Terminal app (Applications Utilities Terminal)
Create a link to an existing iPhoto library by entering a command along the lines of:
ln -s /Volumes/OSXbackupHD/Scratch/iPhotoLibraries/iPhone_iPhoto\ Library.photolibrary ~/Pictures/iPhone5s_Import
The above command creates a pointer to the source directory (on a different volume) in your Pictures folder. Once this is created you can use the LR import mechanism to copy/import (or just import and leave the originals where they reside).
Note: make sure you set the import source to the Masters folder within your iPhoto library instead of the top level iPhoto directory to avoid importing thumbnails and other duplicates.

  • Photos imported from iPhoto to iMovie turn a bright red hue.

When I attempt to import photos directly from iPhoto into iMovie, both with and without the Ken Burns effect, the photos all wind up washed out and tinted red. I've looked for some sort of setting I could change to avoid this, but haven't been able to find it, and I've installed all the most recent updates. Has anyone encountered a similar problem? Better still, does anyone know how to fix it?

    Thanks for your interest.
I had scanned in monstrous TIFF images -- these were the ones that would turn to red tint when I applied Ken Burns effect.
I created an action in Photoshop to flatten layers and save to JPEG, then ran an automated batch on all the TIFF images to create JPEGs.
I imported the JPEGs into the iPhoto library, then into my old iMovie. These new JPEGs don't turn red with the KB effect. I then emptied the iMovie trash to reduce the size of the movie, and then could no longer apply the KB effect to any of the clips in the timeline (only on clips not yet moved into the timeline). I tried restarting iMovie, but that did not help.
So I created a new movie from scratch and that seems to be working just fine. I feel like iMovie is such a waste of my time. I spent about 10 hours on my movie up to this point where I can be productive.
I notice some of the images have scratches I'd like to fix in Photoshop. What's the recommended way to do that? Can I keep effects or transitions and just re-apply them to an edited photo?

  • RE:photos imported from iPhoto show up as white blank images in iMovie6.0.3

This is the first time this has happen to me. I did a project last summer and had no problems importing photos from iPhoto. When I used a theme and put my photos in the theme, I can see the preview all right, but when I apply the theme or effect, when iMovie 6.0.3 is done rendering, the imge shows up as a blank white image. I tried importing other photod, including the ones I used in my last project, with the smae results. Now I know the photos are the right file format because I use some of them in a previous project. I need help. I have to finished this project by Thursday night, 10-25-2007!
I doing this on my PowerPC G4and I get a message from iMovie when I launch it that "iMovie requires a Quartz Extreme Compatible graphics card. Without it, themes, ken burns and video fx may not work properly with my graphics card. I got this message with my last project, but everything worked find.
Please help!!! What do I do?!

If TD's suggestion is unsuccessful open the library folder and drag the Originals folder to the Desktop.
Then drag the subfolders in the Originals folder, a few at a time<  into your open iPhoto window.  That will import the original files into Events with the same names as the subfolders have.

  • Setting duration of multiple photos imported from iPhoto albums

in iMovie 5, i had no problem importing the photos from my iPhoto albums, and adjusting the 'Photo Settings' to what i needed, about 0:05 or 0:06. It seems in iMovie 6, that is no longer possible. Other posts here have mentioned setting of 0:03 or 0:11, but if not, it will default to some other value.
Anyway, in iMovie 5, i had no problem changing the duration to play each picture to the value i wanted, typically selecting all the photos in the project, and moving the slider bar or entering the exact value i wanted (0:00:05). That's not possible in iMovie 6, as far as i can tell. The only way i've found is to select each photo individually, 'get info', and set the value. The project is thousands of photos from 2 webcams of a building construction, creating a time-lapse video. I'm not about to select each of 25k photos to input a value...
I've seen the mention of using QuickTime Pro to do something similar. Is that the only option, or is there a way to do this with iMovie6. We only bought iLife '06 to complete the project (and upgraded, including updating all iPhoto albums & iMovie projects to newer versions), as iMovie 5 was not able to handle the large # of photos.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    - me

However, dragging the 5 photos to the clip area, they go back to that same 9:29 default...
Very strange. Instead of dragging the photos, try clicking the Apply button in the Photo Settings window.
That probably won't work. Something is causing iMovie to "stick" at 9:29. Drag the duration slider to a time less than 9:29 and import an image. Then save the project. Now do the routine I described earlier. It might start working.
If still no luck, quit iMovie and trash the iMovie preference file. It's located in your UserName/Library/Preferences folder. It's called "com.apple.iMovie.plist".
It contains the last Ken Burns settings. Discarding the preference file will force it return to a new default duration setting. One that works, hopefully. Then do the routine I described earlier.
If it still doesn't work, something is messing up iMovie. Rule out the problems descrbed here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1852869#1852869
Problems "talking" to iPhoto can cause iMovie to fail to locate the image, but it shouldn't affect the duration.

  • How do I import photos import from iPhoto on Mac Os 10X yosemite?

unable to access photos and about ready to give up on lightroom. Need help please.

iPhoto stores photos in a hidden folder which makes for a challenge.
Easiest thing to do is to use the export function in iPhoto and select the
export original photo option. Export to a folder on your desktop to make it
easy to locate. You will lose any edits this way but is the only way to get
at your original RAW photos (I am assuming you are working with RAW images).
Once the export is complete, use LR Import function to either the COPY
option your photos to a new LR-managed folder of your choice, the ADD
option to add the photos to LR but leave them the photos where they
currently reside or the DNG option to copy them to a new folder and convert
your RAW images to DNG files. If you use the copy or DNG options, you can
delete the folder you used when you exported the photos from iPhoto but
don't delete the folder if you go with the add option.

  • +++ Photos imported from iPhoto to imovie6 become bad quality.

Although imovie 6 is caught up with a sum of disadvantages of imovie
5, I observe a new disadvantage which did not exist before.
    With knowknowing:
In the "multi-media" mitre + "photographs", when I import
a photograph from iphoto, I observe that the image which is transcribed
in the screen of the visual display of imovie 6 is of a perfect
    quality.
For example, a photograph taken with 3,5 Méga pixels with a
    weight of 2 Mo. PRECISION : !!!!!! ( FORMAT IS JPEG ) !!!!!
The image is perfect, and in the internal adjustments
with imovie 6 that they are with or without the effect Ken Burns,
    it seems the original.
However when I decide to apply it in the
timeline and that I it replay in the visual display, I note that the
quality of the image was strongly degraded ( very bad quality).
There are somebody in the specialists or the helpers who can give me explanations and how to cure that,
because this disadvantage is strongly regrettable and detrimental for me.
    Thanks to you.

The main point to keep in mind is that before importing your photos, you must have the Ken Burns effect turned on in order to achieve the best quality. Also, remember that the iMovie screen is just there for editing purposes, and does not display the clips at full quality.

  • Importing from iPhoto to aperture results in having 2 of the same pictures?

When I import my RAW photos from iPhoto 09' to my aperture library, I get two same photos that are stacked together. One is of a JPEG of my RAW (probably created my iPhoto) and the other is my original RAW file. How do I solve this problem? I just want my RAW files in aperture.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Just installed Aperture 3 and saw the dual photo import from iPhoto. Makes sense what you note about any modifications/adjustments in iPhoto transfer over to Aperture. I just attempted an export to Aperture; choose iPhoto, File, then Export. The window opens and initial shows export local to be Desktop. I choose Applications, then cursor down. Aperture is gray, and will not let me export to Aperture. I'm probably missing something here, any ideas.

If you're using iPhoto 11 and Aperture 3 there's no need to move anything. Just open the Library with your preferred app.

  • Missing faces/places after event import from iPhoto to A3

    Hello,
I am interested in switching from iPhoto 09 (8.1.1) to Aperture 3. I downloaded the Trial Version yesterday evening. I have a very big iPhoto library (28.000+ pictures) and I did not want to import all of them right now. I wanted just a few events in A3 to play around with it.
I imported 3 different events into A3 via File - Import - Show iPhoto Browser. I selected the 3 events and put them per drag & drop into project. The few pictures were imported really quickly but I have some problems afterwards.
    1. All the pictures are missing the faces and places which I assigned them in iPhoto.
    2. Except the pictures taken with the iPhone - they had the places assigned to them.
    3. I do not have any issues with the keywords. They are all there.
First I though I made a mistake somewhere. So I tried this at my OneToOne at the Apple Store today. We did the same thing on their iMac and had the same issues. After importing an event we were missing the places and faces.
When I got home I created a new user on my MacBook and tried the same thing with that user account. I created a new iPhoto library (with a few pictures in it) and a new A3 library. I imported pictures with assigned faces and places and some pictures taken with the iPhone as well.
Every time I import a few events A3 does the same thing:
~ It imports the different events into different albums in one project.
~ All the photos taken with the iPhone will keep the places pin.
~ All other photos will loose their places pin.
~ All imported photos will loose their faces names.
~ All pictures will keep their keywords.
Does anybody else have this problem? Any ideas?

I'm having a similar problem with missing Places after importing from iPhoto 09 to A3.
After scratching my head over it, I created a new account on my Mac, imported some pictures from my camera and iPhone, and did some tests with Places. Here's what I figured out:
To retain the Faces and Places information from iPhoto, you need to use Aperture's
    File-->Import-->iPhoto Library...
    command, not the
    File-->Import-->Show iPhoto Browser...
    command.
My testing indicates that Faces were imported successfully, but Places are imported with caveats:
Places data was correctly imported for the following cases:
    1. iPhone pictures with embedded GPS location.
    2. Pictures whose Places location was assigned with the Paste Location feature in iPhoto.
    3. Pictures whose location was individually assigned with the i (information) button and then manually searched for in the Places map.
Places data was NOT imported when the location was assigned to the entire Event in iPhoto. That is, rather than assigning locations to individual photos, I assigned a location to the entire Event, then that location information was NOT successfully imported into Aperture.
I have reported this as a bug to Apple. I hope this helps clarify the behavior for you.

  • All the photo i import from iphoto (JPEG) to imovie is blank.

    Hello..!
    I need some help..!
I using powermac G4 cube, i just upgrade to tiger n ilife 06, when i want to import my photo from iphoto to imovie all the image is blank. But i unclick the ken burn effect, i can import the photo i have image...!
Got someone know how to solve the problem..!
    Thank..!

I appreciate all of your responses to my problem.  There is no doubt that I have a lot to learn about Aperture.  I guess the first thing I need to do is learn the correct process to import my existing photo events from iPhoto. When I conducted the import operation, I imported by selecting my individual events from iPhoto browser.  Is my problem the result of incorrectly importing from iPhoto?  Where can I find the appropriate import steps into Aperture from iPhoto?
Several of you recommended that I may need to execute a repair against my iPhoto library.  How do I run the repairs on the iPhoto library?
I am confused as to why every single photo is duplicated with one version being the original and the other as an edited version.  I am confused since I have not attempted to edit all of my photos within iPhoto.  Granted I have edited a few photos, but no way every single one.  More than likely I am importing the photos incorrectly from iPhoto.  I may try to import from my photo cards rather than attempting to copy from iPhoto.  Perhaps iPhoto automatically sends two copies of the same photo to Aperture as a default???

  • After importing from iPhoto, how would you eliminate the photos?

I have installed Aperture adn like it quite a bit. I imported from iPhoto (which copies over the pictures...not move.)
I have backed up the photos in iPhoto to an external hard drive in case Aperture blows up on me and I need to go back to iPhoto. But now that I have done that, what is the suggested way to get all those pictures out of iPhoto? so I can get back that disk space.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what's wrong with simply deleting and then emptying the trash?

  • RAW JPEG PROBLEM  I'm new to Aperture and neglected to mark RAW JPEG pairs when I imported (from iPhoto).  Now I have two images for each photo.  Help!!  How can I change this?

I’m new to Aperture and neglected to mark RAW+JPEG pairs when I imported (from iPhoto).  Now I have two images for each photo.  Help!!  How can I change this?

How did you import from iPhoto? If you saw the Import panel with raw -jpeg pairs, then you probably did not import your iPhoto library as library, but as files, and then you will see plenty of duplicates - previews, thumbnails, originls, edited versions. If that should be the case, it would be better to delete the import from iPhoto and to import your iPhoto library again, but this time using "File > Import > Library".
Only that would require compatible versions of iPhoto and Aperture.  What are your Aperture and iPhoto version numbers?
