Selected Track Getting More Processing Power?

Hello,
If I understand correctly, Logic 9 allocates more resources to a selected track than other tracks (if you have more than one). Could anyone elaborate on how this is implemented? Can I choose to turn off this feature and give the same processing power to all tracks/plugins?
The reason I ask this is because my Korg M3 plug-in is not playing nice with Logic when the VI track with that particular plugin is not selected. If i select another track, the playback becomes out of sync with the rest of the project. However, if I select that track, everything is played back in time.

Ok, well it's true that Logic functions differently than most (if not all) other DAWS regarding it's handling of buffers. Most DAWs keep a Plugin or VI partially active when the sequencer is stopped. Logic does not, this is how Logic gets it's high efficiency rating, you can load up a project template with all of the plugins & VIs you would need to start a large project and there will be virtually no CPU resources used, as long as you have enough memory you're good to go.
When you keep a plugin track selected... it is active or partially active, this allows the plug-in to initialize and clear it's buffers.
It sounds like the Korg plugin is built on an older AU spec, since Logic does not keep plugins active it's now up to the plugin to initialize and clear it's own buffers when the sequencer is stopped, this means that they have to remain active for a time after Logic is stopped.
A couple of developers I beta tested for cried foul because they learned about this after the plugins had been developed and tested as the original AU spec did not contain this information.
Anyway, it sounds like it will be up to Korg to update the plugin to be compatible with Logic. The scenario you've described sounds like the Korg's buffers have not emptied or the plugin doesn't initialize unless the track is selected.

  • Dedicate Processing power..

I have a strange problem. I am heavily into encoding, and sometimes when I'm encoding, I get speeds of 45fps to 50 fps which is pretty fast. But at night, I enqueue all my tasks and leave the laptop on for encoding. But the rates are much slower. The average comes down to 30fps.
This has probed me into asking this question:
Is it possible to dedicate the processor to a particular task or at least set the highest priority for that task such that I'll get more processing power and hence greater speed?
    I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.9

Fiddling with priorities to get more out of a process only has an effect when there is contention with other processes.
In other words, if the only thing that's going on overnight is your encoding process, priority isn't the issue.
I'd watch Activity Monitor to get a better idea of what's going on.

  • Why do the new retina MacBook pros have less processing power than the older models? I am looking to get one, which needs to be powerful.

I noticed that the new MacBook pros with retina displays have less processing power, and memory that then older non retina 15 inch. Why is that?

Are you perhaps talking about a similarly spec'd 15" current gen non-retina against a 15" current retina?  If so, then yes, there is a very small subtle difference when benchmarks are measured.  It's possible that Apple is downclocking the chips just a tad to keep temperatures in check, but at the same time, it could also be all the extra pixels taking up more processing power and causing the small difference.
I too have seen the same articles from benchmarking websites when the retinas came out.

  • Can i use a g3 imac for extra processing power

hello, can i use an imca g3 graphite to supplement by g5 1.6 model. if so, how? i am using logic and am running into serious processing problems....is there anything i can do to make sure i am using the processing power of the g5 to the max?
    thaqnks

First and foremost, make sure that Logic (and the 3rd party stuff) are the only thngs running on your desktop (ie, no Dashboard apps in the background, no iTunes, no iPhoto, etc, etc).
Second, when you do use a 3rd party plug in, make it sound as close to accurate as you want, then bounce that track and reimport it as a plain audio track (much less processing power need to play the audio track than to apply effects in real time). You can always go back and fine tune later.
Third, Sculpture and Sound Designer are HUGE CPU hogs. Use them sparingly or in the case of Sculpture, bounce the track or freeze it.
Those will release a lot of processor cycles and move you on your way to better performance from your machine.
    Good Luck!

  • Need help getting more then 24 tracks...

I have logic pro 7 and im running it on a G4. My problem is i can only get 24 tracks. But I want to run 48, i went to my audio hardware and drivers and changed it to 48 tracks, but when i select a track it only says i have 24. When I also go to my track mixer i only see 24 faders. When I go and try to create a new track its just a copy of another track and not its own track. How can I get more tracks to run sperately but all at the same time?

Cool I got it thanx. how many tracks do u think i can run b4 my computer starts not being able to handle it? I have 768 Megs of ram and a dual 1GHz, and a 80 gig HD. And Im talking vocals, music and efx all seperated on there own tracks?

  • I am using the Order Analysis Toolkit and want to get more information about the compensation for "Reference Signal Processing", which is scarce in the manuals, the website and the examples installed with the toolkit.

I am using the Order Analysis Toolkit and want to get more information about the compensation for "Reference Signal Processing", which is scarce in the manuals, the website and the examples installed with the toolkit.
In particular, I am analyzing the example "Even Angle Reference Signal Processing (Digital Tacho, DAQmx).vi", whose documentation I am reproducing in the following:
    <B>DESCRIPTIONS</B>:
This VI demonstrates how to extract even angle reference signals and remove the slow-roll errors. It uses DAQmx VIs to acquire sound or vibration signals and a digital tachometer signal. This VI includes a two-step process: acquire data at low rotational speed to extract even angle reference; use the even angle reference to remove the errors in the vibration signal acquired at normal operation.
    <B>INSTRUCTIONS</B>:
    1. Run the VI.
    2. On the <B>DAQ Configurations</B> tab, specify the <B>sample rate</B>, <B>samples per channel</B>, device and channel configurations, and tachometer channel information.
<B>NOTE</B>: You need to use DSA PXI-447x/PXI-446x and PXI TIO device in a PXI chassis to run this example. The DSA device must be in slot 2 of the PXI chassis.
    3. Switch to <B>Extract Even Angle Reference</B> tab. Specify the <B>number of samples to acquire</B> and the <B># of revs in reference</B> which determines the number of samples in even angle reference. Click <B>Start</B> to take a one-shot data acquisition of the vibration and tachometer signals. After the acquisition, you can see the extracted even angle references in <B>Even Angle Reference</B>.
    4. Switch to the <B>Remove Slow-roll Errors</B> tab. Click <B>Start</B> to acquire data continuously and view the compensate results. Click <B>Stop</B> in this tab to stop the acquisition.
<B>ORDER ANALYSIS VIs USED IN THIS EXAMPLE</B>:
    1. SVL Scale Voltage to EU.vi
    2. OAT Digital Tacho Process.vi
    3. OAT Get Even Angle Reference.vi
    4. OAT Convert to Even Angle Signal.vi
    5. OAT Compensate Even Angle Signal.vi
My question is: How is the synchronization produced at the time of the compensation ? How is it possible to eliminate the errors in a synchronized fashion with respect to the surface of the shaft bearing in mind that I am acquired data at a low rotation speed in order to get the "even angle reference" and then I use it to remove the errors in the vibration signal acquired at normal operation. In this application both operations are made in different acquisitions, therefore the reference of the correction signal is lost. Is it simply compensated without synchronizing ?
Our application is based on FPGA and we need to clarity those aspects before implementing the procedure.

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

  • ITunes 11.3 spawns Distnoted daemon which uses all processing power on MacBook Air

Since upgrading to iTunes 11.3 on my work MacBook Air (11 inch, Mid-2013), whenever I run the programme it spawns multiple Distnoted daemons which run up to 250% or more of processing power. I'm assuming this includes multiple threads, given the size of the number.
As a result of this, the computer gets very hot, and therefore I can't actually use iTunes for more than about 15 minutes - quitting iTunes solves the issue, though it normally takes the MacBook a good long time to cool down.
This is, I note, an issue which has occurred before in Windows versions of iTunes, but I couldn't find any Mac-related issues on the discussions forum, so I wonder if it's a bug in 11.3 or the current version of Distnoted? Either way, it's pretty intolerable.

I can't tell much from that. In general, a runaway distnoted process correlates with a failing storage device, but there could be other reasons for it that I don't know about. You might be able to find out more by following the instructions below, but only do so if you feel comfortable with them.
    Back up all data.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    sudo touch /var/log/do_dnserver_log; sudo chmod a+rw $_
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Confirm. You don't need to post the warning.
If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Log in as one and start over.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal.
After the next episode, open the log do_dnserver_log in Console and post the last couple of dozen lines, if any.
After that, you should delete the log file by dragging it to the Trash in the Finder. You'll be prompted for your administrator password.

How come although iPads are getting more powerful, the iOS apps from apple are so mediocre and just not that great? We spend all this money for the latest ipad and all we get is these $5 video and music apps from apple. Why create the iOS platform and only offer so so apps like IMovie and GarageBand ? While other developers are offering much better apps like pinnacle studio for video, Cubasis and Auria for music production, apple has not showed much growth in terms of innovation. While there's nothing wrong with making an app like GarageBand where "anyone " can make a song, how about something for real musicians or an app not so basic as it get for video editing? After spending 0ver $700 on an ipad I'd be willing to spend more than $5 for a better video or audio app.

First, try a system reset although I can't give you any confidence.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • Why does my track volume on selected track suddenly spike?

Why does my track volume, on the SELECTED TRACK, suddenly spike to max as if I had volume automation set. It never did this before a few weeks ago. Very frustrating. It happens during playback and loop recording. It started around the same time I started using a new audio interface (steinberg UR22) but I don't think that is causing the issue because I wen't back and used my MBOX to be sure, and it did the same thing. I have never had any use for automation or a master volume track either. It doesn't matter if I have a guitar, bass or mic going direct or through a preamp. It seems to be internal to GB settings. The only change I've made to my macbook recently was I increased my RAM from 2 to 4gb.
It's like Garageband has a mind of it's own and it feels as though there isn't enough signal reach the track to it boosts it itself. What am I missing?
Please help I can't get anything done because it spike in the middle of a take and I have to start over.
    I'm using GB 11 version 6.0.5

  • Choices in Expanding My Processing Power

    Hi,
I'm considering choices in expanding my processing power. Unlike those
who only own Logic Pro (which only works if a dongle is inserted), I own
Logic Express and I have upgraded to Logic Pro. This means, when considering
the equation for expanding my processing power, that one option is to buy
a new Macintosh computer and install Logic Express on it and use this
external computer as an external musical instrument.
So, there appears to be two ways to expand my meager G4, 1.5 gigs,
    Mac OS 10.4.8 system:
    1. I can buy an external box, probably one that plays EXS-24 samples, or
    2. I can buy another Macintosh computer (probably a lower-end computer,
but it would have 1.5 to 2.0 gigs of memory, it would have at least one
    intel duo processor).
Does anyone have any suggestions on how they've expanded their system
to perform more musical instruments in the orchestra? Specifically, I'd
probably off-load my Garritan Orchestral Strings (using the lite versions)
to this new outboard box or computer as EXS-24 samples.
Are there any surprises in store? For instance, if I buy an outboard,
non-computer, but an actual sampler-player, is it relatively easy to copy
ESX-24 samples that my Mac has converted from gigastudio format
to this external musical playing box?
Right now, I'm leaning towards simply buying another Mac and installing
Logic Express on it. Since Logic Express has a Channel Splitter in the
environment, I should at least be able to get 16 articulations out of this
    one Mac computer.
    Thanks,
    Sys6
    P.S.
Jonathan, thanks for your response to
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3436479
I will in the relatively near future, have more questions, as I investigate
in more detail your ideas. Thanks much.

    Hi,
Since I posted this question, I've been reading pertinent sections
from Paul Gilreath's The Guide to MIDI Orchestration, 3rd Edition.
I'd like to restrict my above question to an "older" set-up. That is,
assume that I will buy an external computer to use as an out-board
player (that is, it will respond to MIDI and create the sounds of, say,
the string section); and, assume that I will be using MIDI interfaces
or USB MIDI interfaces to carry the MIDI signals. All audio signals, both
from my main, old computer and the new external playing-computer
will go to simple mixer and then out to my speakers. Keep in mind that
this set-up is just for live, fast feed-back while composing (bouncing
    is quite a time consumer).
So, do any of you out there use an extra computer (or two) simply
to play back more sounds? Or, do you primarily just bounce within
    Logic using one computer?
And, this is my fundamental question:
If you bought a new computer, what brand, and what software would
    you run on it?
My virtual orchestra is gradually growing and now consists of the
    following:
Apple's JamPack Orchestra (but, as I explore, I find it not a real solution).
Westgate Studios: Woodwind Collection, Expanded Edition, $200
Garritan Orchestral Strings: I use the lite patches to save memory and
    processing power)
Pro Sessions Orchestral Brass (based on $1,000 Sonic Implants brass), but is a much reduced edition for only about $100 (and has limited solo instruments).
    Apple's EXS24 trumpet and trombone.
Westgate Studio's free Trumpet I downloaded.
However, even the above "low-endish" orchestra uses up more computer
processing power than I have if I want to hear the orchestral score "live"
(that is, in real time as I write the music).
    Thanks,
    Sys6

  • PE's processing power compared to Premiere Pro CS6

I'm about to upgrade from Premiere Elements 4 and get a new Windows computer specifically for video editing. I'm happy with PE’s editing features, but the editing and burning process is much too slow. I’m sure a faster processor, more RAM, and better video card would help. Since I’m upgrading for speed, I’ve done a little research and found out about Pro’s Mercury Playback Engine, CUDA processing (with the right graphics card), and even read about the benefits of a Solid State hard drive. Before investing in all that expensive hardware, I’d like to know how PE’s processing and encoding system compares to that of Premiere Pro CS6. With optimal systems for each program, how does their processing power translate into length of time to encode per minute of video? Unless Pro is a whole lot faster, I don't think I can justify the extra expense for the software and hardware.
I understand PE 11 can run as a 64 bit application, but is it multithreaded? I've looked at the system requirements for PE 11, but I think what is listed is the minimum--what are the maximum specs without going over what it's capable of utilizing? Thanks for providing the information that will help me decide how much upgrading to do.

PPro makes use of the (more expensive) CUDA cores in an nVidia card... PreElements does not, so an ATI card works just fine... at least 512Meg of video ram, or 1Gig if you edit large pictures with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements (my thoughts on video ram, not official specifications)

  • What can I do if I get an internal power error after upgrading to Windows 10?

QuestionWhat can I do if I get an internal power error after upgrading to Windows 10?
AnswerSome laptops with AMD graphics that upgraded to Windows 10 are showing blue screens with error messages regarding Internal_Power_Error. If you receive this error, try the procedure in this article.
First, you'll need to quickly set the boot options to Safe Mode:
    1. Hold the Windows key and press 'R' to open the run box.
    2. Type MSCONFIG, then press ENTER.
    3. Select the BOOT tab.
    4. Under BOOT OPTIONS, check Safe boot, then select Minimal.
    5. Click Apply, then OK.
    6. Click Restart. (If prompted, click Restart anyway.)
From Safe Mode disable the AMD Display Driver:
    1. Hold the Windows key and press the 'X' key to open a menu in the lower-left.
    2. Click Device Manager.
    3. Expand Display adapters to show the two display adapters.
    4. Double click AMD Radeon R9 M200X Series.
    5. Select the Driver tab.
    6. Click Disable, then click Yes to confirm.
    7. Click Close.
    8. Hold the Windows key and press the 'R' key to open the run box.
    9. Type MSCONFIG, then press ENTER.
    10. Select the BOOT tab.
    11. Uncheck Safe boot.
    12. Click Apply, then OK.
    13. Click Restart. (If prompted, click Restart anyway.)
From Windows 10 started with the AMD Display Driver disabled:
    1. Hold the Windows key and press the 'X' key to open a menu in the lower-left.
    2. Click Device Manager.
    3. Expand Display adapters to show the two display adapters.
    4. Double click AMD Radeon R9 M200X Series.
    5. Select the Driver tab.
    6. Click Update Driver.
    7. Click Search automatically for updated driver software.
    8. An AMD driver should be found and installed.
The driver that originally caused this problem is AMD display driver version 15.200.1046.2 dated 7/15/2015.
The driver installed through this process might have an older date, such as 15.200.1055.0 dated 7/6/2015. That's okay.

I'm having the same problem.  I got error message 21.  I went to apple store.  they are saying i have a hardware error.  Really, my phone was working before the update.  Asked me for $150 to get another one when I am due to get a new one and wanted to pass this one on to my child.
    Help please,
I will be glad to go back to the older software update

  • Hidden but still using processing power?

    Hey,
In some sessions which have lots of tracks I might use the 'hide' function to keep the session tidy - some tracks I don't want to delete completely.
What I would like to know is this...
If the tracks are muted / plugins bypassed / instruments bypassed, does this then make them properly inactive and therefore, not using any RAM/processing power?
Fro example, when you do this in Pro Tools, it cuts it out of the equation completely, so to speak.
    Cheers!

In Logic 6 and 7, you could go right to what is now called the Inspector, and where it said "inst 01", you could select "off".
This unloaded the instrument from RAM. What was REALLY useful though, is if you had gotten further along in your arrangement, and needed to adjust your MIDI part, you could simply go to where it said "off", and select "Inst 01" again. This would not only reload the instrument that was in there, but it even remembered modifications done to a preset (that hadn't necessarily been saved under a new name, like adjusting the decay of a patch).
This functionality, whether intended or not, was eliminated in Logic 8. It is sorely missed...
The only work around I know of, is to save channel strips that are song specific (as to not clutter up your library)

  • Get more episodes is gone in iOS 5

A large part of what I use my iPad for is listening to podcasts. One important part of this has been the "Get more episodes" that was present in iOS 4 that would allow me to...get more episodes...without having to hunt down the podcast all over again in the iTunes store.
I'm hoping that this feature has just been moved, and not simply removed. If so, I'd like to request that it be brought back. This makes my iPad less useful than it was before. It makes it more important that I have a computer to plug this into, not less. The cord is not cut.

First, sorry to say and I know that I am in the minority but I don't listed to music on the iPod. I use I-Heart-Radio to listen to talk radio, watch videos, and listen to podcasts.
This is also a feature that I have used quite a bit and while I understand that IF the podcast has been subscribed to, and IF you are within range and connected to your wireless network, and IF the iPad is plugged in, and finally IF you sync the iPad, you can update your subscriptions.
Wouldn't it be so much nicer if the "More" button as still there?
I love my iPad, I mean really love it! I am a converted PC user and I just can't get enough of it. I would really like to know from the Apple higher ups why items like this AND SIRI were left out of the iPad revision of IOS 5? I just can't buy the "processing power" reason.
Enough of this, please bring back the "More" button for podcasts.
    Thanks
