Selecting a specific Slideshow from iPhoto to view in Front Row

Hello! Can anybody help me to get Front Row to play an individual Slideshow, please? The Help that Apple provides for using Front Row is very basic, and I've searched for an answer on these forums without any luck.
When I open Front Row and navigate to Photos>Shared Photos>My Photos I then get a list of just the main headings in my iPhoto library. But each of these headings has individual grouped selections of photos. These are what I want to access, but they aren't accessible from Front Row. For example, if I select Slideshows, I have 36 of these, but Front Row just plays them all together as one slideshow. I don't want this - I want to select one at a time of course.
Surely there must be a way of doing this? I cannot believe that Apple didn't think of this when they created Front Row, but the instructions for using the program in Mac Help are very brief. One other thing, I can only use Front Row to access my iPhoto library if I have iPhoto running. This seems very poor to me - the library is on the same hard drive - I am not accessing anybody else's library. Again, there is nothing in the Mac Help for Front Row which tells you you must have iPhoto open to view photos in Front Row.
I do hope somebody can help me, because I especially bought my 27" iMac to view my photos, and being unable to select slideshows, or even subfolders for that matter, is most frustrating.
Thank you,
Bruce

If anybody has stumbled across this thread, having a similar problem to mine, you might be interested in how things finally turned out.
Eventually I contacted Apple technical support. They spent 90 minutes (yes, at 5p a minute) trying to fix it. They were very helpful, and suggested just about every blessed thing you might think of including dragging the iPhoto library out onto the desktop, creating a new one, dragging the files back in, repairing permissions with Disk Utility - one thing after another. Nothing worked - Front Row stubbornly refused to recognise my iPhoto library.
In the end what we did was to drag the iPhoto library out (we tried that before, but this went a different route) and put it in folder in the Pictures folder. I gave the folder a name just to identify it. Then I Option-clicked the iPhoto application program (not the library!) and it asked me if I wanted to create a new library, which I did, so I let it create a new one back in the Pictures folder (this was why I moved the original one out of the way).
So this opened, and of course was blank. So I went back to the Pictures folder in the Finder and opened the folder in which I hid the original iPhoto library. I Option-clicked this library and selected Show Package Contents. So now all the original files, folders and images were revealed. The only folder I needed now was one called Originals. I dragged this folder straight into the big empty window of my open iPhoto application, and iPhoto began to import all my original photos into the new copy of iPhoto.
Now I have all my photos back, but unfortunately all my albums and slideshows are lost. But one good thing is in the main photos window, with View set to Event Titles, and Sort set to Dates, everything is clearly divided back into event and date order. I can easily select each group of photos which are nicely divided up for me, and create new folders, named with subjects or events, and then create new slideshows from them.
OK it will take me a little while to get it back to how it was, but not quite the disaster it might have been if iPhoto had not been able to sort everything out from the metadata, into date order.
I am grateful to Paul Horan, senior technical support advisor at Apple Care, who called me back with what was admittedly a drastic solution, after trying a few fixes himself.
Hope this help someone else!

  • I cannot export a slideshow from Iphoto to iTunes

I am trying to export a slideshow from iphoto to itunes so that I can burn it to a dvd.  The automatically sent to itunes is checked but the export button is not highlighted.

You are asking about a slideshow in iPhoto on your Mac, right? Then the iLife > iPhoto forum would have been the right one to ask your question. This forum is for iPhoto on IOS devices.
The automatically sent to itunes is checked but the export button is not highlighted.
The "Export" button will become active, when you select a size for your exported movie. Press one of the sizes , for example "Large", if you want to view the movie on your iPad or Apple TV.

  • Better Slideshow from Iphoto or IDVD?

I have a project I'm working on. It's strictly going to be digital photos, but there are about 400 of them. IDVD can create the slideshow, but I can only fit 99 slides in each section. This means I have to make four different slideshow. Furthermore, IDVD will only apply one type of transition to each slideshow, not individual slides.
I can make a slideshow from Iphoto that fits all of the pictures and I can customize the transitions for each slide.
I'm just wondering which one provides a better quality slideshow. I understand that Iphoto has a few more options to work with, but slideshows can only be exported to small, medium, or large. Will there be a noticeable quality difference between the two programs?
    Thanks for any input..

I made the video 720X480 or 'large'.
This is actually the rectangular ('thin') NTSC DV video pixel size - in digital still image terms the real size is 640x480.
I've noticed, sacrificing a dvd to do so,
that the slideshow I made from iphoto fills the
entire screen while the one from idvd does not. I've
also noticed that some of the edges (nothing really
major) are cut off on my CRT TV.
CRT display devices (like TV sets) have something called 'ovescan' to hide the syncronization pulses included in the video signal.
iDVD gives you a choice of correcting for overscan if your DVDs will be viewed on TV sets (but on computer monitors, you will see black edges).
The video does not look as good as it could, but I
guess it is acceptable. I wonder if we'll have
higher quality options in the future release of IDVD?
Right now we are limited by the NTSC/PAL DV specification. As we all make the transition to HD, things should get a little better.

  • How can I export a slideshow from iPhoto to iMovie 09.  I try but it only lets me import 211 out of the 311 photos I have in the slideshow.

How can I export a slideshow from iPhoto to iMovie 09.  I try, but it only exports 211 out of the 311 photos I have in the slideshow I made on iPhoto.

how do i change the format to the right one?
Before you can decide what to do, you have to know what you are starting with. Sony MPEG-1 files would be converted one way while DivX or WMV files would likely be handled in another. Extraneous tracks can be removed directly with QT Pro but if you don't have QT Pro then there may or may not be other work around possibilities depending on the specific audio and video compression formats in use. The best place to start would normally be to double-clic the source file in iPhoto to open it in the QT Player. When it opens in the QT Player, check the "Inspector" window to see what it says on the "Format:" lines. This will tell you the type of audio and video content you are dealing with here. Then come and tell us so we can offer some specific conversion solutions.

  • Imported slideshows from iPhoto with problems

I am new to Aperture, but I am trying it out because of a bug causing problems with slideshows in iPhoto. I imported the the library with albums and slideshows from iPhoto. When trying to view slide shows in Aperture, a lot of the photos do not focus/show very low resolution. I have searched the settings and checked the originals' metadata without finding any obvious explanations. Does anyone else have experience with this. Are my settings wrong, or could it be problems carried over from iPhoto?

It seems edited photos from iPhoto library does not change the original photos where they were imported from.
That's correct. iPhoto will never change the Original photo.
iPhoto is a Digital Asset Manager and treats your original file like a film shooter treated the negative. It preserves it at all costs. So, every operation - editing, exporting etc - are carried out on a copy of the original file.
As Apearl suggests, you may be using more disk space than you need: Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A +Managed library+, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing
A +Referenced Library+ is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • H.264 slideshow from iPhoto looks terrible in QT X

What is going on here? I just exported a slideshow from iPhoto '09 as 1280x720 h.264. Quen I play this with quicklook or with QT X it looks terrible. Colors are washed out and desaturated.
However, if I view it in QT 7 Pro on the same machine, the movie looks fine. Colors are bold and nice.
This file is going to play on another mac (not SL), how will it look there? Can anyone explain why this occurs?
    Thanks,
    -Ed

Yeah, with 400 slides, even without the video and music, you're going to have a large file any way you look at it. However, large isn't a BAD thing when you're looking at creating something for DVD since large usually = high quality = good for that purpose.
Let's ignore the final output for now and always export as small ( or medium, just enough to see that your timing is right) for your tests. Figure out between the Keynote presentation and the QuickTime movie what appears to be going on. Do you hear audio then a loooong pause before the next transition? Are your movies not displaying like you want them to? Both of these are caused by the differences between the way Keynote and QuickTime deals with media. In Keynote, if you want a movie clip to play for 4 seconds, you have to put in a 4 second delay for it. When you export this to QuickTime, QuickTime puts in the video PLUS adds the 4 second delay so that you'll have pauses where it looked like Keynote was synched better.
Make a copy of your presentation and, if you have any delays, remove all of them and re-export to see if that solves a few of your problems.

  • Emailing a slideshow from iPhotos

Can someone please answer this question: is it possible to email a slideshow from iPhotos?  I've read the other comments and it's been a couple of years. I'm hoping that maybe this issue has been resolved and no one knows about it yet. Anyhow I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2010, OS X runs on the latest iPhoto version. Thank you for any help you can give me.

No you can't email a slideshow. A slideshow is simply a series of instruction in iphoto about how to display certain images in certain ways. To share a slideshow you need to export it. This makes a video of it. But...
Simply, sharing video via email is not advisable.
Many email services have an attachment limit of 20mb and some a limit of 10mb. As emails are sent through an array of relays, the effective limit is the smallest file size allowed on any of the relays.  That means that video is rarely suitable for emailing.
Then there's the whole issue of Codecs and not all machines will have the codecs to play all videos. Plus, folks with slower connections can find it very inconvenient to download large video files.
If you feel you must share via email then you'll need to export the video first, and attach that. Use the File -> Export command and set the kind  to Original.
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
Other than that your options include:
Upload it to a sharing site like YouTube or Vimeo and email a link - these will allow the recipient to view the material online. That will avoid the codec issues mentions, and the person can still download the video file if they wish.
Upload it to sharing services like Dropbox or YouSendIt and email a link. This will require that they download the material to their machines to view.

  • Sending Slideshows from iPhoto

I've created a slideshow (with music) in iPhoto (08) and would like to share this with my family. How do I do this? I tried uploading to youtube.com a while back but the quality was horrible! Is there a better way to share my slideshows from iphoto (with music) and/or video with people? (both mac users and pc users)
I am sure it can be done - I see people's videos and photo slideshows with music all the time on their blogs. I just don't know how to do it. I hope someone can help or point me in the right direction.

    Patti:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. See my response in Q: how to save book as slideshow? for ways to save the slideshow as a QT movie and one way to create an iDVD slideshow from it. As far as the iDVD is concerned for your slideshow you would add your QT movie file to an iDVD project and burn to disk. If you don't use the KB effect in the movie you can create the slideshow in iDVD with the same music and get a higher quality image in the final product that with adding a QT movie. But that's just my opinion.
To get it to the web you would have to use QT Pro or a 3rd party application to reduce the file size before adding to a Web Gallery in iPhoto or an iWeb site. You can learn about the best way to go about that over in the iWeb forum. Some top notch Quicktime gurus over there.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • HT4718 After burning a slideshow from iPhoto export to a DVD, it will not play on my DVD player OS X 10.9.4

iMac 27' OS X 10.9.4 I burned a slideshow from iPhoto export to a DVD and now it will not play back on anything. The player said Unknown disc. What can i do?

I do find that using one of these programs will reduce the sharpness of the photos.
Granted, I've never used iPhoto - I use Photo to Movie for slideshows and various versions of iMovie for videos, but my pics are excellent quality and my videos are shot in 1080p (better camera)  or 720p (small camera) and the results are superb on my TV using both iDVD and Toast. However, I do not encode in iDVD, I simply use it to add a theme and menus. The encoding is done by Photo to Movie, or iMovie 06 HD (the only version ever to process losslessly) and either/both are imported into iDVD as a complete .mov, or Toast.
Since using those methods, I've never had a problem with the sharpness or crispness of my footage. My eyes cannot discern a difference between my "production" and true HD (unless of course I shook the camera while shooting, LOL).

  • Exporting slideshow from iphoto to idvd /message says" disc is full"

when exporting slideshow from iphoto to idvd /message says" disc is full" It is a new mac with 2gb extra memory. I have cleared out all extraneous files, so there should be room on the disc. Help, this is a student''s work and would love to help them burn the dvd slideshow.

    Patricia
IS this your Hard Disk is full?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of HD space to function normally. It uses this space for things like Virtual Memory and temporary files and other OS operations.
I have cleared out all extraneous files, so there should be room on the disc
How did you do this? Did you empty the trash?

  • How do I burn a slideshow from iPhoto to a DVD?

How do I burn a slidshow from iPhoto to a DVD?

Export the slideshow from iPhoto, that makes a movie of it.
Do you want to use this DVD in a domestic DVD player? If so, then the disk will have to be 'authored' to make it the correct form for that. If you have iDVD then that's the app you use. However, iDVD is no longer developed or distributed by Apple. You may be able to get it on an old iLIfe install disk.
    Other options:
    Burn: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/21992/burn
    Toast: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/6351/toast-titanium
But there are lots of others too. Search on the App Store or MacUpdate
