Selecting a wireless mode

My first post here on Apple discussions...!
I wonder if someone can shed some light on the wireless functionality on the Macbook Pro. My Macbook is enabled with 802.11n wireless functionality, as well as AB&G. This can be seen in the Network Utility.
I moved to the Mac platform early this year having spent years using a PC. It's been a wonderful and refreshing move. However one thing that's always nagged me is the seemingly inability to explicitly set the wireless mode of my Airport card.
In Windows this is usually accomplished via the network adapter settings which usually allows you to specify a 'mixed' mode or explicitly set a mode, for example 802.11g.
I've searched through the settings on my Macbook and cannot find anywhere that allows you to do this. Is this at all possible?
I intend on moving to a dual band wireless N router that supports both 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz bands simultaneously. I intend on using the 5Ghz band for streaming media and the 2.4Ghz band for all other traffic, e-mail, internet etc.
I won't be using my Macbook as a media server, so I'd like to keep it's wireless connectivity in the 802.11g band, whilst having a separate media server take full advantage of the 802.11n 5Ghz band.
Any ideas?

First of all, Welcome to the Mac World and to the Forum
I'm myself a PC-converted since August this year, and what I have learned about the subject is that Airport (or Network adapter) is automatically, so it uses all a b g and n signals, so all you will see is the wireless ID in the drop down (or network preferences)
What you can do is create a duplicate of the adapter and set up as you like, give it a name and then choose if you are at Home or Work for example and let or do manually the select of the preferences that you have.
This can be done under  > System Preferences > Network > select AirPort and click the + button
