Selecting bezier handles and moving by increments

Does anyone know if there is a way of selecting an individual bezier handle and moving it by increments using the arrow buttons on the keyboard, (in a similar way to moving an individual point)? At the moment, I have two handles on different adjacent points selected, and am able to move them incrementally using the direct selection tool and the arrow keys, but I don't know how they originally came to be selected (I discovered that they were accidentally), or how to transfer the selection to another handle. I'm using CS6. Thanks.

You can nudge handles, but (par for the course in Illustrator) in a completely unintuitive and usually usless way. To see:
1. Ellipse tool: draw an ellipse.
2. Select>Object>Direction Handles.
3. Nudge with the arrow keys.
Now start over, but after drawing the ellipse, rotate it 45 degrees.
Then start over, but after drawing the ellipse:
1. White pointer: Select the bottom anchor.
2. Click the Convert to Corner Point button in the Control Panel. (That anchor's handles are retracted.)
3. Select>Object>Direction Handles.
4. Nudge with the right arrow key. Watch how the handles of the cornerPoint move.
Now try this:
1. Instead of an ellipse, draw any irregular path containing both Smooth and Corner points. Make sure some of the Corner points have extended handles.
2. Instead of using Select>Object>Direction Handles, use the white pointer to click on a segment (not on an anchorpoint).
3. Nudge with the arrow keys.
In Illustrator's unintuitive and uselessly illogical selection interface, "selecting a segment" is really selecting its associated handles. Sort of.
You can occasionally use this nonsense for special-effects and distortions, but as you can see, it's not at all the behavior you're really looking for.

  • A way to "re-connect" bezier handles and other path editing techniques

I've searched and rummaged through tutorials for days but I haven't found a way to do a few things that I've come to think of as essential when it comes to path manipulation.
I'm using Illustrator CS4 (on Windows XP SP3) and I'm coming from a background of Inkscape. Within Inkscape, there are several handy tools that are missing from Illustrator that I haven't found workarounds for. Here's a list of these tools and a brief description for each of how they work within Inkscape:
]- "Shift + C" with anchor point selected: this will make the bezier handles of the point move independently of each other.
]- "Shift + S" with anchor point selected:
b this will "connect" the bezier handles
so that moving one side moves the other side relatively (and opposite to each other so that the bezier handles form a straight line).
(note: in Inkscape there is no way to make the bezier handles relative and not form a straight line, which is something I know would be useful)
]- "Shift + Y" with anchor point selected: this will make the bezier handles collinear (like shift + S) plus make the lengths of both handles the same.
(note: another possible feature would be to make the handle lengths relative, but not the same)
]- "Shift + Click + Drag" on a selected anchor point with the path selection tool: this creates one bezier handle in the direction you drag. This is very useful if you don't want to change the curve of the other side.
With these functions (preferably including the suggestions I've noted), path editing in Illustrator would be much easier.
On the topic of Inkscape's path editing abilities, there is also a way within the program to delete anchor points in two ways:
]The default way is to press "Del," which deletes the anchor points and makes the anchor points around the deleted points attempt to fill the area as close as possible to how it was with points.
]The second way is to press "Ctrl + Del," which deletes the points and does nothing to the surrounding points.
Inkscape's default deletion method is a huge time saver when you simply have a surplus of anchor points; you can the excess and the shape maintains itself (often the result is for the shape to smooth itself out).
I hope that these suggestions are described well enough to be understood. I also hope that, in understanding these potential techniques, you can see their potential usefulness within Illustrator.

    Lee,
All those functions are present in Illustrator. I personally think their interface stinks in some ways, but they are there.
    > "Shift + C" with anchor point selected: this will make the bezier handles of the point move independently of each other.
Convert AnchorPoint Tool. Press Alt to invoke it when the Pen tool is active. Otherwise, switch to it with Shift C. Use it to drag a smoothPoint's handle, and it will convert the point to a cornerPoint, letting you move the handle you click independently.
    > "Shift + S" with anchor point selected: this will "connect" the bezier handles so that moving one side moves the other side relatively (and opposite to each other so that the bezier handles form a straight line).
Again, the Convert tool. Mousedown on an anchorPoint and drag. The point will become a smoothPoint and both handles will extend symmetrically.
There are also buttons to convert selected points between smooth and corner in the Control Panel when anchorPoints are selected.
    > (note: in Inkscape there is no way to make the bezier handles relative and not form a straight line, which is something I know would be useful)
In my musings about Bezier drawing interfaces, I've often imagined a metaphor of "joints" rather than points. (That's really what they are: two adjacent Bezier curves with coincident endpoints.) Joints can be "hinged" or "locked"; "bent" or "straight". They can also be "dislocated". Joints can be locked bent or locked straight, and can be moved either way.
    > "Shift + Y" with anchor point selected: this will make the bezier handles collinear (like shift + S) plus make the lengths of both handles the same. (note: another possible feature would be to make the handle lengths relative, but not the same)
    See second item, above.
    > With these functions (preferably including the suggestions I've noted), path editing in Illustrator would be much easier.
They are there; thier interface is just different.

Not present in AI. (Not associated with a direct point manipulation tool, anyway. Commands like Simplify try to remove points while retaining the shape.)
    > The second way is to press "Ctrl + Del," which deletes the points and does nothing to the surrounding points.
The Delete AnchorPoint Tool. Invoke it by pressing the minus key. Similarly, there is an Add AnchorPoint Tool, invoked by pressing the plus key. By default, the Pen Tool does that automatically to selected paths, but you can turn it off in prefs (unlike the infuriating auto join behavior, which affects UNSELECTED paths.)
    > Inkscape's default deletion method is a huge time saver...I hope that...you can see their potential usefulness within Illustrator
Just about every user of programs like Illustrator, FreeHand, Draw, Canvas know very well the advantages of keyboard modifiers for such things, and all such programs provide them. (Although I do consider AI's treatment considerably more tedious than FreeHand's.)
You need to spend some time looking at the keyboard shortcuts described in the Help files, and carefully practicing them. You need to know how to invoke them while in the process of drawing paths with the Pen.

  • When creating keyframes on timeline, why does it sometimes add bezier handles and sometimes not?

OK, so one of the key steps in my workflow is to do a pass of manual audio 'normalization'. Yeah, I keep getting the feeling that there might be automated tools that could do a better job, but I'm also listening for content.
But what is driving me a little crazy right now is that sometimes, the ctrl-click adds a normal keyframe and other times, it adds a control handle for a bezier curve. This is especially frequent when doing speed ramps, but it's just so inconsistent that it drives me nuts.
I am working on one timeline and halfway through the sequence, it comes to a clip where it ALWAYS adds bezier curves. And when I try to drag the keyframe down, it grabs the bezier handle instead, creating this bizarre S curve.
I just don't know what I'm doing differently in that segment compared to other places. Hundreds, if not thousands of edits like this and I haven't come across a problem like this.
Undo, and do it again causes the same thing.
But one segment over, creating keyframes doesn't create any bezier handles.
    Production Premium CS6

This is helpful as it explains why suddenly there are a few in a row that are bezier.
But it doesn't explain what it is that I did to make them bezier in the first place. It just seems random. I'm just control-clicking on the timeline.
When I get back in the office, I'll check on this a bit more carefully.

  • Can't see the anchor point or bezier handles when editing an effect

Please help! This may be an easy fix, but when editing an effect I can no longer see the anchor point, keyframes, or bezier handles on the timeline image. Specifically, I am keyframing the Brush Position in the Write-on effect, and while I can move the brush position, there is no visual cross-hair on the image nor bezier handles to adjust the curve... every adjustment is therefore a guess as to where the adjustment handle is.
Is there a button that toggles anchor point and keyframe path display? Obviously, not being able to see what you're working on is very frustrating. I tried to click the icon to the left of the Write-on effect bar (4-point square with the selection tool in the upper right), but nothing happens. The write-on effect bar is selected and the Brush Position is in keyframe mode.
Thank you in advance for your help.

I worked with this the other day. Bezier handles and the hot spots are tough to see and the write-on effect is a bit wierd for me. You may have more success placing keyframes at beginning and end of a clip as I had trouble keyframing only part of a clip and still controlling the writing effect. You can then slide the keyframes later to change the duration.
Also, you may want to disable all the other effects while editing this one, as the others keep getting selected instead for me and I end up e.g. moving the image instead of the brush.

  • Is there a way to change the color of the Bezier Curves and points to a different color other than black  I find it perplexing while setting points and curves working on a photo that needs to be separated from it's background for placement on transparent

Is there a way to change the color of the Bezier Curves and points to a different color other than black  I find it perplexing while setting points and curves working on a photo that needs to be separated from it's background for placement on transparent backgrounds. Any thoughts?

Yes. Well, sort of: instead of a "path", set the pen tool to "shape" in the tool properties. Then set the fill colour to transparent, and the stroke colour to the colour you want. You can also set the stroke width.
Not perfect, but at least you can see the path more clearly - the anchor points and handles still remain the default colour. Open the path panel, and right-mouse click the path shape to create a selection based on that shape. The Paths panel menu also allows you to create work paths based on that shape.
Unfortunately when you try to move the handles the black thin outline appears again until you release the mouse button.
This is one of several things that works better in Photoline: in Photoline, once the path is set to a specific colour, editing the path uses the actual colour and stroke width. which is extremely handy for creating path based selection with awkward background colours and/or a high resolution screen. In Photoline the handles and bezier points are also much, much larger, which makes it rather simpler to work with as well - especially on a higher resolution screen. And when selected the handles and points are a clear red with a black outline - again easier to spot and identify. I just works better, in my opinion.

  • Animating a line by moving bezier handles, points

I'm working on a clip that simply moves lines around the stage and makes them bend. It seems very easy to do this, in a sloppy and uncontrolled kind of way, with the record button on, moving to different points along the timeline and moving the handles and points along the lines. But what kind of movement/animation am I creating? No keyframes appear as I adjust the handles and points, and I can't find any parameters that reflect the changes I'm making, and that I might be able to tweak in other ways as I refine the adjustments.
This appears to be too simple or too uninteresting an issue to be covered in any of the multiple references, videos, and tutorials I've seen. Anybody able to shed some light on my line movements?
    TIA!
    dpc

    Hi David
I've been looking for the very same keyframes. I've made a little progress: if your lines are Shapes, select one and go to the Shape tab of the Inspector. Select Geometry. To the right of Control Points is a diamond with a drop-down menu. Choose Show in Keyframe Editor. In the Keyframe Editor you get Shape Animation control. However, the only parameter I can see that is controllable is the timing of your animation changes. Nothing else - at least that I can figure out.

Currently, I can copy ONE tab's url and nothing else (not its name). Or I can bookmark all tabs that are open. However, I'd like to have the ability to select multiple tabs and then copy ALL of the the URLs AND their titles/or copy ALL of the URLs+titles+HTML links? This can be done with the Multiple Tab Handler add on; when I download the add on, I get a message saying that using the add on will disable Firefox's tab features. I prefer to use Firefox features rather than download and use an add on. Is there a way to do this without an add on?

    Hi LRagsdale517,
You should definitely be able to upload multiple files by Shift-clicking or Ctrl-clicking the files you want to upload. Just to make sure you don't have an old version of the service cached, please clear the browser cache and then log in to https://cloud.acrobat.com/files. After clicking the File Upload icon in the upper-right corner, you should be able so select multiple files for upload.
Please let us know how it goes.

  • Selecting and moving many messages not working - try sorting by message classes

I posted this a while back, and have an update now.
I file my sent items.  Call me crazy, but I like to at the end of every quarter, move sent items from that quarter into sub folders.  It's usually 2-4000 items, and ever since I installed OL2010, I have had weird issues when trying to clean my Sent items.
Example:  Select 2000 items, sorted by date from Sent Items.  Drag and drop to my 2009Q4 folder.  It then prompts me "Creating a new item from the selected items could take some time. Are you sure you want to create a new item from these 2000 items?"
So I figured possible Ctrl is stuck down or something, so I right click, Move, select the folder.  Same issue.
I start selecting smaller data sets.  I got to about 50-60 items at a time that I was able to move and not get that message.  I got frustrated and stopped working on it.
This morning, I decided to re-test this.  Same issue presents itself.  So instead, I sorted by message class.  I was able to select 3800 message items.  The remaining items were messages with attachments, text/mobile messages, and calendar invite responses.
It appears that some combination of selecting multiple message classes was triggering my issue.  I suspect the newest of them, the mobile messages to be the issue, so I deleted them, and retried, nope, same error, even selecting only the show message class types.   Would like to see this fixed, of course, and will be sending a frown with the link to this thread as well.
    Chris

I had this problem too.  For me, simply sorting by message class, then finding all the calendar items and moving them first, then going back and doing the rest, allowed me to move them as I liked.   However, its not clear to me that I have
all message classes (not sure what they all are), so it could be there are other message classes that cause problems when you move "mixed classes".   I do think this is an MS Outlook bug, but not clear anyone has reported it to MS.  ;-<
You can prove this by simply selecting a calendar item and a msg, and try moving the two.  You will have this issue.
However, you'd think that MS itself would be a vast user of MS Outlook and if we're discovering this, you'd think MS internal folks are too, so I'm deferring to them to self-resolve.   Until then, I'll just use this workaround.
Definition of "Message classes" for others reading this...  You may have already inferred, but two examples of "classes" are a normal email (.msg) and a calendar item.  You can sort these by clicking on the "icon" field at the top of your email
folder, just to the right of the "bell" (Reminders).   Not sure how to put a .JPG in this posting, since a picture would explain this much better than I can using words.

  • Moving selected objects up and down with keyboard is automaticly applying a colour fill.

    Hi,
My InDesign is strangely applying a colour fill when i move an objects up or down using the directional arrow in my keyboard. If the colour pallet is open. Nudging an object up makes the pallet disappear on the first press. It then reappears on the second press while filling the object (text frame) with black. This is instensly frustrating. How can I stop this? Suggestions would be very appreciated.
I have already reset the preferences.
    Cheers,

    Thanks for your reply.
I fixed the problem by replacing the keyboard!

I have to ask if you reset the prefs uing one of the methods in this thread: Replace Your Preferences If not, there's a good chance you left out one of the files, so please try again using one of the listed methods. And please tell us the OS and your version of ID, including the patch level. Obviously this is not normal behavior. It sounds as if the Swatches panel has focus when you are pressing the arrow keys.

  • Trouble selecting and moving objects near text in Adobe Illustrator? Try this.

It's been 4 years since I left Corel DRAW for Adobe Illustrator. One thing I could never get used to is the crazy way text has an impenetrable invisible sheet over it making it hard to select objects near or behind it.
With Corel DRAW I was used to be able to select text by simply clicking on the visible area of the text. Selecting stuff behind the text by clicking between letters or right next to a decender was never a problem. But Illustrator is a different story.
Tonight I finally found a way to make selecting text in Illustrator behave more like Corel DRAW.
    I wrote it up here: http://www.johnstanowski.com/blog/trouble-selecting-and-moving-objects-near-text-in-adobe- illustrator-try-this/
    Just thought I'd share!

It's not spam, but thanks for assuming.
I was up really late writing that blog post. Posting a link was the quickest way to share and be able to go to bed.
Plus it's rather lengthy. I thought that would be rude to use an Adobe forum for my articles.
If you saw my blog you will have seen there's not much going on there at all, and no calls to action to hire me. I don't have anything to gain by getting traffic.
And, yeah, layers work for selecting, but that slows you down. Who would want to look away from their work to find and select a layer when they're trying to tweak positions of objects? Layers suck for selecting quickly.
And there must be something wrong with me but I find using Type Object Selection by Path Only by itself hard to use. I'd really just like to click on the text itself rather than an invisible hairline you have to probe to find.
Here's the post. I hope people who had trouble like me find it helpful.
Do you have trouble selecting objects near Point Type in Adobe Illustrator? You’ve been there. You want to select an object. Problem is, it’s really close to piece of Point Type. All too often we try to select objects that wind up being unreachable because they lie too close to a piece of Point Type, which we wind up selecting instead. Luckily, after years of angst, I discovered a solution.
Point Type in Adobe Illustrator is funny. There’s this invisible “shield” around it. This shield is much larger (at least it seems that way) than the text itself. It prevents you from selecting objects behind text by clicking between letter and words. This shield is particularly meddlesome with lowercase letters and decenders because we think surely we can click on that blue box (or whatever) because it seems far enough away from that Point Type. But the lowercase “g” in the Point Type’s territory.
Okay, now that we know we’re talking about the same thing, let’s move on to the solutions.
Step 1. Check ‘Type Object Selection by Path Only’ in Preferences
You’ll find this option in Preferences/Type. Click it and that nasty text shield goes away. But there’s a price to pay. With this option activated, the only way you can select your text is by clicking on the text path, a super, tiny, thin baseline thingy under all the letters, but above decenders. It’s really hard to grab. To do it right you need to slowly approach the text path with your cursor. When you’re right over it, Illustrator will let you know by adding a small black square to your cursor. Now, you can click, hold and move your text. But this workflow can really slow you down and break your rhythm, maybe even more so with it turned off.
Step 2. Add the ‘Outline Object’ Effect
Select your Point Type and, from under the Effects Menu/Path/, select Outline Object. This effect does something really sweet to text in Illustrator: it lets your Point Type objects be treated as if their were converted to Outlines. You can still edit the text, but as far as selecting it, Illustrator now considers it outlines and shapes instead of a text object. Basically, it now considers the Path of the text to be the text itself! Now, since we’ve already checked ‘Type Object Selection by Path Only’ we can now click on the text to select it. Just the text. Not the baseline, not the wacky invisible shield surrounding it.
And now… you can select things behind the text by clicking between words and letters. And the ONLY way to select Point Type is to click on the visible parts of the text itself! Problem solved.
    Potential Problem:
Too much of a good thing could be a bad thing. Let’s say you have some Point Type set in a very light face and it’s pretty small or you’re zoomed way out. Selecting that text could be a problem since you have to actually click on the text itself. Actually it isn’t that hard, it may just require an extra click to grab it. If you have a set of smaller, light-faced bits of text, you can elect to just not apply the Outline Object effect to these. They’ll get their ‘shield’ back and be easier to click on. And since they’re so small, they don’t pose a problem with selecting things behind them anyway.
Applying this technique to your old files
Now that you’ve learned this awesome new way to work around type in Illustrator, you may be anxious to open yesterday’s project and get back to work. But you may be not be looking forward to applying the Outline Object effect to each and every piece of type. For this you can use Illustrator’s “Select Same” feature. Select one piece of text. Then from the Select Menu click on Object/Text Objects. Now ALL of your text objects will be selected, and you can apply the Outline Object effect to all of them at once!
That’s it. If you build ads or work with a lot of type in Illustrator, you’re about to be able to work a lot faster… and happier.

  • Selecting and Moving Groups in iPhoto 6

This problem only started happening after upgrading to iPhoto 6 and the new iLife suite. In prior versions, I never encountered this problem regardless of the version of the system software (Panther or Tiger).
When I go to the iPhoto Library on my G5 Tower running Panther with iPhoto 6, and create a folder or slideshow and then attempt to move continuous groups of images into the folder, either by clicking on a single image, then hold down the SHIFT key and click a continuous group or OPTION to select discontinuous images and then try to drag them into the newly created folder, action is not allowed. Since iPhoto 6, I cannot perform this basic operation. The application will not allow me to drag a group of seelcted images into a folder or slideshow. I MUST drag each photo individually. Not a good prospect.
One work around (but illogical to this problem) is to select a group of images and then select "New Album from Selection" under the FILE menu, however that is not a true solution to broken software, it is merely a work around. And it doesn't always work to only create a folder at the moment of wanting to group a whole bunch of images together for a slideshow. Groups do need to be added after the fact of the folders creation.
iPhoto 6 is also incredibly slow and unresponsive on this G5 when it should absolutely rip with speed. I've turned Sharing off but that doesn't seem to help anything. I've tried to look for a setting somewhere in the iPhoto 6 preferences to rebuild the thumbnails and I don't see that setting anywhere.

    Robb:
Where did you install the Helvetica font? In the System font folder or in your User/Library/Fonts folder? In your case I think I'd opt for the User location. Then, with Font Book, activated it, then deactivate and reactivate. See if that won't get it to stick.
You might show this Apple KB document to your IT people. It lists which are the required fonts for Macs : Mac OS X 10.4: Fonts list. Helvetica is listed as one of the system fonts that should not be disabled.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Selecting and moving clips to the right of the TCI

Is there a way to be able to move the editted clips that are to the right of my current TCI, and keep the edits as they are?
I'm looking for a ripple delete with more control if that makes sense. My old editting software had a group tool which alowed me to make a cut and move every edit to the right, to exactly where I wanted to move them. I tried using the track select, but it only works on the track I drag, even if I select more than one track.

I'm not sure what the tool is called--I call it the "A-Tool" because you hit "A" to get it to come up. Anyway, hit "A" on your keyboard and shift+click on the left-most clip that you want to move, and it will select that clip and all clips to the right of it, on all tracks. Then you can move them over. If you don't shift+click, but just click, it will select only the clips on the single track.

  • Audio Track Selection and Moving issue

    Hi there,
I have come across an issue in Premiere Pro since the 7.1 update and we are now using the 7.2 update and the same problem is still present here.
Occasionaly, and increasingly, we are unable to select a clip in Premiere Pro (sometimes this is video but mostly it affects audio). When this happens we cannot do anything to the clip whether it's audio or video. We can;t move it in the timeline, add effects to it or anything. It appears that saving the project then closing and reopening solves the issue but it is happening every 10 minutes so this simply isn't a suitable workaround.
Anyone aware of anything that could be causing this or indeed having the same problem?
Be really grateful for any help provided.
    Cheers,
    Alex

Thanks for your swift reply Jim.
It seems to occur on both my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro though and with various projects so unless all my projects are corrupt then I would have said it was more a software issue. We use a Razar Mouse which I thought might have been causing an issue but it is also present with the Apple trackpad.
Literally all we can do is select the clip and drag in new clips but after that we can't even nudge it up or down, ripple edit, trim, move or anything? Occasionally, it seems to work again but then quickly starts playing tricks on me again. It seems though that adding an effect to the clip seems to solve the issue???
I will try uninstalling Premiere and then reinstalling from CC to see if that helps following the update. Failing that how about Safe Booting my Macs and running the repair permissions operation? Additionally, trashing the preerences in Premiere?
    Cheers for your help.
