Selecting clearest English fonts in Firefox?

We purchased a 13" MBA with OS X Lion for wife, and she complains the blurry fonts are hurting her eyes.
Her 2003 WindowsXP (xfx GeForce 6200 card) on a 23" Sceptre at 1920x1200
with display driver's Advance option selected
for fonts display at 144dpi 150% gives crystal clear font edges.
The MBA fonts all have shadowy edges.
(Genius Bar guy told her to sit farther from the screen.  She will, close to her Windows computer.)
I have tried setting the smoothing off for under 12 point, unchecking the let page override fonts,
and also tried setting large minimums in Firefox,
(and also tried setting to the exact same Firefox fonts and size preferences as the WinXP:
     Proportional: Serif 16
     Serif: Times New Roman
     San-Serif: Arial
     MonoSpace: Courier New  13
     Minimum: None
There are lots of fonts in the list - any better than the defaults?

It looks like you have hinting turned on at work and turned off at home.  Which one looks better is a matter of personal choice.  Some well-hinted fonts, such as MS Arial, appear more readable to me with hinting turned off at sizes <= 8 pt.
Font configuration in Linux can be complicated, but you have much more control over the process than you do with Windows or OSX.  The Fonts wiki is a great starting point but there are many good resources out there like this: http://www.nixer.org/anti-alias-truetype-fonts?page=69.  Maybe the best way to understand how font configuration works is to study the configuration files in /etc/fonts/conf.avail

  • Chinese Font and English Font in one paragraph

    I am working on a book translated from English into Traditional Chinese, using Indesign CS4 under WinXP sp3. In many cases I need to put English words among Chinese Characters. I set up Character Styles to apply the English Fonts I want, then doing word by word manually. Besides of the slow speed, it's easy to make mistakes doing by hand. I desperatly want to find a way to set up PARAGRAPH STYLES that I can specify both Chinese and English Fonts in a same paragraph stye. Will be very apprecited if someone please teach me how to get it.

    Yes it can be done in CS4.  I am doing a billingual book in Chinese and English.  What you can do is select the paragraph,
    1. Open "Paragraph styles", double click - "Basic Paragraph", Select "Basic Character Formats", Change the Font to a Chinese Character (e.g. SimSun and the size is 12)
    2. Don't close the box, then select "GREP Style", select "New GREP Style", click "Apply Styel" and Select "New Character Style"
    3. a New Character Style Box comes up, then select "Basic Character Formats" and select the English Character (e.g. Arial and the size is 14), then OK.
    4. Will back to Paragraph styles box, then click "To Text" and select "Wildcards" and select "Any Letters", then click OK. It is done!!
    I tried many ways before, and how I am getting used to it.  Remember, if you have many different styles need to be set, (for example: Title (with both languages), contents (with both languages), you can set different Character's Name for different purposes when the "New Character Style" box comes up.

    We do our best. And if we fall short, well we gave it our best shot.
    Okay. In the interests of being completely clear:
    I have already tried this. Several times. This procedure will change the default for any of the fields that I place by hand. It does not change the default for any of the fields placed by the Wizard. I was unable to find a solution to the problem in any of the manuals, books, or on-line forums, which is why I posted here as a last resort. This leads to two conclusions:
    A. Your advice is incorrect
    B. There is a problem with my installation of Acrobat
    I will assume that A is not the correct conclusion. I will therefore try a re-install of my software to see if this clears up the problem. There have been other issues with other Adobe software on my machine that a re-installed has fixed nicely. Luckily, I don't have to do this at all often.

  • How to make fonts in firefox look prettier? For example like in sleipnir

    Hello,
    I wonder if there is a way to make fonts in firefox look smooth and easy to read?
    I've tried using Sleinpir browser (http://www.fenrir-inc.com/us/sleipnir/) which has aimed to provide smooth and readable text and almost every piece of text looks just better and more pleasant to read.
    I've tried almost every setting both in Options dialog and in about:config (under gfx.font filter).
    Enabling rendering via directwrite helped a lot, but it's still nothing compared to Sleipnir.
    Here are some screenshots:
    Default firefox - http://s5.postimg.org/8ifmq7u7p/ff_default.png

    Sleipnir - http://s5.postimg.org/5w049a305/sleipnir_default.png
    So is there a way to make fonts look this pretty in firefox? Is there any iniciative to make FF capable of such thing?
    Thanks a lot
    (EDIT: I've even tried instaling gdi++ https://code.google.com/p/gdipp/ alternative renderer for windows, but it doesn't seem to make any change in firefox)

  • How to make the fonts in Firefox sharper so there more like the fonts in Google Chrome?

    I'm currently in the process of moving from Google Chrome to Firefox, and I noticed that the fonts in Firefox are allot more smoother then what they are in Google Chrome, is there anyway to make the Firefox fonts look as sharp as what the fonts are in Google Chrome?

    This article has some suggestions for fixing bad-looking fonts: '''[[Fonts look blurry]]'''
    There are also some improvements coming in Firefox 7, which is currently available for testing on the [http://www.firefox.com/channel Aurora channel]. (It will be released to the beta channel in a few days, and will become the new stable release six weeks from now.)
    If you're interested in the technical details, [https://blog.mozilla.com/nattokirai/2011/08/11/directwrite-text-rendering-in-firefox-6/ this article] has some in-depth information and some more preferences you can tweak.

    Off the cuff, bets are you have a broken SFNT Spline Font file, that is, somebody's been at the tables that lay out the type in the line. Trying to figure out what's the matter with a font file from an unknown source without being able to determine the state of the tables in the font file is tough troubleshooting. In general, type should be treated as any other application program - you buy a licence, you get support, you get upgrades with bug fixes and beautiful new features. Would that it worked that way.

  • Non english fonts

    I have an iBook G4 running 10.4.8. For some reason, it will not print non-English fonts. As an example, I have New Peninim installed. Fontbook recognizes and verifies it. When I set that as the font in Textedit, it shows the text I type in but it does not show it in that font, which is Hebrew, but shows it in an English Font style. It does the same thing with most any other non-English font except for Cyrillic fonts, which it will show. Any ideas?

  • How should I organize and disable non-english fonts.

    I'm a graphic designer and I'm having trouble organizing all of these random hebrew/japanese/chinese fonts that I never use.
    I don't want to screw up my system, but I also don't want to scroll through 200 fonts every time I want to find one.
    Is there an easy way I can find all of the non-english fonts and disable them?
    Fontbook freezes and crashes all the time for me, so I've been using Suitcase Fusion free trial for a few days and disabled a bunch of fonts through it. Though, it prevents me from disabling anything considered a "System Font" which is fine, only having the necesccary non-english fonts is okay, I just don't want 75% of my font list in my adobe applications to be un-usable fonts.
    I guess my problem is that by default, some fonts are pre-disabled on OS X, and should I run into problems, I want a way to easily re-enable these fonts if I need to. Also, since I've disabled so many fonts, I dont' know what ones are enabled by default. How would I go about restoring all of my fonts?
    I think it'd be nice to be able to sort all of the fonts by what language they're in. But I don't know what language the font is because I don't speak those languages. Another problem is that you can't organize local fonts in Suitcase. I think using fontbook would be my best option for this, before switching back to Suitcase for regular use, but I still have the problem of restoring my already disabled fonts correctly, and figuring out which fonts are in what language. Could anyone help me out with this?

    PS Here is a rough list of fonts provided with OS X intended for use only with particular non-Latin scripts:
    Arabic :  al bayan, baghdad, damascus, decotype naskh, geeza pro, nadeem

    hi...
    my problem is i want to display both Hindi and English font together in a single text object...
    the data is retrieved from Database in detail section...
    is there any font which supports both Hindi and English font for single text object...
    help me...

    hi Vinayak,
    If I understand your requirement, your field has full length word.
    Now we should split this field into 3 parts.
    Please Create 3 formulas.
    Part1
    stringvar s1;
    s1:= left({field}, InStr({field},"("));
    s1;
    Part2
    stringvar s2;
    s2:= Mid({field},InStr({field},"(")+1 ,InStr({field},")")- InStr({field},"(") -1);
    s2;
    Part3
    stringvar s3;
    s3:= Mid({field}, InStr({field},")"));
    s3;
    Now Place  a Text box in required section. Drag these 3 formula fields into the Text box.
    Right Click the Part2 and apply mangal font.
    Right Click the Part1, Part 3 and apply Arial font.
    I have tried this and implemented successfully. Please let me know if you still face any issue.

  • English font "Ostrich" not visible in german pages.

    Hi
    I have a MacBook Pro, August 2013 and yosemite and latest version of pages.
    I have installed a free font named "Ostrich Sans". But in pages this font and a lot of others from the font collection are not visible, I suppose because they are english fonts. How can I activate these fonts?
    Thanks a lot!!
    Simone

    There is no German Pages they are all the same Pages, and there is no such thing as an "English" font.
    It either has the Latin letters, which it does, or it has a non-Latin set and even then practically all non-Latin fonts include the Latin.
    Look further down the list, Apple has a couple of different categories for the fonts. Also since Ostrich is an extremely thin font it can be hard to see in the list. I see it in all versions of Pages.
    Do you see Ostrich in TextEdit?
