Selecting color layer should select its mask

In older versions of Photoshop (at least until CS3), clicking on a solid color, gradient or pattern layer in the layer palette selected its mask. In CS5, it doesn't select the mask anymore.
This is inconsistent with the adjustment layer behavior, where the mask is automatically selected, and does not make sense since there is no "image" area that can be edited like normal layers.
It's a little thing but you can't believe how many time I got the "this layer must be rasterized" dialog box since moving to CS5.

OK. I see your point about the eyedropper. I guess I'll have to aim better.
The double border should appear around the Fill layer icon to indicate that it is selected. That would make it consistent with normal layers.
Personally, I would prefer if, when you click on the layer name in the Layers panel, the option that was previously selected for that layer would be selected again (layer color, layer mask or vector mask). If you want to change it, click on the appropriate icon.
On a related note, is there a way to add a vector mask without first adding a layer mask?

  • How to create a selection or mask from a Selective Color layer

    Hi. I was wondering if it is possible to get a selection/mask out of a Selective Color Layer.
    For instance lets say I have a complicated photo and I put a Selective Color layer on.  I then pick Red and start adjusting. I can see the effect and how it changes the red and how it falls off in the photo. Is it at all possible to create a selection or a mask based off of that effect?
    Thank you

    You can try this.  Once you get your selective color adjustment layer the way you like it, change it's blending mode to difference.  Add a B&W adjustment layer above that then a curves or levels adjustment layer above that.  Use the curves or levels adjustment layer to give the image more contrast by adjusting the top white values.  This will produce  an image that you can then make a selection from from the channel pallet.

  • Action written in CS4 won't run correctly in Elements 11 - specif. the "selective color" layer

    I created an action using Adobe Photoshop CS4, and it runs correctly in CS4.  When I save and load the action into Elements 11,  there is a problem with the selective color layer.  The selective color layer shows up in the layer stack along with the expected message that it can't be edited b/c it was created in the full version of Photoshop. However, the layer itself does not have any color/changes in it.
    In Photoshop, the selective color layer makes the photo look pink.  When I run the action in Elements11,the selective color layer does absolutely nothing to the photo.  I do have the eye turned "on" to view the layer, and it's set at the correct blending options & opacity (normal, 100%).
    If I run the action in Photoshop, save the file with all the action-created layers, and reopen the file in Elements 11, THEN the selective color layer shows its correct pink color.  But when I run the action as a stand-alone action in Elements11, it does not.
    Can anyone offer help as to why this is happening? Is there something special I need to do to make the action work correctly in Elements 11? My understanding was that it should RUN and create the layers correctly, although some of them will not be editable in Elements11. However, as it stands, it is not creating them with the correct color.
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    You probaly need to record the action in a little different way in photoshop cs4 to get the selective color adjustment layer to work.
    Try something like this:
    1. In photoshop cs4 add an selective color adjustment layer, but don't do any adjustments and stop recording the action.
    2. Undo the selective color adjustment layer and then double click on on the selective color adjustment layer step in the actions panel
       and when the dialog opens set your adjustments and click ok.
    Now it should work in pse 11:

    Photoshop CS 6 - image -canvas - make double matte - select color - if I select wrong color, how do I change to a new color, right now it won't change to the new color I select, WHY?????

    Hi, The options bar shows sample size 101 by 101 Average. That was my problem. When I was troubleshooting in order to try to explain to you what was happening, I noticed that when I sampled my models teeth, it gave me a color a bit lighter than her lipstick as my foreground color in my tool box. That started me thinking in the correct way. I didn't realize that my sample size had somehow gotten switched from point sample to 101 by 101 average. I appreciate the help. Thank you.

  • Selecting top layer (after selecting all layers)

    Here's an odd thing: I found that
    app.activeDocument.activeLayer = app.activeDocument.layers[0];
    Works fine (as you would expect) in selecting the topmost layer, but fails to do just that after all layers have been selected.
    var id98 = stringIDToTypeID( "selectAllLayers" );
    var desc25 = new ActionDescriptor();
    var id99 = charIDToTypeID( "null" );
    var ref19 = new ActionReference();
    var id100 = charIDToTypeID( "Lyr " );
    var id101 = charIDToTypeID( "Ordn" );
    var id102 = charIDToTypeID( "Trgt" );
    ref19.putEnumerated( id100, id101, id102 );
    desc25.putReference( id99, ref19 );
    executeAction( id98, desc25, DialogModes.NO );
    // uncomment this to select the second layer and the code will work
    // app.activeDocument.activeLayer = app.activeDocument.layers[1];
    app.activeDocument.activeLayer = app.activeDocument.layers[0];
    Anyone know why this is the case?

    No idea why it should do this, but here is an alternative...
    selectTopLayer();
    function selectTopLayer(){
    var ref = new ActionReference();
    ref.putEnumerated( charIDToTypeID('Dcmn'), charIDToTypeID('Ordn'), charIDToTypeID('Trgt') );
    var count = executeActionGet(ref).getInteger(charIDToTypeID('NmbL'));
    var ref2 = new ActionReference();
    ref2.putIndex(charIDToTypeID('Lyr '), count);
    var desc = new ActionDescriptor();
    desc.putReference(charIDToTypeID('null'), ref2 );
    desc.putBoolean( charIDToTypeID( 'MkVs' ), false );
    try{
    executeAction(charIDToTypeID('slct'), desc, DialogModes.NO );
        }catch(e){}

  • Selective color too pale/washed out

    I'm running photoshop CS3 in a macbook pro under windows xp, and I want to add color to something in my picture. I used "selective color" (Layer > adjustments > selective color) to add color to a whitish-looking robe that is worn by a character that I created in photoshop earlier, but even when I move the slider to +100 % the color is still too washed out (will add images later).
    I know from experience using Photoshop CS 3 in my old laptop (a HP Compaq Presario X6000 running windows XP)  that to get the depth of color I want in my character's robe, I shouldn't have to move the slider all the way to +100 %. Is there any way to fix this so I can get the same color depth I got when I used my old laptop?
    P.S. When I choose "selective color" a dialogue box comes up. I left the settings in this dialogue box as they are seen in the image, and clicked "ok".
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks, your answer helped me. My "selective color" was set to "relative" (I had completely forgotten about that!) Once I changed it to "absolute", I got my color depth back that I used to have when I was using my old laptop. Thanks again!

  • IMPOSSIBLE TO SELECT SPOT COLOR LAYER AS I DID WITH CS2

    Hello, I'm a french user (sorry for my english). I'm used to proceed with jobs that are using PSD files with spot colors layers. With AI CS2,
    a PSD file with spot color layer I was able to select each layer to change its color, its transparency or its order. With CS4, all spot channels are embedded in a single layer. It's really a problem for me. May somebody help me. Thank you. Pierre-Yves

    Yes, in CS4 it is all one layer in CS 5 it is on different layers if they are spot channels.
    This is CS 5 so you have to either go back or upgrade to CS 5 if this is an issue.

  • What is the purpose of the chain (lock symbol) between a solid color layer and its vector mask?

    What is the purpose of the chain (lock symbol) between a solid color layer and its vector mask in the layer panel when creating shape layers with a shape tool? I'm just curious when locking or unlocking the solid color layer and its vector mask can make a difference.

    I don't understand what you said and your shape layer looks different then mine using CS5.
    When the chain is deselected, I can't do anything with the move tool on the shape layer. This is the only difference I can find. Making the solid color uniform or not doesn't change anything.
    Your example shows that you moved the position of the solid color, how did you do that? I can create a solid color layer and change its uniform look by applying an effect like gradient but I can't move the solid color itself around. How is this possible?

  • Question about HSL Develop Controls vs. Photoshop Selective Color

    Im an advanced Photoshop user and I enjoy shooting landscapes, macros and abstracts. Ive just started to experiment with Lightroom and have used it to process several hundred shots from a recent trip to the California Coast.
    Even though my usage of the next Develop controls in Lightroom is still pretty limited, I find the new Basic Develop and Tone Controls to be very intuitive to use and Im getting better results than I could from Adobe Camera Raw 3.7 and earlier. Therefore, kudos to the Lightroom team.
    But, I also have some questions regarding the HSL controls and what seems to be an omission of some useful functionality. To help with framing my question lets assume that we have shot of a waterfall in the forest. The waterfall is in partial shade and the rest of the scene is in partial to full sun. Also the histogram for image indicates that a blend of several bracketed images isnt needed to deal with the overall dynamic range within the scene.
    If I was processing this shot in Photoshop, I would likely adjust the overall White Balance / Exposure / Black Clip / Contrast / Brightness in Camera Raw and then finish the image within Photoshop. Since the water of the waterfall described above is in the shade, it will likely have a color cast relative to the White Balance that I set for the rest of the image that is full sun.
    With Photoshop, I would often set a couple of sample points and then use a Selective Color layer to correct for the color cast in the whites of the water and to neutralize the blacks in the shade. I would also sometimes increase the amount of black in the Selective Color Blacks tab to enhance the image contrast. These adjustments could have layer masks associated with them but for this example lets assume that the dont need any mask. Thus, I would hope that I could accomplish the same type of globally based whites and blacks color cast removal within Lightroom but I cant seem to find a way to accomplish this.
    With Lightroom, I see that there are a set of HSL controls that should be able to handle much of what Selective Color could handle on a global level within Photoshop but I dont see any controls to deal with the Whites or Blacks. Am I missing something? Is there a way to accomplish the type of correction that I described above with Lightroom or am I going to have to take the image out to Photoshop and use Curves and/or Selective Color?
    Dave

    Fred, Richard - Thanks for responding.
    I've tried the TAT tool but it only controls the colors controlled by the sliders in the HSL palette. Therefore, it doesn't seem to have any affect on the hue of the whites or blacks in a picture.
    Regarding selective editing, I realize the the controls within Lightroom are global but unless I use a Layer Mask the Selective Color functionality within Photoshop is also global. That is, if I change the hue of the blacks then all blacks are affected. Hence, it seems to me that the HSL controls within Lightroom and the CYMK controls within Selective color can be used to do much the same thing. The big difference is that the Selective Color control set include the ability to adjust blacks and whites but this isn't included within Lightroom.
    I also posted my message in the ACR forum as ACR 4.0 is going to include the same set of controls that the Develop module in Lightroom contains. Someone there suggested that I might be able to use the split toning controls to warm up the shadows and I will give this a try. I also plan to post in the Feature Requests Forum.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Selective color correction "Lightroom"

    I have two suggestions for Lightroom.
    1.) Please absolutely for the next update an improved function for a selective color correction. Select with a pipette the color and over an input window the information selectively work on. That One should be able to determine sphere of influence still additionally. At present this is not yet satisfying. (see and compares, Photoshop PlugIN: aurelon "coco", or Software DxO Optics Pro v4.5).
    2.) Information window that comparably as in Photoshop the values for RGB 0-255 indicates.

    I am working with RGB images trying to adjust to get colors in gamut and to maintain detail before converting to CMYK.
    If you are trying to bring totally oversaturated RGB colors into the CMYK gammut, then ideally you will have to learn about channel mixing. It may be necessary to reproduce the Cyan channel (Red) by finding detail from other channels. Selective color, as you've discovered can only take you so far.
    Luminosity blended Hue/saturation adjustments taken to low opacity is another high end tip, and work around. If you cant deal with the complexity of masking and channel mixing

  • Select Next Layer

    Hi,  im having some trouble with an action im writing.  I have a group,  with a layer mask applied to it and about 50 places images.  I want to select the next later,  Export and then the Next and so on.  But the standard select next layer only select the next 'Group'  and not the laters within that group!  Any ideas?

    c.pfaffenbichler, thanks
    Action,  if its possible via an action.  This is what im trying to do.
    Current Layer - Make Visible (working)
    Export as png (working)
    Turn current layer visability off (working)
    Select next layer below (these layers are in a group and masked at the group folder level)
    At this point it selects the group below and not the layer below

  • Select Color Panel - Color Picker

    The select color panel should allow you to select a color from any part of the screen, not just the spectrum in the color panel itself.
    This would make local adjustments MUCH easier, especially in the case where there are tonal gradations of an object.

    Click in the panel and drag onto the image to get the color picker.

  • Selection color

    For a  B&W photo, can the selecting color be changed to say red?

    OK. That’s pretty obscure.  Are you talking about converting a colour image to B&W?  If so, you can use Select > Color Range to select the reds in the image, but I suspect that is not exactly what you are trying to achieve.  If you provide more information, we’ll do our best to help.

  • Select color on clipping mask

    When I have created a clipping mask and want to select a color from the layer behind I have to select the layer to get the color and then go back to the clipping mask to use it.
    I have seen Tutorial on the net where they dont seem to have to do that.
    So what am I doing wrong here?

    What are the Eyedropper Tool settings in the Options Bar?
    Do the top Layers hide the base Layer of the Clipping group completely?
    Could you please post a screenshot with the Layers Panel visible?
