Selecting Colors/Areas of an Image (Best Way to)

Greetings,
I have a question about selecting sections of an image to copy or edit, and the best/easiest way to do it. I've been using the Pen to draw a line around the edge of the section(s) I want to edit, than tidy up the lines, convert it to a selection, and go from there. But this can often take a very long time.
So I was wondering if there was a better, faster and/or easier way to do this, or if using the Pen tool is probably the best way?
I'll use
this image
as an example (for lack of a better example image). Perhaps I want to take the dark blue area of the skirt, chest and feet and edit them to a different color (maybe I want to turn them red, for instance). Obviously the image has shading so not all of the colors are exactly the same, so the Magic Wand wouldn't help much.
To edit these sections, would using the Pen tool to drag a line around the edges and convert it to a selection be the best way, or is there another better way to do this?
It may be a stupid question, but I just thought I'd ask just in case there was a simpler way for me to go about editing my images.
And if it makes any difference, I have Photoshop CS2.

The Quick Selection tool (in the same button as the magic wand, accessed by dragging the mouse over the magic wand button) works nicely to do this operation. But you need CS3 as it's not included in CS2.
Make the brush size around 7 pixels, drag in the dark blue areas with the "add to selection" option. Then use the "subtract from selection" option to remove any of the red or light blue spots that got selected.

  • Hi, Please help. I accidentally deleted my entire Iphoto Library. I used Stellar Phoenix 4.1 and I do believe that I recovered all. I recovered to "My Passport" for Mac External HD. Files are all mixed up, best way to import back?

Hi, a couple days ago, I was orgainizing my Iphoto libray. Then, I thought that I was emptying my trash on Iphoto. (the ones I deleted when orgainizing) after hitting are you sure button, I realized that it was 209 files with 18,000+ photos. So I frantically stopped iphoto from "saving critical information" thinking If I left it open I could copy all my files over to (I beleive somewhere in finder under pictures?) I thought, but it most have been under the applications folder. Well this is where I really messed up. So after saving every file to that section, and everything was normal again on iphoto, I decided to make space and delete them from where I put them. So instead of selecting each file indivually, I used the select ALL button. Only to find that it deleted EVERYTHING. Iphoto (the file) was apparently at the bottom of the page along with Nikon Transfer, Lightroom 2 and god knows what else. That is when I found a data recovery software program (Stellar Phoenix 4.1mac) 17 hours later it found 159GB. I read enough to know that I HAD to go and buy an external HD. (even though I already own Time Capsule, but I never hooked it up ) was confused about if I could actually use that for this matter so, I just went and bought My Passport an external HD for Mac. Plugged it in, and recovered what looks like all my files (hopefully) did also read enough that I knew NOT to use my computer after this occured.
Now that you all know how I got into this mess, I would like to know the best way to import the files back? Ok I know this sounds easy, but all the files are scattered everywhere on the HD. Is there a way to put them back on my Mac Book Pro that would possibly put them in some kind of order? Date? Image file number? Anything? 18,000 photos to reorgainze is going to be brutal. I can reinstall Lightroom 2, if i can locate where I put the disk. And I also have CS5. Also wondering if the quality of the photo was affected?  I did get them back, so I am not complaining but any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Will be turning on Time Machine and hooking up Time Capsule as well. Should I also use my new HD along with capsule? Any advice on that matter would also be greatly appreciated as well!!!!!
    Thanks, Michelle

  • Change selective color(pixels) of an image.

I want to change the selective color of an image to another desired color. I want to this in pixel's scope. If there is an image with three colors red(FF0000), green(00FF00) and yellow(FFFF00); in this case i want to change the color of red to blue, then the program should change all red pixels to blue(0000FF).
I have to do this in an applet. Till date, i tried to implement the library function getRGB and setRGB but failed to do it completely.
Any help (algorithm, approach, or code) will be appreciated.
    Thanks

Use the class RGBImageFilter. The API documentation has an example of use.

  • Selected color profile for new images from "clipboard" is wrong in CS6

I have given up trying to find the answer to this myself.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Take a screenshot of something in your web browser (macintosh CMD+SHIFT+4) to the clipboard.
    2. Select File > New from the menu. Clipboard should be the selected Preset.
    3. Notice how in CS6 the color profile under "Advanced" is "Display" and NOT "sRGB" — in CS5 it is sRGB.
    4. Paste from the clipboard into your new document and get the color profile mis-match warning if you are in CS6.
It is either not picking the color space of the clipboard properly like it will in CS5, or I am missing something somewhere.
Nothing I do in an attempt to fix this is working. I have sRGB set as my default profile in color settings, and nothing I do changes this setting for the "Clipboard" preset.
I am getting sick of forgetting to manually select "sRGB" every time, opening up a new document sized to my clipboard and then getting the color profle mismatch warning when I paste in the clipboard contents!
I take so many screenshots as I develop websites this is a CONSTANT problem as I am constantly creating new documents from the clipboard to check alignments, zoom in to get color samples, and many other reasons.

That helps a little. It explains why "Display" is selected when I create a new from the clipboard in PS.
The ColorSync profile from a screenshot opened in the Preview App shows up as "Color LCD" in the inspector.
So, I assume what is happening in PS is that the new document is being created in the working color space and my clipboard contents don't match that and therefore causes the warning?
I could see getting a warning if I create a new document from the clipboard in PS and it embeds the "Display" profile within it, and then I try and paste something which has an sRGB (or other) embedded profile, but I was assuming the new document from the clipboard contents would have the same color profile as the clipboard contents.
I just don't get why I get a warning when I create the new document and the very first thing I try and do is paste the clipboard contents into said document.
However, when I select "sRGB" from the dropdown list instead of "Display" in the PS dialogue box it does not give me the mismatch warning.
Although the warning does say my source and destination document are both using the "Display" profile but my working space is sRGB.
The more I think about it, I may have just checked the "Don't show again" box in CS5 if I ever had the same issues and therefore never dealt with that again!
I am going to go read as much as I can about the color profiles in PS. I used to deal with this a lot as a print designer but not so much anymore working in UI design. I only really look into these issues when I get weird color shifts on saved files and things of that nature.
Thanks for taking the time to explain some things!

  • Best way to crossconvert/output 720p24 project

    hi everyone -
i have a finished 720p24 project in FCP 5.1 that i would like to output to tape and also crossconvert to 1080i (HDCAM) for screening purposes. the project is 10-bit RGB in its digital master form.
i have a blackmagic decklink HD pro card, but i was wondering what the bestest way to proceed might be? can i take a quicktime file to a post house for cross-conversion to 1080i, or must i first rent a deck and output to 720p60 on HDCAM or D-5, and then take this tape to a post house with a teranex or alchemist system?
will the crossconverted 1080i version look a lot worse/softer than the 720p version?
thanks for your advice on this.
    G5 Dual 2.7 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

i think i need a 1080i59.94 HD version for this particular screening venue. is this a problem to create? is it an extra step?
Why do you need to? It is possible, I was just curious as to why? That is another option of the Kona 3, I think. Don't quote me...ask a post facility that has one. I'll call my guy too, ask him. I have a Decklink at home.
it will be projected, so i want the image quality to be as good as i can get it.
Going from 720p 23.98 to 1080p 23.98 is really the best you can get. There is no advantage in going to 1080i60 at 59.94. Those extra frames don't equal greater quality. Your footage is 23.98...keep it 23.98.
Now, one advangage of converting your project into the 8-bit uncompressed codec then outputting is in terms of Color Correction. The image will degrade less in an uncompressed codec...for the codec is less "lossy." The way I did it is mainly economical and does fine, but I color corrected in the DVCPRO HD codec, and when rendered, is compressed further than if I was working in an uncompressed environment. So the upconverting, rendering then coloring and outputting might be the better option if you are looking at the best way to retain quality.
Mind you, if your story is compelling enough then people would be hard pressed to notice. They'd be too engrossed in the story. At first 28 DAYS LATER...shot on DV and projected in a movie theater...looked very pixelated and fuzzy...but then I got sucked into the story and really didn't notice. Do what you think is best, and what you can afford to do. Know that people really want a good story above all else. Better quality is good, and in a movie theater I think that it would be noticed, if they looked at it side by side. I gave you options...do with them what you will.
also, do you know how the kona 3 cross-conversion compares with other options such as the teranex xantus or alchemist? i've heard those systems mentioned a lot when it comes to cross/up conversion.
AFAIK those are used for up/down converting SD to HD and HD to SD. Not corss converting. But what do I know? Never gone that route.

  • What is the best way to save an ai file so it can be opened in corel draw

I have an ai file that needs to be opened in corel draw by a client. It needs to remain editable all paths and colors ect.
Whats the best way to save it so it can be.
yes I know corel is not as good as Illustrator but its what they have.

Moving files back and forth between Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW is tricky. There's quite a bit more to it than knowing what version of CorelDRAW the client is using. If the artwork is fairly simple then there shouldn't be any problem with transferring the artwork into CorelDRAW. If the artwork has gradients, transparency effects, a lot of clipping masks, etc. then it's going to be a lot more dicey getting it to import into CorelDRAW properly. In addition to the .AI file you provide, you should give the client a PDF they can view in Adobe Reader or Acrobat so they can proof how the artwork is really supposed to look.
I use Adobe Illustrator CC and CorelDRAW X6 in my work. I've used both applications for over 20 years. I don't consider either application better than the other. They both have their own unique strengths and weaknesses. I'll do a good bit of creative work within CorelDRAW to use certain features Illustrator either lacks or just doesn't do as well. Or I may need to design a really big project at full scale and Corel has a much bigger art board than Illustrator. Most of the time I move a lot of the stuff I created in CorelDRAW over to Illustrator for further refinement or moving it into Photoshop as paths or smart objects or just getting it ready to print (I don't like Corel's color engine even though it has improved in recent years).
Like others have said, you need to know the basics of what the user has -mainly which version of CorelDRAW. The newer versions like the one I'm using can open Illustrator CS5 files. For older versions, you may have to save down to CS2 or even really old versions like Illustrator 8.
CorelDRAW will not support certain Illustrator-dependent effects. For instance, if you apply a gradient to an object outline it will be lost when opened in CorelDRAW. A lot of other effects won't be maintained when opened in Corel unless they are flattened/expanded. Some effects may even have to be rasterized, and that can create other issues. Out of effects that are maintained, some may have to be adjusted. CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator handle things like gradient fills differently and don't understand how to portray gradients from their rival application accurately. Some nice fill that was created in CorelDRAW may have to be tweaked or completely rebuilt when opened in Illustrator.
I get a lot of customer files in CorelDRAW and also a lot in Illustrator. That reason alone makes it necessary for me to have both CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator running on my computer.

  • Best way to create slide show with last photo having links

What are some of the best ways to create a slide show (more like a season greeting flash) with the last photo having links and buttons for the viewer to click?
I already have the code for the slide show. What I need now is how do I reference or point to a keyframe that contains the last slide as the background with buttons and hyperlinks? Perhaps, I also need a way to not showing this slide until the last? How do I do that? This last slide with buttons and links are on it's own layer.
The other route would be to create the buttons and hyperlinks in the AS3 code instead of design time. If so, how do I do on the last slide?

  • Best way to add crystal reports

    Hi All,
I have worked with crystal reprots in past and have done this by adding a DataSet and having this populated with the SQL statement from the database.
I want to have a way where i can add reports to a folder and have the report pulled in to the vb.net application dynamically, so can leave the application as is and not have to keep re-compiling the code and have it done through updates.
what is the best way to do this a system i used to work with used to be able to add 3 files in to a folder . Par . SQL .Rpt
this used to pull the report from the folder and add to the specified menu or submenu.
i have figured out i can either do it through a database table or xml file for adding but need to work out how to get the paramater name and type and add to the form dynamically.
    any help will be appriciated.

Depending on the version of CR you are working with, your best way will be to use InProc RAS. See samples here:

  • What is the best way to copy database from overseas?

    Hello All,
As customer need to migrate their databases(200 databases) to our data center, at this moment, we usually ask customer to send full backup by HDD and then send trn files via FTP, then we restore full backup and apply latest trn files until cutover. However
FTP is not stable, trn files are always broken.
The databases size are 3GB~150GB, trn file size are 1MB to 5GB, especially the big trn files are failed every time, we have set transfer mode to Binary in FTP client, but it still fails.
I have VPN access to their database server, so in this case is there a better way to copy/migrate their databases to our server?
    Customer using Windows 2003 + SqlServer 2008
    We using Windows 2012 R2 + SqlServer 2014
    Appreciate your suggestions/advises.
    Thanks,
    Albert

You are doing it the best way. I would also ship the tlogs via courier if time permits. Note that the tlogs get very large during maintenance operations. You may find that if you continually ship the tlogs via log shipping and stagger the cutover you may
be able to do this in waves.
With this many databases this sort of migration is difficult without downtime.

  • What's the best way to clean the DVD player in a 2007 Macbook Pro?

    Hello All.
Our older MacBook Pro from mid 2007 has not had its DVD Player cleaned.
Now our Redbook DVD'S are "skipping over damaged areas"
What's the best way to clean it?
    Thanx for your advice.

take the files from the dvds and back them up as iso or just the files onto your computer. this way you wont have to rely on the optical drive.
the safest way is to take it into the apple store to clean,
but if there are danages on the DVD, you'll have to somewhere for them to buff it out. some gaming store will do this for you for a charge. You are better off taking the media off of the disks and saving them on your computer or usb stick, so on.
    hope this helps ;-)

  • Best way to print result of query to file from pl/sql?

If I have a query, let's say 'select * form my_table', what's the best way to print it to a file from pl/sql?
Do I have to create a cursor, go through each line, and use some file output function? Or is there some clever way to say 'print this query to file!'

The rest of my procedure (the one generating the query itself) is in PL/SQL. So it needs to be done from there. Any tricks?

  • What's the best way to merge, restore or reconstruct iPhoto and Aperture libraries to resolve images that are not found/offline?

    Hey there, Apple Support Communities.
To start, I'm working on a MBP Retina 15" with a 2.3GHz i7 processor and 16 GB of RAM.  10GB free on a 256GB SS HD.  Attached are two external HDs - one 1TB Western Digital portable drive from 2011, one 2TB Porsche LaCie non-portable drive from 2013; both connected via USB.  All photo libraries in question are on the external drives.
I have Aperture 3.5.1 and iPhoto 9.5.1.  I prefer to work in Aperture.
    The Issue(s)
Over the years, I have accumulated a number of iPhoto libraries and Aperture libraries.  At one point, I thought my WD drive was dying so I purchased the LaCie and copied all libraries over the the LaCie drive.  (Turns out, there's probably an issue with my USB port reading drives, because I can once again see the WD drive and occasionally I can't see the LaCie drive.)
So now I have old version of some libraries on the WD drive, and new versions on the LaCie drive.
When I was moving things, I ran the software Gemini to de-dupe my iPhoto libraries.  Not sure what effect that may have had on my issues.
In my main Aperture library and in some iPhoto libraries, I get the image-not-found badge or exclamation point.  I've dug through the hidden Masters folders in various libraries to find the original image.  In some cases, I have been able to find the original image, sometimes in a different version of the iPhoto library.
    My Question(s)
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
    2.  For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
    3.  Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
TL;DR: Too many iPhoto and Aperture libraries, and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
Thank you!  Let me know if you need add'l info to offer advice.
    With appreciation,
    Christie

That will not be an easy task, Christie.
I am afraid, your cleaning session with Gemini may have actually removed originals. I have never used this duplicate finder tool, but other posters here reported problems. Gemini seems to replace duplicate original files in photo libraries by links, and this way, deleting images can cause the references for other images to break. And Aperture does not follow symbolic links - at least, I could never get it to find original files this way, when I experimented with this.
    1.  For Aperture libraries that have missing originals, is there some magical way to find them, or have they just disappeared into the oblivion?
You have to find the originals yourself. If you can find them or restore them from a backup, Aperture can reconnect them. The reconnect panel can show you, where the originals are supposed to be, so youcan see the filename and make a Spotlight search.
For iPhoto libraries that have missing originals and I have found the original in another iPhoto library, what is the best way to proceed?
Make a copy of the missing original you found in a folder outside the iPhoto library. You can either open the iPhoto library in Aperture and use "File > Locate Referenced file" to reconnect the originals, or simply reimport them. Then Lift&Stamp all adjustments and metadata to the reimported version.
See this manual page on how to reconnect originals:  Aperture 3 User Manual: Working with Referenced Images  (the paragraph:  Reconnecting Missing or Offline Referenced Images)
Are there quirks to merging iPhoto and Aperture libraries (by using the Import->Library) feature that I should be aware of?
References images will stay referenced, managed will remain managed. You need to unhide all hidden photos in iPhoto - this cannot be done in Aperture.
and not all the original pictures can be found by the libraries anymore, though some originals still do exist in other libraries.  Steps/process to fix?
That is probably due to Gemini's replacing duplicate originals by links, and your best cause of action is to fix this before merging the libraries. Reconnecting can be done for your iPhoto libraries in Aperture.

  • What would be the best way to change the color of part of this image? (image attached)

I am on XP using PS CS4.
Please see the photograph below. I would like to change the color of the shirt/apron of this lady & I was wondering what the best way is to do that. I know if I try replace color, the white bowls change color as well. In the past I have isolated parts of images using paths, but I wanted to know if that was the most efficient way. Maybe masking is the answer. I just wanted to hear from the pros
    Thank you.

    You're welcome!

Refine Mask should be available whenever a mask is targeted.
