Selecting, Cutting and Dragging...

Hello,
I am quite new on InDesign and have a problem.
Recently i am working on a book which is consisting of severel PDF  files. I place these files into InDesign and do some trimming like  resizing them or masking some text fields.
The problem is I cannot choose, for instance, a field which contains a  text. Just like in old program "Paint", do we have chance to select any  field with a simple rectangular frame and include the selected field in  that frame so to move it anywhere (Believe me not too far away just a  couple of inches).
I tried several ways to do it but none of the attempts helped.
Such a great program must have something so simple for this I believe but I couldn't figure it out.
Thanks for the answers.

If you didn't mean edit the text you can still copy, crop and shift.
If I understand what you're trying to do correctly my approach would be this:
Place the PDF where you want most of it
Copy the PDF and then "paste in place"
Crop to the area you want to shift
Shift that part of it
Use a white box as necessary to mask where it came from.

  • There are no songs in my itunes library found when selecting autofill, and dragging songs into device does not do anything now what?

    when i hit auto fill under music it just says Itunes cannot add any song to "___'s Iphone" because no songs in your itunes library could be found.
    there clearly is an anbundance of music that I have been syncing all the time, I have not the slightest idea why it just stopped working, also when I try to manually click and drag songs into the device tab in itunes, NOTHING happens.
    any suggestions on how to fix it

    I have a very smilar problem. Recently imported my modest music collection from my old G3 CRT to a new Mac Mini by linking the two machines and then dragging the music library and songs over.
    iTunes works fine in normal screen mode, music library is all there and all songs are visible and play but when trying to play back with the Apple Remote it opens up iLife ok and lists the playlists. Click on 'Songs' it says that there are no songs in the library. Click on any playlist then it goes to 'Shuffle Songs' then 'Error has occured' It can't seem to see the music library.
    I put this question on iTunes and Mac Mini discussion and got:
    Some other people have had similar problems, you might see if the suggestions in this thread help:

    Tried but as yet no success. Tried re-naming the iTunes Music Library.xml and also deleting com.apple.frontrow.plist from Library and letting it rebuild without any luck.
    Any suggestions out there as how to resolve this? Thanks in advance.

  • Project Window - unable to select clips and drag or rearrange

    Call me dumb, but I've tried everything to get a clip to drag/move/rearrange within the project window.
    I've worked with Mac now for 3 years and it's gotta be simple!!!!
    Deb

    are you trying to move the clip or the thumbnail???. Be careful with this, the thumbnail displays by default 5 seconds of movie, but it is a continuous movie, although there are vertical bars. In order to move it you will have either to "split before selected clip", or copy and paste, etc., meaning editing.
    You can change the length of the thumbnail, down to .5 sec and up to 30 sec. using the bar in the lower right.

  • Double-click and drag don't open image files

    Hi,
    I'm having problems loading images in Preview and Adobe apps (CS1).
    From Finder, I can double click to open an image in Preview but it only opens the first image, and won't load more than one. I've tried changing the preferences to "open groups of images in the same window" or "open all images in one window." Neither solve the problem.
    My adobe apps won't open a file when I double click it from the finder at all. I have to use the "open" command from within the application to open an image file.
    I am a designer and photographer trying to browse groups of images at once and this is driving me crazy! I have tried copying over different preference files from my old computer (a powerbook G4), and I'm wondering if I either failed to copy the right one or copied something that is interfering with the shortcut actions.
    The interesting part is, that the same actions are working fine for other kinds of files -- for example, I can open multiple word documents by double clicking their icons in Finder.
    Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you.
    Amy Hengst

    Hi Amy
    What kind of files are these? If I wanted to open multiple images in Preview (be they BMP, JPEG, PSD, whatever) I would select them and drag onto the Preview icon in the Dock which opens the first image in a single window with the remaining images in a 'thumbnail drawer' to the right (like you get with big PDF documents).
    On the other hand if I double-click, 10 to 1 it would launch Photoshop which I use as an image editor only, not an image manager or viewer. You can of course change the application which any document uses to open it, with the Get Info window. But if you use more than one application (as I do - PS to edit, Preview to just view), then click-and-drag onto the Dock might be your best bet.

  • Multiple Selection in JTree, Drag & Drop

    Hi everybody,
    I was wondering if anyone knows how to implement Multiple Selection Drag and Drop in a JTree. I know that there used to be a bug in jdk 1.3 that would allow it, but I suspect 1.4 fixed that. I've implemented Single-selection just fine, but I'm trying do Multiple selection by drawing a selection rectangle and selecting whatever nodes are contained within that rectangle. So far I've implemented it by adding a MouseListener to my JTree, finding which rows are intersected by the rectangle and calling addSelectionRow() to add the TreePaths.
    Is there an easier way to multiple selection now that the bug of 1.3(I hope) has been fixed?

    Okay, now I've implemented the changes in the DragGestureListener, DragSourceListener and DragTargetListener in order to make Multiple Selection possible, however I want to select multiple items the same way Windows Explorer does by:
    1. pressing the left-mouse button & dragging a "selection" rectangle which selects all the nodes contained within that rectangle.
    2. then drag and drop is accomplished by pressing one of the selected nodes and dragging it (along with it's other selected siblings) to the destination.
    In order to accomplish this I added into the Constructor of my JTree extending class this code:
    public class MyTree extends JTree {
    private static int x1, y1, x2, y2;
    public MyTree(DefaultMutableTreeNode rootNode){
    // Other Constructor stuff...
    this.addMouseMotionListener( new MouseMotionListener() {
    public void mouseDragged(MouseEvent e) {
    x2 = e.getX();
    y2 = e.getY();
    repaint();
    public void mouseMoved(MouseEvent e){     }
    this.addMouseListener(new MouseAdapter(){
    boolean dontRelease = false;
    public void mousePressed( MouseEvent e){
    x1 = e.getX();
    y1 = e.getY();
    int[] rows = getSelectionRows();
    boolean dropSel = true;
    if (rows != null){
    for (int i = 0; i < rows.length; i++){
    Rectangle rect3 = getRowBounds(i);
    if (rect3.contains(x1, y1)){
    dropSel = false;
    dontRelease = true;
    if (dropSel){
    for (int i =0; i < rows.length; i++)
    removeSelectionRow(i);
    public void mouseReleased( MouseEvent e){
    x2 = e.getX();
    y2 = e.getY();
    repaint();
    if (dontRelease == false) {
    Rectangle rect2 = new Rectangle(Math.min(x1, x2),
    Math.min(y1, y2), Math.abs(x1-x2), Math.abs(y1-y2));
    int rowCount = getRowCount();
    for (int i = 1; i < rowCount; i++) {
    Rectangle rect3 = getRowBounds(i);
    if ((rect2.contains(rect3)) || (rect2.intersects(rect3))){
    addSelectionRow(i);
    dontRelease = false;
    repaint();
    The idea was that for every press of the mouse the 1st set of x,y coords. are taken to be the starting corner of the "selection" rectangle, and every point passed over while dragging would be the ending corner of the rectangle (so that in paintComponents, you could actually draw the rectangle).
    Once the mouse is released it will check to see if the selection rectangle had contained or intersected any of the rows (basically I find how many rows are being shown in the tree and go through each one to see if there is intersection/containment). If a row is contained it becomes selected.
    The remaining code in MousePressed is used if node(s) were previously selected it goes through and checks to see if this mouse press is at the location of one of the previous selected nodes - if it is then you can drag that node along with all of its siblings to their destination. However if your mouse press is not on one of the selected nodes - all the nodes should be deselected (like in explorer if you press away from your selection, you lose it). If you select and begin to drag your selection dontRelease should not allow the creation of another "selection" rectangle to occur during the drag-n-drop process.
    -That's how I thought this code should work. Unfortunately as it does most of these things it does not correctly implement rule #2 of Windows Explorer (2. only by dragging one of the selected nodes can you drag them, otherwise you lose them)...currently as long as something is selected you can do a mouse press and drag from another location and as long as that location does not contain a node (like it is a blank area in the JTree), you can drag everything to the destination from when you start dragging.
    I looked around and saw that perhaps it is due to the BasicTreeUI interferring with it's own MouseInputHandler() so I wrote MyTreeUI that extends BasicTreeUI, basically changing only the MouseInputHandler to contain the functions above, and I blocked /**/ those functions from my MyTree Constructor.
    Then in my main class (the one of instantiate my MyTree and my DefaultMutableTreeNodes), I wrote:
    try
    String myTreeUI = "MyTreeUI";
    UIManager.put( "MyTreeUI", myTreeUI );
    UIManager.put( myTreeUI,
    Class.forName( myTreeUI ) );
    } catch( ClassNotFoundException cnfe ) {
    System.err.println( "My Tree UI class not found" );
    System.err.println( cnfe );
    ...thinking that that would be all I needed in order to set MyTreeUI as the JTree's UI, LooknFeel, etc. and although I did not get that ClassNotFoundException when running the program, it did not have any of the functionality that I had written ( I even wrote a System.out.println() in my MousePressed() function in MyTreeUI so that it would let me know that it is working and it never appeared). It was as if the MyTreeUI was not loaded or attached to the JTree. I also called:
    System.out.println("this is UI: " + jTree1.getUIClassID() );
    to see which UI my MyTree instantiate was using and it would printout TreeUI, not MyTreeUI. So I'm wondering what it is I'm doing wrong, I think I am very close to having this thing working but I want to know if anybody here would be able to let me know what I'm doing wrong or what would be the best way to go about implementing this Windows Explorer Multiple Selection JTree.
    Sorry for the long-winded explanation,
    -Meddev24.

  • Can't cut and paste from iPhoto

    I am trying to remove photos from my iPhoto library and paste them on a external hard drive. I select, cut and then click on the hard drive window and try to paste.  If I do this with just a few photos (10 or less), it always works.  If I try to do this with several hundred photos it rarely works.  I can cut them from iPhoto, but can not paste to the hard drive.  The "paste XXX items" button does not come to life.
    Mac info: OSX, version 10.8.5, 3.2 GHz Intel Core 13, 4GD 1333MHz RAM.
    iPhoto info: iPhoto 11, version 9.4.3
    Hard drive: LaCie 1TB

    The only reason I am trying to reduce the photos in the iPhoto library on my Mac, is I have been having problems using iPhoto (freezes up, has trouble saving changes…).  People have told me that maybe I have too many photos (around 25K) and if I move some to an external drive it would help.  Will this help?  Is having 25K photos really a problem?
    I read the "Exporting From iPhoto" link and it looks like it will allow me to export the photos.  Thanks.

  • Cut and paste bitmap, this is killing me

    Okay so here's the deal, i'm just trying to figure out how to
    cut and paste bitmap selections. I realize that in the fireworks
    help it just tells you to make a marquee selection, cut, and paste.
    this works sometimes, most of the time it doesn't though. A lot of
    the time it cuts and pasts a marquee selection that's free
    floating, so when i move it it just moves on top of the bitmap, and
    doesn't move the pixels within the selection. Also, sometime when
    i'm doing this multiple times, i'll cut and paste sucessfully, and
    then try it again, cut, and when i paste it pastes the previous
    selection even though i just supposedly cut a new one, AHHH. Then
    also someitmes when i paste, i just get the marquee line pasted,
    and i can't do anything with other tools until i hit escape, though
    i don't know why.
    Also when i try to reshape it with the distort or skew tool,
    there's no telling what will happen. Sometimes the selection
    reshapes, sometimes just the marquee line, who knows. there is no
    help in the fireworks help i've read the whole thing. Someone who
    knows please give me a rundown on how to do this sucessfully
    .

    It might be helpful for you too look at the Layers Panel
    while doing all
    this.

  • On OSX 10.5.8 and I can't cut & paste or click and drag, HELP!

    Hi all,
    Please help! I can no longer click and drag icons or cut and paste.  I'm running OSX 10.5.8 on an '07 macbook, and I really do not want to loose everything, is there a solution???  At the same time I have had a little trouble with the net and downloading files.
    Is there a fix??  I'm desparate

    Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
    Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    (Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

  • The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?

    I have recently switched from a PC to a MacBook Pro.
    I have a large number of documents and photographs on a multiterrabite external drive, backed up on a second multiterrabite external drive.
    Both external drives are formatted for MacIntosh. This has been verified by agents at an Apple store and also at Best Buy in two different cities.
    This is the problem:
    The MacBook Pro will not allow me to cut-and-paste to and from or to click-and-drag to the external drive. I can copy-and-paste, but then I must send the original to the trash, which doubles the time and effort. Is there any way to cut-and-paste?
    Also, the MacBook Pro will not allow me to rename multiple documents or photographs. I can click-and-rename a single one, but this is impossibly time consuming. I can batch-rename in iPhoto, but when I transfer the photographs to the external drive, the rename does not transfer.
    I’m reduced to using my wife’s Toshiba to cut-and-past, rename, and transfer documents. It works perfectly. Is there any way to do this on the MacBook Pro?
    Thanks!

    No, this is a philosophical difference between Apple and Microsoft. Apple believes that it's dangerous to cut a file in case the user never pastes it; in that case the file is lost. Microsoft seems to not have this problem (if I remember Windows correctly) because they don't delete the originating file if it's cut but never pasted.
    Even though Macs have a lot of keyboard shortcuts, philosophically Macs have traditionally been mouse-first. This applies to file copy operations. In your case, what a Mac user would do is open the source window, open the destination window (on your second drive), and then Command-drag the selected files from the source to destination window. This is because a normal drag would leave the originals behind, while adding the Command modifier key tells OS X that this is a Move, not a Copy, so don't leave the originals behind.
    (In addition there are different rules for drag-copying within the same volume or between different volumes. If you drag between two folders on the same volume, the files are moved. If you drag between different volumes, the files are copied unless you hold down Command to delete the copies on the source volume.)

    Two problems in this case. First, batch file renaming is not built into OS X unless you build something with Automator. However, there are many utilities that can do batch file renaming which you can find at macupdate.com or on the App Store. Since I work with media I often batch rename using one of the media managers I have lying around like Media Pro or Adobe Bridge (comes with Photoshop).
    iPhoto is a database front end designed to shield the file system from the consumer and let them concentrate on creativity and sharing. As such it is often a poor choice for managing files directly. When you "transferred the photographs" chances are you moved the originals, not the ones iPhoto edited which are stored in a hidden folder.

    There will not be a way to do it exactly like Windows. As described above, there are ways to do it "the Mac way." If it is possible to remove judgment on which way is "better" you might find the Mac way to be acceptable, but of course sometimes we simply prefer what we're used to.

  • Selecting and Dragging multiple clips - CS6 Sniper mode

    With the introduction of ability to select Edit Points, now it's inconvenient to drag multiple selected clips or add clips to selection because in some cases - depending on timeline zoom state and/or clip duration. The edit points are altered instead of the clips, that behaviour drives me nuts. It leads to a necessity to do one of the following actions before selecting and/or dragging multiple clips with comfort:
    sniper mode - put the cursor over a place in the selection where the cursor will not indicate Edit Point trimming mode.
    to avoid loosing selection when using sniper mode - Group the clips after adding every clip to selection and/or after a dragging operation
    dynamically change zoom state so that you will not have to use sniper mode
    use copy/cut/paste - may involve a necessity to do additional pre-pasting steps
    IMHO, this behaviour should be rethinked.
    How fast it was in CS5.5 and older versions:
    Please, Premiere Pro Programming Team, especially Tim Gogolin, Steve Hoeg, Peter Lee, Gerry Miller, James Mork, Vivek Neelamegam, Axel Schildan, Jerry Scoggins, Sven Skwirblies, Tod Snook, Jesse Zibble, rethink the behaviour of selecting and dragging clips. Start giving links to beta-versions to other editors too, not only to editors like Philip Bloom.
    Selecting edit points is sometimes helpful and sometimes distracting.
    To get the best of two worlds (CS6 edit points vs. CS5.5 and older) - a switch could be added to Keyboard Shortcuts list, like the "hidden" Add Clip Marker shortcut.
    Let's name it "Application > Sequence > Select Edit Points".
    When Shift- or Shift+Alt- key is pressed and some Clip is selected, clicking on an edit point of another clip should add a clip to selection in the same way as previous versions of Premiere Pro did:
    To drag clips in legacy sniper-free mode only a switch can help. Let's name it "Application > Sequence > Select Edit Points when Multiple Clips are Selected".
    To add comfort to the editing process - selecting/dragging multiple clips - additional switches cannot be avoided. Additionally you may add an option to the Preferences > Trim:
    Allow Selection tool to choose Roll and Ripple trims without modifier key
    Allow Selection tool to select Edit Points while multiple Clips are selected
    Feature Request/Bug Report Form
      ******BUG******

    With all due respect Kevin, nobody at Adobe has the right to change a program SO drastically.  I am also a mouse person, and am MUCH faster using the mouse, vs the keyboard.
    When people have invested YEARS into a program like Adobe, they get used to things, how things work, the feel of a program.  I really don't see how you all can just change it on a whim.  IF you are going to do this, BOTH methods should still work.  You cannot just stop the way people are used to editing.  You can't just decide to change a program so drastically, that it doesn't feel like a program we have grown to love over many long years.  If Adobe on a whole is changing things, just because a few people in your company voice opinions like I've quoted below, it's not the way to go.  Adobe should be really putting feelers out there, and seeing how people are really using the program.  Things should be getting easier, more powerful, sure that's natural, but you can't just decide to remove things that mouse users do every day. :-(
    Upgrading a program, and changing it to this degree, are two different things in my book.  I have not yet upgraded, but it is very scary - the things I'm seeing.  For one, way way too many bugs.  The amount of bugs on so many boards being reported are just beyond comprehension.
    And a final note, I for one, am very glad Steven is posting these videos ( I'd like to hear him go through steps though - just watching the video with no audio of what he is doing is not so great, however after watching some of his posts, he's knows what he's doing, and has a good head to think with )
    I mostly read posts, but I thought I would voice my opinion, if none of us speak up, nothing will get changed.  I'm really hoping that Adobe implements some change in the next revision .5 or whatever it will be called.  Reading posts like this one are really depressing.  Did you watch Steven's video on a simple task as moving multiple clips around on a timeline ?  Doing this with a mouse just isn't going to work for many, removing simple tasks by way of using a mouse would stop me from upgrading.
    Please address this in upcoming updates.
    Dave.

    Select banana. Right click>layer via copy. Move tool. Click and drag to other file. Drop on image.
    OR: load the background and banana in one stack (File>Scripts>Load File Into Stack). Select banana and layer via copy or create layer mask.

    Yeah that works, but, it involves a click on the event, a click on edit, a click on the date, keystrokes, plus, since you can't see the next month you have to have a calendar in front of you so as to put it to the right date. It's easier just to cut it and advance the month and paste it, once you are in the right month you can move it around helter skelter willy nilly no problems. Although now that you mention it I will try it, maybe it is easier than cut and paste as I don't really care about the date, as long as it gets moved into the right month I can drag it around all I want.
