Selecting in CS5 illustrator

Hi,
I have upgraded to CS5 from 10 and am finding it a little less behaved, for me, my fault i"m sure.
I am having the wierdest time copying and pasting the actual drawing into ID CS5 without a huge surrounding box which is awkward and bothersome.
What am I doing wrong here?
I would update all the old files into CS5 but there is some sort of assumption that I have stolen fonts and also I can't seem to make it into a new file at greater than 72 ppi. Why anyone would draw in illustrator at this low resolution is a mystery to me. Is there a preference to bypass this behavior?
Thanks,
Garrett

Copy and paste is the way I've been doing it for to many years to want to change.
There's nothing wrong with copying from AI and pasting into InD, as long as you understand:
What you paste will be converted to native InD objects fully contained within the InD file; therefore will enlarge the size of the InD file. Perfectly fine for small, simple spot graphics, but can quickly bloat the size of a page-layout file if done indiscriminately. There's good reason why page-layout programs are designed to rely heavily upon external links.
The nature of what kind(s) of content you are copying/pasting and the attendant ramifications. For example, if you have applied a live raster effect to the something copied from Illustrator, then what you paste into InD would contain a raster image--and that may account for the larger-than-expected bounds. That's part of what Scott was alluding to. That's why it's important for you to fully describe what exactly you are doing, what kind of objects are involved, what OS you are using, when asking such questions.
Editing an already placed drawing is an interesting idea but I would not want to have this this kind of update idea happen without my control over it....
Can't imagine it ... Sound like something from a committee to support the bridge.
There is nothing newfangled about importing externally-linked files and their being updated in the container document when changes are made to the external file. The practice dates back to the beginnings of 'desktop publishing' in the 80s. An externally-linked file is read in again whenever the receiving document is re-opened or exported, or printed.
Even the much ballyhooed 'Smart Objects' feature in recent versions of Adobe apps is of little more consequence than the 'hot links' and 'edit with...' or 'edit original' features common in other graphics programs, the basic function of which is essentially just to allow you to specify a preferred program as the default editor for imported objects of particular types, and an OS call to lauch that program and open the object.
...but I would not want to have this this kind of update idea happen without my control over it.
Actually, the update wouldn't happen without asking.  ID will notice that the illustration has changed and will ask you first if you want the updated picture.  It's actually pretty powerful that all the tools work together like this.
In InD, you would be notified of the discrepancy if the external linked file is changed. But that doesn't necessarily mean you can then just choose to disallow the update and everything will be fine. If the external file has been edited and saved, InD cannot magically "revert" the changed file to its previous state; and it's an external link, so InD hasn't stored a version of it in its previous state. So of course you have to be aware of what you are doing. But again, there is nothing new about any of this. The basic principles predate the very existence of InD by decades.

  • Can anyone tell me if you can back save from CS6 to CS5 Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop OK?

Can anyone tell me if you can back save from CS6 to CS5 Illustrator, Indesign and Photoshop OK? Want to upgrade to CS6 but must I must still remain compatible with work. They are using CS5.

To clarify your answer for Illustrator.  The option is not in the "Save As" dialog box.
    The correct answer is
    Open you CS6 Illustrator file.
    File>Save As
The Save As dialog box opens
Type your file name (DIFFERENT THAN ORIGINAL PLEASE!) and the Save as Type is still going to be Adobe Illustrator (*.AI)   **This is where the above instructions threw me, as the Save as type drop down does not list anything about versions to save fo)
    Click Save
Once you click Save, the Illustrator Options dialog box will come up.  The first option is titled Version and has a drop down menu.  Select the version of illustrator you want to save your file as here, then click ok.
    Your done.
I strongly suggest you give this file a different name than your original CS6 Illustrator version as you may lose some parts of your design in the conversion.
    Hope this helps.  Enjoy!

  • A problem highlighting/selecting text in Illustrator CS3

In several instances I can't highlight text to copy or to edit, other times it works fine. If I click the radio button for the text in layers (other layers may be locked to prevent accidental selection), the baselines appears and I should be able to highlight the text, but I can't. If I highlight some other unaffected area of text successfully (unlocked layers), sometimes it will allow me to select the problem text directly after. Then it will go back to being a problem, why?

I'm using the general text tool, I've locked the other sublayers to avoid accidentally selecting those items. Then I click the radio button on the sublayer I wish to edit or copy, which reveals the baselines. Then if I click within that object to highlight text with the cursor, the text tool creates a new textbox/sublayer and does not highlight the text I intended.

  • Selecting Objects in Illustrator - selecting objects only completely contained within your selection box

    Hi
    Macbook Pro, Illustrator CC 2014.1.0
When selecting objects in Illustrator using a selection box created by dragging a selection tool, everything that the box touches gets selected.  On programs like AutoCad, there are options to select only what is completely contained within the selection box.  This can be very helpful.  Can one do this in Illustrator?
    Thanks in advance

I use Illustrator pretty often but I'm not at a level that I understand scripting.  Maybe I'm out of luck then.

  • Error on selecting object in ILLUSTRATOR CC

Hi everyone, i have problem with selecting object in illustrator CC, when i select the current object it will also select the other object, i cannot select the object i want, not on the group or clipping mask.. always highlight it both. it often times happen when i doing so much vector object. any help from you guys is so much appreciated..
    thanks
    Creig

This has been happening through so many versions that I no longer remember when I first encountered it.
    One trick that occasionally works when you get such a 'ghost' selection;
Create another object (a small square or whatever).
Select it. Your new object and the ghost will be selected at this point.
Align them using any one of the alignment buttons, it doesn't matter which one.
Immediately undo the move (Cmnd/Ctrl + z) and deselect your new object. About nine times out of ten the ghost selection will be gone as well. If so, you can delete your extraneous object and continue working (until next time).
It doesn't always work. But it is quicker than a restart when it does.

  • CS5 Illustrator images can no longer saved as a PDF

My CS5 Illustrator images can no longer be saved as a PDF.
Possible cause is because my .ai work got saved as CS6 version at school. Do I need to upgrade to CS6 in order to have my images saved as PDF?
Thanks -- 3x expensive class, given probable need to upgrade.

    DC,
Possible cause is because my .ai work got saved as CS6 version at school.
On the same computer? If you still have the original CS5 document(s) on your computer, whatever happened at school should have no consequence in this connexion.
If you saved the actual document(s) as CS6, you may have some issues, but that would include difficulty in opening with CS5; maybe you are only able to open as PDF.
So its sounds as if the expected issue would be the opposite of what (I believe) you describe.
    Is it posible to clarify?

  • CS5 Illustrator to CS4 Illustrator

I need to save a CS5 Illustrator file down to a CS4 Illustrator without loosing any data or flattening any work.  Is there a way?

CS5 Illustrator file down to a CS4 Illustrator without loosing any data
That's an oximoron in terms. You will always loose data in the strict sense. Per se, however, that does not mean you will loose any data that makes up the visible parts, but naturally things like Perspective Grids or 9-slice scaling will be reset or expanded as will gradient meshes with transparency for instance, 'cos naturalyl those features do not exist in Cs4. otehr than that it's as simple as doing a File --> Save As... in CS5 and picking the correct version to save down to.

  • CS5 Illustrator - trying to create bleeds for a pdf?

    Hello:
I am in CS5 Illustrator and I am setting up a greeting card for press. In the same document I set up two pages for the front and back. Two panels for each page. I put 1/8" bleeds. How do you have the bleeds show up in the pdf? I know how to do it in InDesign but in Illustrator is it done differently. I can make trim marks but no bleeds show up, I even specified document bleeds in the pdf dialog box. Do you have to make the page bigger to compensate for the bleeds.
    Thanks in advance.

Then when you make the pdf keep use Marks and Bleeds >> Bleeds >> Use Document Bleed Settings checked
