Selecting Layers Inside Collage

I'm having trouble selecting specific layers inside a
collage. Many of the layers overlap, so the smaller images are
harder to select, sometimes even impossible.
It'd be much easier if I could select the image from the
timeline. But I'm trying to alpha tween each of the images and
selecting the layer from the timeline doesn't give me access to the
color menu in the properties box.
Also an unrelated problem with the images which I've imported
from photoshop. The layer masks I've created for each of these
images aren't showing completely. The mask is very blotchy.

You might try unchecking Auto-Select and set to Layer instead of Group.

Illustrator layers inside AE

Hi everyone!
Apologies again for my lack of knowledge in this area. I have multiple layers inside Illustrator, each with the shape outlines for different words. See this thread...

Everything works great inside Illustrator -- all of the layers are in sequential order of how they were typed. However, once I import the Illustrator file into After Effects, all of the layers are alphabetized by the name of the layer (no longer in the order they were originally typed). I need to preserve the layer order from Illustrator inside After Effects.
If anyone could help out it would be MUCH appreciated.

Okay... I suppose that works.
I ran into another problem though. The selection boxes around all of the layers are all the size of the composition, and not the size of the words. This makes it really difficult to move the words around by hand, because they're all stacked on top of each other.
When I imported the Illustrator file I chose "Import as Composition - Cropped Layers" thinking that would do the trick. Is there any way to make the selection boxes the size of the words and not the whole composition?

Pages '09: Can't use AppleScript for selected text inside tables?

When I run get selection on selected text in a Pages document, I get something like this:

When I run get selection on selected text inside a table cell in a table in a Pages document, I get something like this:

When I run get selection on selected text inside a table cell in ANOTHER table in the same Pages document, I get the exact same thing. It still says "some" table. So there is no way to distinguish between tables if there are more than one table in the same Pages document.
Am I correct in understanding that this means that most AppleScript commands for manipulating text are unusable inside table cells?
For example, it seems impossible to get the properties of the selection when the selection is selected text inside "some" table. So it's impossible do anything about text styles, etc.
Is AppleScript support in Pages ’09 really that limited, or am I missing something?

The first script below should return the character style of any selection made in Pages ’09, whereas the second script should apply the "XXX" character style to any selection:

I suppose that +paragraph styles+ should work the same.

Select objects inside a shape

Hello!
Im looking for a way to export a pattern made in Illustrator to auto cad.
I would like to select objects inside a shape based on the shape.
As you can see here i would like to select all the objects inside the blue circle, and delete everything outside of it. I dont want to use a cliping mask as it does not really destory the objects outside the
circle. Any help would be much appreciated.

Jakob,
You may use careful manual cutting (using Smart Guides) along the circle and grumble over the lack of easy ways to do it properly on open paths.
Or you may do the destructive deed, with the Clipping Mask selected:
1) In the Transparency palette/panel dropdown list select anything but Normal (Multiply is fine),
2) Object>Flatten Transparency, just keep the defaults including 100% Vector,
3) Shudder.
This should reduce the size to the Bounding Box of the Clipping Path.
It makes a bit of a mess out of the mesh (strokes are outlined to become filled paths); it has the (dis)advantage of cutting each path end at the actual angle of the Clipping Path (the circle).

Replace layer names in selected layers only

I am using this script to find and replace words in layers. (The script only targets particualr words, rather than the whole layer name).
I would like to make it so it targets selected layers only.
I have found this script which loops through selected layers only, but I am not sure how to add the find and replace layer name functioality.

As far as I know that is the only round about way of knowing if a layer is selected via scripting.

[CS3][JS] Selecting Layers by Name

I'm trying to design a script to select layers by a given name. And then PDF layer1 (base) and certain items that are on each layer 1 at a time so I have multiple different pages. But the PDF thing doesn't seem to be much of an issue. I just can't select the layer by name.
This is what I have so far:

Select statements inside a SQL Expression field

Why cannot we use the Select statements inside a SQL expression field in Crystal Reports ?
Any alternatives for this...

Hi Srivatsa,
SQL Expressions is something the Database supports. We query the Client engine for a list of functions they make available. If the SQL Statement is not list it's not an option and therefore it won't work.
Your work arounds are to use either a Stored Procedure, this is the most efficient way, all processing is done server side and CR simply waits for the data to format in the report. Another option is to use a
Command Object, use one CO per report so try to get all data within the SQL statement. We simply pass the SQL to the server and wait for the result set, if you get an error it will be the SQL you typed in. Test in a SQL test tool first to confirm you are getting the data correctly.

Looping through controls is indeed a inefficient way of doing what you want!
With such a great number of controls, you could assign an appropriate callbackData to each of them when loading the panel. Next you could create an array of control IDs with all the LEDs and operate in the switch callback to turn on and off the corresponding led. A small example will be more clear:
At panel load:

For this solution to work, leds[] array must be global so that it is available to the control callback.
An additional improvement could be to modify the panel loading so that swithces and leds are created programmatically. You could have a single switch/led pair set in the UIR editor and next have a loop that duplicate the controls, sets callbackData and loads the array of led ids.

Batch rename selected layers

I'm trying to find a script that can help batch rename/renumber a group of selected layers.
So far I've been able to find a script that renames every single layer in a Photoshop document (overkill). Or there's the CS6 Tab rename trick (too slow).
I routintely export PSDs from Illustrator for use in After Effects. But in Photoshop, I'll get a couple hundred layers named <path> or <path> + <path> or <group>. Renaming by hand is out of the question. But I don't want to rename every layer the same.
Any suggestions?

It seems the way to access the selected layers in layer panel has been changed in CS5.

Selecting the inside of a shape - inside is white with no content

Hi! I need to select the inside of this shape (white part only) and make an exact copy. Am new to illustrator and can't figure this out except to manually make a shape that would fit the exact shape. I could also make a copy of the purple area and make a copy and scale to fit. There has to be an easier way.......

declare selection screen as
begin of selection-screen 0100 as subscreen.
end of selection-screen...
then,
in flow logic of your module pool screen

Is there a way to move everything forward when you stretch select layers?

Hi,
I have a comp with multiple animations happening.
At some places in the comp I want to make layers appear longer.
When I select these and stretch them - the remaining layers need to move forward in time to compensate.
This doesnt happen and so the stretched layers over lap with upcoming (in the time line) layers.
Is there a way to do this?

You can command-select the layers you want to move and drag them forward or backward in time. It's easy. There is no way that I know of to do this automatically if you stretch a layer. AE does not have insert-and-ripple capabilities like a video editor does.
Place or move a layer in time
The layer duration bar represents the layer duration visually. The In, Out, and Duration columns in the Timeline panel represent the layer duration numerically.
Note:
To choose which columns are visible in the Timeline panel, choose Columns from the panel menu, or right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac OS) a column heading.
These procedures move the entire layer in time.
To set the In point or Out point numerically, click the number in the In or Out column for the layer in the Timeline panel.
To move the In point or Out point to the current time, Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac OS) the number in the In or Out column for the layer in the Timeline panel.
To move the In points of selected layers to the beginning of the composition, press Alt+Home (Windows) or Option+Home (Mac OS).
To move the Out points of selected layers to the end of the composition, press Alt+End (Windows) or Option+End (Mac OS).
To move selected layers one frame later, press Alt+Page Down (Windows) or Option+Page Down (Mac OS). To move selected layers 10 frames later, press Alt+Shift+Page Down (Windows) or Option+Shift+Page Down (Mac OS).
To move selected layers one frame earlier, press Alt+Page Up (Windows) or Option+Page Up (Mac OS). To move selected layers 10 frames earlier, press Alt+Shift+Page Up (Windows) or Option+Shift+Page Up (Mac OS).
To move the entire layer in time by dragging, drag the layer duration bar to the left or right. To snap the layer duration bar to significant points in time (such as markers, or the start or end of the composition), Shift-drag the layer duration bar.
Note:
When you drag a layer in the Timeline panel, the Info panel displays the name, duration, change in time, and In and Out points for the layer.
