Selecting Multiple Contiguous Files on Desktop

I have been unsuccessful in selecting multiple contiguous files on the Yosemite Desktop. There is no problem in a Finder window, but on the Desktop, selecting a file and then the last of a contiguous group of files fails to include the files in-between. I have to select multiple contiguous files individually. What am I missing?

Not so, worked in Mavericks.
No, really. Shift-clicking in Icon View does not extend the selection from what is already selected down to the item you shift-click. It hasn’t done that in icon view for at least two OS’s.

  • Selecting multiple image files on the 'insert picture' menu in word

    Hi there,
I am trying to insert multiple pictures at once into a word document, on office for mac 2011.
I am using the 'insert picture' option from the toolbar. Shift-click doesn't work like on a PC, and i have tried a variety of button combinations that don't seem to have any effect! Is there any way around this so I don't have to insert picture files into a word document one at a time?
    Thanks!

You are right, it does not work. Here is a workaround by doing an intermediate stopover in TextExit (it's in your Dock and/or in your Applications folder):
In the Finder, select your multiple image files
Right-click (or control-click) and select "Copy # items"
    Go to TextEdit and paste
Do Select All (Command A) followed by Copy (Command C)
Go back to Word and paste your heart out

  • Selecting multiple individual files

I saw something about this under the heading "moving multiple files" but got lost in the answer.
if i want to select several things to move or copy or what ever in a list--whether it is multiple files, multiple emails (for example to delete them at the same time) or even multiple tunes in ipod to move them:
if i hold down "shift" and then move down the list it will highlight them. the problem is I can't figure out how to select individual files or what ever that may not be right next to each other--
for example if I want to hit emails 1,3 and 5 and hold down shift. it will highlight email 1, but when I move it down to highlight #3, it will highlight email #2 as well.
the other thread mentioned something about hitting the "command" "shift" keys- or "command A" "shift" keys. which is the "command" or "command A" key or keys and do you hold them down the whole time while you are going down the list, or hit them sequentially and then go down the list. thanks!

to select multiple items not next to each other, command-click them. The command key is next to the space key (it has the little apple logo on it). Hope this helps.

  • How do I "contract" my selection of contiguous files in the same direction (up and down) on Mac?

In Windows, Mac OSX, and Bridge on Windows, when I hold SHIFT and navigate with up and down arrows, I can select more files or fewer files in the direction I am going. However, doing the same thing in Bridge CC on the Mac expands my selection on the opposite end.
For example, if I have a list of 100 images, and I want to select 21-35, I do the following.
    - Highlight file #25, hold SHIFT, and press down arrow a bunch of times until I've selected 21-35
If I make a mistake and accidentally select a range from 21-37, I can easily tap the up arrow 2 times and "contract" my selection to 21-35.
Doing the last step in Bridge CC on the Mac instead does this:
    - Starting with a range from 21-37, I press up arrow 2 times and it expands the selection the other direction to 19-37.
This is extremely frustrating, especially considering the fact that this is inconsistent with every other environment I am used to. Is there something I'm missing? Anybody else encounter the same issue?

  • Selecting multiple audio files

My site is for choir members to help with rehearsing at home and to listen to our past concerts. I have pages where there are upto 20 pieces of music all accesible by their own individual link. This is fine if you want to sit at the computer and choose 1 at a time but a bit of a pita if you want to hear the whole concert. I have been asked to supply the option to listen to all of the files concecutively. The pages I am working with are password protected but are exactly the same as this page. http://www.wigstonmalechoir.co.uk/wmvc/Magic.html
Can anyone offer me a solution please?

When you want to put a number of audio files on a web page you need to ensure that they don't all have to load with the web page.
There are a number of flash jukebox players around...

The latest version of JW will also fallback to HTML5 for iOS devices...

    Here's some button players...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Website-Music-Players/Audio-Button-Player.html
... that can be used for multiple files...

If you want HTML5 with flash fallback and to be able to add tracks so that they act like a playlist, you can use mediaelement like this...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Website-Music-Players/HTML5-Audio-In-A-Box.html
The mediaelement player is a really good solution for HTML5 since it presents a uniform control bar in all browsers on personal computers.

  • What is the keyboard shortcut to select multiple files?

I have the wireless keyboard and Mac OS 10.6.8. How do I select multiple contiguous files in Finder?  I've tried shift + click, fn + click, control + click, option + click, and command + click, but nothing works. Is there some burried setting somewhere to enable a key shortcut?

Shift-click is the standard to select multiple, contiguous items, including files in the Finder.
However, shift-click doesn't select contiguous files if you're in icon view - presumably due to the ill-defined concept of 'contiguous' in this setup.
So if you're in icon view, shift-click might not do what you want - in which case either switch to list view, or just drag an area on the window to contain the iterms you want to select.

  • How to select multiple files with Trackpad

I am new to Mac and to the Trackpad. I apologize if this has been posted.
When I work on a Windows PC, if I want to select multiple consecutive files I can click on the first file, press and hold SHIFT and then select the last file and all files in between are selected.
I tried that using the Trackpad and it doesn't seem to work the same way. Is there another key combination? I can select multiple files by either using SHIFT (on Picasa website for example) and then tap or by holding COMMAND and then tap each individual file. But how do I select multiple files similar to Windows, clicking first file pressing a key and clicking the last file.
Thanks in advance for any input on this.

If you choose 'view as list', you can use the shift-key. Select an item, press the shift-key while you press an item below and all the items between are selected.

  • Selecting multiple files with mouse now wonky

Using Windows 8.1 on HP machine
    All updates up-to-date
    Hardware: Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0
Explorer Folder Option selected: Single-click to open an item (point to select); Underline icon titles only when I point on them
Display: Detail list (Ctrl + Shift + 6)
    No touch input
Here's the problem: For as long as I have used windows, I can select multiple files by pressing ctrl-left mouse button. If I want to select multiple consecutive files, I move my cursor down to the last file in the list and press shift-left mouse button.
If I want to select multiple files that are not listed consecutively, I move my cursor along the list of files and press ctrl-left mouse button to select each individual file.
This does not work for me any longer and I do not know why.
Often I will press ctrl-left mouse click and the file will not select. When I move my mouse away from the file I've selected, it will UN-select. If I continue to press the CTRL key while attempting to select another file and float my mouse cursor down the
list of files to select ONE single file further in the list, ALL the files in between the first file I click and the final file will become selected.
Moving the mouse cursor carefully and steadily to select individual files yields varied results; sometimes I can select individual files; sometimes, I can click multiple times to select an additional file and the file will not become selected. More often
than not, I will select several files and earlier files will become unselected.
    Extremely frustrating.
I have been a Windows user since version 3.1 and this has never happened to me. I have been a Windows 8.1 user for over a year now and this is a new wrinkle. I have done system restore multiple times and it has not solved the problem. I have uninstalled
Intellipoint/Microsoft Keyboard & Mouse center and reinstalled and the problem has not solved. I have checked every setting for my mouse in the mouse center and cannot see a setting that imposes this feature.
Changing folder options to Double-click to open an item (single click to select) solves the problem. I am able to navigate and organize my files the way I always have. Only happens when single-click feature is enabled. Please note: I have been using the
single-click select feature since Windows XP.
Your guidance and actual solution to this irritant is appreciated.

    Hi,
During my test, I cannot repro this issue even I configure the same setting with you. Maybe a hardware issue or software issue.
Does this issue happen to other mouse?
Can you test in safe mode to check how it works?

  • Printing multiple PDF files in Windows 7 at once

When I had Windows XP I could select multiple pdf files in their folder then right click to print.  With Windows 7 this option is no longer there. I have searched everywhere for a solution to this problem.  I am not sure why Adobe (or Microsoft) took this option away.  I have to print 30 to 40 invoices a day.  I now currently have to open each individual document, print, close, and move on to the next.  This is quite cumbersome.  If anyone knows of a way around this I would appreciate the help.
If no solution is available does Abode know of the situation?

your right.  I am using Acrobat.  didn't even know I had it. I've been bugging the IT guy for Acrobat for a while.  I have no idea how long it's been installed.  I had just bugged him again last week.
reader is still set as my default.  without even realizing it, i've only been using acrobat to combine and print large files.
the only way to combine pdf's in reader is to use Adobe's online service which you have to pay for.
I'm sure there's some third party software out there.    I use bluebeam to mark up pdf's.  it's free.
don't know if it can be used to print or combine multiple files.  never tried.
the method of dragging and dropping pdf files into the printer window does work with reader. (I checked)
As I said, it prints the documents out of order which can be a pain.
I found this discussion because I was searching for a way to get the documents to print in order.  Haven't found one......yet.

  • Viewing total duration for multiple audio files

I need to be able to view 'total duration', when selecting multiple audio files, e.g. 10 audio files, total duration 42.03. I can't find a way to do this and so far, all I've been able to do is view individual audio file durations, then total them manually (which takes far too long, for what I need to do). I've previously been a Windows user, and this is instantly viewable in Explorer.
I'm new to OS X, and really need to be able to do this for my job. Can anyone help??
    Thanks in advance, Marc

Here's an image to explain better:
    http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/3241/playlisttotaltime.jpg
However the total time isn't 100% accurate, because I believe iTunes is adding some extra seconds for the gaps in between songs.

  • How do you select multiple files on a macbook pro?

Can anyone tell me how to select multiple files at one time?  I am so frustrated with the way macbook pro works that I really regret buying it.  I hate that you can't select multiple files, and that my contact stuff keeps changing.  It is certainly not like I was told...that I would never want to use a PC again.  I would not buy another apple computer.  I spent a lot of money to NOT be able to do things that I have always done with ease.  Every time I think I have something figured out, it doesn't work the next time I go to use it in another program.  If anyone has an answer to this, I would sure appreciate it.
And all of these so called wonderful updates to the operating system on all mac products have left me frustrated and liking my apple products far less than I did before.  On my iphone I had to make the texts just huge to even be able to see the white writing on a blue background.  Not sure who made these designs, but from my perspective, I can tell you they certainly weren't thinking about being user friendly in any way when they did it.  So disappointed in all of my devices!  I do not enjoy using my computer, ipad, or iphone even close to what I did before.

This is some information on the Finder.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2470
To select multiple files you can use the shift key with the mouse if they are in a contiguous list or the CMD key with the mouse if you have breaks in that list. You can also use the mouse to drag over the files you want to select.
The Macs are easy to use, I have used many versions of Windows, Linux and other operating systems and I find OS X is far the easiest, but that is me.
There are many instructional videos and texts on Apples web site and if you are near to an Apple store they do classes to help.
Hope you get used to it.

  • Command+click and drag to select multiple files

    Hi everyone,
I switched about a year ago and recently joined this group. I love OS X and will never go back to windoze, however after recently upgrading to Tiger, I went to command+click and drag to select multiple files in order to drag them to the trash, all I succeeded in doing was to drop one file into the next folder down. Did I miss a check box somewhere, or something. It feels like windoze now, having to command+click individual files to select more than one, or use the edit menu to "select all".
I'm not going back to Panther just to get back this feature I miss, and was hoping there is a way to get it to work in Tiger, any suggestions?
    eMac G4 1 gig superdrive   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   768 megs sdram

You might find this easy to do in column view:
    1. Select a group of contiguous files by clicking on the first, then hold down the shift key and click on the last one you want, all files between first and last will be selected.
    2. To add an odd file here and there to the group hold down the command key and click on the file.
Thus you can quickly select an entire group in the middle with click/shift click, then add additional files individually to the selected group.

We have a web app that uses a flash uploader and it works on Android phones and tablets but it will not let us select multiple files on these devices. Is this possible or is there a trick to get these devices to allow us to select more than one file at a time?

  • How do you select multiple files to drag

How do you select multiple files to drag from one folder to another? Is there a command?

Open the folder which has the contents you want to transfer.  Press COMMAND 'A' and then all of the data should be highlited in blue.  Drag it to the new folder.
If only certain files are to be transferred, then you have to select them (COMMAND 'A')  individually and the drag them as a group to the new location.
