Selecting new MBP 13" Vs 15" for VMs

Hi Experts,
Before i begin, i just want to say, I understand that you guys get these type of questions quite frequently but i felt my usage is little different from others ( Not much of Gamings, No Video Editing , No Photoshop etc.,) so , starting this new thread to get your suggestions on my new MBP selection.Am new here,pl. feel free to correct me if am wrong anywhere. TIA & highly appreciate your help.
Am a power user of Linux/Windows but planning to try out the new MBP. I have dilema in selecting the MBP 13" vs 15" models. Here is my usage list to give an idea.
1. Would be running Windows/Linux VMs through parallels or VMware Fusion all the times for the following reasons
a. Some of my softwares i use for work needs IE 7/8 (Am not sure there is a way to overcome this without running VMs - any suggestions would help)
b. I have few windows mobiles and other gadgets which i feel would have compatibility issues in MAC
c. Some of other softwares which i use does not have MAC versions yet.
2. Would be using extensively for Presentations, word processing , excels and web surfing (atleast two browsers with 20-30 tabs)
3. Would listen/watch music/movies extensively (Might consider having a external Blu-ray writer later). Will connect to external TV (probably 40") while working @ home.
4. Would use it for gaming - just to relax, might not use it for high end gamings.
5. Would NOT use photoshop or other image editing softwares apart from once in a while usage of Gimp for some basic img editing.
6. Would NOT use Video editing sw but use sw like handbrake for Video conversion / ripping quite a bit (Probably once or twice a week )
7. I would be traveling a lot , so portability is a key factor but considering other power factors i can compromise on this.
8. Budget for 13" or 15" should be fine with me considering i would not be replacing this box for atleast 2-3yrs.
Here is my concerns as well.
13" - I feel itz good for portability but not sure if it can withstand running the VMs all the times along with MAC OS X.Also, This does not come with 7200 RPM HDD.
15" - I feel the power is good but my primary concern is because of the heating , freeze, external monitor issues which am reading on different forums. Am not sure this is the same case with 13" but havent seen many. - Pl. correct me if am wrong on these assumptions.
Pl. throw in your suggestion to select my new MBP.
Thanks & Regards,
The Lost Geek

Any time you're looking at running virtual machines regularly, more cores are better. You can dedicate more to the VM so you get better performance there while still maintaining decent performance with OS X. Something like XP is pretty light on resources and will run in a VM with relatively light resources dedicated to it. Most modern, primary linux distros (Ubuntu, Suse, etc) need a little more in the resource department, but there are plenty of flavors built off of the primary distros that are lighter. Now that the 13" supports hyperthreading, it is capable of handling a light VM relatively well without much of an impact on the host OS. However, if you plan on, as you have indicated, always running a VM, the 15" will be able to delegate more resources with less of an impact on the overall system's performance. This should help to keep heat down.
So far as gaming... even light gaming... the 13" is pretty limited, although not entirely incapable. The ability to have a dedicated GPU (as with the 15") can make a world of difference. The dedicated GPU in the 15" can handle most modern games (some with settings set a little lower than others).
If you plan to have 3D acceleration enabled in your virtual machines, the dedicated GPU of the 15" will give you a bit more power to work with... again, keeping the temps a bit lower than an integrated GPU which would have to work fairly hard to deal with the limited 3D support in the VM as well as the host OS.
Of course the higher resolution is a benefit as well on the 15". Especially if you want to be able to view a VM in a window (vs. full screen). The resolution of the 13" makes working with a VM in a window difficult.
There really is no question regarding which will perform better. It's really a matter of how important size/weight is to you and what you are will to give up in order to have a smaller machine.

  • Steps to Transfer mail from Older MBP 10.6.8 to Newer MBP 10.8.5 for NON-tech person  I really just need the simplest solution.  I have cleaned out old folders on the OMBP, but there are folders I need for work

I really just need the simplest solution.  I have cleaned out old folders on the OMBP, but there are folders I need for work.
I am not a technical person.  I have gone online and read a gazillion "All Ya Gotta Do...." to the point where my head swims.
I backed up my older MBP onto WD Passport Studio via Time Machine.
I transferred all my files there and put them all onto the newer MBP.
I expected to see Mail but did not.
Someone said just use Migration Assistant, but I dont find that anywhere.
Please dont say iCloud because I dont even know what it is.  Sorry, but I just dont use my Mac other than for work, meaning online access for research, and then typing reports of various kinds... and for emailing.
Can I just hook the firewire directly from OMBP to NMBP and copy them that way??
Sorry I am such a dolt, but I really just want easy step by step instructions, thank you.
Would the Genius Bar at my local store be able to help me???
    Thank you,

    Okey Dokey!
I followed the steps for the Target Disk thing, and was able to transfer everything on my old desktop, in my old pictures file...  all the final transfers regarding my documents and photos.
    BUT
there were no folders for Mail, and when I went to the only folder I could find that said "Mail" -- which was under "applications" it then told me that I could not transfer old "mail" to new "mail" since they were different versions...
Now THIS makes sense,,, and I was not looking to do that...
but how do I find all my mail folders????
Is there someplace I should be saving them in order to get them???
Do you mind helping me with instructions on how to do this?
    Thanks!

  • Buying new MBP, should I go for 2.8 or 3.06 (CPU)?

    Hi,
I am going to get a new MBP 15''. Usually I get the fastest option available (I am a Graphic Designer). I am concern that the 3.06 could be running too hot. Can somebody tell me if that is the case? There is a noticeable increase in performance and/or temperature?
    Thanks for your help!
    Gus

So far as performance goes, you'll never notice the difference between those two processors.... you're basically looking at 2800MHz vs.3060MHz... a difference of about 200MHz. When you're talking about processors in the 3GHz range... 200MHz is pretty much nothing. Also, for processors in this range, that slight difference in performance "should" not amount to anything to more than maybe a degree or two. But since I don't have machines with both processors to compare and I haven't seen benchmarks yet... I can't say that with absolute certainty. It's a very hard comparison to make since temperature changes that small can vary from machine to machine based on the smallest variations. You would have to compare two identical machines (less the processor)... under identical loads... under identical fan speeds (with those fans being at those speeds for identical times as longer or shorter periods would impact the temp as well).
If you're looking to get the faster machine and your only concern is whether or not the speed and heat may be issues... I would say that they shouldn't be. The speed and heat differences would be nominal.

  • My new MacBook Pro keeps asking for my password in any application that I am in. I transferred from old Mac Pro via Time Machine

My new MBP will randomly ask for my password. It doesn't matter what application I am in, it could be in the middle of watching a dvd. The window will pop up.This is my second MBP, my last one kept crashing, and it was finally replaced. Can anyone help, please?
    Thanks

    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

  • My new MBP is really messed up and I am wondering what I should do.

(sorry for the mess of a post. I just had the good news of having brain cancer and they put this dressing all over my entire head I can barely see, but I want to post this, so I am going to give it a shot.)
I went to see a genius at the local apple store. After spending 1 hour trying to fix all the software and hardware issues, he went to the back of the store, came back and said we are getting you a new MBP with all the equivalant upgrades you had with the other one (the one that had all the problems). I received the new MBP, the same genius said if I leave my old MBP with him he will transfer all the data over and call me when it is done. I got the new MBP, have had it for about 3 weeks and there are more problems than ever. I have no idea what this would do to a new computer but the genius transfered all my data/files/settings over to my new MBP and he did this before or without fixing all the software problems I was having on the computer he transfered my date from.
Now my software updates... is not working. I read the article, trashed 3 apple.softwareupdates.com preferences wit no help. I find out that he said after I asked about iLife; "yes you will get iLife, all Apple computers come with iLife. There is no iLife 09 just my old iLife 08. When I spotlight iLife 09, no iLife comes up only in emails. It does not even pick up my old 08iLife that is in a folder which was transfered over from my old computer.
The manager at the apple store said to install iLife09 from the gray disk. However, for some reason the new updates my computer needs are not triggering the software updater telling me there are new updates. It looks like the genius did an update before I picked it up and it updated one security issue, but no iTunes 9/1/1 or any other updates I should have received when I look at all the recent MBP update (Apple updates only) list.
When I do go to look at the current updates for this computer it brings me to an Apple website that has all my old updates from the old MBP and in a Finder file it shows all the updates from the old computer and just the one that the genius updated for me.
Does any body have any idea what I should do? It is frustrating. I would like to just start from the beginning with the new computer, wipe everything off and install it all new and get rid of all the stuff from my old MBP that was transfered to my new MBP.
    Thank for any help.

I would wipe the hard drive and start from scratch. The only thing I would save from the old comp are documents, movies and music also make sure you have any passwords or mail that you need to keep. I would avoid Time Machine and just do a normal backup. Boot from the installer and go to disk utilities in the menu and erase the hard drive. When that is done do a custom install and avoid any demos and software you don't use. Install QuickTime 7 from the optional installs.
Then manually download and install the OS updates before installing any third party apps avoiding the combos. Depending on your install OS version you may not need all those below.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1061update.htm l
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1062update.htm l
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1018
When you are done run software update and install the security updates only. When you are done with those you can install whatever application updaters there are and then move on to installing your third party apps.
Hope everything works out for you.

  • Why can't I use my old Time Machine BU on TC for my new MBP???

This is getting very frustrating as all the literature says I can use a Time Machine Backup on my TC network for my new MBP just purchased.
The "old" TM backup (BU) was working fine with my MBP laptop that I just replaced (BOTH have Lion 10.8.2 updated).
When I turned on my new MPB -
I went through the system setup which took the information from my old one and carried it over - it worked fine
I then went to the TM system preferences and tried to start with the old TM BU which was called MBP13 sparsebundle
I was never given the window "would you like this computer to inherit the backup history from an older Mac".
I did go to the TM system preferences and clicked "select back up disk. But it selected the disk that the sparsebundle was on and then started a brand new backup. Thats not what I wanted to do.
Remember that I use TC with an external Hard Drive to store the TM BU.... I tried both connecting directly to my new MBP as well as through the network.
What I want to do is just inherit that old TM BU and then go forward.
I really could use some specific help here...
    Thanks in advance.

You can migrate from one machine to another provided both machines are able to boot from the same version of OS X. But that is not the case for you because the two computers have different hardware. The new hardware requires a special build of Mountain Lion. Your old machine uses a different build making its version of Mountain Lion incompatible with the new computer.
Once there is a new public release of Mountain Lion compatible with both computers, then you can install on each as well as migrate from one to the other.
This is a special situation that only occurs when there is a change in hardware that occurs before the public release of OS X has been updated for the new hardware.

  • New MBP Retina Trackpad "jumps", doesn't select...

Has anyone had an issue with the trackpad in the (NEW) MBP (Retina or otherwise)?  There are times when I "Tap" to move the cursor or select something new and it won't do it correctly, or it will jump off the point (or link, or whatever) that I'm trying to select.  Occassionally, it takes a couple tries to get it to operate correctly.
I have tried changing the preferences--going both directions in sensitivity, but nothing seems to help (and that's about the only control we have now in the new OS).  I prefer my setting to "Tap", rather than "click".  If I wanted to make the click, it appears it wouldn't be an issue... I am just trying to keep it like I've had my previous MBP (mid-2009).  Both MBPs have Mountain Lion installed, and the mid-2009 seems to work flawlessly with the "Tap" selected.  Have already visited the Genius Bar twice--they have no solution.
    Any input greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have the same EXACT problem.  It doesn't do it all the time, and sometimes can go almost a minute without noticing it, and the it might do it 5 times in a row.  I finally called Apple and we went through some resetting and such.  It didn't do anything, and he asked me to create a new test user account and see if it happened there, which it did.  He said since I was within the 14 day window, to exchange it and said he set it up in the computer and gave me a number.  I guess I will go to the Apple Store on 14th St. tomorrow and exchange it?  I dunno, I feel stupid exchanging it for such a minor (but definitely annoying) problem.  I imagine a software update could fix it.  I really doubt it's hardware (but the tech seams to think it is).  Regardless, I shouldn't have to deal with this issue for such an expensive laptop

  • Got a new MBP and old external hard drive is too full for backup

I just got a new MBP and got all my data migrated and everything. I plugged my external hard drive in to run a backup, and it apparently is too full to run a backup of the new computer.  Even though all the files are the same (mostly), I guess it's not going to overwrite anything because it's a new computer.  Should I just get a new backup drive and start fresh for this computer.  Should I reformat my old backup drive (and if so, how?)?  Advice?

You should always have two backups of all vital data in any regard. A good 1TB Toshiba USB is $65
If there is NOTHING on the external HD you cant lose, format in disk utility > erase > format MAC OSX extended journaled.
then apply a Time Machine backup to the old HD of your new computer. That will free of a great deal of space.
However you should still have a 2nd backup of data.  2 backups is 1, and 1 is none.

  • A New MBP (and one for the road: any highly-recommended external drive for.

If I order a new MBP 17" for architecture and planning grad program, will SL come installed on the machine? Is SL considered a whole new OS or jut an update to Leopard? I am not even sure I am wording the questions correctly, so I apologize if I am not. I stopped at Tiger because the Leopard OS looked a bit too intimidating for me back then but I think I can deal with it now. Is it a big set-back that I did not learn how to use Leopard and now I am getting SL?
thanks for any help in this area.
I will throw this out there. I also need a decent but very heavy duty external hard drive to use for the work done with CAD. Any recommendations on a top-of-the-line heavy duty external hard drive? I guess the case is the main thing but the drive should be able to take some extra abuse because I baby the MacBook Pros but sometime the external drives get the abuse. I think USB2.0 is good enough for what I need.
    Thanks Again

I would imagine that you could turn up good and bad reports on any drive. I have been highly satisfied with my 3 LaCies, two dating back to 2004. And, LaCie has very good phone support.
I use only clones and drag and drop for data changes between clonings. If I had to choose one method of backing up, then I definitely would use this process. Still, one can take a dual approach other than mine. The idea is to have a clone, which is updated fairly recently, to serve as a fail-safe, system backup, and restoration device. And, one could still use TM for day-to-day backups because of the flexibility it allows in moving backwards in time to retrieve data and because it updates automatically frequently. I want to experiment more with TM. So, I will move to this sort of dual system in the near future--as soon as I figure out which partition on my main external I can do without.
For cloning, I like SuperDuper because it has the ability to make incremental clones--thus, shortening the recloning process significantly. CCC is good, but I have never used it. Actully, Disk Utility is a highly respectable cloner, but it does not have as many options as the others, including not having the ability to make incremental clones.

  • I currently have a mbp with two internal hard drives ( took super drive out) which for a video editor like myself is a dream I can edit video anywhere, my question can I order a new mbp with 2 internal flash drives?

I currently have a mbp 2.3 gighuz intel core 7 16 gig of ram with two internal hard drives ( took super drive out) which for a video editor like myself is a dream I can edit video anywhere, my question can I order a new mbp with 2 internal flash drives?

I wouldn't think so because the newer ones with Retina displays don't have an internal SuperDrive that can be replaced. Therefore the newer logic boards wouldn't have the two SATA/SATA Express connections on the logic board.
At least that was the case as of 2012. I've seen newer ones and they also don't have a SuperDrive.

While looking to upgrade to a newer MBP, found out latest version of iTunes does not support wired syncing of iCal and contacts. Syncing of these must be done through iCloud. When you say wired syncing, are you meaning between an iphone and your mac?

  • New MBP - Best way to care for battery?

Not sure if this is necessary anymore, but I am receiving my new MBP in the mail later today. What is the best way to care for the battery? Should I plug the MBP into the wall for an amount of time before turning it on, or at least wait until it is fully charged before turning it on for the first time? Is anything like that even necessary anymore?
    Thanks,
    Keith

    Here's what Apple recommends:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
Best use is frequently and lightly. Be sure to calibrate your battery every two months or so:

  • Bought logic pro 9.1.7 online for new MBP with mountain Lion, but asked for serial number. Where could I get SN?

How can I get the SN for an online version of Logic Pro bought from AppStore?
    Thanks!

good news. The trick is to delete the "logic pro 9" by dragging the App from Finder->Applications to trash bin, and re-doanload and re-install it again. Now it's happily downloading 19GB contents without asking for SN.
Thanks Pancenter for your message. This is is brand-new MBP with Retina display, and I didn't find or delete and reg file for logic. Simply delete the app under installation (not in the launch pad, see above) and re-install. It works for the 2nd try. It could be a SW integration bug.

  • Time for a new MBP...

Please forgive my post as I'm sure people are tired of this question, but I'd like to ask with details about how I work.
My current MBP is an early 2010 with the following:
    3.06 GHZ Core 2 Duo
    8 GIG ram - 1067 MHZ DDR3
NVIDIA GoForce 9600M GT 512 MB
I bought this to edit video, and it has worked great. Just a side note, I bought this and 1 month later the new i7's came out!! Ugh.
Anyway, as I was saying, it's working fine, but now that I'm using FCPX and Motion, it's acting a bit tired, and I usually get a new computer every 2 years anyway.
My question is this, will the new TOP of the line MBP provide a noticable difference from my current MBP? Or should I be leaning towards a new iMac?
    Thanks
    Tony

Sig obliquely raises a good point ie. iMacs do not travel well.  The issue you have to decide is performance versus portability.  You would gain a lot more performance with an iMac for the work you are doing than with a newer MBP and it would be less expensive!
You might consider installing a SSD to speed up your current MBP.  This might be one of the few instance that would make them cost effective.
Look at this link. It might help you gage what kind of performance increases you can expect.  The OWC website  also has bench test results

    Ciao.
