Selecting playlist to sync

When I tried to sync after adding 6 songs, a pop-up box told me I was trying to sync 361 GB when I only had 3.7 GB of free space. So I deleted some of the playlists to create some room. When I then tried to sync, all 290 some songs were wiped off the ipod so now I have zero songs on the ipod.
When I go back and try and sync now, I getr a pop-up box that tells me that some of the playlists selected for syncing aren't available anymore. Tried looking in itunes help, but it is more like itunes ****, no mention of possible fixes or even how to select which playlists to sync.
Anyone have any help?
Thanks

Thanks for trying to help. I have a 2GB iPod. I just DL 7.3 version of iTunes the other day.
When I have iTunes open, I have (across the top)
"File, edit, controls, view, store, advanced, help"
I do not have the Summary, Music, etc that you mentioned in your last post.
When I click on "Edit", then Preferences, I see a pop up box with the following tabs,
"General, Podcast, Playback, Sharing, iPhone, Apple TV, Store, Advanced, Parental Control"
Which tab would I use to select which playlists to syn and which ones not to sync? Or is that somewhere else?
Thanks again!

If you are using iTunes 7 left click on the iPod, this should bring up the iPod preference tabs in the main pane. The first tab is Summary and along the top you'll see one labelled Music as Lougoose has described. Right clicking brings up a small menu which I believe is what you are seeing. The link Jeff pointed you has been around for a while and describes how to change the settings in an earlier version of iTunes, for example it works this way in iTunes 6.

  • Selecting playlists checkboxes to sync does not always select/deselect.

When I plug in my iPad to my MBP and try to select playlists to sync, the check boxes don't always work when clicked on. I have to click it a few times for it to select/deselect a checkbox. I have all OS X updates installed and I'm still running Snow Leopard.

Solved this by noticing in about:sync-log that one home2 for some reason it got stuck and did not sync. Using the manual sync facility (the small icon which you can find by modifying your toolbar) solved everything and suddenly everything sync'ed to everything!

  • Ipod cannot be updated because all of playlists for syncing no longer exist

I think i delted the playlist for my ipod and now i get this message and my ipod wont update and i have no clue what to do

This problem arises when you use 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' to sync your iPod and then delete the playlist it has been updating from. Most people use this setting when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library. If you haven't deliberately chosen this method, adding a smaller iPod to a larger library for the first time causes iTunes by default to make a new playlist called something along the lines of "Owner's iPod Selection". If you for any reason delete it, you will not be able to sync your iPod.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod to make it the first playlist in the source list. You can make this a normal playlist and drag whatever you want to it or you can make it a random Smart playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano). Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply:

  • How to keep a playlist in sync with iPhone over iCloud

I love being able to store all my music in the cloud with iCloud. The only problem is that I want to use iCloud to keep a selected playlist in sync with my iPhone because I only want about 500 of my 2000 songs stored on my iPhone. It is easy to do this if I use WiFi sync but I would like to be able to access my other songs when I am on Wifi through iCloud because really, thats what I'm paying for with iCloud. Has anyone found a work around to this issue?
    Thanks

With iTunes Match your music is simultaneously downloaded to your phone when you play it.  As soon as you play a song not on your playlist, it will be downloaded too.  There isn't a way at the present time to keep only certain songs on the phone, then only stream the rest.  Perhaps the ability to do this will be included in a future update.  If you would like to see this change you can let Apple know here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/icloud.html.

  • HT1386 How can I sync only selected playlists from my library in iTunes to iPhone?

Option to sync only selected playlists is grayed out in iTunes for my iPhone. How can I make it so I don't have to sync my entire library?

    know this might sound silly
    but make sure that
    1) sync music is checked
    2) you have playlist with songs in them
    3) your songs have some sort of sorting form on them (artist, genre, album, etc.)
    also try
rebooting pc and device and reconnecting
if all else fails, redownload itunes

  • "Sync" is not working correctly.  selected playlists even when the "Sync selected playlists" was selected and playlists were checked in the music iTunes library.  Do I have a defective iPod touch?

Ever since I bought my ipod touch 4th generation, IOS 4G, 8GB in January 2011, it would not sync selected playlists.
This is even when I have checked 3 things:
    1.  Under Summary/Options, I've checked "Manually manage music and videos" and "sync only checked songs and video."
    2.  When I go to the Music tab and attempt to sync, I have already chosen "selected playlists, artists, albums and genres"
    3.  When I click on "Sync" a window comes up and says "Are you sure you want to sync music?  All existing content on the iPod will be removed and replaced with songs and playlists from your iTunes library."

Sync should be an automatic feature that can be triggered manually. Although, I have a two Shuffles, which are obviously not Touches, so they might be different.
If you have your iPod set to manually manage music, the option to sync only checked songs should not do anything. You have to drag songs manually to the iPod on the sidebar to add music (I've created playlists of only songs I want, then I shift-click the whole thing and drag all of the songs at once to update them, that way I don't have to remember what goes where), and you have to manually select and delete songs from the iPod's 'Music' library on the sidebar to remove them.
As for syncing the files, on my shuffles, they sync individual songs (for Get Info information changes ONLY) automatically every time I plug them into iTunes, and again if I make any changes to the Get Info stuff while they're plugged in. For example, if I added a song to my iPod playlist, it wouldn't sync it, but if I changed the genre of a song that's already on it, it will automatically sync.
       Good luck.

  • Syncing selected playlists set but get more than are checked

Recently changed to syncing selected playlists to make room on iPod as library got too big. Problem is that list of playlists on iPod is different from those that are checked in settings for iPod. More are on iPod than are checked.
I thought it might be because one of my smart playlists uses another as one of the rules but one of the extras is not in any other playlist. Any ideas on what causes this? I opened up 15GB of space on iPod so space is not critical anymore.

I tried the restore button which returned the error "The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1418)". After googling this I followed these instructions on the apple website: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304508
Completed all steps from 1-5 and tried to restore it again, the same error message ("1418") appears.

  • I am trying to sync a playlist to my Nano,  but when I click on the Music tab at the top, it will not allow me to select the option Selected Playlist, Artists, etc.  I cannot un-check the Entire Music library option and check the Selected Artist - on

I am trying to sync a playlist to my Nano,  but when I click on the Music tab at the top,
it will not allow me to select the option Selected Playlist, Artists, etc.  I cannot un-check the Entire Music library
option and check the Selected Artist … one.
I have changed the Sync option to Manually sync, but that does not help.
How can I change this to the second option?
    Thanks.

There is a checkbox above those two options for how to sync.  It says Sync Music; it enables automatic syncing.  That box needs to be checked before you can select from the two options for how automatic syncing is performed.
NOTE:  If the iPod is current set up to Manually manage music [and videos], checking that Sync Music box replaces its current content with content from your iTunes library, based on how automatic syncing is set up on that screen.
So, if your goal is to add ONE playlist to an iPod that is managed manually, you do not want to do this because iTunes will erase the iPod's current content and replace it with just that ONE selected playlist (and whatever else you select on that Music settings screen).
Instead, if the iPod currently uses the manual setting, you need to add playlists manually to the iPod (not use the automatic syncing setting).  Please post back with more details about your situation.

  • All songs synced when selected playlists, artists and genres is used

For some reason when I check check "selected playlists, artists and genres" and uncheck the artists I do not want on the iphone they are not removed.
Reading the forums it was indicated that songs that are part of a playlist will not be removed so I deleted all the playlists and the songs/artists are still on the iphone.
I then removed all songs and added them back in but they are still there.
I even disabled genius and the artists/songs are still there.
I know I can manually manage the music but unchecking the artists would be very unwieldy.
The main summary screen is set to open itunes when this iphone is connected and nothing else and the music tab does not have the automatically fill free space with songs checked.

Just installed iTunes 10 in the hopes that this would resolve the issue but to no avail.
Help please I just want to sync my phone and leave off artists I uncheck (multiple albums and compilations)

Ringtones are currently a one-time only download. Have you not got a copy of them on your computer and/or on a backup ? If not then you can try contacting iTunes support and asking for a re-download, but they are under no obligation to let you you re-download them : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Express Lane, then iTunes > iTunes Store

  • Unable to sync selected playlists

I have a number of playlists that I use as utilities to accomplish sorting. I do not want to display them on my iPod. In previous versions of iTunes, I was able to select the playlists to sync. In 7.1.1 and at least one version prior, this has not worked for me. I have tried to check everything and sync and then go back and uncheck the playlists I want to exclude, but this has not been successful.
    I would appreciate any help.
    Thanks -
    Dudley Warner

I seem to have "solved" my quandary, though I'm not pleased with the reasons. The culprits were video files cross-pollinating my smart playlists. It would seem that if a video is synched to one's iPod, any playlists in which said video appears also get synched to the iPod, even if the playlist is unchecked on the iPod's Music settings page in iTunes.
Alas, it's not as simple as just unchecking "Include music videos" under the list of playlists, because this would not preclude other videos and movies from ending up in a smart playlist if they otherwise met the given criteria. Once I added the criteria "Kind/does not contain/video" and "Kind/does not contain/movie" to the "smart" playlists in question, all videos and movies were filtered out, and the unwanted playlists subsequently disappeared from the iPod.
I hope this sheds some light, Dudley.

  • ITunes not syncing selected playlists, choosing songs from all playlists

I have some smaller iPods that I use on random occasions. When I sync them, I choose the following options:
    Sync Music:
    Selected Playlists, artists, genres
    Music Videos - Not Checked
Automatically fill free space with songs - Checked
I have two playlists from which I wish a selection to be made, which exceeds the size of the iPod (they were designed for larger devices synced with this machine). When I attempt to Sync, I get a message saying that the iPod is too small, and would I like iTunes to automatically choose songs to sync. If I click no, the sync is canceled. If I click yes to have a subset of my two playlists automatically choosen, the ipod will sync, but then iTunes clears all of my selected playlists and starts syncing songs from all playlists.
This seems like a bug in iTunes to me, as it is not performing the requested options. Has anyone else experienced this, or know how to get it fixed? Or to get a bug report sent in to Apple? I have been going all over the place on their support page, and since this isn't an issue with the iPod, but with iTunes, I haven't been able to find a support avenue.

iTunes not syncing selected playlists, choosing songs from all playlists
You have it selected to *sync selected playlists* and those playlists are not syncing to the iPod?
however this seems to be very counter-intuitive behavior for iTunes
It can be kind of confusing.
I suggest it's not a bug in that it is acting as it's supposed to.
The option (Fill free space) could be made clearer. Perhaps if they added "with songs at random from the entire library" or somehow added an option to select what the free space will be filled with.)
    1) The fact that iTunes it is not obeying the selected options on the screen
    Not supposed to do that.
If the playlists all fit and there is free space, what would iTunes use to fill the free space if it only used selected items?
    2) iTunes is allowing users construct an unhonorable set of choices out of four options. If "Selected playlists, artists and genres" is not compatible with "Automatically fill free space," then that option should be grayed out.
    It is compatible.
If there is free space after your selections are added, what should iTunes use to fill the free space? It shouldn't fill the free space with stuff already on the iPod.

  • Sync all songs but select playlists

I am now running iTunes 9 and I can't seem to figure out how to do this. In the old version you could select to sync checked songs and then go to the iPod and select which playlists you wanted. Now it's either all songs and playlists or select playlists. Is there a way to do what I want?

Sync all songs but select playlists.
If you sync all, you don't select playlists.
Now it's either all songs and playlists or select playlists.
And that's how it has always been.
Is there a way to do what I want?
It's exactly the same as it was.
    Select the iPod in iTunes.
    Click the Summary tab.
    Tick *Sync only checked items*.
    Click the Music tab.
Select *Sync music* and select *Selected playlists* then tick the playlists you want.
Note that *Sync only checked items* doe snot mnena you cannot sync selected playlists or everything. It simply means if you have items unchecked and they are included in any playlists, they will not sync.
