Selecting Text - Adobe Reader 9

Hi there,
On older versions of Adobe Reader, I used to be able to scan a letter received in a foreign language as a PDF, then select the text from it and paste it into a Language tool and convert it into English. However, in Adobe Reader 9, I can scan the letter as PDF but it will not allow me to select the text, it will only allow me to make a selection as an image or picture. Any ideas as to how I can get around this?
Many thanks for your help,
Jay.

Something other than Reader must have been involved in the process. You'll need to look in to whatever application is being used to create the PDF since Reader can't even do that.
If you want to post one of these problem PDF's that would help but it'll probably be the same answer.

You don't need to reinstall Preview.  You need to remove the leftover crud and cruft that Adobe Reader dropped on your system.  Google for "remove Adobe Reader OS X"

• Certification filter for correct selection in Adobe Reader

Sometimes a PDF form must be signed using a certificate emitted by a list of specific CAs that destination person trusts in.
To prevent errors in selecting the proper certificate from several installed certificates with private key, it would be very interesting that Adobe Reader will be able to filter in the interface those certificates emitted by one o several CA´s provided in a property of the sign field of the pdf form.
Is this functionality available in Adobe Reader?

• Adobe Reader 9 highlights text when scrolling in terminal server

Running a terminal server with WIndow 2003.  Have Adobe 9 Reader installed.  When a pdf is opened, it will look correct.  However, when one uses the scroll bar on the right to see more of the document, text can be highlighted and change colors constantly when scrolling.
Test it outside of terminal server and it works fine.  This issue did not happen with other versions of Reader.  I have attached two samples one clean and one highlighted.
Any help is appreciated

Very cool. Thanks for the info!

Okay. Here is what I found. These settings are changed\saved under the User settings in the registry. Here is the key the changes are made to:
HKCU\Software\Adobe\Adobe Reader\9.0\Originals
When "NONE" is selected from Adobe Reader - Edit - Preferences - Page Display - Rendering, three DWORD values are added to the above mentioned registry key. These are:
Value Name - Value Data
*bAntialiasText - 0
benableDDR - 0
iAntialiasThreshold - 12*
I have added these lines to a login script that adds the necessary DWORD values to default the "Rendering" to NONE.
*reg add "HKCU\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Originals" /V bAntialiasText /T REG_DWORD /F /D 0
reg add "HKCU\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Originals" /V benableDDR /T REG_DWORD /F /D 0
reg add "HKCU\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\9.0\Originals" /V iAntialiasThreshold /T REG_DWORD /F /D 12*
Cheers!

• Copying text in Reader 9 in pdf that was set to not allow copy in Acrobat 8

i have acrobat 8 professional and set a document to be password protected and not allow copying of selected text.
in Reader 9 i am able to select and copy text after providing the password.
why doesn't Reader 9 honor all the secuity set in Acrobat 8?  seems like a gaping security hole.  and i have one not very happy client.

yes, i presume that is true.
the viewers are already bound by an NDA, so the attempt is to just put up reasonable barriers to the easy grabbing of proprietary information.
as we all know, there are lots of ways people can steal information regardless of the safeguards, but hopefully a combination of reasonable safeguards, contractual compliance, authenticated and logged access, and choosing partners wisely will minimize the chances for real losses.

• Adobe Reader 10.1 won't work in OS 10.5.8

Now that I've installed Adobe Reader 10.1 I'm unable to read or download pdfs in Safari. The screen simply turns grey. I've tried discarding it and reinstalling it numerous times, but no improvement. I've tried switching to Preview as my primary pdf reader, but some items say that Adobe Reader is required. I've tried following the instructions on Adobe's help page, which say to go to the Help menu within Adobe Reader and select Repair Adobe Reader Installation, but that item does not appear on the menu. Can anyone help?

Hi Robin,
Thanks for detailed replies to my questions. I think we are quite near to the solution here
Do you have Acrobat installed. Any previous version? Or do you have any other version of Adobe Reader. For this check your applications folder. Reader X is present as /Applications/Adobe Reader.app whereas previous versions like 9, 8 or 7 are present in respective folders in /Applications like /Applications/Adobe Reader 9/Adobe Reader.app. If any such versions are present (for Reader only), you can trash them. Note: Do Not trash Acrobat.
Next go to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and delete AdobePDFViewer.plugin file present there.
Since ftp is not working for you, go to http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/ and in Step 1 select OS as Mac OS Intel 10.5.8 - 10.6.7. In Step 2 select Language as English and in Step 3 select Reader X (10.1) English for Mac Intel. Now click download and save "AdbeRdr1010_en_US.dmg" to your hard disk.
Double click this downloaded file to mount it as disk image on desktop. Open this disk and Run Adobe Reader X Installer.pkg. This will install Reader X in /Applications/Adobe Reader.app
Go to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and now again check version of AdobePDFViewer.plugin. This should be 10.1 now, that is this plugin will now be owned by Reader X
Now try opening pdf files in Reader application and Safari. Hope it works.
Thanks,
Karan

• Scrolling selected text with Indesign CS6 to show different font style

Hi, I recently found I could highlight a paragraph and using font character style I could scroll through fonts changing whole paragraphs, I can't remember how I did this, I know it's a new feature with CC, I'm on CS6

Select the text you want to change. Click your cursor after the font name in the field. Press the up or down arrows, and you can see the selected text change.

• Using adobe reader x on new iPad w safari

Just installed newest adobe reader X on my new iPad.  Reader can open and read a PDF file. However, when I try to use the Safari "open with" command to select the adobe reader, it will not open a PDF displayed in the browser.  What am I doing wrong?

Pat,
attached is a copy of the document as I was able to download it from my
desktop PC.  it has a pdf extension.
here is a copy of the URL -
http://bnb.jewelrymakingmagazines.com/~/media/Files/PDF/Free%20Patterns/2012/BNB-PA0512FRE E.ashx
the document, as displayed, does NOT show the .pdf extension ... but when I downloaded the file from my desktop pc  and renamed it with a pdf extension, it wound up with two file exensions in the name - .pdf.pdf  .  so the .pdf file extension was there, but just not displaying properly on the website.
Thank you so much for offering to help.

• Adobe reader for iOS doesn't show markups?

I have pdf documents with markups prepared on Windows 7. When I upload to iOS from drop-box, then only the original document show, no markups. However, from the same drop-box, the Android tables displays all markups?
P.S. have this problem since we switched to iOS tables. Reader is up to date, have downloaded the latest update yesterday.
Any suggestions?

Thank you for the response, but I have since discovered the PDF is opened in a non Adobe app, probably that of Apple as you suggest.
If I select an alternative app from within the PDF reader, and select the Adobe reader, all markups display correctly.
I was not aware that there possibly could be a build-in PDF reader in iOS.
I was caught in this trap since the adobe reader does not have build in facilities to access the drop-box. Neither has drop-box, as with the Android app, the prompt to select an appropriate app for the document selected.

• Cannot install updated Adobe Reader

I use Windows Vista, and when trying to update, received an error.  I uninstalled the version I had so I could install the latest version (X), but althoug it would download, it would not install.  Also I was unable to reinstall the earlier version that I had. The message received today says "download timeout" even though it has only been a matter of seconds. Any suggestions as to what the problem is & how I can correct it?

I work in Desktop Support for the Forest Service & I have found that sometimes when uninstalling an application that the un-install did not correctly remove the application from the computer. In those type of cases the Windows registry still has remnants of the application so when you try and re-install the application it won't install because of thos remnants (many times when you look in Control Panel--- Add/Remove Programs, it will appear that the progrm is not installed!)
You can use a tool provided by Microsoft to remove those remnants called msicuu2.exe I'm not sure where to get it, so just Google that name and you should be able to find it.
This tool will show all the applications currently installed as well as the application which is really only remnants in the registry. He will select ONLY Adobe reader in this utility and remove it (IF it appears as one of the applications which is in his computer). If Adobe Reader does NOT appear as one of the applications which can be removed then we have a differnt problem and need to proceed with further troubleshooting.

• Is Adobe Reader really this bad?

Hi,
I've been working on a PDF for a while now, but I have found Adobe Reader to be completely useless. In fact it has hindered my progress greatly. I have to ask if anyone else has found this or if for whatever reason I have just been cursed with these issues. I find many Adobe products useful, but this is too much.
The biggest problem is that while editing text Adobe Reader will often crash and everything I have edited to that point is lost. When this happens I get an error saying,
The instruction at 0x3a32333a referenced memory at 0x3a32333a. The
memory could not be written.

Click on OK to terminate the program.
___________________________________________________________
I have no idea what that means and I have not found anything mentioning it. I have tried re-installing Adobe Reader but nothing changed.
Other problems I have -
The program constantly seems to be updated information even when I haven't edited anything; the cursor is always flashing between the pointer arrow and the windows blue loading circle, and the program is slow as molasses. when I enter text it takes up to 6 seconds for it to appear on screen. Not to mention the terribly unreliable and glitchy scrolling. I have to spend multiple minutes scrolling up and down hoping that it will stop on where I need to edit.
Whenever I am attempting to edit a text field and I scroll up to find the information I need that is earlier on the PDF it sucks my view back down to the text field. I recognize this may be an intended feature but with my other problems it is extremely irritating.
I don't know if my version of Adobe Reader is corrupted or something. It's been doing this since I installed it, and I'm just trying to fill out my Eagle Scout workbook. I am extremely frustrated and tired of using this program, but it doesn't seem there is much of a choice when it comes to editing PDFs.
I can't imagine that this is the experience most other people have with this program because I know that Adobe is very proud of their software's quality.
I'm using an HP ProBook 4545s running Windows 8.1 Pro
System Specs -
Processor: AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 2.70 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (3.45 GB usable)
System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
I can't imagine it's a hardware problem because I can't imagine that Adobe Reader with it's homely GUI and seemingly simple construct is very demanding on a system, but it seems good practice to include all the information I can.
Thanks for any answers that can be provided, I really need this program to be able to work because I have to complete this workbook and time is running out.

Well if that is the case then it certainly answers my question. Although it raises another, I'm using Adobe Reader XI and I can most definitely open, view, and edit a PDF... well that may be saying a bit much since it does allow for entering text, exporting, and things such as that, but it doesn't do it real well..
If the answer really is I'm trying to use it for something it's not meant for I can accept that.
So I'd ask, what can I do in my situation then? I don't need a program for a very long. I only have about 24 days until I can't even work on this project anymore. Is there another program I can use that can edit a PDF that's free?

Hi raptorsama,
Is there any specific error that comes?
You might need to navigate to ''C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader'', then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement.
If this does not work, then follow these standard steps as given below:
> Enable the hidden Admin Account on Windows 7 (Ref: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-wi ndows-vista/ )
> Disable all Non-Microsoft Startup Services
(Ref : http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/disable-startup-items-services-windows.html )
> Disable all the Antivirus softwares like CA, Norton,Mc Afee etc. temporarily from the computer.
> Reboot and try installing in the new enabled Admin user account and check
You can also go for a repair option by selecting 'Repair Adobe Reader Installation' option under the Help menu.
