Selecting useless stuff to trash

Best way to select stuff to trash, what is ?
Does Snow Leopard need a software "cleaner" other than
periodic checks via Disk Utility ?
What will Time Machine do to what's on the external drive ?
(i.e. the old stufff)
Can Time Machine be turned off and on ?
(Tiger 10.4.11 is on WD 2T external drive.  Snow Leopard  10.6.3. is on a disc waiting to be installed.
SL 10.6.3. is the most current OS this MBPro  [2 GHz Intel Core Duo, 1 G 667MHz DDR2SDRAM]
can process.  I'm told.  I think by Apple, the Store.
After gratefully receiving some varieties of advice, I've decided to Start Up on the Passport for a
while, to learn some stuff, and save up money to buy software for routine backup if necessary,
(although in 30+ years no Mac has failed me nor have I lost anything).
This Apple Support Community format is a handicap to folks with low level expertise.
and, I suspect, especially folks with old hardware and software.
So I'm going to wander the web to learn what is GUI, to understand partitions,
what is dmg ?
and, as in the question above,  what to delete from Tiger.
My G3 has both OS 9 and OS 10, I kept 9 for a printer driver and to avoid messing with content.
I'm thinking that I can use the passport for the old Word for Mac and the Canon inkjet that is
compatible with the laptop, and use the internal drive with Snow Leopard for Firefox.
Thanks folks, especially noondaywitch,  for attentive support.

This is more an edit than a reply, but edit is not an option.

  • HT1526 deleting selected files (only) from trash

How do I securely and permanently delete selected files from the trash bin?

You shouldn't put files you may want to keep in the Trash.  It's not a storage location.  Make a separate folder on the Desktop.  I used to have one that I named Waste Basket (I even gave it a special icon).  I put files there when I wasn't 100% sure about deleting it, but I wanted to get it out of the way.
But to answer your question, there is no way selectively delete what is in the Trash.  You'd have to drag the items you want to keep out of the Trash, empty the Trash, and drag them back into the Trash.

Thanks for the feedback, the question is that it will syn all the folders that I have checked, and its total up to 6000 photos which was taking me one whole day to syn. I am seeking is there away that what have already in my Iphone will not be delected if I did not checked on the next syn, and only add in the new album that was checked.

  • Any way to delete useless stuff in bookmark menu?

Since Firefox pretty much destroyed itself with version 29, I'm having to use Safari, which I've never particularly liked.
One of the main things I can't stand is all the useless stuff at the top of the bookmark menu, which makes the bookmark menu incredibly "wide" and unwieldy to use.
I have lots of folders, so a slender main bookmark menu helps navigate better.
In the old days, with Camino (sigh...my favorite browser ever), I could just click on "open package contents", go to the "English.lproj" folder, double click on "mainmenu.nib" and tweak everything to my own satisfaction, shortening text and deleting stuff I never used.
Is there any way to do that with Safari?  When I looked at "package contents" I found the similarly named folder and file, but nothing would open it to change things.
I'd love to get rid of that whole mess about "reading list"...I don't and WON'T ever use that.  Takes up way too much room, especially on a laptop screen.
I'd also love to re-do the text about bookmarking tabs...I don't do that, either.
If those two things and their corresponding dividers could be eliminated, I'd be happy, as the resulting bookmark menu would be only as wide as my longest folder name.
I've tried to illustrate what I'm talking about with this screenshot.  If everything in the red lines could be eliminated, I'd be a happy camper...that would reduce the width of the bookmark menu to a manageable size.
    Any ideas?

I was afraid of that.  Bummer that Mac has ceased to be as "tweakable" as it once was.  That was always one of the main reasons I loved the OS, there were so many ways to make it "yours."  If there was something you didn't really like, it was most likely very changeable.  Just seems to get blander and flatter-looking with each new iteration.
I'm old enough to remember Kaleidoscope with great fondness ;-)

  • How to undrag stuff from trash but it says not enough disk space now i am stuck

Hi- I was trying to free up some disk space by removing rejected movie clips to trash.  when i did, i noticed a project had the warning exclamaiton point and it wouldn't play.  my event had been erased.  when i tried to drag it out of trash, it said i didn't have enough disk space.  so now i am stuck.  i can't get it out of trash, i can't erase other things because stuff i want in trash is there.  any suggestions would be helpful.
    thanks.

I can't open either one from the disc. I have to drag em, and one document has to make a copy because the actual file from the disc is too big for the hard drive =/

  • Throwing stuff in trash makes loud awful white noise sound???

Just in the last few days when I throw something in the trash, instead of the normal sound it is set up to make, it will have a very loud fuzzy white noise type sound. The only way to get it to stop is to restart or shut down. You can't turn it down with the volume either, no response to that. What is going on? Is there something I can do to correct the problem? It doesn't do it all the time either???thanks

it's very interesting that you're experiencing this while playback.
I've (and many others....) got the same problem during recording, which by the way is a very painful experience or everybody that's wearing headphones..... normally people get the error message "disk is too slow" when that problem occurs!
Since there is no official and unofficial cause for this problem and also no solution currently it's hard to say what's behind it.
the only one thing i tried yesterday was playing around with the buffer size. in my case i experienced that crash yesterday a couple of times (in like 1-4 minute distances) when my buffer size was set to 128 samples. when i used a buffer size of 64 sample i dindn't get this error anymore. (don't ask me why, i can't explain it. another interesting thing is that the cpu usage doesn't show more when using only 64 samples)
try changing the buffer size, maybe it helps.....

  • Selectively deleting trash items

Hi All - I'm new to this forum and a Mac newbie. I working my way through all the Windows>>Mac user transitions. One thing I can't find out how to do is to delete only selected items in my trash bucket. I either have to delete all or none of them. I now have several very large files in there that I want removed from my computer. Other than removing all trash contents to a separate folder and then adding only those large files back to the trash to delete, is there a way I can delete only those selected large files from the trash bucket?
Thanks for your help with this.

There is a way to delete one or more items specificly in the Trash, but being new to Mac (means you are probably new to UNIX) and the following may be dangerous. So enter at your own risk.
    1. Open Terminal application form /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
    2. Once in terminal, perform the following command exactly as written. Where the command reads "yourusername" insert the name or your account.
    cd /Users/yourusername/.Trash <Enter>
    ls -la <Enter>
Now look for the file that you're wanting to delete from trash. If you don't see the file/s you are looking for, go no further and post back as you're probably in the wrong location.
If you do see the files in terminal that you're wanting to remove from trash, then perform the following commands. Where the command reads filename.ext replace that with the name and extension of the file you are removing.
    rm filename.ext <Enter>
    ls -la <Enter>
    Is the file still there?
Post back if you have any problems, remember using terminal can be dangerous if you are not sure what you are doing.

  • Emptying trash for selected volumes only

I want to empty trash but not on all volumes.

Hi, Bill. Welcome to the Discussions.
As baltwo noted, Mac OS X has a separate Trash, not only for every volume, but for every user on that volume. What you see in Trash is the union of all the different trashes associated with your account on every mounted volume. See my "Solving Trash Problems" FAQ for additional information.
The shareware utility Smart Trash will permit one to selectively empty the various Trashes. I've not used it, but it has received decent reviews.
PS: Do not use Trash as temporary storage! Do not put something in the Trash unless you mean to throw it away immediately.
    Good luck!

  • How do I uninstall useless applications?

I am not a regular user of OSX and it seems this is an uncommon question as well. Sorry if it is obvious to the mac-ees here. But...
I got recent updates on my Macbook and as a result a crapton of useless stuff was installed. I also want to clean out the other useless stuff.
So how do I uninstall the following useless apps:
    iTunes
    AppStore
    AddressBook
    Safari
    FrontRow
It seems that even if I "Move to Trash" some of these remain or return on next update.
I want it to make them go away permanently.
    Please help.

    Thanks Matt
If that were actually true in all cases and disk space were not limited on the laptop then I would happily go with it. But I plug in devices and itunes jumps up and wants me to get an account.
When I want to email I do not use the application that came with the computer. It's lame. So I have this address book get into my stuff occasionally. Sometimes when I want to import contacts via VCF files.
Did I forget MobileMe in my post? I think I did. What does this do anyway? I need no reason to put my information anywhere but on the computer or external drive. What is on my phone and ipad belong there and I sync information selectively and intelligently without itunes (which doesn't effectively work with non Apple phones)
Safari? Really? It also needs to go.
Appstore? I write or download good applications myself. Why would I need appstore? I certainly have no desire nor ability to sell there. So, it also has no use.
These listed apps should not be part of the OS. If they are then somebody needs to learn effective modular object oriented design.

  • Why would there be both cyrillic and asian writing in my selection for "artists" when scrolling through my "device" under artists, for my device "music" tab, but not listed anywhere that I can find in my Itunes library? Is there reason for concern?

I was perusing my music selections in my itunes account, clearing out useless stuff I don't listen to, and under "My device," under the "music" tab, in "Artists,"
i happened upon what is an artist's name (or a place holder for an artist's name written in cyrillics. Another artist's name two spaces down from that one is written in some form of japanese/chinese. Is this something I can ascertain what it is on my own, is this something that is common, or is this some sort of thing launched by the bad guys to hack my computer?
I cannot find any correlating artists when attempting to locate these "artists," in my Itunes library. This is some freaky stuff!
    HELP!

Possibilities include source files with multiple tags, tags in Reverse Unicode and/or ID3v2.4 format. Select one of the entries so that you can identify which track it belongs to and then investigate back in iTunes. You may want to try using the option Convert ID3 Tags... > None a few times followed by Convert ID3 Tags... > v2.3. This will lose any currently embedded artwork but should mean that the tag data is read consistently by iTunes and any devices.

  • Clean install selective restore from time machine backup

    Hi,
My harddisk crashed, and I have just installed a new harddrive.
I have just installed a fresh OS and am wondering if it is possible to selective restore stuff from my time machine backup.
I only want to restore some of my data file.
When I plugin my time machine backup. the preference pane does recognize that i have previous backup. But when I go into time machine state, the older stuff doesn't show up.
how can i get my old files back?
I can't see anything from before I changed my harddisk and did a few reinstall of the OS.

    Restoring specific files or folders
While your backup disk is connected, click the Time Machine icon in the Dock and the Time Machine restore interface appears. You can literally see your windows as they appeared "back in time." Note: If you use FileVault, you cannot browse for individual items in your Home folder. However, you can restore all files and folders by using the Restore System from Backup feature of the Mac OS X Installer.
You can use the timeline on the right side of the window to reach a certain point back in time (the timeline shows the times of all backups on your backup disk). If you don’t know exactly when you deleted or changed a file, you can use the back arrow to let Time Machine automatically travel through time to show you when that folder last changed.
You can also perform a Spotlight search in the Time Machine Finder Window search field to find a file. Simply type the Spotlight search field and use the back arrow to have Time Machine search through your backups to find what you are looking for.
Before you restore a file, you can also use Quick Look to preview a file to make sure its the one you want. Highlight the file and press the Space Bar to bring up a preview.
To restore, select the file/folder and click the "Restore" button. The file will automatically be copied to the desktop or appropriate folder.  If the file you are restoring has another file in the same location with the same name, you will be prompted to choose which file to keep or keep both.
Restoring your entire system from a backup
If you are restoring a backup made by a Mac to the same Mac
With your backup disk connected, start up your Mac from your Mac OS X v10.5 or Mac OS X v10.6 installation disc. After starting up, use the Restore System from Backup feature of the Mac OS X Installer.
Note: If "You can't restore this backup because it was created by a different model of Mac" appears when restoring a backup that was made on a different Mac, follow the onscreen instructions.
If you are restoring a backup made by one Mac to a completely different Mac
Important: If the backup you are about to restore is from a completely different Mac, use the Migration Assistantto transfer data from the backup, as described in the next section.
Restoring a Time Machine backup on a new Mac
When you buy a new Mac, you can transfer all of your applications, files, settings, and other information from a Time Machine backup you've already made.
You will be asked if you want to transfer files when you start up your new Mac for the first time. Or, you can use the Migration Assistant (located in Applications/Utilities).
If you use a Time Capsule, see Restoring files from a Time Capsule backup.
Deleting data from a Time Machine backup
To delete all backups of one or more items from a Time Machine backup, follow these steps:
Click the Time Machine icon on your Dock to enter the Time Machine restore interface.
Click on the item you would like to delete. Command-click to select multiple items.
Control-click (or right click) the highlighted item(s) and select "Delete All Backups of..." from the contextual menu, or select "Delete all backups of..." from the Action Item menu.
Authenticate with an administrator password when prompted.
Important:  Do not use the Finder to move to the items to the Trash, or to move or delete items in your Time Machine backup repository. The folder containing your Time Machine backup repository is called "Backups.backupd" and is located on the external disk or Time Capsule you have chosen in Time Machine preferences.

  • Uninstalling useless Adobe software?

I have a new iMac on the way and I want to get rid of stuff I am not using. Most software has easy-to-use uninstallers. However, I am at a standstill with Photoshop CS2 and the CS3 Demo that expired long ago. None of these have any method of that I can find to uninstall other than dragging the folders in the Application folder to the trash and look through the disk for other Adobe detritus. The docs say there is an uninstaller on the PS CS2 CD, but I can't find it.
    Anyone?
    Griff

Thanks for all the tips. I just managed to get rid of just about everything related to CS2 and CS3 Demo using a little known program called Application Annhilator which searches the drive for all items that are related to the applications and puts them in the trash for you. It is a bit scary because it doesn't let you pick and choose the things it finds for trashing - it is all or nothing, but it doesn't appear that any damage was done. I was very careful about examining all the items it put in the trash before dumping it.
I have also installed the little gem called Hazel in my System Preferences. It will continue to work quietly in the background finding useless junk to trash. I wish I had found it earlier because when you drop an application into the trash, Hazel will round up all the junk that the application has put on your drive and let you flush them away.
And John, while you were enjoying your Carling, I was sucking on a good old Bass Ale here in Canada! So, 'ears to you old chum!
    Griff
