Selecting vector layers issue

I have tons of layers in my projects. So i like to select them visually by Ctrl+click (auto-select is unchecked and mode is layer) It works fine for me with raster layers.
But if i try to select vector layers, this works in some kind of "sticky mode": when i ctrl+click outside surface of vector layer, but close enough (about 5-10px) it do selects. Why ?
Is this some kind of bug? I'dont want photoshop to act like this. More logical for me is to select vector layers same as raster (or smartobjects) when selection made only if cursor is exactly at surface of vector layer.... Any idea?
ps I have windows platform  and photoshop CS6 (ver13.0 x64)

Yes this vector shapes are quite  simple, created by rectangle tool and of course solid... That is why im confused, cos if i create rectangle vector layer, try to select it  with ctrl+click, this strage behavior takes place (i can select it beeng just close to it) if i rastrize this layer, then everything works fine - i can select it only if cursor is precisly inside shape, 1px outside and it wouldnt select...

  • Lightroom 3 Brush issue- Selects vectors instead of showing brush path

Often when working with the brush tool a very strange bug arises.
Instead of the brushstrokes being visible in a normal way, the active area around the brush becomes a large square shape, slightly brighter than its surroundings.
What this means is i can t see what im painting because a large square  blankets the area around which im working. very strange its like the brush is selecting vectors around it as im using it.
the actual painted area then become visible again when i release the mouse.
i have managed to overcome by restarting LR, but is just keeps happening after using the brush tools for a while.
Any ideas on how i might fix this?

I've noticed this behavior as well... a restart always fixes it, but of course it usually happens when I'm working late at night (which makes me think I'm losing my mind). Wondering if anyone has any answers as to why? I'm also using a Macbook Pro with the latest updates in LR (running Snow Leopard, not Lion).

  • Quick tip help. How to add to vector layers using shape tool

This is something that's bugged me for a few versions and I'm sure someone has a tip for this.
When I use Shape Layer tool, I get a solid color with a vector mask. The tool always makes a new layer every time I use the tool. So to get around that, I draw my shapes (one per layer) and then use the Path Selection Tool and cut and paste between Shape Layer layers.
How can I draw another shape on a currently selected Vector Mask? (I want to build compound Pathfinder-like shapes)

Yes, press the shift key to add to the current shape layer (vector mask).

  • How to disable selecting adjustment layers

    Hello
When you're selecting layers directly from an image (using CTRL) you also select adjustment layers, so sometimes you have to lock this layer in order to get to the right layer.
It would be a lot easier to manipulate many layers (usually in my case, most of them have the adjustment layer setting 'attached' to them) if i wouldn't select these 'adjustments' when I click on the canvas.
Is it actually possible to do?
Hope I made some sense (english ain't my native tongue ;-))
    Cheers for your reply!

Have you considered using the right mouse button (i.e., right-click) on the image to get a list of layers under the cursor, then selecting by name?
    -Noel
nah, thats whats Layers panel is for, innit?
I would like to be able to easily select layers by directly clicking on them (on canvas), which I am, but sometimes select the adjustment layer, though it only happens with the 'Exposure' one, for some reason.
its a silly little issue, but quite annoying when you wanna manipulate your composition very quickly/easily.

  • Layered vector AI file with raster (Photoshop) layers included as vector layers?

I've been using Illustrator since the late 80's but this request just now came up for the first time, twice in one day: the clients each want me to send them layered files (OK-no problem) wherein all the layers, even the raster layers, register as vector layers. Or at least all the layers, regardless of file-type (vector or raster) are contained within an unflattened Illustrator file. One of the clients specifically asked that the Type layer (No problem-all the type is on one layer) be  "vector mapped", whatever that means, while all the other layers can be Photoshop layers, if necessary.  So how do I hand them an open, unflattened Illustrator file containing both vector art and raster art?  Can someone point me to a Knowledgebase article or a previous post that addresses it? Can it be done in Acrobat, as a PDF? I'm working in AI and PS CS5, but I can and will upgrade if I have to.

I read your post in the PS forum as well.
Point is, just send them the unflattened AI or PS file with live type--type that one could double-click on the text layer in PS or use the type tool in AI to edit the text. That's the gist of it. Hopefully they have those fonts. If they do not have the fonts, you can outline the type in AI and it is still vector, just not editable as type.
And you likely have some client education needed. They need to understand the ramifications of using live type insofar as they need to own the exact same fonts you are using (you cannot legally just supply the fonts, they need to purchase the fonts) in order to prevent issues if they want to edit the type.
And yes, you can export as a PDF and keep the text live depending upon the effects used, else it could be rasterized. Something they evidently do not want.
    Good luck. Mike

  • Is there a way to select all layers at once?

I have a bunch of layers, WITHOUT holding down control and clicking each one, one by one, is there a button or shortcut to just auto highlight all the layers, Im trying to move them around evenly together on the canvase at once.
    Thanks

You can also Select all Layers by clicking on the top, or the bottom, then holding down Shift and clicking on the other (top, or bottom). That will Select the Background, but as Conroy points out, it cannot be Moved, so you might not want to use that, depending on what your next operation will be.
If you do wish to perform certain operations, including the Background Layer, you can first Dbl-click on it, and convert it to a "regular" Layer.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Can't select multiple layers with shift/ctrl in Photoshop CC

I honestly can't find a damn thing about this in google searches, other than one poor soul who had the problem on PS5 years ago and just reset their preferences to fix it.  None of my more experienced artist co-workers have any idea either..  Well I've tried resetting prefs, restarting photoshop, rebooting PC, and finally reinstalling photoshop.
I'm on a corporate CC account with my own login, I got a photoshop update that happened yesterday, in the middle of all this.  I was hoping that might fix it, but no.  I tried signing out of the CC account and signing back in, still nothing.  I"m out of ideas.
If I create a new PSD, and create multiple empty layers, I still can't multi-select the layers.  I can only ever select a single layer at a time.  What else can I possibly be missing?

Here it is, hopefully this doesn't reveal too much personal info!

  • Can't select/change layers in main work area

Been working with PSE11 for a few months.  Yesterday it developed a problem.  I can no longer click on the layer in the main work area but have to go to the layer panel to select it.  What do I need to do to change this back to where it works like it should??

    Something to check:
With the tools panel showing in the bottom of the screen, select the selection tool (arrow). Then look in the bottom tool panel to see if the automatic selection of layers is checked.

  • I want to select similar layers but my "select/similar" is not working. How do I fix it?

    I cannot do a "select/similar" in CS6 nor can I do a "Apply/Image". Can someone help me?
    Thanks

sorry about that, first time asking for help.
I shot a raw picture. Worked on it in A. Bridge. Open the pict. In cs6 (for PC)
1/ made a layer copy of the background.
2/ made an adjustment layer in b&w.
3/ made an adjustment layer / filter
4/ made an adjustment layer / contrast
At this point I a went to "select / similar". Similar was not highlighted. I right clicked on one of the layers in the layer panel. Same pb. I could not use "link layers" nor "select linked layers".
    Thanks for your help.

  • Is it possible to select multiple layers by selecting first and last layers?

I frequently get Illustrator files in that have individual objects such as paths on individual layers that could be grouped to make the layers more concise. I find that I have to shift click each individual layer to select it to eventually group it. At times, I have 25 or so layers that I need to select. Is there a way to select the first and last layer in the layers palette, and have Illustrator select all layers in between?

    Katrina,
And I guess it's the way I work. 1) I routinely select objects by selecting them from the layers palette, and not the canvas, so that I can't accidentally move an object that is the clients artwork. I prefer to work this way, as I consider it "safer". (I lock layers I'm not using) I routinely run into artists work that for instance, converted fonts to outline, and now each compound layer that is an individual letter is an object on it's own layer. 2) I need things grouped together and titled so that if I need to come back to this file and quickly fix something on press, I can tell what layer holds what object.
    3) Therefore, I frequently need to select objects in a two mile long (slight exaggeration ) list of layers/sublayers and group them, retaining them in their same layers in the event an effect has been applied at the top hiearchy of that layer.
It would be great if a key, or combination of keys, would allow me to select the top object, scroll down and select the last object, and have Illustrator select all between those two.
If you create and use selections as suggested in post #12, you do have to select individual objects when they share layers with other objects (but you can select whole layers as well) in exactly the way you are used to (1), but you only have to do it once instead of having to repeat it (3), and you have them collected with a title so you can find them again (2).
At least it is part of the way.

  • Can I view selected AI layers as a slideshow in Acrobat?

I have a multi-layered AI file I've opened in Acrobat. I can easily  toggle the visibility of each layer. What I'd like to do is select various  layers to view, then assign the various selections to bookmarks and  ultimately view the file as a slideshow, complete with transitions. I'm  guessing layers can't be controlled this way, but maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'll have to duplicate the page, which would really increase the file size. Any  suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Ray
(also posted in Acrobat Mac forum)

If I remember correctly acrobat does slideshows using pages not layers. So you would have to copy the ai file to the next page and enable which ever layers need to be visible.
To reduce file size, it may be better to have a single ai file per page with only one layer. I beleive AI has a script for export layers to files. though I may be thinking of photoshop.

  • Can't select multiple layers

This sounds very obvious, I know.
But! I have lost the ability to select multiple layers. Shift, Command, Control Click. Nothing works. I can't select them with the selection box like I used to either. There must be a setting or something that I accidentally clicked? If I can't select multiple layers I basically can't do anything including grouping or linking or merging layers in additon to a bunch of other stuff that is crutial!
    This is driving me batty.
    Thanks in advance.

To supplement this it might also be a conflict with a third party software as well.
If the keyboard tmethsd of resetting the preferences doesn't work then
    1. Quit Photoshop
2.Go to User/username/Library/Preferences/ Adobe Photoshop CS4 Settings and trash the settings folder, the whole folder not just the contents of the folder..
    3. Start Photoshop. Photoshop creates a new preferences file.
Also if you recently updated your system there might be a conflict with the systems key board shortcuts, Like Spotlight, Universal access, dashboard and Exposé or asI said before it could be something like Quicken.
    Have you installed anything lately.
