Selecting What Portion of a Clip Plays in Menu

Old iDVD had this feature - I can't find it in '08 - I drop a clip into the background and it shows the very beginning - how can I assign it to play a more relevant portion of the clip?

This is from iDVD Help:
_Setting where a background movie begins and ends_
When you use your own video as a menu’s background, you can use the entire video (up to 15 minutes), or part of it. To use part of it, you specify where you want it to begin and end in the Menu Info window.
To specify the portion of video you want to show:
Make sure the menu that uses the background video you want to adjust is showing in the iDVD window.
With your pointer over the menu (and with no buttons or text objects selected), press Command-I to open the Menu Info window.
Click the small triangle above the Loop Duration slider. (You see the triangle only when custom video is in the background well.)
The slider control becomes the Background Movie Start/End control, and the slider is split in half.
Move the left half of the slider, which plays the movie in the iDVD window, until you see the frame where you want the background video to start.
Move the right half of the slider until you see the frame where you want the background video to end.
Click the triangle again to return to the Loop Duration slider.
I hope this helps.

  • How to select unused portions of my clips

I shot a song/dance show during two different performances and have edited the best parts of both together.  Now I'm wondering if it's possible to select only the unused portions of each performance — not to delete, as others have posted about — but to actually use, for outtakes, or to create a complete video that won't be seen on the DVD I create.
    Is this possible?

When you drag clips or parts of clips from an Event to a Project, an orange coloured line is placed along the base of the clip in the Event for the parts selected. So, all the portions of clips (or full clips) that don't have the orange line will be the pieces that you've not used in the Project. So, the unused bits are easily recognizable.
You can now drag the unused portions to a new Project and then burn a separate DVD using iDVD. Or simply drag interesting segments from the Event to your original Project and use these at the end as out-takes. (NOTE: See CORRECTION below).
Note that the unused segments may be easier to identify and select if you drag the Event thumbnail slider to the far left position, so that each thumbnail represents half a second of video. The slider is positioned at the base of the Events Library on the far right. There is a similarly positioned slider for Projects.
Note also that when you trim or extend clips in the Project timeline, the orange line on the Event clip is shortened or lengthened accordingly, to match your adjusted selection. So, the unmarked segments in the Event are still a valid representation of your unused media.
    John
    CORRECTION:
I just remembered that when opening a new project, you will not see the orange lines, as they only appear when the original project is open. To overcome this, duplicate the original project (File>Duplicate Project when in Project Library view) then add the unused media to the end of that project. Now delete all the clips or part clips used in the original project. This will leave you with just the earlier "unused" media in the duplicate project. Sorry about any confusion!

  • Intro clip plays before menu starts, but has a few frames of black. I need it to be seemless, please help!?!?

    Hello,
So Im in Encore 6. I have a timeline with video and audio selected with first play, so it plays as an intro before the main menu.
The intro clip connects to the menu, however there are a few black frames during the transition to the main menu and I need this to be seamless.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You won't know until you play from a disk whether it is seamless or not. The Encore preview is not reliable.

  • What is best way of separating audio portion of video clip to use later

I would like to save, and use in other projects a portion of the audio of a clip.  What is the best way of getting the audo portion out of the clip it is in and into a some sort of self-contained clip of its own?

Just to build  on Tom's answer...
Given you only want a portion  of a specific clip...
    I'd say
Select the portion you want using the range tool (R)
Share | Master File | Audio Only (as Tom has said)
But even then, if you haven't disabled the other audio in the timeline (or don't want to) you'll get all of it... (Music/Camera/Effects etc)
What I do, is export Roles as separate files (Using the "Roles As" option) at the bottom of the share dialog. Either "Dialogue" or "Music" would probably suit you, I'm guessing.

  • How select a range or portion of a clip when importing?

Upgraded from FC Studio 5.1 to FCP10.1 when importing media (mp4 or AVCHD) from the hard drive how do I select a range or portion of a clip in the media import window if I do not want to import the entire clip into FCP.  At this point I can select the entire clip indicated by the yellow outline around it however there does not appear to be any way to click drag to resize the yellow outline to select just a portion of the clip.
    Thanks for any help.

So if I have a 500mb .mp4 clip I have to import the entire clip? No possible way to select a range?  However FC alows native folder AVCHD clip portions to be imported, very interesting.
If I connect my Canon xa20 via USB to my iMac would FC then alow me to select clip portions (AVCHD or .mp4) to import?

  • I put  video clips together and added music off of iTunes but it will not attach when I put it on youtube or vimeo. what is wrong.  It plays as I made it on iMovie

I put  video clips together and added music off of iTunes
but it will not attach when I put it on youtube or vimeo.
what is wrong.  It plays as I made it on iMovie

Thank you all for your replies. Here is what i ended up doing. I cannot afford any 3rd party software so i went to itunes and manually entered all my playlists. As I had indicated my purchased music was on my new computer just not the playlists  and I could not sync my ipod. After I rebuilt all my playlists I tried to restore my ipod to factory defaults/new. All of the steps called for in apple support and elsewhere were not available to me. I connected my ipod, went to my computer, right clicked my ipod, and formatted. That wiped my ipod so when I connected to itunes it then gave me a restore option. I did the restore and all is good in the empire again. I can now buy new music and sync my ipod so I am a happy camper.
    Thanks to all.

  • What's the fastest way to select multiple side by side clips in an event?

I want to select the bottom half of clips in an event so I can detach the audio. The only way I know how to do this is to hold down the command button as I select individual clips. There's gotta be an easier way! Is there a button (or buttons) I can hold down so that I can just drag over the clips I want to select? Alternatively, if there's a way I can just select the first clip, and then have it select every clip in between as I select the last clip, that would work too. Remember, I'm only selecting half of the clips, not all, and not all minus just a few, as I know easy ways to select all and also almost all clips.
This is sooooo ridiculously basic that I can only conclude that either I am an idiot, or Apple puts their B-list developers in charge of this application, or both.
Lastly if it's not too much to ask, can I get a woop woop!?

It's the Shift key. It's not a button. It's shifts from lower case to upper case when typing. It's been called the Shift key since the 19th century.

  • How do I have the audio of a clip play underneath a black title page?

I have a project where I am asking a couple the same question seperately. I have a black title page that writes out the interviewer's question for 2 seconds, but while the title page is displayed, I would like to hear interviewer asking the question (without seeing the footage). How do I place a black title page in front of a clip so only the audio plays while the title page is running?
    THANK YOU!

The simplest way would be to
    0) In iMovie/Preferences make sure that the Advanced Tools are enabled.
    1) Add your tite to the movie.
    2) Find the event clip that contains the audio and select the portion that you need. Drag it to the project and drop it on the Title. A pop-up menu should appear. Choose "Audio Only".
There are other ways as well if this does not work for you.

  • Ok really now...has anyone figured out a new way to select a portion of a project and output just that part?? Or is it still a 20 step process??

Ok really now...has anyone figured out a new way to select a portion of a project and output just that part?? Or is it still a 20 step process?? What is the best/fastest way to give my client a teaser clip??

Still a 20 step process, many ways to approch it. Duplicate project and selectively delete everything around it. Or select and copy what you need. I think it could be a year before apple makes that step a 2 or 3 step process.

  • IMovie 10 - how to delete rejected portions of a clip

I have read all the discussions and connot figure this out.  I can view rejected clips, but have no way to delete them or put them in Trash.  If I select Move to Trash it trashes the whole clip.  Thanks for any help.

    Hi
I wanted to delete the "rejected" portions of a clip. I made iMovie show only teh rejected clips and deleted them all. I realized now that iMovie deleted the whole clip that included portions that were marked as favorites, unmarked, not just the rejected. Luckily I do have the original files elsewhere but I threw away a couple of hours of work.
If i have a long clip and I want to get rid of "bad" / "useless" sections of what is marked rejected there should be an easy way in iMovie. Is tehre?
if I split a clip does the original file gets split or not? Is tehre a quick way to do that without a too much cumbersome workaround?
    thanks

  • How do I select an area on a clip in a timeline and copy and paste it ..

How do I select an area of a clip in the timeline and copy and paste the video track only, several times on the tracks just above it?
    Thank You in Advance,
    Sebastian

Select the range selection tool (ggg is the keyboard shortcut), then drag through the clip to select the area you want to copy then paste... it will paste only what's selected.

  • How to make a clip play backwards in timeline and how to reverse a clip from left to right?

I would love to know if it is possible to:
    1. make a clip play backwards in the timeline
    2. reverse the orientation of a clip from left to right
    Thanks in advance.

Yes to both.  The specific method may vary from one version to another.
    1. make a clip play backwards in the timeline
Right click > Speed/ Duration > Reverse Speed
    2. reverse the orientation of a clip from left to right
Apply the Basic 3D video effect.  Adjust the Swivel to 180 degrees.
    What version are you using?

  • Clip play when reach area on page

    Hi everyone!
Im trying to play a clip that I have made in edge animate on my website, I havent published it yet so i dont have a example but does anyone know how to play a clip when you reach an area of a page?
    Thansk

I'm not sure what you mean by clip box.
If you're in timeline view, are you saying that the clip disappears from your timeline?
If so, press the \ key. This will show you your entire video project on the timeline. Be sure to scroll up and down to make sure your clip is not, for some reason, on an upper or lower video track.

  • What output formats support the play speed settings on a PC using windows media player?

What output formats support the play speed settings on a PC using windows media player?
Here is my need. I need to take my video clips with me on my small PC and view them at slow speed. My playback PC is small and a little slow, so I cant have a very high bitrate. It uses an ATOM processor. It uses windows media player. I noticed the slow playback option is available in some formats when opened with windows media player, other formats--feature not available. What are the best output settings to save my clips on my small PC?

Just to add a few details:
    As stated, WMP 11.0.5xxx
    OS = XP-Pro SP3
    Intel Core2 Quad 2.66GHz
    RAM = 4GB
Graphics chip = nVidia GeForce 8800M (recent, but not latest nVidia driver)
    I/O = 3x SATA II 7200 RPM 250GB
    Virtual Memory = Static 10GB on D:\
WMV's play pretty well in both Slo-Mo and at about 2-3x speed

  • How do I keep only the cropped portion of a clip and trash the rest?

Before getting my new Macbook, I was using iMovie3. When I would crop a file, only the highlighted portion was kept and the rest of the clip was sent to the trash. With iMovie HD, it is my understanding when you crop a clip, the information outside the cropped area is stored somewhere - how do I send this unneeded portion of the clip to the trash? I have used up almost all the memory in my new computer and don't know how to free up space without deleting the entire clip.

    Hi m
You can't: As standard. iMovie is a "*non destructive editor*" - means it stores
the Capture/Imported material in one place and Your cutting, editing etc. is just
a text document refering onto how this material is to be viewed.
Even if You only usesed one frame from an hour long import - all of it will be
saved for futhure changes. (1 hour = about 13Gb of space)
You can: Send movie back to Camera and a new miniDV tape. Then start a new
project from this - and delete Your old project.
This will free up space - but You lose the ability to adjust the prior editings,
    texts and so on.
Alt is to save as full quality QT.mov and start a new project from this. Still
what's done is done - but You jump the Camera step. (I have the feeling of that
I get a quality loss this way - but several in this forum disagrees)
    Advice:
    1. Try to Capture/Import about what You need and not just dump in several hours of
material for a few minutes movie.
    2. I use a hugh external FireWire hard disk (Mac OS Extended formatted) to store
my movie projects and a minimum of 25Gb free space on my internal (start-up) one.
