Selection gradient HELP- Photoshop 7

I admit it I'm a total photoshop neophyte. Self teaching through trial and error.
HUGE PROBLEM.....I'm trying to take a selection from an image or the images edge and create a gradation of transparency, so I can merge the edges of two different images. The gradient tool seems only to OVERLAY a gradient of color. Is there an option to have a gradation of transparency from one point to another?

Instead of setting your gradient to white to black. Set it to go from white to grey (40%?). That way it will be semi transparent in the grey areas.
Or set a big brush to 50% grey and soften it by 50% and you can paint on the layer mask to your exact specifications.
Also check this out! Very cool.....use the "blend mode" on the upper layer.
You have many options of how you can set the top layer to be transparent.
Overlay, Lighten, Darken. etc.
Also if you double click on the layer panel (the white box itself in the layers palette), a dialog box appears.
These settings have better controls here. You can set the ""Blend Mode" and adjust it's transparency.
Look near the bottom in the middle if this panel...where it says "Blend if"
If you look at the sliders that adjust the highlight and shadow transparency settings you will see that they are little triangles.
Option/alt click on the triangle and it will split in two (drag one side away from the other). This will let you "feather" your transparency.
(Also "Blend if" can be set to grey or red or green or blue). Also it allows you to control the transparency of the layer above (or below)
Be sure to fiddle with the thing. I swear you will be amazed at what the "Layer Styles" panel can do.

Lightroom won't ask how to edit a file when I select "edit in Photoshop CS6"

Yesterday Lightroom suddenly stopped asking how I want the file edited when I select "edit in Photoshop". I opens the file directly in Photoshop without asking do I want to "edit with Lightroom changes", "edit a copy", or "edit original".
I've tried finding a setting to turn this on or off and found nothing. I've tried shutting down. I've even tried removing and reloading both Photoshop and Lightroom. As far as I can tell it has defaulted to always opening with LR edits.
I'm using Lightroom 5.3 and Photoshop CS6 extended version 13.0. I ran updates on both after reloading yesterday. I'm using the Mac versions of the software.
Please help!

Is it possible that you've switched to using Raw (or DNG) files? There is a different process when using a Raw file versus using a rendered file such as Jpeg, Tiff, PSD....and it's only the latter file-types which will prompt the "Edit a copy, Edit original, etc" question. If the ACR levels are compatible (which they will be if your ACR plug-in for PS CS6 is up-to-date) then there will be NO question when using "Edit In...." on a Raw/DNG file, the file is rendered automatically in the background by Photoshop's ACR plug-in, when you then "Save" in PS the now-rendered file (Tiff or PSD, depending on your external editing preference setting) will appear back in Lightroom.

Problem combining selection tools in Photoshop CC 2014

When I make a selection using the Quick Selection Tool in Photoshop CC and then switch to the Lasso Tool to refine the selection, it just adds to what I already had selected. If I do the same thing in CC 2014, as soon as I click on the photo with the Lasso Tool the original selection disappears.

Look at your selection options in the tool options bar for the lasso tool.
Sounds like cc is set to Add and cc2014 is set to New
You could just keep the option on new and use the shift key to add to the selection.

How to recreate Illustrator Gradients in Photoshop?

hello --
i frequently find myself recreating gradients created in illustrator using photoshop. however, even when using the exact settings for color, opacity, and location, they never come out the same. is there some rule of thumb or some logic as to how those two applications create gradients and how to better approximate them?
any help is much welcome.

Photoshop and Illustrator gradient controls are quite different, apart from both having colour stops. In Photoshop, the top controls are for opacity independent of colour. The apps use different maths for calculating a gradient, but I found a way to produce your gradient in Photoshop. It's quite impractical but it's better than nothing.
Create an opaque to transparent gradient with Smoothness = 0.
Do not move the opacity midpoint control from its default halfway position.
If you made a Gradient Fill layer or gradient-filled Shape then rasterize it (or a duplicate).
Do Layer > Layer Mask > From Transparency.
With mask targeted, do Image > Adjustments > Levels and make a gamma adjustment with the middle control under the graph.
The screenshot shows Illustrator gradient in the left half, and the mask on the Photoshop gradient in the right half being adjusted to give a match.

Sudden loss of print selected area in Photoshop 10.0.1?

Between printing one image and printing the next I seem to have lost the ability to print a selected area in Photoshop 10.0.1. I am using this old program because the new Photoshop does not have that option. The box is now greyed out. Does any know why I could lose this, and what can I do to get it back? This is extremely important to my work method...

When a tool misbehaves, go over to the far upper right corner of the tool options area and click the four-lined square. Choose Reset Tool from the popout menu.

Hi - thanks for your comments. It was happening on all of the selection tools however I have solved the problem by changing the 'Advanced Graphics Processor Setting' to 'Basic' in Photoshop CC.

Prerequisites for multi selection value help

Hi everyone,
a couple of blogs and forum entries show multi selection value helps in VC. I, on the other hand, have so far been unable to do this. The only option I get in the first step of the value help wizard is the "single selection" type. Even if I start off with a blank form view and add a text input field I cannot choose anything apart from a single selection value help. Is there something I am completely missing? I stumbled upon a note bringing this into connection with OLAP source systems, but I can't quite see why this should change anything since the source system is not selected until step 2 of the wizard.
Any idea on this? Thanks a lot,

thanks for the hints, I got it working now, regardless of whether you use an OLAP source system, variables or the respective input port, though. It seems to suffice to connect the query directly to a form view to get the additional options. My problem was then that I had a form view connected to a nested iview. I should be able to connect it to both a query and the iview, though.

My Content/text/code is being deleted when selected in Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Illustrator

FOr the past week when I select text in photoshop and illustrator, or code in dreamweaver, it is deleted. I've updated all apps and uninstalled and reinstalled dreamweaver but nothing seems to work. Is this an app issue or a mac issue? Its only happening with adobe products.
