Selection tool not lighting up path or points?

I am using CS3 on an Intel Mac running 10.5.8.
I am working on a large file and for whatever reason that I don't understand, when I select a path, the path no longer 'lights up' so I can see it and it's anchor points. In the menu bar above, it will note that  a compound path or point is selected, but without being able to pinpoint the exact anchor point etc., I cannot make changes and anything new I create in the file will not 'light up' either when I use the selection tool. The only thing that shows up is the major outline boundary of the entire object.
Is there some sort of switch that I've activated accidentally that I don't know about?
Thanks for your help.

View > Show Edges.
You probably inadvertently hit the shortcut (command/ctrl-h)

    Larry,
I Just tried the solution you gave. It did not work. I still have 1 point vectors in a very small image. The image is a simple drawing of a map. I just want to size it to fit a smaller page size.

  • Direct Selection Tool will not choose individual "path" anchor points

    Photohsop CS4, 11.0.1
Mac OSX 10.4.11, MacPro, Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 2.66 GHz, 9GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT-256 MB VRAM, 500GB Startup HD, 500GB HD (wlhere file resides and scratch disk), OpenGL enabled
I am unable to select individual anchor points and line segments of a path, although the anchor points appear to be individually highlighted, copying them copies the entire path, not just the selected points, and deleting them deletes the entire path, not just the selected points. In effect the "hollow arrow" direct selection tool is working like the "solid arrow path selection" tool.
I ran Disk Warrior, repaired disk permissions. I deleted old preferences by renaming file with Photoshop closed, and then restarted photoshop.
After calling Adobe Tech Support, they are recommending I reinstall the entire CS4 suite, which I am hesitant to do. At the least I will lose all of my menu preferences in all programs. Should I just follow their advice and reinstall CS4?
    Thanks.

When you click on it with path selection tool (black arrow) which option is enabled in options bar at top - add, subtract, intersect, or exclude?
    Can you combine paths?
Have you tried drawing a new path and selecting points on it?
Can you still add and subtract points?
Edit: Can you pull on the bezier handles?
Edit: is it a vector mask or a standalone path?
I'm trying to simulate your problem – in the meantime I'm brainstorming, not sure how else to help. It seems like something restarting the program would fix.
What about quitting the app. Then going to User: Library: Prefs: Adobe Photoshop CS4 paths, trash it then restart?

  • HELP!!!! Path selection tool not working.

Earlier today my path selection tool was working fine. I was able to add vectors and move them around. Now all it is doing is moving the
whole shape instead of the selected vector. I tried restarting the program, opening different projects and I even tried rebooting the PC all together. Still works the same. I dont know what happened or how to fix it. I really wanted to push out a project before 5pm CST I would be ever so grateful if someone knew how to fix this.

Hi, LarissaPryor. I'm afraid you've made a wrong turn somewhere, since Photoshop Elements has no Path Selection tool, so you must have full Photoshop. Better to ask in the appropriate Photoshop forum. For windows:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop/photoshop_windows
    for mac:

    Good luck!

  • Selection tool not working and cannot select layers

Just loaded up cs5 w/ indesign and tried to start using indesign. To my dismay the selection tool and the layers will not high light when pointed to or work when clicked upon. these are the only tool i've found not to be working so far.

Are you using Windows 7, if so, see InDesign tools and panels don't respond to mouse clicks (Windows 7/Vista)
If not, what is the OS, and what language is the installation of ID?

  • Illustrator CS - Selection Tool not working correctly

    Hi all...
A customer of ours has an odd Illustrator CS problem. When she tries to use the Selection Tool to select any item, it auto-selects everything. Even if she uses the selection box by dragging the cursor over anything, it selects all the different items in the image.
Has anyone seen this or fixed it before?
    Many thanks!

    How about this?...
With the selection tool/black arrow tool, you can select the object, change the color or opacity and move it...but can't un-group it.
With the direct select tool/white arrow tool, when you try to select an individual shape to make slight changes to the path...the anchor points will show up as you mouse over them, but nothing shows when you click on the path.
When drawing a new shape with the pen tool, the anchor points don't show as you draw the shape. No handles appear...but the shape shows up. It's like feeling your way around a dark room on instinct.
...and it's only doing this in one particular file. When another file is opened all the quirks listed above do not happen. Each tool works as it should.

  • Selection Tool not allowing me to move shapes

    I need your help.
The Selection Tool is not allowing me to move shapes.  It allows me to Resize them by the achor points, but won't let me move them.
    Any suggestions?
I use Adobe Illustrator CS5 for Mac OSX.
    Thanks!

Try nudging with the up/down arrow keys. Does that work? Does a Move command (Cmd+Shift+M) work?
If so, could it be that Object Selection by Path Only is checked in Selection & Anchor Display prefs? If so, uncheck it.

  • Perspective Selection Tool not working

I can't figure out why the selection tool won't work.  When active, I can't grab an object to move it and the icon next to the selection arrow is a line with an arrow pointing to the left, like this
    <–|
    Any suggestions?

That is normal and the correct icon, showing you are on the left plane. Is your item locked or on a locked layer, or in a mask? Watch the appearance paeltte to tell you what type of selection you have.
Try drawing a new rectangle as a test to see what is working and what is not.
With the Perspective Selection tool, the active planes in the perspective grid are indicated by the following pointers.
    Left Grid Plane
    Right Grid Plane
    Horizontal Grid Plane
The keyboard shortcuts 1, 2, 3 switch you between planes

  • The selection tool not working

The selection tool in Illustrator is not functioning as normal. It won't allow me to automatically click on a path or group of objects and show the rectangular marquee that automatically gives me a corner to grab and scale the selected items. How can I get this function to work again?

Sounds like you are missing the bounding box. Got to View>Show Bounding Box.

  • Selection tools not working properly -- Illustrator CS6

The two selection tools in CS6 Illustrotor not working properly.  They don't select the object when I click and drag a box around them and the handles on drawing path won't stay highlighted when I use the direct selection tool so I can adjust them -- Worked in Illustrator for about 12 years and never had this problem.

    Have you tried:
    View > Show edges

  • Selection tool not letting me resize any more

The selection tool is not work like it use too... I can not resize any thing any more! not more points in corner to resize or distort... I'm sure it is a check box somewhere this I must have hit

... which is a good reason for changing the keyboard shortcut for bounding boxes.
Cmd+Shift+B is far too easy to do by mistake. Use something more obscure or even delete the shortcut.

  • Selection tool not allowing resize

I did a quick search and couldn't find anything on this (although I've got eye problems tonight and may have missed it). At any rate, here is my problem...
I rely a lot on the main selection tool (the dark pointer) to select and resize my objects, but lately in Illustrator CS4 (just today, actually) the selection rectangle/border is no longer appearing when an item is selected. I double and triple checked the View/Hide Edges (Command-H) and it's definitely not that.
I tried trashing the preferences but that didn't seem to work. Is there something else I should try?
    I'm running CS4 on a Dual 2.0 G5 PowerMac in Leopard (10.5.6).
This is really irritating, so thanks for any help.

And then of course there's the Scale tool and you don't need bounding boxes to use that. Personally I have always disliked bounding boxes because of the visual clutter they cause, especially when working with type. It can sometimes be difficult to see whether you're dealing with point or area type if you've got bounding boxes running. But that's just a matter of taste and I'm sure a lot of ex-Freehanders will disagree with me. Can't be bothered to enter that minefield just now :-)

  • Text select tool not working properly

When I use the text select tool, it selects columns, not words in a row, which is what I want. It used to work correctly. I am using Acrobat Pro, version 9.0.0.
I tried adding the ALT key, with no good result.

Is it with this specific document o any pdf you work on?
If it was earlier working fine for you, try repairing Acrobat  by going to 'Help' menu > Repair Acrobat.
Also make sure you have updated it to the latest patch.
    Regards,
    Ravi.

  • Quick selection tool not working correctly

I am trying to extract a portion of a photo...i tried using the selection tool to extract the portion on another picture, and it worked GREAT!
Now i'm trying to use it in another photo and the refine image tool isn't extracting it into a new layer like it did with the other one!
is there something that i may have clicked or turned off that is preventing me from making this extraction??

    Hello,
Could you be more specifc as to what you are doing here?
You mention using selections tools, including the Quick Selection tool, but these tools only create selections, they do not extract the material you have selected. A selection is like highlighting text in a word processor, after you have highlighted the text you can copy/paste it or modify it, but simply highlighting it doesn't do anything. Same with selections, once you have created a selection with a tool like Quick Selection you can how copy/paste it to a new image or perform adjustments to just that area.
I'm not sure what you mean by the "refine image tool", we don't have anything by that name. However, we do have a Refine Edge option that helps to make cleaner edges to your selection.
