Selection tools are being weird

New to illustrator (CS 6), I downloaded a template file from The Game Crafter and set to work.  This file is clearly in some weird mode and selection tools don't work like the tutorials say.
- I can select one object (path, imported bitmap graphic, text block) but it beeps and won't add another object if I shift-click it.  Selection, Direct selection, or Group selecton tool!
- I can select an object and move it by arrow keys, but it beeps if I try to drag it around
- In general, there's an awful lot of beeping, almost anything I do in selection tools.
I'm trapped in a mode!  Where's the key to get out to "normal" editing?
And in general, what does it mean if I'm trying to shift-select (and I'm not completely outside of all objects) and it beeps?

As you probably know, the beeps mean it doesn't like something! I don't think there is a specific thing it only beeps for. What I have found it could be beeping for is the following:
What you are trying to move is locked. If a layer is locked that means that it can't be edited or moved (but it can be selected). Check the layers tab on the right of the screen and see if anything is locked (it will have a padlock symbol next to it.
When trying to move something to big it would be off the drawing areaThere is a drawing area larger than your artboard that everything must fit inside. Sometimes moving large objects will not work because they would be outside the draweing area in thier new positon.
You are using the wrong tool to moveOnce you have the object selected, use the Selection Tool (v) to move the object (The dark Arrow Tool).
If none of these doo the trick, maybe send a screen shot of the objects selected and I can see if I notice anything wrong.

  • What tools are being used with WLS 5.1?

I have been experimenting with WLS 5.1 and it is clear that there are many
steps in developing, testing, and deploying EJBs. What tools are being
used? How do IBM's Visual Age, JBuilder 4, and Visual Cafe EE stack up?
Are there any tools for developing and debugging JSPs?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi folks,
about the "IBM VisualAge 3.02 (Integration Kit)" that Nirav mentions below...
Does this integration kit work with Visual Age 3.5? If not, do you have any tool recommendations for VA3.5 users who are developing apps for WebLogic5.1?
    Thanks,
    Janet

    Mike,
The level of integration between WLS and the tools is as follows (with
VisualCafe being the most integrated) --
    1. VisualCafe Enterprise (or the WebGain Studio suite)
    http://www.webgain.com/Products/index.htm
    2. JBuilder 4 http://www.inprise.com/jbuilder/
    3. IBM VisualAge 3.02 (Integration Kit beta up on BEA website)
    http://commerce.beasys.com/downloads/weblogic_server.jsp#wlstools
All the integration's support development, local debugging, and local
deployment, but VisualCafe has wizards and like which generate code for the
    J2EE specs that WLS supports.
I have read that JBuilder 4 supports JSP debugging but have not tried it yet.

Which develop tools are being used most widely?
Who are using JCreator, could you tell me if it is good.

there's another thread that should answer this for you. Actually, several other threads. Even one earlier today, that I just responded to.

  • Selection tools are invisible

all my selection tools like lasso tools , marquee tools they do work but only their action appear when i am finished
like when i draw a rectangular marquee i click and drag and release the shape i choose to draw doesn't appear until i release the mouse button
which is very annoying in lasso tools coz i dont know what i am doing

Sounds like you have a video driver issue...
If you're using CS4 or CS5, try temporarily disabling the OpenGL Drawing setting in Edit - Preferences - Performance.  Remember to close and restart Photoshop before testing the setting change.
Download and install the driver for your video card from the web site of the maker of your particular card:

  • Highlight Object Under Selection Tool not working?

    Hello,
After the latest update 10.1.0.70, obejcts under the selection tool are not highlighted. Has anybody else encountered such issue? I reset InDesign to its defaults, but that didn't help. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    View > Show Edges?
    Or Object > Unlock All
You've provided no information. Therefore I'm just guessing.

  • Tools are not answering normally

    Hello,
Some of the tools are acting strangly: the rubber and the selecting tools are drawing black lines on the image.
Please help me to find what's wrong!
    Thank you very much!

Thank you for answering me but I think I found what was wrong:the computer is very old so it's affecting Photoshop and how quicly the tools are acting.
    Thank you very much anyway!!

  • Selection tools - how to get detail?

I currently have PSE 10, and use the selection tools often (normally the Quick selection).  I find them quite frustrating if trying to include detail along edges, for example of a bird with lots of fine feathers extending beyond the body of the bird.  I am familiar with the + and - options to add/subtract from the selection, but was wondering if there is a good (easier) way to include all that detail.  I usually go to actual pixel size or higher when trying to include the detail.
Also, I have heard that the selection tools are better in versions 11 and 12.  Would they help in what I want to do?  I'm probably going to upgrade anyway, but may wait for version 13 since that is probably not far away.
    Thanks.

You can try the lasso tool, but it can be very difficult to select precisely around feathers, leaves, and fur.
Have you tried selecting with a mask? Here you can use a black brush to hide outside the feathers (in your hypothetical), and then reveal with a white brush if you go too far. The trick is to use the bracket keys (next to the letter P on the keyboard) to change the size of the brush cursor as you navigate around.

  • Select tool highlights area above/below selected area.

I have received a 2 page pdf that I am copying and pasting data from.
On most of the pdf the select tool works as expected. drag tool over desired text, ctrl + C to copy then open word and Ctrl V to paste. However there is a section where selecting a line of text actually highlights the blank line above or below depending on the what side of the horizontal middle line of the text you are. Doing the rest of the operation Copy and then paste results in the selected text being pasted even though the area that was highlighted was a blank area.
I am using Adobe Reader 8.1.2 and would appreciate any suggestions. Is there perhaps certain attributes on the pdf which are corrupted or prevent copying? if this was possible how could I check for it?
    Thanks in advance

If any tool is actually acting screwy, you can try selecting the tool's drop-down menu in the top left side of the options bar running along the top and click on the small cog wheel and select "reset tool." If there was something screwy that corrupted the tools preferences, this may fix it.
Aside from that, the better way to use the quick select tool is, rather than retrying a selection with different settings, hold the alt-key to temporarily switch to a quick-deselect and swipe across the sky (or anything) you don't want. With a few quick swipes of regular selecting and alt-deselecting you can quickly get the parts you want. It even works remarkably well at edges with very little difference between them as Photoshop seems to "learn" which edges you're trying to capture.
Of course, don't forget the "refine edge" command to get exactly the sort of edges you want from your selection.

  • Quick selection tool doesn't snap to to the nearest area. Working more like a lasso tool and the add layer button doesn't seem to creat the cutout that it should.

Quick selection tool in elements 13 doesn't snap to the nearest border area of the photo. Works more like a lasso. Also the add layer button when clicked on only brings up a black layer, not a black mask with a hole where I just cut.

Which OS are you working on?
Please try resetting your tools from Photo Bin flyout menu.
    1. Open Photo bin.
    2. Click on Fly Out menu
    3. Click on option Reset all Tools
    4. Relaunch Editor13
    and see if it helps.
    Thanks,

  • Within Music Library can anyone please explain why when I select the option to sort 'Album by Artist' a number of tracks are being treated as separate albums?  How can I correct this?  I have tried to 'drag and drop' but that doesn't work.

Within music Library can anyone please explain why after I select the option to sort 'Album by Artist' a number of tracks are being treated as separate albums?  How can I fix this?  I have tried to manually correct by 'drag and drop' individual tracks but that doesn't work.  My music library includes a number of repeat album artwork images simply because not all tracks are being listed under the one album making my library more difficult to use than it should.  Any advise would be appreciated.

You can use the Alt/Option key to toggle between add + and subtract -

First though select the Add to Selection in the tool options bar for that to work.

  • How to unselect magic wand tool to select another area?

This is so silly but it is driving me nuts.  I used to be able to select an area with the Magic Wand tool and then when I was done, click on something else and it would "deselect."  But now it doesn't do that anymore.  Did I change a setting somehow by accident or did they do an update that changed that?  I hate having to do Ctrl D to deselect it when I used to just click on something else.

Thanks for your help.  I actually checked on the icons where you mentioned and the one I wanted was the "new selection box"  I had "add to selection" checked and so it wouldn't unselect when I went to new area.  So your answers helped!  Thanks so much.

  • Why does the select tool stop working and images save with areas missing?

I have been working on an image using simple tools (only select, crop and scale) and no more than 4 layers.
The quick selection tool, magic wand tool and polygonal lasso tools are not selecting simple areas. They leave square sections unselected, and eventually I can't select anything on my canvas. The paint tool also does not work. I decided to save the image I had made even though it was unfinished, and upon reopening the file (a PSD) there were square transparent areas that were not there when I saved it (see image)
    This is what I've tried:
I work on the layer selected
I have reset all the tool settings back to the default ones
I have reset the program preferences back to default settings
The Photoshop CC software is up to date
I have turned the program and my computer on and off again
    Can someone please help?

Is the damage actual or only display (are the layers complete according to their previews in the Layers Panel)?
Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
What have you done for trouble-shooting so far? (Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved mis usually a good starting point):

  • My selection & direct tools are not working properly. What could be the problem?

I can't select my selection & direct selection tools from my tool bar. The shortcuts are working but even when an object is selected I can't edit the color of the object. When the mouse hoover the selection tool icon it does not highlight like the rest of the tools. The mouse is working fine in other Adobe applications and I never have a problem before. T his just happened suddenly. I read one post where the person had a problem similar to mine and I applied the suggestion that was given of changing the Theme for Windows 7 but I still have the same problem. I'm working in CS5 and my OS is Window 7. I will appreciate any help. Thanks

For the sake of clarity and to save people time, Todd is asking about the behaviour of the Patch tool when using it to repair the area next to the young lad's head.  Todd gets a blurred dark tone pretty much regardless of the options he uses.
IMO that's what I would expect to happen because of the close proximity of the other image elements i.e. the lad's neck and the strong lines of his shirt.  I would not choose to use the Patch tool in this situation.  Content Aware Fill makes a better stab at it.
