Selective file transfer

Hi,
I'd like to transfer my own files, photos, music and a few applications from the family's iMac onto my new MacBook.
If I transfer via Target Disk, do I have the option of grabbing only what I want, or does it bring everything from the iMac into the MB?
Or is there a better way to go about this?
Thanks,
John
iMac G5 20'' 2GHz rev B   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   MacBook

If you boot the machine with the files into Target Disk Mode, and then just browse it from your other system, you can pick and choose what you want to copy.
It will mount on the desktop just like any other external hard drive would.
Just browse to what you want, and copy it where you want it on your system.
If you do it that way, you can get exactly what you want, and nothing more.
If you use Migration Assistant, then you can select what types of things you want, but you have much less control over what's going on.
Plus, it's best not to use Migration Assistant to go from a PPC to an Intel system. Some settings and drivers get copied that can cause trouble on an Intel system.
The one advantage of Migration Assistant is that it will copy files to their proper location automatically, and configure your settings.
But, Migration Assistant has been the cause of many new Intel owner's problems. Not the utility itself, but rather when the utility installs a PPC driver or PPC specific setting onto an Intel system.
Hope this helps.

  • Backed Up Music/Missing Music/Ipod File Transfer

    Hi there!
I recently rebooted my computer (Windows XP) back to factory settings, which obliterated my iTunes. I had backed up my files (or so I thought) by saving my "iTunes" folder from the "My Music" folder onto an external hard drive--as suggested by the New York Times tech section. When I rebooted, reinstalled my iTunes start up disk from 2005, and transferred my music back into the correct folder, very few songs seemed to have survived the transfer--including none of my purchases and none of my playlists.
When I then updated iTunes to the current version, all my playlists and my entire library came back, but often in name only. Many, many songs--including many purchases--now have little exclamation points next to them that indicate that iTunes cannot find the original file, yet they are listed, thus taunting me that iTunes knows I own them, but refuses to cooperate. This is true both when the external drive is plugged in and when it's not. In addition, the blocks of songs that made it versus those that didn't seems very random--it's a mix of downloads from early on, recent trips to the iTunes store, and in between.
I know that it is my responsibility to back up my music, but I thought I had taken appropriate precautions. I have read in a few other postings about the option to select File-->Transfer Purchases from Ipod (all of my purchased music is alive and well on the ipod), but nothing really seems to happen when I do this. How do I know if it's working? Is there a trick to using this tool? Having tried it, I have seen no removal of the exclamation points, and I'm worried to do it wrong in case iTunes erases my ipod as well.
Any pointers or assistance would be very greatly appreciated!

hmmm... ok, so iTunes has updated itself to version 8.2 something since i first reinstalled the 2005 version, so i think it's entirely current. i am happy to remove this version of itunes and start over without reinstalling the 2005 version, if you think that will help. i'm just not sure exactly how to go about doing that. i'm also not sure how to get around this full disk warning, as it also happens when i add the library to the desktop rather than try to work from the external HD (which, it seems to me, should give it the full use of my internal hard drive to operate, which is far from full).
so, let's say that uninstalling and restarting iTunes won't save me or my music. how do i then go about returning the music to itunes from my ipod? i'm so sorry for the peppering of questions, i really am a technologically lost cause...
    to clarify:
    1. should i uninstall my iTunes and start over?
    2. if yes, how do i do this without the 2005 start up disk?
    3. if i do this and my music doesn't seem to automatically recover, should i then try the shift option?
    4. how do i get around the "full disk" warning message if it continues to happen?
    5. if everything else recovery-based fails, how do i transfer my purchased files from my ipod to my itunes if nothing seems to happen when i try file-->transfer from ipod?
thank you both so, so much!

  • Creative Zen USB and File transfer probl

Am the unhappy owner of a brand new Creative Zen touch 20gb mp3 player which apparently works with usb 2.0. After installing the software which came on the cd (file transfer software and nomad explorer) the Zen appears to get recognised by the pc with no problems when i connect via the usb cable. The Zen also displays 'docked' which is all very well. However if i select say 0 tracks to download to the player the xp progress bar seems to halt at around 60-70% and eventually the program (nomad) complains that the operation cannot be completed. I noticed that the small hard dri've in the player feels as though it is 'spinning down' around a similar time to the message being displayed. If at this stage i refresh the players view in nomad explorer it can be found with no problem....its just i cant write to it until i unplug the usb from the zen and reconnect. I spoke to creative who told me that because my pc (in system devices) reports that my usb is an 'open host' adapter...this means it cannot supply adequate power to the player....but surely USB2.0 is USB2.0 and if something claims to be USB2.0 compliant that would be the end of the story? The usb card im using is a usb 2.0 pci card and is also pretty new. Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I have tried various usb ports, usb and2 conections ( I have both), various cables and combinations and the same happens. I have also tried win xp and win98, and other disks I have with the same result. I have managed to transfer 20 os so mp3s (a small proportion of those I have been trying to transfer)after 3-4 hours hard labour but never the contents of a full folder. After a proportion of the files are transferred then Zen touch becomes 'busy' or 'not connected'. Obviously there is no way I can continue like this and it will have to go back.
I have tried the slightly newer driver but this did not work at all and I had to roll back to the one that came on the CD. I feel that I have given it a fair shot trying all the workarounds.
Is is a USB power problem? Should a powered usb hub cure it's If so why?
But is this surely is Creative's problem. It is obviously a known issue but what are they doing about it's Putting out Zens which are prone to this problem is not good practice. Any solutions out there?

    Hey,
If you tried it on a friend's computer and you're still having problems then it may be a problem with the Zen. Before you call or e-mail tech support, here is what they will tell you do to first before they really get in depth with helping you. Go into Rescue Mode (there is an explanation on how to do this at the top of the forum) and do a disk clean up. After that, try it. If that doesn't work then click the reload OS option which will take the firmware (like windows to your PC) off the Zen. Don't worry you can easily put it back on. Go to Support>Downloads>select Zen Touch, etc, etc. and download the latest firmware and run it. Hopefully that will fix it....
I had some connection problems myself with my ZT as soon as I got it as well. and simply reflashing the firmware fixed and now I love my Zen. I hope everything works out for you.

  • How to increase the speed of network file transfer

    hi ,
In my application i want to use the file from one system to another system.
i am using stream reader to get the file over the network , its working fine for small file,
but i want to access file size exceed 10 MB then i faced the problem. Its get very slow the file transfer over the network.
so i am try to use java NIO for transfer file,
Using NIO , While i am make server and client both are same system then the file tranfer is 10MB file in 10 seconds , but i am making server and client are different machine then its take so long to transfer file ie (10 MB file in 3 minutes).
I want to reduce the time . If any chance to reduced the file transfer time then please suggest me.

// Ensure all the bytes have been read in
        if (offset < bytes.length)
          throw new IOException("Could not completely read file " + file.getName());
        is.close();
        return bytes;
      public static String printTimeWithMilliSec(long l )
        Date date = new Date( l ) ;
        SimpleDateFormat f = new SimpleDateFormat("HH:mm:ss SSS");
        return f.format(date);
    }

Data transfer rate for a single client is unlikely to be effected by using NIO or old blocking IO. The important factor is the maximum transfer rate you can get between the sender and receiver.
You should be able to get 0.5-1.0 MB per second for each 10 Mbit per second of available bandwidth. Your timings suggest you are getting about a 10-20 Mbit/s link speed.

  • WebUtil file transfer in multiple user implementation

    Hi
Installed WebUtil and able to integrate forms/reports in Web enviroenment 10gAs.
Around 30 to 40 people will use this application, Now to do client side integration (To Save generated output to Cleint m/c) we are geerating file on AppServer and transferring using Webutil file transfer but my question if multiple users running same report from form and generates two different date ranges to generate to same file on Appserver, How Can I use WebUtil file tranfer for two people running same report. Is that going to be problem in concurrent user environment.
Setup 10gAs, User A select report A and run with two different data ranges and file saved on Appserver as test.pdf and now user b want to run same report with time range little bit different time range and file has to be saved to same test.pdf on ApopServer, Now how oracle going to handle this ???????.
Pl answer this is very important as we are running this reports in Web implementation with more than 30 users.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Murthy

Surely the real issue is that you are always generating to the same filename? Incorporate an identifier into the filename. e.g. the username

    Hi ,
Can anyone please tell the steps for file transfer with FTPS.
Does PI file adapter has bulilt in feauture to handle this? or
Do we need to deploy anything to handle this?
Do we need to install any certificates by requesting from partner or It will do the encryptions/authentications on its own?
Any additional Steps we need to mention in File receiver adapter while we send the file through FTPS?
File is going through port 1090(unsecure connection) but it is not going through port (990) which is a secure connection.
    Please suggest me.
    Thanks

    Hi Shabarish,
We got the certificate from the partner and loaded into the trusted CA's. I tried running by giving

  • N96 PC file transfer problem

Hi, I have just bought a brand new N96 few days ago. Everything was fine at first but when I tried to transfer files from PC to phone using latest version of Nokia PC Suite i ran into problems. File transfer just freezes in the middle of the transfer and a message says something like "connection to the phone lost" . This does not happen all the time, sometimes i transfer e.g 2 songs and on third it freezes. It happens also while installing *.sis files, and transfering images, videos, etc.
Message Edited by casualiis on 23-Nov-2008 05:26 PM

I hope you are using the usb cable!
for transferring a large number of files to the handset, it is a LOT quicker to put the n96 into 'mass storage' mode.
open the menu, open tools, open connectivity and select USB. change the usb mode to mass storage.
once you have reconnected the handset, it will appear as drives under my computer.
dont use PC suite when in mass storage mode, as it wont work correctly (and it will moan at you)
NOTE: you will now need to unplug the phone from the computer using 'safely remove hardware' that is next to the clock in windows, or you will end up damaging data.
also, if you still cant transfer files to the computer in this way, you might have to do a disk check.
mass storage mode is a lot quicker than pc suite mode!
Give it a go, and report back!

  • [SOLVED]Simple file transfer between different os'es

    Hi
I'm searching for some kind of simple file transfer between different computers/os (mainly arch and windows) on local net, without I have to set up any samba/ftp server etc. It would be perfect if i could select a file I want to transfer and then be able to receive it on a different computer.
So far I've tried giver but I most of the times they can't find each other.
Any know how I could archive something like the a bow?
    Thanks

Try using simple file sharing through http server 'oneliner's.
    - Note your host IP (which I refer to by "ip.of.your.server"),
    - Go under your directory where you want to share files and fire a command line :
    Using python : python2 -m SimpleHTTPServer 8000
And you can access your files on the network using http://ip.of.your.server:8000/
    Using php : php -S localhost:8080 -t webrootpath/
Files under webrootpath/ will be accessible from http://ip.of.your.server:8888/
    Using mongoose : mongoose -r . -p 8888
Files will be accessible from http://ip.of.your.server:8888/
You may restrict access, ie.:  -l -0.0.0.0/0,+10.60.100.105
    And have access/error logging (à la apache) too : -a access_log.txt -e error_log.txt
NB.: You may install python or php under windows but mongoose is the easiest thing when it comes to windows -> linux.

  • Stuck in file transfer mode?

I recently bought a NOkia 5310 express music phone, and I'm trying to copy some songs onto it. Whenever I try to get it set up to copy the music it says that my phone is "in file transfer mode, and cannot be use with pc suite, quit file transfer mode from the phone if you want to use the phone with pc suite". I have no idea what file transfer mode is, or how to get out of it. anyone have any idea?

    Hi,
First of all, it doesn't matter if you choose the option of "PC Suite" or "Media".  It works both way when all you want to do is to transfer music.  I personally wouldn't choose "Media".  Somehow for my N97, my Messenging will switch back from mass memory to phone memory and it is really annoying.  At times when I choose "Media", my computer says that the USB is connected in non-compatible mode etc.
One thing I notice too is that my music player would be "hanged" if connected via USB.  Nothing we can do.  To listen to your music using your phone, I reckon you have to stop the USB connection.  So that is normal.
Using menu setting to PC Suite saves you the trouble of having to select the mode EVERYTIME.  So, that too is a good choice.
Let's forget about OVI Player for a moment.  After you plug in your phone, if you start the PC Suite, you should see that your phone is detected.  If not, try reconnect the cable, try using PC Suite to connect to the phone (there is a button to do that I remember if the phone is not detected).  If still cannot, like my friend, you will probably need to reinstall the latest firmware via Nokia Care Store.
Let's say your PC Suite application can detect your phone, you may wish to see if you can transfer the music.  You may wanna do one testing here.  Open up the File Manager from your PC Suite.  Transfer the songs manually, then do a refresh at your Music Library of your phone.  You should see the tracks.  If yours is a Comes With Music like mine, you can get the licence over the air.  Once that is done, I suppose you should be able to transfer the music files via your OVI Player.  While, it is tedious, but that was how it works for me.
I wish Nokia is easier on us, but it is not.  Sorry.

  • HT204144 File transfer using Airdrop from iphone to Macbook Pro

File transfer using airdrop form Macbook Pro to iphone is working...but from iphone to Macbook Pro is not working, Why?

    Hi Brok25;
Thanks for the question.  The resource below explains the specs and settings that are needed for AirDrop.  Check the settings and look to see if your MacBook Pro is listed.
Mac Basics: AirDrop lets you send files from your Mac to nearby Macs and iOS devices - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203106
Sending files to and from an older Mac
If a Mac you're using with AirDrop was manufactured before 2012, you can send and receive files with other Mac computers.
On the sending Mac, click "Don't see who you're looking for" in the AirDrop window.
Select the option to "Search for an Older Mac."
On the receiving Mac, open a new Finder window and click AirDrop in the sidebar.
    Tips for sending files
Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on your Mac and your iOS device. Although you don't have to connect to a specific network, Wi-Fi needs to be on to send and receive files using AirDrop.
Move your devices closer together. AirDrop is designed to work within a range of approximately 30 feet (9 meters). If you need to send a file to someone farther away, consider using File Sharing, iCloud, or email instead.
If you're using a firewall on your Mac, you won't be able to receive AirDrop files if you have enabled "Block all incoming connections" in the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences.
Make sure your devices meet system requirements for AirDrop.
    System Requirements
To see if your Mac works with AirDrop, make sure you’re in the Finder by clicking the desktop (the background area of your screen), or by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock. Then, check to see if AirDrop is listed as an option in the Go menu. If you don't see AirDrop listed, your Mac doesn't support this feature.
In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
your iOS device needs to include a lightning connector
your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed
your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model with OS X Yosemite installed
Your Mac and iOS device both need bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. You do not have to be connected to a specific Wi-Fi network.
To transfer files between two Mac computers, you need the Mac models listed below with Wi-Fi turned on and OS X Lion or later installed.
MacBook Pro (Late 2008 or newer)*
MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
    MacBook (Late 2008 or newer)*
    iMac (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2009 with AirPort Extreme card, or Mid 2010)
*The MacBook Pro (17-Inch Late 2008) and the white MacBook (Late 2008) do not support AirDrop.
For help identifying your Mac, choose About This Mac from the Apple menu. You can refer to the Apple Support website to find out if your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch includes a lightning connector.
    Cheers,
    - Judy

  • Nokia lumia 610 ringtone, and bluetooth file transf...

i have nokia 610 and i have donwloaded a ringtone from marketplace i mean song and i want to set it as my ringtone
what should i do in order to set that song as my ringing tone pls tell
and more thing if i want to send any file to other mobile do i need a special software or anything like that
    thank you
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Once you have downloaded and saved the new ringtone, you can set it as your ringtone by going to Settings>Ringtones&Sounds>Ringtone, Scroll to the top because this is where you will find all your downloaded ringtone. Just select the one you want to use.
Your Lumia 610 does not support bluetooth file transfer for the moment. However, this feature will be added with the next WP7.8 update which is due soon. In the mean time you can transfer files to other phones by using Skydrive or by emailing.

  • Auto select file?

When we want to use the applet. we must choose the applet using SELECT file commad. is that any solution that we can auto select the applet and directly transfer apdu command? thank you !!

How do I know if the GP card support this feature? Do I need to contact my vendor or I would only be able to know during runtime or installation? This usually is supported on deployable cards. Not many developer cards support this feature. Because the default applet is protected by the GP, the Issuerer Secure Domain can always set it's applet the default. On developer cards, where the keys are known, the ISD isn't secure, so you can overwrite the default applet.
Is this mean that the last installed applet with default selection will always be the only default selected applet in the card?Think ! How can two applets be default selectable ? How would the JCRE know which one to send the APDU command to if there were two default applets. That defeats the definition of default !

  • Error no. 4 in SAPGUI with Graphics call or file  transfer

    Hi Experts,
I have a requirement that is " I need to display the selected data from database table in bar chart".
    I am using the Function Module " GRAPH_MATRIX_3D ".
I am getting the following error message.
" Error no. 4 in SAPGUI with Graphics call or file  transfer "
Please can any one help me on this,
It is very urgent I need to deliver this to client very soon.
    Please.....
    Thanks
    Basu

    Hi,
have a look at the pdf that comes with the download package. It describes how to structure your data (depending on the chart type).
Use the Chart Designer to create your customizing settings (chart type, colors etc) and save them as a customizing XML file.
Finally have a look at report GRAPHICS_IGS* that shows how to use the XML in your own report and send them to the IGS (by using the class CL_IGS_CHART_ENGINE).

  • Speeding Up File Transfer on Time Capsule?

I just bought the 2TB time capsule.  I would like to transfer my iPhoto Library to the TC but for 117 GB it is telling me that it will take 120+ hours to complete.  It appears to be transferring data at about 1KB every 15 seconds.  I have a MacBook Pro (10.6.8).  I have tried connecting the TC to the MBP with a Cat 6 ethernet cable but I have not noticed any major difference between that and the wireless connection.  Another thing to note is that I get a message saying my Airport Utility (version 5.6.1) is an old version and I need to update, but the latest update is only for Mountain Lion.  I don't mind waiting a long time to do this major file transfer....but 5 days seems a little too long.    I have read other discussions but I need the "Time Capsule for Dummies version".  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to switch the time capsule to being the Time Machine device
    Yes
(how do I transfer the time machine data from the external HD to the time capsule?)
It is really complicated....I haven't tried it, but know that you will not be able to transfer the backups and then keep backing up to that same file. Time Machine will start another new complete backup when you set up Time Machine to backup to the Time Capsule.
If it were me, I would hold onto the backups on the hard drive for a few weeks or even a month or two.  Then, erase the drive unless you really need all those backups from months ago.
Also, I didn't realize that time machine would also backup another hard drive as well.
That is a major feature of Time Machine.
Will TM do this simultaneously or do you have to select the drive?
You have to tell Time Machine to backup the drive by selecting it in Time Machine Options.

  • File transfer between computers?

    1) When I transfer stuff by FireWire & Migration Assistant from one computer to another, does it all go in a folder, or is it scattered throughout the recipient computer?
I have not found this answer so far in Apple Support.
Also, there seem to be slightly differing instructions in Apple Support regarding how to transfer files this way.
This is to be just a temporary transfer while I change out (add) memory in my very-disturbed iMac.
    2) Does this process remove everything from my source computer, or does it just make a copy of it all?
    Thanks for the help.
    Txgrandmater

Migration Assistant transfers to the same location as the data reside on the other computer.  MA is not intended to be used as a way to sync files from one computer to another.  It also isn't a backup utility.  Given what you intend a better choice would be a backup utility that can transfer selected files and folders across a network connection.  Possible candidates are:
    1. Transfer the data manually by drag and drop.
    2. Deja Vu
    3. SilverKeeper
    4. Tri-Backup
    5. Synk (Standard or Pro)
Look for the above at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
