Selective streaming to ATV

I have a mix of equipment, some WinXP machines, Win 2003 server, some MacBooks and my MacMini along with 2 ATV's (setup for streaming) at home. I have a photo library on my mini that I would like to allow access to from the ATV's in the house, however when I enable the ATV access to my iTunes a by product of it is that whatever I have in my iTunes library is also shared. I would very much like to inhibit sharing of say all movies in my library. Nearly all movies are shared from an iTunes running on an XP machine via the server anyway. Another alternative would be to have iPhoto (I use for my photos) create its library/albums on my server but then I don't know if an XP iTunes would "see" a mac photo library and I haven't found any way to take that approach either. Is this possible? Anyone able to point me in the right direction?

I don't think so, but I'm not sure why it would be a problem that the other media was available for streaming, it won't take any room up on the Apple tv, nor will you have to see it unless you choose to by selecting 'shared music' etc.

  • Stream from atv to antother tv

Im using my atv in the livingroom where the main tv is. But I sometimes want to stream the atv content to my bedroom tv. Is there a device that can make this possble. That doesnt cost more that a new atv in it self.

No as that is not how the ATV is designed. However there are other products that can send stuff from your computer to your TV, but will have nothing to do with the ATV.

  • Looking for a compatible HD to stream to ATV.

I am buying a new Mac Mini and external HD. The external HD will be used to store my iTunes movies folder. I understand that some hard-drives are not compatible with syncing/streaming to ATV. Can anyone recommend a compatible HD (size 1.5-2T)?
    Thanks.

not sure what you have read or have been told, but there is no such thing as an "appletv compatible HDD".
providing your mac mini can use the external HDD as normal, then there would be no problems using it with the appletv.
personally i would recommend using firewire 800 as the connection.

  • Music plays slowly on Apple TV with Remote or Streaming from ATV

When using Apple's Remote application on my iPhone or when selecting streamed playlists from my Apple TV the music plays slowly. It plays with no interruptions, what I mean is that the tempo is off. I do not have this problem when selecting and streaming through AirTunes to the AppleTV from my Mac Pro.
This started to happen with iTunes8...
Anyone else notice this? It is truly irritating to listen to music when it just isn't up to speed.

I appreciate that in a pc environment with a full blown operating system you shouldn't really need to restart to diagnose faults, however I believe we are all going to need to get used to restarting consumer gadgets on a regular basis. I've been in the habit of restarting my phone every day for around five or six years now and I didn't stop when I got my iphone.

  • Unable to Stream After ATV Update???

So i updated, as you do.
After the update was complete, add shared iTunes library in Computers section.
Punched in my code, only 2 tabs come up in iTunes for the device,Summary, and Photos.
Go back to the ATV and try to connect to my library (which i can see and is not grayed out).
It won't connect, it displays: "ATV is connected to library for streaming. To see its content, choose shared movies, shared TV shows, shared music, shared podcast, or shared photo's in the main menu"
Go back to the main menu in iTunes (this is the main menu its talking about, right??) and as i said above the only tabs displayed for that device is Summary and Photo's.
I have tried selecting photo's to stream in that tab menu, as it asked me to do, clicked apply and still it comes up with that message on the ATV.
    I can't work it out!!! Any idea's??
    Thanks for your help everyone.

The streaming is different now in new version. That message you said you saw just says, you don't stream from there anymore. Just go back to your menu (music, video, photos, etc) and then there is a submenu item (or right) for "Shared xxx" When you pick that, it will show all the connected iTunes computers that are up. There you pick which one to go to. So to stream, you just go to the "Shared xxx" option in any menu for content. You don't have to go access it via computers like before.

  • Radio stream on ATV - How?

I want to use the ATV to stream my favorite radio stations to my stereo (which is attached to the ATV). Of course I can select ATV as a loudspeaker in iTunes, however I would like to select my radio station directly from the ATV.
I have tried to copy the radio stations into a playlist which was synced once, but then shortly after all the stations in that playlist disappeared on the ATV.
However, they still show up greyed in iTunes, like the other synced media. Same happens when I add new radio stations.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks!

There have been other posts about this problem if you do some searches on "radio." Yeah, you need to have the computer with iTunes running somewhere, and you need to sync your radio playlist. BUT after awhile (perhaps overnight, after your computer has been turned off and back on?), the radio list might appear on the Apple TV, but you will find no "songs" (stations) in the playlist. Or, at other times the playlist might disappear.
I, and others, have tried numerous workarounds, but I don't believe there is a workaround that fixes the problem. The only way I have been able to listen to radio on my living room stereo reliably is to run the radio stations from my iTunes/computer, and use Airstream to select the Apple TV speakers to listen.
I do hope Apple fixes this in a future upgrade because the radio streaming is fantastic when it works, and I have found many new groups and tunes this way. Its a good way for them to increase their iTunes sales!

  • Can I stream to ATV from my AirPort?

I am using AirPort (2TB) to store video, music and photos. Can I stream video or music directly from the AirPort or do I need to put the files into iTunes and stream from there? I am currently using eyeTVHD to convert old VHS tapes into DVD. I am saving them so they can be played on ATV. Just don't want to fill my MacBook's HD with all the files. THanks.

AppleTV is fed all it's media by iTunes whether this is synced or streamed to it.
AppleTV cannot access network shares/external drives etc by itself.
You can do what you want to in theory by changing iTunes Preferences>Advanced so that media is not copied to the iTunes library which presumably resides on your Macbook - add the stuff from the Airport to iTunes and it will just keep a reference of file location to use when streaming or syncing.
Synced material, once transferred does not need iTunes to play, but to stream additional content requires itunes running.
Note - you say you're converting old video to DVD - AppleTV cannot play DVD media folders, and doesn't handle menus (except for some new iTunes Store movies) - you might need to convert your home made DVDs to h264 format. Better still would be to export the project to a physical DVD but also to create an AppleTV compatible format fro use with that - EyeOne software used to have an option to edit and convert for AppleTV but I don't have the recent update.

  • Streaming to ATV without Itunes

I know this sound crazy but, I don't always want to run Itunes. I run networks using PCs/windows and was looking to buy a simple media bridge (like Linksys makes)to stream whatever the heck I want to my stereo. Ended up buying the ATV because nothing else in stock or even marketed at the local Bust Buy and now I remember why I don't like Apple. within itunes environment it works great. I was thinking it was just a neatly packaged wireless network drive with audio and video outs (USB and eithernet too!). But now I see it is a itunes only thing. So I want to stream Pandora or output from some other software (say a software synth) to my ATV. Is this possible? It does not show up as a network device or drive.
Also, it get hot as heck.
Also, it stopped showing up as a device when I uploaded itunes 8.

It's not a case of not liking Apple, it's just that it doesn't do what you want the way you want it to, and there are plenty of other things that do that.

You were either misled by salespeople or didn't really understand what you bought - I know that doesn't make you feel better but I've been bitten in the past by making assumptions and I'm highly cautious these days to ensure things do what I want them to.
So I want to stream Pandora or output from some other software (say a software synth) to my ATV. Is this possible? It does not show up as a network device or drive.
I've never used one but will a Slingbox device do what you want?
Also, it get hot as heck.
Normal - the case is designed to dissipate the heat. I wish it wasn't so hot, but it is normal.
Also, it stopped showing up as a device when I uploaded itunes 8.
Frustrating. Sorry can't offer any hints or tips for Windows as I've been out of the loop there for a while. It may be an Apple problem, it may be something else, but it really shouldn't happen.
As an aside, I bought a refurbished AppleTv for my father, upgraded his iTunes 6.x to iTunes 8.0 and AppleTv worked like a dream, but this was a fresh 'pairing' of AppleTV with his iTunes 8.0. That was on an oldish Windows XP system I built for him a few years back, and to be honest I was expecting problems. There were a couple of odd restarts but they seemed to settle after I updated his Windows Security (machine was still running Service Pack 2).

  • MOV files not streaming to ATV

I copied a few videos that we took on our itouch to my PC and they come across as MOV files.  I then added these to my itunes library. They appear in the library; however, they are not streaming to the ATV.  I started testing a few things and noticed that other formats such at MPEG-4 works fine.  I took a few of the MOV files that I imported from the itouch - converted to MPEG-4 and now it works fine streaming to the ATV.
I would think that if videos are recorded as MOV files on the itouch that this would easily synch with the ATV.  Is this not the case?   Am I going to have to convert MOV files to MPEG-4 in order to stream to the ATV?

They would work on the newer model as well as having the ability to airplay directly from the iPod. I have posted the compatibility for the 1st ATV
H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): Up to 5 Mbps, Progressive Main Profile (CAVLC) with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 fps, 960 by 540 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
iTunes Store purchased video: 320 by 240 pixels, 640 by 480 pixels, 720 by 480 pixels (anamorphic), or high-definition 720p
MPEG-4: Up to 3 Mbps, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps (maximum resolution: 720 by 432 pixels at 30 fps) in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

  • AirPlay Audio Does Not Stream to ATV from MacBook Pro

For some reason, AirPlay will occasionally strop streaming audio to the Apple TV, usually after sleep. This has been a problem from day one, and I expected an update to fix it, but it's still a problem.
    It goes like this:
I select Apple TV from the menu bar
The screen mirrors to the Apple TV
I start playing a video, but the audio plays through the MacBook speakers
I try to switch the audio via system prefs, but while it shows the Apple TV/AirPlay, but I am unable to select it.
I then have to restart my Mac to get audio streaming over AirPlay
    So what's going on here?
My MacBook is the mid-2011 13" model maxed out with 8GB RAM.
Is it an Apple TV problem? Is it the MacBook Pro? Or is this a bug for AirPlay under mountain Lion?

    Hey Harry,
I was able to get rid of the skipping with apple's help.  In my case it was the router... so I just disconnected the coaxial and power cable for like 1 min and plugged it back in and it started to work perfectly again.  The tech said that if it continued to be an issue I should get a new router from the ISP.  Hope this helps!  Let me know if you need any other info.

  • Netflix Streaming Problem : atv-ui521:atv/nextGPS2/mdp

When I try to stream Netflix from my computer, it disconnects from airplay after approx. 30 seconds and gives an error message with the code: atv-ui521:atv/nextGPS2/mdp . Does anyone know what this error means and/or how to correct this issue?

The message appears on the ATV after airplay disconnects.
I have tried restarting both my computer and AppleTV, but I am trying to figure out what the error message pertains to so that I can address it directly.
Airplay is not being run through iTunes, I am mirroring the display through airplay.
    OS is 10.9

  • Movie would not stream to ATV

There is a few DVD that I ripped to be able to listen to them on my ATV. They always work fine. However I have an issue with the last few movies that I have ripped
    - They work perfectly fine in iTunes
    - They work perfectly fine if I stream them to my iPad 2 using Home Sharing
    - They keep buffering and NEVER play when I stream them to my ATV using Home Sharing.
Why would those movies works everywhere else besides my ATV?
    Thanks!

Discussion of techniques of DVD conversion is against Apple's forum rules and mentioned in the T&Cs.
The moderators often delete posts containing such discussions.
In general though if a movie file doesn't play it's useful to inspect the file info for bitrate and other parameters to see if it's within AppleTV2 specs - apps like MediaInfo and VideoSpec on a Mac can help with this.
It may not be the encoding however as AppleTV often says it cannot play the file if it's listed but actually incompatible for some reason.
Assuming other titles still play consider itunes library issues - it can get garbled-  maybe try the file from a different itunes library in same or different user account.

  • OTA HDTV Recorded, Converted, and Streamed to ATV ... Results!!!

Well, I just tried HD streaming and it worked flawlessly ... although it takes a bit of effort. Here is how I did it ...
    1. I recorded an OTA 720p HDTV broadcast using my El Gato Hybrid;
    2. I exported the program from EyeTV 2 as a Quicktime 1280x720 HD file;
    3. I then opened the exported QT file in Quicktime Pro and exported again again using "Movie to ATV" (I had to do this because the original QT file would not stream);
    4. I dropped the converted file in to iTunes, and streamed it to the Apple TV playing on my 44" 720P HDTV.
Final Streamable File Specs: 960 x 540 ... I am not sure why QT Pro converted the original 1280x720 file to the lower res, but it did and the file streamed and looked GREAT.
Results: I must say ... IT LOOKED SPECTACULAR. I am a bit surprised given the low-end specs of the ATV. No dropped frames, no glitches, no hiccups. If they offer HD movies on iTunes, they are going to look GREAT!
The Downside: It took FOREVER to convert the 4 minute HD QT file using QTPro.

Just an FYI ... the quality fell somewhere between OTA HDTV quality and DVD quality. I would say just about the same as cable or sat HDTV quality.

  • Can't make new hard drive stream to ATV

After my computer crashed, the hard drive was replaced but I lost all content. However, my ATV has much of my music, photos and movies so I don't want to lose this content. I would love to be able to retrieve these from ATV but I would settle for being able to keep the content and get the ATV to work with my refurbished computer. I can see my ATV in itunes devices but it only shows summary and photo tabs and the apply tab is grey so I cannot apply it. Does anyone know how I can keep the existing info on ATV and get it to recognize the new itunes library? Thanks

You can't do what you want.
    1. You cannot recover the content from the Apple TV, unless you take it to somewhere where they can remove the drive from the device and extract all the content for you.
    2. If you do sync with the new PC then it will erase the content from the Apple TV

  • Streaming from Atv to Macbook

    Hi guys,
I would like to buy an Apple TV, but before i do, i have one question.
If I put all my music from my macbook to the hard drive of apple tv (so i won't have any music on my macbook), will I be able to listen to this music with my macbook (with streaming from apple tv?)
I was looking for solutions in the previous topics but i didn't find anything...
    Thank you !

very bad idea. the TV should not hold the only copy of your precious media files. if you need to make room on your startup disk, move e.g. your iTunes library to an external HD hanging off your Mac.
check this read on how to transfer your iTunes library.
will I be able to listen to this music with my macbook (with streaming from apple tv?)
no. TV can stream music to another TV or Airport Express units but not to your computer.
