Selectively deleting messages with POP.

Hi All,
So I've yet to figure out how to get IMAP working my Yahoo email because I've got a @pacbell.net domain name... So I'm using POP for now.
On my last "smart" device, the Palm 650, using POP, you could choose to delete messages that you've downloaded 1) on the device 2) on the server or 3) on both. I haven't figured out how to do it on the iPhone.
Am I missing something or is that feature missing?
- Thanx
- Jon

PTBoater, thanks for the note. It looks like the "when removed from inbox" option would do what I want, but it doesn't seem to work for me...
Is there some trick to using this feature? Messages deleted, another POP access initiated from the iPhone, time waited, no server deletion...
In fact, that setting doesn't appear to persist - after setting it, going back in to ensure it's set, waiting 10 mins, the setting goes back to "never"...
- Thanx
- Jon

  • "Command-i" which was so useful in being able to selectively delete messages from the servers no longer works. Is their a replacement? Will it be fixed? Or should I change my mail application?

"Command-i" which was so useful for selectively deleting messages from servers has disappeared in  Maverick. I wonder if it has been replaced by something else or should I look into other mail applications.

Hmmm.  Which Mail program are you referring to?
in Mac Mail command -i used to bring up the Account info pane on the server  (10.8.5)
Now it seems you have to use the gear at the bottom in "Mail Activity" to get the drop down (10.9) :

  • Deleted messages in POP account not visible in Trash

Having a problem with deleting messages on my wife's iBook G4 (Tiger). For some reason there are 2 Trash sub-folders under the main Trash icon. One is labeled "On My Mac", and the other is labeled "POP Account".
Messages deleted from the Inbox go to the "POP Account" trash, but are not visible on the screen (clicking on the Trash icon in Mail). The deleted message can be found using finder: home/library/mail/[email protected]/Deleted Messages/Messages/name of deleted message (which is a 5 digit number followed by .emlx)
If I drag a message from the Inbox to the "On My Mac" trash folder, the message will be visible in that folder as well as when clicking on the main Trash icon.
I have set the mail account preference to erase deleted mail after one month, also selected Rebuild the mailbox with no effect on getting the deleted messages in the POP account to show.
Any suggestions on how to show the deleted messages in the Trash folder would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Joe

For some reason there are 2 Trash sub-folders under the
main Trash icon. One is labeled "On My Mac", and the other
    is labeled "POP Account".
This is normal. The "On My Mac" named Trash mailbox is used when selecting a message for deletion that is located in any user created "On My Mac" mailbox.
The POP account's Trash mailbox may have some corruption. After confirming all existing messages marked for deletion that are located in the account's Trash mailbox can be deleted, quit Mail first and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this account named folder > Deleted Messages.mbox.
Delete the Deleted Messages.mbox folder and empty the Trash.
Launch Mail and a new Deleted Messages.mbox folder will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder when selecting the next message for deletion that is located in any of the accounts' mailboxes - Inbox, Sent, etc.

  • Selectively remove messages from POP server

The one feature that is preventing me from using Mac Mail is the absence of a way (that I can find anyways) of selectively removing mail from the server.
In Entourage you can click on each or any number of messages and choose to remove those messages from serve. This is invaluable to me as I do not want to have to see all the junk mail or mail I have delt with when I get home. However may messages I do want to keep. Others I can delete from Entourage knowing I can deal with them later at home as they will stay on the server.
I know you can have mail removed once it is moved out of the in box however that means that all the mail that I want to keep on the server, I can to keep in the inbox. I do not want to have a huge number of email stay in my inbox just so I do not have to remove from server.
I would like to use Mac Mail to be able to use the spotlight features.
Anyone know of a way that I may have missed to do what I can do in Entourage?
    Thanks

    Guys,
I have the same reservations about using Mail - I want to selectively delete mail from the server. I am using 10.3.9 and Mail 1.3.11 v622. Can I use Raymac's workaround? I did not see a Get Info when I tried to find one... What is the most current version of Mail that will work with 10.3.9?

  • Can't Erase deleted Messages with apple-K keyboard command anymore...?

Last few weeks I've noticed that the keyboard command Apple -K will no longer erase deleted message....has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so, is there a workaround? Thanks in advance...
    Dual 2.0 Ghz G5, 1 GB RAM, 10.4.3
Power Mac G5 Dual 2 GB (first gen)   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Same experience here. Addidionally, while I had more than one account configured, for a while, %K would pop up a new dialog box, asking for confirmation. That was unwanted new behaviour too, I think. The dialog box went away when I removed the inactive account, though.
It's not just deleted messages that don't go away: it's the remaining copy of messages moved into other mail folders, too. This leaves "deleted" copies of messages littered throughout my (extensive) imap folder hierarchy. Aargh!
The only work-around that I've found is to use another mail client program to clean up the mail boxes.

  • Deleting Messages from Pop Server

I downloaded the new software and now my phone is deleting messages from the server when I delete the message from my phone. I checked the phone settings and it was set on "never" under deleting from server. Is this a bug in the new software. Is there a fix?

    Wjosten,
    Thanks for your continued responses.
How old is the info you got regarding Earthlink settings? I went through both my account settings, and my Webmail settings, and could not find the exact settings below. In fact, this seems to be more of a setting when you set up a desktop mail client (e.g. Part of Outlook setup). See here for an example: http://support.earthlink.net/articles/email/setting-up-outlook-2007-to-send-and- receive-email.php (it is on the last screenshot)
Regardless, I only use the webmail, and I thought that if I delete mail on the iPhone, then the setting on the iPhone to delete mail from the server should do that.
Any thoughts on whether there is something buggy with the iPhone? I had another strange iPhone problem which was fixed by deleting the acccount, logging into Gmail and recreating the account. The problem was that Gmail on the iPhone would let me send new mail, but if I tried to Reply to a message, it would not work and the error was that there was no password!

  • Delete messages with "Cancelled Manually" state (MSGSTATE is 21)?

    Hello,
I want to delete messages from master table SXMSPMAST which are in "Cancelled Manually" state i.e. the value of field MSGSTATE is 21.
I have tried running reports "RSXMB_ARCHIVE_MESSAGES" and "RSXMB_DELETE_ARCHIVED_MESSAGES" but with no success. the vlaue of the field ITFACTION is ARCH.
Can anyone guide me how do i delete these messages?
    thanks,
    Yash

    Hi Yash,
in productive sysems the messages with status 21 can not be deleted by the regular deletion report, it has to be archived first and then will be deleted by the archive job itself. so you have to configure archiving.
for non productive systems you can set the parameter ARCHIVE->PERSIST_ARCH_MANUAL_CHANGES to delete the manually changed messages, afterwards it will be deleted by the regular deletion job.
please check the SAP note 872388.
manually cancelled or manually changed messages (status 019 and 021) have to be archived. Therefore you always have to configure archiving to handle manually edited messages. Should you decide (for non-productive systems only) that you would like to delete these manually cancelled messages, please refer to Note 820149
    Thanks,
    Francis

  • Delete message with message id x from broker through API

    hi *,
is there another way of deleting a message than consuming it via specific message selector like ID = x?
i thought there should be another management API functionality to delete messages from a broker? am i wrong?
    regards chris

    hi isahashim,
sorry i did not read this thread to the end before posting this...
we are using JMQ just by using JCAPS
    ONE BIG QUESTION....
with this "unsupported" API will there be the possibility to connect to JMQ brokers that are not embedded in CAPS environments ?
we are using them in CAPS V6 because clustering works better when broker is in REMOTE mode (has his own JVM) and EMBEDDED mode has several issues afaik.

  • Erasing deleted messages with IMAP

My work email account is setup as an IMAP account and is set to just mark deleted messages (and hide them from view, not move to trash). So I've got a smart mailbox setup to collect messages older than a certain date so i can erase really old messages.
So my question is this: If i right click on the smart mailbox and click "erase deleted messages" will it erase only the messages in this smart mailbox or will it erase all deleted messages in my whole email account?

    awesome.

  • BT Yahoo webmail not deleting messages from POP se...

A client of mine accesses her personal emails via her webmail BT Yahoo account linked to her BT Internet broadband account. She also accesses another email account set up via Mail Accounts in Mail Options. The correct username, password and POP server settings have been entered and under Advanced Settings the box for "Retrieve new email only" is ticked and "Leave mail on POP server" is not ticked.
Today we discovered that her mailbox (on the server for the other account) was full and sending mail delivery failure messages to senders. I have logged onto the mail server and deleted all the messages, but we cannot work out why BT Yahoo webmail is not deleting them in the first place.
    Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Thank you, both.
Forward option: I think this may well be the only option, although when you 'reply to' emails addressed to that non-BT address using this method there is more user-intervention required in that the related email account is not selected automatically. This way the default account is selected and if you're not concentrating it's possible to reply with the 'wrong' account.
Logging off and on again: this has already been tried.
I will update this post after trying the 'forward' option.
    Thanks.

  • Error message with pop-up of PDF

I often create links that will pop-up a PDF in a new window. I use good ole Open Popup 2 for this.
It works fine in Safari.  However with Explorer I get this message "Cannot use Adobe Reader to view PDF in your web browser. Reader will now exit"  Then I click OK and the PDF will show.  This message will show up on the first click only.
Is there a way not to have this message?
    thanks.
    S. Houtzager

I had that trouble when I had Adobe Reader as well as the full Acrobat installed on the same machine.  I believe it was reader v8 and Acrobat v6 if that matters.
You may also find something in edit-->preferences about openning in a browser, but check for multiple PDF readers first.

  • No way to remove deleted messages from POP server?

I've checked around, and this seems to be like a MAJOR shortcoming of Mail.
I have Mail set to leave mail on the server for one day. This way, if I boot on my Windows partition or check webmail, my recent messages are still there.
I primarily use my Mac for checking mail. I have many rules to sort my incoming (good) mail based on clients. I also get a lot of spam and unwanted mail, which mostly winds up in my junk email folder. So I delete it immediately.
My problem is that when I check the mail from other sources, such as webmail, I have to deal with the SAME junk messages all over again.
When I used to use Entourage and other clients, there was a preference to remove messages from server when they are trashed on the local mac. Mail does not seem to have this handy feature.
There is an option to delete mail moved from the inbox, but due to my sorting rules most of my good mail is removed from the inbox (and into client-specific folders). Also, some mail is move into junk incorrectly, and therefore moved back to my inbox by me. So this option will not work for me.
This is making it hard to use mail as part of a multi-machine/platform workflow. I like it otherwise, but it seems pretty lacking in this respect, and I am disappointed with it.
    Any ideas?

What you're asking for isn't possible, not even with Entourage. You already set Mail to keep your messages for one day on the server after you retrieve them. But then you say you want it to delete them when you trash them on your Mac. Unless you are connected to your webmail server, how would you expect the server to magically discover that you've trashed something? Not even Entourage can do that; you had to have been connected to a mail server at all times in order for Entourage or any other mail client to do what you claim.
If you don't want to deal with seeing the same messages again, then you need to set Mail to delete the messages from the server as soon as it retrieves them.

  • Apple Mail: Selecting multiple messages with a common field

    Greetings ...
I'm in the midst of moving from Eudora to Apple Mail (I know, I'm old), and I'm looking through all documentation online and here in Apple Support but can't find if there's a way to do this:
In Eudora, I used to be able to Option-click on an email header's "From:" column in a mailbox, and instantly all mail in that mailbox with the matching "From:" header would be grouped together and highlighted.
This enabled me, for instance, to take action (delete, transfer, etc.) on all email from one particular source at one time with a minimum of clicks.
(This worked for any field, btw -- I could group a thread of emails on the same topic together by option-clicking on the Subject: field.)
I've tried every key combination I can think of to elicit the same response from Apple Mail. Am I missing something?
    Thanks,
    mlb

What happens when you type say the sender, or part of subject line in the search field. This should narrow your view to display only those emails matching the criteria entered in the search.

    Searching Mail
Need to find a certain email message or a string of them? You can search for specific text in any message in any mailbox using the Search field in Mail, which is powered by Spotlight technology, to find what you need fast.
Type the text that you want to search for, like "Grandma" or "New York itinerary", in the Search field in the upper-right corner of the Mail window.
Mail displays a list of its search results. Click the All Mailboxes button to display results from all mailboxes, or click Inbox to display results from your Inbox only.
