Self assigned IP address will not connect to internet

Took iMac into Apple store, Genius tech confirmed wifi connection working in store.  Cleaned out a few library files, suggested I go home and attempt to access wifi connection again.
All other Apple devices connect to Internet using WiFi connection with Airport Extreme, including one Windows laptop.
Occasionally the wifi connection on my iMac would drop out.  In system preferences I would see the network there, select it, and was good to go.  Not this time!
Went back to the Apple store to ask for help.  Tech suggested I clean out "locations", so I did that.  I also did manual set up using IP address on Airport, got message that wifi is connected but iMac not connected to Internet.  Tried Diagnostic, Assistant,  and nothing works.  Wifi is working, I am on my iPad, but cannot get this iMac computer online.
Defaults to "WiFi has the self assigned IP address 169 254  167 148 and will not be able to connect to Internet
Under that message is Network Name and mine is shown.  again:  WiFi On, Alert: No Internet Connection, Apple Network selected and working.
How much does it cost to call Apple Support?  I feel sure a grandson or nephew could fix this but no one lives nearby:-). Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Ethernet has self assigned IP Address, will not connect to internet?

Ethernet has a self assigned IP Address and will not connect to the internet.
    I am on -  Mac os X - 10.7.5
Using a BT Broadband Router, my power mac is connected to the network via TP-Link Plug POWERLINE. This has worked great for ever!
A week ago, my web connection dropped, network settings say "Ethernet 1 is active and has a self assigned IP Address and will not connect to the internet"
This seems to be a popular thread and I have followed all the answers I can find and the problem remains.
I also run a Powerbook on the wireless internet and other appliances such as, iPads, iPhones, and the wireless is fine.
My sky box and Xbox 360 (both ethernet via TP-Link) also have NO connection.
When I turn my laptops wireless off and try the ethernet cable (tried a new one too) instead, there is the same SELF-ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS issue.
This point me to the router or TP-Link network.  I have replaced the router, same errors.
On my Powermac I have -
Deleted 'system configuration from the system folder - as advised by apple.
Tried swapping from DCHP, DCHP Manual and renewing lease etc.
Could anyone help at all? I am lost now as how to solve the problems.
All my TP-Link power line extenders show the correct lights, i.e., all on and yellow.
I am not experienced in networks, this is driving me mad now!
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks
    A

    Open System Preferences/Network
Select the Location you use at home
You may need to click the Padlock bottom left at this point if it's locked, enter the admin password to unlock
In the left hand column drag the Ethernet connection to the top of the list and remove any you don't use
Click the Advanced button bottom right
    Click the TCP/IP Tab
Set Configure IPv4 to Using DHCP
Click OK bottom right and you should see the Router IP number appear and a unique but similar one for your Mac
Click Ok then click Apply and close the Panel

hey, for some reason i turned on my macbook pro 2012 and it says i have no internet access. I then found out that it also says that my self assigned ip address will not connect to the internet. How is this and how can i fix it?

    Reset your modem.

  • "Self-assigned IP address" won't connect to Internet

I have two Macs connected to my DSL modem: a MacBook Pro (10.5.2) and a PowerBook G3 'Pismo' (10.3.9). Yesterday both were working fine, but just now when I started up the PowerBook it told me "Built-in Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet." Indeed, though the cable is connected just like yesterday, there's no Internet (though the MBP is connected just fine).
Anyone have any idea why this happens, and what to do about it? I've tried disconnecting/reconnecting the cable, and restarting the PowerBook, to no avail.

Your router uses a system called DHCP to allocate an IP number to any computer connected to it. So when a computer is booted, the router recognizes its presence and allocates it a number. If the computer is running 24/7 the number's 'lease' is usually renewed every few days.
Sometimes the process falls over and the computer fails to get an IP number from the router: when this happens it allocates itself an emergency number with the results you describe. As you found, rebooting the router usually clears the problem.
It may be possible to reprogram the router and the computer to use a fixed IP number, it depends on the router. Very possibly this would prevent the problem occurring since both ends would 'know' what the number should be from the off.

MacBook Air will not connect to Internet (no problem with other devices). Message states " Wi-Fi has the self assigned IP adresss 169.254.147.1and will not connect to Internet.

First, try restarting the router. If there's no change, hold down the option key and select the Wi-Fi menu in the menu bar. What value is shown for Security?

  • Self Assigned IP address may not be able to connect to internet

I have been using my Mac laptop for several years now an connect to the internet via both the ethernet cable and wirelessly and never had any problems but today I logged on and couldnt get connected to the internet wirelessly it said Self assigned IP address may not be able to connect to the internet. I can connect via the ethernet but not wirelessly. We have two other computers in the house, one mac and one PC and they arent having any problems but my laptop is, can anyone help me, I have tried resetting PRAM if that makes sense but I can't find anything to help me or sort it out. Can anyone be of assistance, I am not technologically minded at all and usually find the mac very easy to get my head around but this has thrown me completely - if anyone can give any direction I would be greatly appreciated

You might try resetting your connection settings using the steps listed in this message:

They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take you a minute or so to try.

  • Airport: Self-assigned ip address, can't connect (public routers only)

this has been talkeda bout before, but is extremely frustrating, because i don't have the problem with a PC.
1/2 of the public routers i connect to have some kind of login page, most the time they just say "youre getting free internet, click here" ... but sometimes that login page never comes up, and the network card says "airport has a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet"
this only happens on pulic routers for me, and only ones that have login pages.
its very odd because for example, starbucks has all the same routers, all are "attwifi" now .. i go to one, i get hte login screen, go to a different one, i don't get it...and can't connect
with a PC, i get it every time.
this is undoubtably a leopard problem, that needs to be fixed. please!

The wifi icon shows no connection with the network -- the "!" mark.
However the computer sees the network, i.e. when I search in Network Preferences the network is listed.
So: 1) the computer sees the network but 2) will not connect to the network. The reason given for refusal to connect is "self-assigned IP address".
Not to be repetitive but two other Mac laptops are connected to the same network and working perfectly. The network preferences, as shown in the "advanced" section, are the same for all machines, i.e. DHCP is selected and IPv6 is Automatic.

  • Self-assigned ip address -- can't connect to Airport

I have a 2006 MacBook Pro which recently started exhibiting the exact same behaviour as reported by another poster in 2011:
For some reason the computer has started self-asigning its IP address and Network Preferences says that, because of the self-assigned IP, i cannot connect to the network.
I have two other Macs connecting to the same Air Port with no issues and I've tried to duplicate those settings on the MacBook Pro but still get the "self-assigned ip" message
Tried re-setting SMC and PRAM, no change.
The only change to my wireless setup was the change from a Verizon-owned modem to an owned Motorola unit (but the MacBook Pro connected successfully, many times, after the change).
I didn't knowingly change anything on the MacBook Pro -- from one day to the next it just stopped connecting.
I'm really at a loss to understand what's going on and, of course, not happy that the MacBook Pro can't connect to my network anymore! Help!

  • TS1398 My ipad says it is connected to WiFi, which is workingly perfectly for several other devices, will not connect to internet.  It keeps giving the message 'Cannot Connect' or error has occurred or just blink off site or icon?

My ipad says it is connected to WiFi, which is workingly perfectly for several other devices, will not connect to internet.  It keeps giving the message 'Cannot Connect' or error has occurred or just blink off site or icon?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Green light on Airport Extreme but will not connect to internet

I have tried restarting computer and Airport Extreme but it will not connect to internet.  Unit has been working great up until now.  I have made no changes in system.
This Airport/time machine is 2009 version.

The Cisco DPC 3010 is a cable modem, so you will need to let the modem completely reset before you connect it to the AirPort Extreme.
It may be necessary to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme and reconfigure it, but we will try a shortcut first to see if that can be avoided.
Power off the entire network.....all devices....modem, AirPort, computers, mobile devices, etc in any order that you want.
Be sure to disconnect the power cable on the modem, either on the back of the device or pull the power cord from the wall AC jack
Leave everything powered off for at least 30 minutes.  Longer is better, as it sometimes takes the equipment back at the ISP longer to completely reset and issue a new fresh IP address to the modem.
After the wait period, power up the modem first, and let it run for at least 5 minutes by itself. If your modem documentation states that the modem should be powered up for 15 minutes, then go with 15.
Power up the AirPort Extreme next, and let it run a few minutes
Then power up other devices one at a time about a minute apart
When the entire network is back up, check the network.
It this does not work, you will have to start over again as above, except this time you will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme.
To do that, power off the AirPort Exterme for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Extreme.....and keep holding it in for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Extreme
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Power off the AirPort now, and start it back up in the proper sequence
If things still don't work, then you likely have a defective AirPort Extreme that will need to be replaced.

  • Airport shows being connected but will not connect to internet

Airport will not connect to internet yet shows me as connected.
When and if I do get connected, I will loose the connection and unable to access the internet.
This has happened using several different wireless locations.
Please help as to what my settings should be or how to correct the problem

What debugging steps have you taken?
Connecting to your wireless network and connecting to the Internet are two different parts of the connection process.
If you open your Network preferences panel does it show you have an IP address of the form 169.x.x.x?

  • All of a sudden my iTunes 10.1.1.4 will not connect to internet radio

    Hi all,
All of a sudden yesterday, my iTunes 10.1.1.4 will not connect to internet radio. It has otherwise been working fine for almost two years.
My internet connection is working fine for web browsing and email.
I ran the iTunes diagnositcs and it showed me how to go in to the Windows Firewall settings to check to see if there was a connection... there was already one for iTunes in the list of accepted connections. Just to be sure, I created a new iTunes connection exception and it didn't help.
The iTunes diagnostics test shows all information as being normal except this info, pasted in below, about the Firewall test...
    Firewall Information
    Windows Firewall is on.
iTunes is NOT enabled in Windows Firewall.
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was successful.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was unsuccessful.
    The network connection timed out.
But this information is partially incorrect, according to the Windows Firewall settings themselves.  My Windows Firewall settings show that iTunes is indeed enabled in Windows Firewall.
I can access the iTunes store, but there doesn't seem to be any test in the iTunes diagnostics that makes it test to see if it is connecting to the iTunes internet radio server.
Is there possibley a current problem happening with the iTunes internet radio connection?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    numetro

    Hi movem,
Are you saying that Apple has changed the URL for every internet radio station in the entire iTunes radio station library?... or are you suggesting that just some of the internet radio stations in my playlist changed their own URLs?
It seems unlikely that it happens to be that every single internet radio station in my playlist of a hundred radio stations all happened to change thier URLs at the same time, since all of the stations in my playlist will not play from that playlist.
When I went through and found some of the radio stations in the giant default internet radio station library in iTunes, I found some of my old ones that were in my playlist and they play fine and they can be put in to a new playlist and they play fine there too, but the very same stations still will not play from my old original playlist.
So it makes sense if you are saying that Apple has somehow changes all the URLs for all the radio stations in iTunes, because that make sense since they all play from the main radio library.
But, otherwise, to say that all the radio stations in my playlist happened to change their own URLs at the same time, that would be a bit far fetched.
Did you get some news from Apple that this happened, one way or the other?
PS: I'm having a hard time finding a few of the stations that were in my previous, original playlist as well... some of them have either disappeared, changed categories, gone off the air or changed their names.
    Thanks,
    numetro

  • MBP upgraded to Yosemite and now will not connect to Internet using a Cisco router

I Upgraded my MBP mid 2010 to Yosemite and now it will not connect to Internet using a system that involves typing in my user name and password in an auto pop up window provided by Cisco security systems. Before, using Mavericks, it worked perfectly: boot up MBP and the Cisco pop up auto loaded. Typed it my password and hey presto, connected to Internet. Now, zilch. There is nothing wrong with the Cisco cos my iPad connects ok, as do both my iPhone's.
the problem is with Yosemite therefore. Please help. I tried all the usual diags, etc to no avail.

Sounds like there could be some kind of compatibility issue between ICS and this Bluetooth device of yours. Is there any compatibility info from the manufacturer about which Android versions that's being supported?
