Self-assigned IP - No connection

I have a perfectly fine IP address when I'm hardwired, and a full signal, but no internet connection. Here's the steps I've taken. What am I missing?
-Obtained a valid IP address and connection by connecting my Powerbook G4 to my cable modem via ethernet.
-Turned off my computer, unplugged the cable modem, and let them sit, powered down, for over thirty minutes.
-Plugged the modem and Airport Base Station together via ethernet cord.
-Plugged the power into the cable modem. Waited for it to boot completely.
-Plugged the power into the base station. Waited for it to boot completely.
-Booted my laptop. AirPort: On. Full signal. No internet connection.
-System Preferences>Network>Network Status: "Airport is connected to the network home. AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet."
-System Preferences>Network>AirPort> Configure IPv4: Using DHCP; IP Address: 169....
-Released and Renewed. Turn AirPort on and off. Released and Renewed again. Still 169 IP.
-Called ISP, said I was getting a good signal, problem must be on my end.
-Ran Network Set-up Utility. Get this error: Your computer could not connect to the Internet. Click OK to go back and change your network settings, and try again.
-Fails, fails, fails.
What is wrong? What am I doing wrong? And how can I make it right?

PrincessofMars,
I am getting the same issue. I just moved and got a cable modem from my internet company and went to set up my airport, old snow version, and I can't get both of my computers (pre-intel Mini and old ibook) to both work at the same time. I have been getting the "Self-Assigned IP - No connection" message as well. I have my mini working with the airport, but I can't get the laptop to work and I don't want to have to keep plugging in and unplugging stuff just to get the computer I am working on to connect to the internet.
Is it time possibly for me to just upgrade to a new Airport system?

  • Airport self-assigned IP not connected to internet

Hi, Could someone please help with my problem - I have been hacking away at this for 2 nights with no success. I have 3 computers trying to connect to the internet using an Airport Extreme.
-AirPort Extreme is set up and not reporting any problems
-my MacBook Pro (10.6.6) is wirelessly connecting fine
-my MacBook (10.5.8) used to wirelessly connect fine, but since a reboot of the AirPort Extreme on the weekend it has not connected. AirPort is On with message "AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet". There is an IP address of 169.254.122.47
-my G5 (10.5.?) is also showing a self-assigned IP when connecting wirelessly
I have rebooted modem and AirPort Extreme, changed passwords on the wireless network, updated AirPort Utility, connected via ethernet (works fine)
Getting desperate - any help much appreciated

  • "Self Assigned IP Address" - connected, no internet access

I have a Netgear WGT624 v2 wireless router that is hard wired to one iMac while other laptops have wireless access to it. This set-up has been working fine for awhile - but now the laptops are saying that they are connected via the router, but they've created "self assigned IP addresses."
I called Netgear tech support and they had no answers, all they would do was make sure that the laptops were able to find the router, which they can, they just can't connect. Why are they creating their own IP addresses?
Is there a solution to this problem? What causes it?

Check your setup in the router for wireless clients. Log on to it and make sure that DHCP is enabled if you use it and you are in infrastructure mode ( wired/wireless combo ). Also, if the clients are B or G mode, make sure the router is set correctly to that mode or mixed. If the IP addresses are 169.254.xxx.xxx then they aren't really getting an address ( this may only happen in Windows, don't remember). If you don't use MAC address filtering for security, a blank list could have been turned on........ anyways, go through all your router configurations for wireless and make sure they are the same or close to the settings for the wired Mac that works. Probably just a checkmark somewhere that isn't supposed to be. Has anyone been in there messing with it? Good luck.

  • Airport has "self assigned ip", no connection to internet but network ok

This is weird... the internet connection was working OK on my G5 desktop yesterday, today it doesn't... my work computer I brought home connected fine a few days ago but now it doesn't, the MacBook Pro I am writing this question with is working fine (hope it holds on to the connection!), our 2 iPhones are connected too. In the network settings for airport it says "self assigned ip address". Thanks in advance for any tips to correct this issue. Is this a glitch in the latest system update?

I solved my problem by reinstalling 10.5.5 and not doing the updates to 10.5.7. I don't know for sure if it is the update to 10.5.7 or the airport updates that caused my problem.
I out my old drive back in my Macbook and I had wireless again. So I out my new drive in and did the reinstall and now it works. There is a conflict with either the 10.5.7 update or the Airport update.
APPLE REALLY NEES TO FIX THESE ISSUES. you can read about them all over the internet. Many have just updated to 5.7 and then they have a problem.
So archiving and reinstalling 5.5 solved my problem. My old drive has 5.6 and it works. If had a copy of 5.6 I would have used that.
I will try doing another update to 5.7 and see if it still works. If that works I will update the airport.

  • Self-assigned IP****cannot connect to university wireless network

After i installed snow leopard I cannot connect properly to my university network. It says that a self assigned IP and cannot connect to the internet.
I have tried many things but nothing seems to change this problem
I need to be able to connect to the internet at school.

I have the same problem with the Exchange server at my work. Once I loaded Snow Leopard, no access. I can get on my Time Machine at home fine and can even access the open WAP at work, but since Snow Leopard access to the Exchange server is gone. The hype for Snow Leopard says easier access to Exchange services but I can't find any info on what that means anywhere. Anybody find the Exchange info?

  • Macbook Pro stuck on Self-Assigned IP when connecting to hotel Wifi

my travel mates are having no problems connecting to hotel wireless.
i can connect to the access point, but i can't get online. my network pane in system preferences says "self-assigned ip" and it won't do anything else.
we're all on macbooks or higher. 10.5.6 or 10.5.7
i've tried replicating the working macs' IP settings as a manual config on my MBP. no luck. it's very odd. i'm stuck. any ideas?
i've used onyx to clear out all caches. done a full shut down, restart, pram reset. toggling my airport card power. i can connect using my Verizon wireless (like now, as i type this). my travel mates also use the same Verizon modems and software. i don't think that that's causing a problem.

This was happening to me at my office today. It kept saying that it had Self-Assigned IP. My ISP told me that it wasn't recognizing my router.
First, I made sure that the Under TCP/IP that "Configure IPv4" was set at "Using DHCP" from the drop-down menu and then I shut my computer down. I then reset my modem and linksys router (unplug power to back of modem first and then router, then plug modem back in, wait for 4th light of modem to go on,then plug router back in). After that, I restarted my iMac and it Configured IPv4 correctly using DHCP. Sorry if I'm being too basic, don't have a lot of networking knowledge. I've asked the hotel I was staying at before to reset their modem/router and they were able to do this for me.

  • Dreaded Self Assigned IP - ethernet connected G4

Hi all - i have just rebooted my ageing G4 (again) to use as a media server.
Couple of months ago all was working well, now it won't connect to the internet - it streams to AppleTV fine but in the Network section it comes up 'Self Assigned IP' - i am attempting to connect using ethernet.
I have tried all the fixes, deleting preferences, renewing leases, resetting pram, restart everything! etc
The only difference between this morning and the last time i had it on is that I needed to reset the time and date on the G4.
It is running 10.5.6 (i cannot connect it to get any updates!)
    Any help - always appreciated

If possible, test with another router or switch, or plug the Ethernet cable directly into the broadband device. Otherwise see below.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Ethernet not working... self-assigned ip almost everytime

    Hi,
Just having a few issues with my new macbook. Everytime I try to connect to a router or an internet connection with an ethernet cable, after my macbook attempts to connect it comes up saying self-assigned address and connected.
The issue is everytime I have DHCP enabled and every PC I connect with the cable, works first time, everytime.
Just a little concerned I may have a hardware issue since it seems really strange that this would work.
I should add that occasionally it does work (maybe 1 out of every 20 or 30 attempts) and as long as i dont disconnect it is fine.
I have tried restarting the computer, updating to the latest software, but still not change.
Has anyone experienced anything similar and/or have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jake

    Hi Dave,
Thanks for answer.. The issue is that its not just on one connection. I live in student housing and we just have to plug a ethernet cable into the socket on the wall and it is meant to receive an ip address from the dhcp.. i can assign a manual one, which iv tried after recording the ip the dhcp gives me, but eventhough it says connected, it still doesnt work.. Since then I have tried at university, with the same problem of getting a self-assigned ip.
its gotten to the point where i purchased a wireless router so i could plug that into the wall at home and have wireless internet, funny thing is i couldnt set it up because when i tried to use the ethernet cable to connect, i had the same problem. Had to borrow my girlfriends pc to get it up and running.
Thanks for your assistance. I'll be sure to try what you suggested when i get home but i still am worried its a hardware issue as its happening at different locations.
    cheers,
    Jake

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

I need help please i have been searching all over the web for help and i see people has been having this same problem for years now.. oh yeah and i know it is not the internet cuz there are other macs connecting to it without a single problem so i think it is an isolated problem plase help....i have follow many advises such as delete the internet from your prefered netwoks. restar your commputer etc etc.

Be sure Safari does not have the Block Pop-Up Windows preference set.

  • Self assigned ip and can't connect wirelessly on any apple device

Man oh man... this issue has been festering for almost an entire year now and I have not found a solution. Last August (2009) my macbook stopped wirelessly connecting to my ATT 2WIRE dsl modem saying it had a self assigned ip address. I bought the computer in July and could connect with no issues for about a month. Ever since then, I've been connected via ethernet with slow connection. At the same time, the 2 iPhones in our household also could not connect wirelessly. One G5 could connect wirelessly but was extremely weak and often dropped the signal.
I did tons of research and found zillions of other people with this issue and no resolution. I've tried every solution on macrumors, and apple discussions with no results... I've disabled firewall, renewed DHCP, tried DHCP manual (which then changes the status to say I'm connected, but nothing works in my browser), restarted, etc. At work, I can connect to our Linksys router wirelessly with no issues. When my friends come over, their macbooks and iPhones don't work either!
Originally I thought the issue was my modem so I ordered another one. Same issue. Just this week I was at my wits end and cancelled my service with ATT and switched to Clear. I acquired a Linksys router to connect to the Clear Modem and I'm STILL having this issue. The difference is now that my iPhone can connect wirelessly but my macbook still cannot. The router is a Linksys WRT51ab. My macbook pro is on version 10.5.8. I can only assume that some kind of update to airport is causing the problem. As of now, my IPv4 address is: 169.254.111.225
Please someone help me! I promise some kind of reward if you can help me fix this.

Based on the model number, your Linksys router is OLD.
I'd actually suspect that your router has been the problem.
You can download the full user manual here --> http://homedownloads.cisco.com/downloads/wrt51ab_ug.pdf
I don't know if you ever secured your wireless router or renamed it from the factory defaults.
If it your Linksys wireless router is not password secured, it's possible that someone else changed settings about the time things stopped connecting.
Regardless, you can completely reset the Linksys to the factory defaults by holding down the Reset button on the Linksys for more than 10 seconds.
    Do that first.
Then see if things 'magically' start connecting again. I'm guessing the phones will connect, but the Mac still won't, because of the IP address in the current configuration.
If not, here's how to configure your Mac network settings.
On your Mac, in System Preferences, Internet and Network, Network,
    Click on Location, Edit Location
Click the + sign to create a new location called '_test'
(The underscore before the name will put it at the top of your Locations list where it's easy to find)
    Select Ethernet (wired)
First, we'll let DHCP try to set the address.
    Click Apply.
Move the selection back to Ethernet, and watch the Status.
If it shows Connected and IP address appears after a few moments, at least the WIRED configuration is working.
Now IF the Wired configuration works, lets move on to the wireless configuration...
(If the Wired configuration is still not working, post back and we'll work through it.)
Still in System Preferences, Internet and Network, Network, with the _test location you just created...
Select the AirPort interface in the left column.
    Turn AirPort On.
If no Network Name appears, click on the up/down button and select Join Other Network and select your Linksys router name.
    Click 'Apply'.
Leave DHCP settings alone and watch the Status to see if it connects.
    Let me know what happens!

  • MacBook Pro can't actually connect to Wi-Fi with Self-Assigned IP

    Hi there
I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro and it can connect to Wi-Fi but have no actual data coming in. And it says self-assigned IP.
This only happens to my home Wi-Fi, however, I can connect and use Wi-fi at school or anywhere else perfectly. In the mean time, my Android phone and my flatmates' Windows have no problem using the Wi-Fi. The problem has been going on and off for a month, sometimes it works again and sometimes it goes wrong like this again.
During this time I mostly use my other MacBook Pro 13 inch Retina. Until today, this problem happens on my 13 Retina mac for the first time, and the 15 Pro again as well. A few days ago, my 15 Pro started working again, and today they just gone wrong together at the same time.
I just found out that my 15 pro can still work if connected to ethernet, but I can't just work in the living room, where the router is. And as you know Retina doesn't support Ethernet.
I've check on the Internet and found many people have the same problem as I do. I also tried lots of ways to fix it with the information I found online. And nothing works. I even suspect that it's actually my flatmate blocks me out with some setting on the router (Is it possible?)
Anyways, can someone please help me fix it thoroughly... Please and thanks.

Each country regulates wireless networking differently. Wi-Fi devices are restricted to certain frequencies and power levels. The client devices try to find out where they are and configure themselves accordingly. Since a wireless access point (WAP) usually does not move across national boundaries, the Wi-Fi regulatory domain (country code) is set by querying the first one to respond when the client initializes itself. You don't have any direct control over it on the client. If your device is picking up the wrong country code, and is therefore locked out of using some Wi-Fi channels or operating at full power, the only lasting solution is to fix or remove the misconfigured WAP.
To find out which WAP's are broadcasting a wrong country code, do as follows.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /S*/*/P*/*/*/*/*/airport -s | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. The first line should look like this:
SSID BSSID RSSI CHANNEL HT CC SECURITY (auth/unicast/group)
Each line below that one represents a WAP within range. Compare the two-letter code in the column headed "CC" with the ISO code for your country. The code "X0" means that the country couldn't be determined. If a WAP with a wrong code is not under your control, try restarting the computer as close as possible to your own router.
