Self-assigned IP - no internet
My computer shows self-assigned IP and will not connect to the internet. I have no internet through wireless airport extreme base. Everything was working fine until I tried to add airport express. I have read on line tips to fix this but have not found a solution. I need help!
I'm guessing that you had the Airport Extreme first, and that everything was working with it.
I'm guessing that you bought the Airport Express to extend the Airport Extreme network, but that it actually is not configured that way. Thus it has no connection to the Internet (either wirelessly or through its unused Ethernet).
I'm guessing that you tried to connect your Mac to the Airport Express, and because there was no Internet connection, you then got a self-assigned (fallback IP) numbers.

a friend just had FIOS installed at her house and after it was set up she was able to connect to the internet. i came over later in the day to join her airport express to this WiFi network by using airport utility (she wanted to have her printer available on the network). after i tried setting it up using her macbook (it failed because the WEP key used by verizon is 64 bit and apple only supports 128 bit) and rejoined the FIOS router network we lost the internet connection. in network preferences it showed a self--assigned IP address but no internet connection status. i've tried deleting this network from the joined network list, deleted the password from keychain and then rejoining the network, putting in the password when prompted. still the same "no internet connection" status. any ideas?

My TC is a 3rd gen.
I actually had to reset to standard defaults not only once but twice. The first time I simply returned to my old profile but that only led to the same message error on the network settings (i.e. IP by default, cannot connect to the internet). Therefore the second time around I kept my profile as backup and re-created a new one plus a guest one.
The airport utility then signaled to issues remaining:
1) Internet access was cut - this I solved by simply reseting the cable modem
2) There were no DNS Servers - I simply copied the ones I had from the previous setup and it worked
I did have AppleCare....
I'm online again and I hope for good.

PS. a small tip - I made captures of all my settings in Network settings, Airport Utility and Network utility using Grab in case of ... if anything it is just handy to get back settings that your are missing when setting up a new configuration -
I was working yesterday afternoon when the wifi suddenly went cold. Initially on the MacBookPro and on the ethernet connected PC. I reinitialized modem and TC through the mac and then the ethernet on the PC worked again and has since.
I've reinitialized both the modem and TC many times, as well as checked the cables. Moreover, I've tried to renew the DHCP lease, provide the DNS servers manually, erased all networks in Network preferences and in KeyChain etc. but nothing seems to work.
One strange thing also happened. I had two networks created, one for me and one I created for guests. The latter one just vanished, dissapeared without a trace.
I've tried from the café down the street and the Wifi worked perfectly well though a little slow, but that could be their connection not the Airport. Therefore, my I deduct that there is either something wrong in the TC or something went wrong in the network settings in the Mac. But that doesn't help to move forward and fix the darn thing.
The only thing I haven't done is completely reset the TC, but after reading a couple of help threads on different forums I'm confused as to how to proceed to get it back to worrk? Has anyone had the same or similar issue and found a solution?

Self-assigned IP on one device at startup which eventually corrects itself
I use a Time Capsule as my primary wireless router (full disclosure: an Airport Express also acts as a repeater, and a wired Netgear router is also connected). 8 out of 9 devices connect wired and wirelessly without any issue, except for a wireless MacBook Pro which always boots and wakes with a self-assigned IP (no internet connection) despite a successful connection to my WPA wireless network. After 3-5 minutes, and perhaps coincidentally after a Time Machine backup is started manually or automatically, the internet connection rights itself.
I have tried every solution I could find - at least a dozen - including resetting all devices and waiting, deleting airport preferences, renewing DHCP lease, uninstalling and reinstalling Airport, deleting and creating locations, deleting keychain entries, turning off firewall, updating firmware and software, safe mode reboot, etc. Can anyone offer any last wisdom?Siouxnil wrote:

From your description I'm guessing you tried the steps below. If not, you might try the remaining ones.
1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
2) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
3) In the same panel as (2), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
4) In the folder /Library/Preferences (not <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work. -
My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem,how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly. -

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.

My macbook air will not connect to the internet due to a self assigned IP address. I have tried trawling the support forums for hours, but either I can't understand the suggestions, or they don't work. Please explain to me in simplest terms how I can fix this. Many thanks!

i am currently using 10.6.8 snow leopard
i usually access internet through my broadband modem and wifi at home.
i've been using our home wifi network for almost 1 week now (since it's new) and almost everyone at home use it as well.
and im using my broadband everytime i go out.
this last week, i went to a vacation and i use the wifi connection of the hotel where i stay in.
my connection works fine and so i don't use my broadband anymore.
then i got home..
when i got home.. i tried to connect to our home wifi network again .
like what im doing before, im clicking the airport icon on the top of my desktop,
and since my airport is always on, the next step that im doing is to click the preferred network that i want to join and put the password on it.
this is perfectly working in my macbook before i left.
but now , it's not working to my laptop anymore! i can't connect to it!
after putting the password and hitting the enter, the airport icon at the top will run, however after seconds it showing gray color with exclamation point on it!
the alert is showing : No internet connection
but the network i joined is still checked and showing full signal !
i tried checking my Network under system preferrence and the airport tab in the left corner is showing me a message that
my airport has the self-assigned IP address 169.***.****.** and will not be able to connect to internet!
i don't know what happen and i dont understand why is this happening since everyone at home can still use and access our home wifi !!

CAn't connect to Internet Through Time Capsule-Self Assigned IP Adress
My iBook battery died. After connecting to power source, I can't connect to the internet. I get a message that the iBook is self assigning the IP address. How do I correct this? I've removed the battery & done several restarts with no success.
Here's 10.4 directions, not to different from 10.5, see if it helps...
Go to System Preferences
Click Network
Highlight AirPort and click Configure...
Choose “By default, join: Preferred networks”
Select your access point and Remove your access point with the minus button.
Launch your keychain access in Utilities and delete your access point keychain entry.
Reboot
Go back to the “By default, join:” page and click the plus this time to add your access point. Enter the correct password, save, reboot. -
Self-assigned IP address which is not able to connect to the internet.
Okay, so my whole issue started around six or more months ago. I have a white MacBook which I have never particularly had any connectivity problems with, at least that where caused by my laptop. I constantly am on the internet at home and have never had issues with wireless connection here. I am a full time student which means I am also constantly on campus with my laptop and needing access to the internet. Even so, there I have never had any issues with connectivity.
My issue is when I go to another university campus I am unable to connect to the internet. My airport finds the network I want and connects to it but usually within a few seconds the radial bars go a light gray and have an exclamation point through them . When looking under the Airport drop down list it simply says, "Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet." This particular IP that is not allowing me to access the internet starts off with 169.**.*.**. I would provide the entire IP but as I am not on that campus at the moment, I can't and don't remember it fully.
I have tried SO many different things in order to find a solution but have come up empty handed every time. I've tried turning off my firewall and all of the steps that resolution includes and have also tried to resolve the issue through the creation of a new location, new network, and the use of network assistant on Airport.
I know it is not an issue of the universities wireless network because I can easily connect to the internet through my Ipod Touch without a password simply by finding the network, connecting, stating I'm a guest, and then agreeing to the terms of use. Same goes for my local campus wireless network on both my Ipod Touch and MacBook.
I am in extreme need of a resolution and would GREATLY appreciate any kind of feedback anyone can give me. If there is any other information you may need to help me out a little more accurately just let me know, I'll be happy to give you whatever I can so that I may figure this annoyance out!By the way, totally didn't mean to categorize this under Airport for Windows. This is my first post and OBVIOUSLY a figured out a way to mess it up. My bad. :S

Can't connect to internet..self assigned ip address problem with DSL Modem
I've run into this before, without resolution, and now again on a friend's iMac. Time to ask around...
Basically, everything appears to be assigned and configured perfectly, but the network status always shows, "...you have a self assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet". Sure can't connect to the net when it says that.
I've gone thru the procedure advise before that details the sequence of events needed to insure the modem resets and recognizes the Mac and it's incoming DSL (sbcglobal) signal. The order of network priority is set properly by dragging built in ethernet to the top of the list. Modem was powered down, plugged in, and then connected to the Mac, but no solution. Any ideas? thanksThis continues to be a mystery. I've had my powerbook on several networks, and connection has, most of the time, been an automatic process. Additionally, I've installed new systems for people with the same isp, and all has been well. So easy is the process, it's never been an issue. However, following explicit procedural instructions (including powering the Mac down), has proven unsuccessful on 2 different occasions.
There is little help with the isp support in India, which is where the call routes too.
The only thing I have not done is to swap out the cable at one of the locations, but the other location, which has the same issue, works fine on the iMac there. Only when I connect my Powerbook to the modem, does the "...self assigned ip address...not be able to connect to the internet" appear.
I just keep thinking there has got to be a small detail that is being overlooked. -
"Self-assigned IP address" won't connect to Internet
I have two Macs connected to my DSL modem: a MacBook Pro (10.5.2) and a PowerBook G3 'Pismo' (10.3.9). Yesterday both were working fine, but just now when I started up the PowerBook it told me "Built-in Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet." Indeed, though the cable is connected just like yesterday, there's no Internet (though the MBP is connected just fine).
Anyone have any idea why this happens, and what to do about it? I've tried disconnecting/reconnecting the cable, and restarting the PowerBook, to no avail.Your router uses a system called DHCP to allocate an IP number to any computer connected to it. So when a computer is booted, the router recognizes its presence and allocates it a number. If the computer is running 24/7 the number's 'lease' is usually renewed every few days.
Sometimes the process falls over and the computer fails to get an IP number from the router: when this happens it allocates itself an emergency number with the results you describe. As you found, rebooting the router usually clears the problem.
It may be possible to reprogram the router and the computer to use a fixed IP number, it depends on the router. Very possibly this would prevent the problem occurring since both ends would 'know' what the number should be from the off. -

I have been using my Mac laptop for several years now an connect to the internet via both the ethernet cable and wirelessly and never had any problems but today I logged on and couldnt get connected to the internet wirelessly it said Self assigned IP address may not be able to connect to the internet. I can connect via the ethernet but not wirelessly. We have two other computers in the house, one mac and one PC and they arent having any problems but my laptop is, can anyone help me, I have tried resetting PRAM if that makes sense but I can't find anything to help me or sort it out. Can anyone be of assistance, I am not technologically minded at all and usually find the mac very easy to get my head around but this has thrown me completely - if anyone can give any direction I would be greatly appreciated

Self-Assigned IP....Internet Not Working

Let me start off by saying I have absolutely no idea how this happened. I went to start my Macbook this morning and the Internet didn't work. Usually this is not big deal, and I just unplug the router and everything works fine. However, this time (for whatever reason) was different. When I go to my network settings, it says "Self-Assigned IP" under Airport and that "AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet." I was browsing other forums, and found that sometimes renewing the DHCP lease works. I did this, and still no Internet.
How do I fix this??

Although I think my router is dying - I hooked my Macbook directly to my modem and my network said that it had a self-assigned IP address but could not hook up to the internet (although it had green lights for the Ethernet, Network settings and ISP)....
I used the 'Automatic' location and the DCHP with manual address setting (or it was the Manual setting) - I got told that what it is doing is just randomly selecting a IP address to use but the address it chooses isn't actually able to work...
(This what I was told) - I entered my IP address (I had copied it down from previous network setups) and I had to type in my router address (even though I wasn't using one I still had to have a number for it to use) - plus a subnet address.....
After that it picked up my internet and works ok......I have to get a new router so hopefully I can connect it all up as it was before.....
This may help - although my set up is slightly different....
