Self life of Li-Ion battery on new but old Apple laptop stock?

Just bought a MBP MD101LL/A. It is brand new. Because it is a 2012 model, I am concerned about the Li-Ion date of manufacture. If the DOM was 2 years ago will apple replace it? Li-Ion is reported of having a service / self life of based on age and not just cycles (Professor Jeff Dahn of Dalhousie University). Depending on how the battery is stored the self life could be as low as 1 to 2 years.

Yes this would be a problem. You should talk to the manager of the Apple store where you purchased the MBP and ask him to address your concern.

  • New vs old apple TV as music server

I'm currently using an Apple TV as our music server, though because it runs hot and sits in our cabinet, I have to reset it all the time. I'm intrigued by the new Apple TV, but also know that it only does streaming music as it doesn't have an HDD.
    For the new Apple TV:
    1. Would I need to keep my computer on all the time if I wanted to use the Apple TV and stream music?
    2. Is there a way to attach a dedicated hard drive to the Apple TV either directly or through our home network so that I could listen to music without needing to have our computer on?
One of the best things about the old Apple TV was music that was on the Apple TV itself, but of course, it meant it ran hot and would need to be reset a lot.
    Any recommendations?

    I assume so.

    I assume not.
However since no-one has one yet I could be proved wrong.

  • New iToy, old Apple ID

We bought the kid an ipod touch for Christmas.  Wife has an ipad and iphone 4 with her apple id and I have a 4S with my apple ID (big mistake, I know).  I want the kid to use mom's apple id since that's the one tied to the ipad and the kid gets ipad apps on it.  Please help me make sure I do the right thing concerning IDs, itunes, etc.
    1. Create an icloud email acct for the kid under moms apple ID (I'm guessing it would help w/ iMessage??)
    2. Set up the allowance feature for the kid so she can purchase music/apps without pinging my CC acct
    3. Set up Find My Friends

While I've not done it, it looks to me that in order for your wife to purchase store credits to give to someone else, her account will have to have a valid credit card associated with it.  That means anyone with that AppleID and password can purchase to their hearts content, as it will be charged to the credit card on file with the account.
Fromt he link I posted before:
Before you set up an iTunes Allowance
Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer. To download the latest version (it's free!), visit the Download iTunes webpage.
You must have your own iTunes Store account with an accepted credit card on file. If you don't already have an iTunes Store account, open iTunes and create a new account.
If your recipient has an iTunes Store account, you will need to know his or her account name, also known as an Apple ID. The iTunes Store account name must be in the form of an email address. If your recipient doesn't have an account, have his or her email address handy.    Important: If your recipient already has an iTunes account, it's important that you use it when setting up an allowance. Otherwise, it will be difficult for your recipient to manage his or her purchased music.
You want the kid to have an AppleID account with NO credit card information associated with it, and the only credits it gets are the store credits your wife purchases and assigns to it.
Also, your iMessage account is primarily tied to an AppleID account - you must use an AppleID to activate iMessage in the first place, then you may assign alternate emails to receive messages at.  Since the AppleID is the primaty account (anything else is really nothing more than an alias to that), all iMessage traffic will always go to the AppleID's primary registered email address.

  • Li-ion Battery first use

I have brought a brand new 9 cell Lithium Ion battery for my lenovo thinkpad T61 laptop. I read the instruction for charging the battery in the following URL.
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=PFAN-3QNQJN#New
    It says,
If your battery is brand new and you are charging it for the first time, your battery may not be charged to full capacity due to characteristics of chemicals in the cell. To obtain maximum performance, all chemical materials in the battery must be fully activated. In order to achieve this:
    * Cycle the battery (fully charge, then fully discharge) three times.
    * Cycling the battery three times is also recommended if you have stored the battery for a few months.
It also says the following, which is contradicting.
"Do not deep-discharge Lithium Ion batteries."
So how do I charge/discharge it for the first time? Can I charge my Li-ion battery to 100% and then discharge it to 0% three times?
    Please suggest.
    Thanks,
    netboy

There is a battery guage reset option in lenovo power manager that does this automatically, but if you want to really be sure you're doing it throughly, here is a good technique.
Plug in the new battery to charge but don't boot up the laptop. Let it charge for 12-24hrs, then use the laptop, make sure it works and disable all timers and warnings and run it on battery, running it as low as you can get it (usually 1-2%), then boot to bios and let it sit until the screen does dead. You're now as close to 0% as you can get. From there, repeat the first step, charging it with the computer off. This time shouldn't require a full 12 hours, but I'd give it a good 6 at least, then repeat the process again.
This is probably "overkill" (more then necessary), but it should make sure you're starting the battery's life with full capacity, which will increase your battery run-time and reduce the gradual performance loss that these batteries suffer with age.
If you don't want to go through all this work, then use the battery guage reset option in power manager.
ps. The warning about deep discharge is because there are some cases where the batteries controller could think there is an unsafe condition and disable the battery, making it unusable. I wouldn't worry about that since it's new and under warranty, but I would be careful running a battery below 1% if it's out of warranty, unless you're trying to restore it to a useable condition, in which case you don't have much to lose. I just had a battery that had 11% usable, and this proceedure got it upto 55%, which is all I really needed. It's plenty to protect from a power outage, or to move the unit from one room to another, and I use that battery to save wear/tear on a new one I have that is only used if I want to go off/wire.

To use itunes 10.7 you need to have Snow Leopard operating system installed
    These are the system requirements
    System Requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
If you can run Snow Leopard you need to purchase it

  • Battery Life on a new vs old battery

Hi I've just bought the HP Pavilion g4 (1100au) and ran the battery check utility.
I noticed that the battery is already 6 months old. How does this affect the life and capacity of the battery? And will the warranty cover the fact that the battery is already 'old' at purchase? (E.g. if it's below expected performance for a 1 year-old battery one year after purchase, will the warranty replace the battery?)
Although there is no mention on the HP site, some online stores selling HP Pavilion are claiming a battery usage time of just over 4 hours (not using dvd drive or playing graphic-intensive games). Is this correct? What should I expect in a year's time, in 2 years' time and in 3 years' time?
    many thanks

Any site about battery life and usage will tell you that it depends on the number of charge cycles and the level of charge that you keep the battery at.
If you keep a battery at 100% it will decrease the life significantly.  That's why a new battery will ship with a charge of say 50% or 40%.
Getting 1000 cycles or even 500 cycles out of a Li-ion battery is overly optimistic, at best.  Older batteries would degrade over time until the MAh would go to 0. They would also heat up during charge cycles and have minor shorts in them which would be disregarded by the battery board.  A short in a battery is a major problem.
Nowadays, batteries have smart chips in them, a temp monitoring diode, lots of safeties.  If the smart chip detects the smallest defect in a battery, it will just shut it down.  That's why you see seemingly good batteries just all of a sudden stop working.  Once the Mah rating gets down to about 50%, a battery could just shut down at any time.
Aftermarket batteries don't have these safeties built-in to them.  Most of them don't even have a temp diode. They just show a static temp all the time.  So, they could short out and start a fire, they could overheat and take out your laptop charging system or worse.  I've seen worse, it's not pretty.
I don't do anything to increase the life of my batteries, I just keep them at 100% charge and use them.  I'm lucky if I get two years use out of a battery.  Usually I get one to one and a half years out of them. After about 100 charge cycles, they start to degrade the mAh rating.  If they make it to 50% without shutting down, I just replace them.
Batteries aren't even considered a component anymore, they're considered a disposable commodity.

  • Why did my new Black SR 2.2 come with li-ion battery and not li polymer?

    Isnt li-polymer better?

I believe all MacBooks have used lithium polymer batteries. If you are asking because your battery says "Lithium Ion"... Lithium polymer batteries are a type of lithium ion battery... so technically, they are still lithium ion batteries. The labeling can be a little confusing.

  • Battery of new iPad3 updated with iOS6 takes longer to charge

My new iPad3 whose battery was alright when it was running on iOS5. But when I updated the OS to 6, it started taking much longer time to recharge. Is there any suggestion on this issue? Thanks in advance.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Does it hurt to leave the MBP with Lithium Ion battery plugged in?

I have been told by the local Apple Store Genius Bar that I should cycle the Lithium Ion battery down and then charge it back up to increase battery life.  I thought that this was not necessary with a Lithium Ion battery.  What is the truth here?  I use my MBP on my desk most of the time and it is easier to keep it plugged in.
Does it really affect battery life?

    tonefox,
Some of your recommendations are out of date:
It is suggested you run it down until the phone powers down and then charge it right up to 100% occasionally. But that is only to recalibrate the oercentage readout.
OP has an MacBook Pro, not a phone, and User calibaration ceased to exist with the 2009 MacBook Pros according to this article:

    To veehbg,
Anna's link to that artilce is very important to good battery life. I've been around here a long time and the number of batteries that failed early from lack of use far exceeds those that failed for any reason when the usage patterns outlined in that article were followed. i try to run my Mac portables on battery for 30 mins to a hour a day to keep thenm exercized. So dar, so good!

  • Ipod Classic Li-Ion battery swapped with Li-Poly. Can I still charge with Ipad cord?

I have a 5th Generation 30GB Ipod Video that needed a new battery. I replaced the factory Lithium-Ion battery with a 3.7V 580MaH Lithium-Polymer battery. I used to charge the Ipod battery with a 10 Watt 5.1V Ipad charger, can I still do this with the new Li-Poly battery? (I've heard the Li-Poly can catch on fire if I don't use correct voltage )

You don't need to buy one, even if yours is not limited edition, your Zen Micro should have come with one "removeable rechargeable Li-Ion Battery". Did yours not come with a battery?

  • Lithium Ion Battery Help plea

I was wondering how does the recharging Lithium Ion battery works? (eg:4hrs of batter life, does it run out in 4hours? or 4hours of useing the item? so power doesnt run out while it being closed?)
    please help and thanks all!

EQ might be wonders to some, others might think it's an disturbance to the original music. I think it's great for me since I like to enjoy the music more, even though it is classified as distorting the music, I don't mind at all. Just don't max out your settings.
Having EQ does drain the battery, but not as significant as Smart Volume. EQ will waste about -2 hours on your player.
If you like to touch your player a lot, like to change volume or skip tracks and such, that will drain your battery life more. What I do is I use an in-line volume controller connected to my earphones, then set the volume to good setting. That way I don't use my Micro just to change the volume and waste more battery life.
As for warranty, you must save the receipt from the store you bought it from. If you bought it on ebay, you must have the original owner's receipt and not the receipt you get on paypal. So if the owner bought it at bestbuy and sells it on ebay. You must get his bestbuy receipt. The original receipt is your ticket to your warranty.
You should read the warranty coverage to get most of your questions answers. Most warranty usually covers not at fault problems. They would call those defects or faulty to begin with. If there is something you don't understand about it, ask more questions here.
If one day your player freezes up and you can't fix it, that would be covered by the warranty. However, headphone jacks breaking, dropping it, and anything that damages it physically might not be covered on warranty. At this point, call Creative and see what they want to do. Usually they would take it in, but I don't know why.

  • General LI-ION Battery Quest

    Hi All,
I have heard conflicting stories about running your battery down all the way and then re-charging it. Some say that's the way to go so you don't set a "memory" in your battery, others say that will decrease the life span.
Does anyone have any actual proof of either argument? Also, does this go across the board (MP3, Cell Phones, etc)?
    Thanks!
