Self or powered generic USB port, works on every OS except Leopard...

I've got a puzzling one.
I just ordered some nice 4 port USB hubs, that run on bus power, or self powered with an AC adapter.
First thing I did was plug it into my MacBook, and plug in my external HD and ram drive. They did not mount.
So I grabbed the AC adapted, un plugged everything, plugged the hub to AC, then to MacBook then toys into hub... nothing. I thought it was a dud.
I tried it on a PC, works, first time. So I took it to a Titanium G4 running Ubuntu, and it mounted the drives in seconds. Back to MacBook with leopard.. no luck.
So it works on Mac hardware, just not on Mac OS X? I bought a dozen for Xmas gifts!
I does show under profiler as a USB 2.0 Hub.
But nothing I plug into it shows.
Tips, hints, comments, are appreciated.

But this time.. its the OSs fault. Its software.
Yes it is the software. Leopard software plus your computer does not support your USB hub. You are correct.
The hardware works on other OSs, and its know leopard is having issues on USB.
I hope Apple takes care if this soon.
Again, have you contacted the USB manufacturer and asked if it specifically works with Leopard?
Not all USB hubs work with Leopard. Not all external flashdrives work with Leopard. Not all routers work with Leopard.

thanks for the replies.

  • I did factory install on my hp probook 4520s and usb ports worked

did factory instasll usb ports worked after restarting it saids usb ports cannot start in deviice mangager

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

edmeister; thanks for trying to help. I reset the printer per the instructions you provided and also checked that I wasn't printing to file. • WRT110 works for every website except ONE after login, help please

    I have a WRT110 version 1.0
It works for every website, except one. And it works for that one website just fine, until I login. When I enter my username/password it accepts it then redirects me to the companies landing page. I can see that because the URL loading changes and it shows the Title in the page which indicates it connected, but then it just sits there 'loading', in the status bar I see the message: "Waiting for tools.domain.com... to load" or something like that. and it takes like 5 to 10 minutes, no joke, then it loads.
If I connect my computer directly to the modem and bypass the router, then it loads just fine, very fast like everything else.
But then when I re-connect my router and refresh the page, it does it again, takes forever, but I can instanly see the title of the page in the title bar.
It works on every computer that I connect trough the mobile hotspot on my 4G verizon phone. but if it is through the router, every computer takes 5 to 10 minutes. Literrally.
Anyone have this happen to them? If so, how did you fix it?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Try the following settings:
    # Open up the browser on the desktop and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page…
    # Lower the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) from 1500 to 1400 or less (usually found on your router's main/ basic setup page)
    # Then click on Security tab disable SPI Firewall Protection, uncheck Filter Anonymous Internet Requests...
    Now check the connectivity status.

  • How do I make the wired keyboard's USB ports work properly in windows? (Eg. Powered)

I will begin by saying that this tutorial:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8kVWy8Qf7A
...does not work. Because on my windows 7 bootcamp install, there are no "generic usb hubs" listed in device manager. The keyboard shows up as a Composite device. I still tried adding the regedit, but it didnt work.
So does anyone else know how to fix the powered usb ports on the Wired apple keyboard, in windows 7?

    Anyone?

  • How to get USB ports work on Portege M400?

I am not able to get memory sticks, cameras and iPods recognized when plugged into the USB port of my M400.
I have updated all the windows software and all the drivers that I can find.
When a device is plugged in the found new hardware dialogue box comes up - but of course a driver is never found.
I have explored the forum extensively and tried deleting the USB driver in the hope that on reboot the drivers would reinstall correctly - they did not - in fact the system does not seem to be able to find the USB driver at all and I now get a lot of error messages and unknown hardware trying to install.
I have a 1 day old backup - an image done using Aronis true image - in trying to restore this I need to be able to boot from the CD ROM - this certainly does not happen with my current set up - how do I do this - presumably I have to change something in the BIOS - how do I access the BIOS - the manual is notably short on info here.
So two basic problems - how do I get the USB ports to work - it is definitely a problem with computer as everything works fine when I try these devices on other computers.
And get how do I get the CD ROM set up to boot from a bootable CD?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions - this has been an ongoing problem that is beginning to become rather vexing.

    Hi
First of all this is not a hardware problem but simply software issue.
I see you have tried to install different external USB devices. Most of these devices need special software which is always bundled with the device.
I dont know what you have installed and removed from the system but it looks like you have messed the whole OS.
In this case I would recommend installing the OS from the recovery CD.
To boot from the CD you have to insert the CD into the CD/DVD drive and press the F12 button immediately after notebook powering. This procedure should enable the booting menu from which you could choose the right boot device (ODD).
Note; the USB drivers are provided by Windows operating system.
Furthermore if you want to use your iPod you have to install the iTunes software! Without this software the iPod does not work!!!
    Bye

  • No usb ports work, can't instal usb 3 driver

I received an HP Elitebook 8540w laptop from work, the hardrive was wiped with just the OS installed (windows 7 pro 64bit). I downloaded and installed all applicable drivers from here.  Everything seems to work except the usb ports.  There are three usb 2.0  ports on the left and two usb 3.0 ports on the right.  None of them will recognize devices installed in them.  My usb optical mouse's laser will flash for a second when it's plugged in and my external drive (1TB Passport) will spin up but never shows in nMy Computer as a accessible drive. Device Manager shows 2 Generic USB Hubs, 2 Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controllers, and 2 USB Root Hubs.  Comparing this to my other Elitebook 8540w it is missing a Renesa USB 3.0 Host Controller Hub.  THis was one of the drivers installed with the others above but it's not showing anywhere.  I've since removed and reinstalled this driver several times with no changes. Runing the USB 3.0 Host Controller Uitility that installs with this driver gives a "USB 3.0 Host Controller not found error." Please help!

Hi, Please check your IT deparment, they may disable USB ports elsewhere. My working laptops (all of them) have same "problem", my IT department even disabled C: drive, optical drive I can't see them anywhere. I can't see Devive Manager. I can only use USB ports to charge my phone or tablet. Regards.

  • Mid 2011 Macbook Air - Yosemite keyboard and trackpad stopped working, the only button that worked was the power button, only one USB port works.

    I have a Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
    Upgraded to Yosemite last week.
Three days ago I was using my Macbook Air for the first time since upgrading to Yosemite. I had been using my Macbook Air for approximately 30 minutes, I was using safari and the keyboard and trackpad stopped working (would not respond). The only button that worked was the power button.
I rebooted and they were still not working. I plugged in a USB mouse and external USB keyboard, only one USB port would work (the Left USB port if looking at the screen) so I had to swap between keyboard and mouse.
After logging in there is a bluetooth icon at the top of the screen with a sawtooth line through it. Bluetooth is unavailable and the bluetooth icon is missing from the system preferences menu.
If I run a hardware test by holding D (on USB keyboard) at startup it says that no problems are found and at the conclusion of the test the keyboard and trackpad start working again. When I log on the bluetooth is working again.
I shut down the Macbook Air and when I started it again the keyboard and trackpad and right side USB ports were all not working again. I logged in using the USB keyboard and mouse and the bluetooth not available sawtooth icon had returned.
I ran the hardware test again and at the conclusion of the test the trackpad and keyboard started working again.
I have tried deleting com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and com.apple.Bluetooth.plist.lockfile from /Library/Preferences/ and tried resetting SMC and Power Functions but this did not fix the issue. The only thing that seems to work is running a hardware test - obviously I don't want to do this every time I use the computer.
I do not believe any hardware is faulty/damaged - I think it has something to do with bluetooth/Yosemite.
I do not have the Macbook with me at the moment, if you have suggestions that I can try or additional checks/info you require please let me know and I can get back to you.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi!
I have exactly the same problem, and I can't find any solution.
I can't even track down the root of the problem: the Bluetooth/Wifi module? The trackpad? The keyboard/top case? The logicboard?
I've tried all the usual: SMC/PRAM reset, clean install, kext cache clearing.
    Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!

  • Left most usb port works with usb 3 devices but not with usb 2 devices

Can someone enlighten me on this issue? I have a MBP mid 12 that seems to have issues with usb 2 devices such iPods, HHDs, etc. The same port works fine with usb 3 devices. I have tried several solutions but not avail such as resetting the SMC, PROM, disconnecting the battery and reinstalling OS X from scratch. Is there anything Im missing? I still don't believe is a hardware issue but something wrong in the firmware...

  • GS70 2QE - Help needed.... non of my USB ports work :(

    Hi guys and gyals...
First time posting here and I wish it was in a positive light but unfortunatley I have an error on my laptop thats preventing me from using it.
So I purchased a GS70 2QE with 970m and 4720 processor. I was very happy for the first two days with its performance until the time I had to use the USB ports. I realise that non of them work at all. Im normally quite good at solving tech issues but this one is going beyond me. Ive done updates on all intel/windows/nvidia drivers as far as I can tell, plus Ive checked the BIOS for usb settings and they are all enabled. Ive switched off the power saving for usb function as well as doing TWO complete reinstalls of windows and still I have no usb.
On the device manager all usb devices seem errorless except one... 'unknown USB device (link in compliance mode)', might I add that nothing is plugged in at this time. Clicking on this brings up the following:
"Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
The SuperSpeed link to the USB device keeps going to an error state Compliance. If the device is removable, remove the device and then disable/enable from device manager to recover."
Ive attempted to uninstall all usb devices and reboot yet windows just reinstalls the same things and I get the same issue.
Now unfortunatley MSI arent so great. Ive called their UK support number 4 times and its just rang through after 30 mins each time. I have also sent an email to support.... no response.... What the hell is this all about... when I purchase a machine thats this expensive I kinda expect some support value.
Anyway Im in limbo now, cant work, cant game, cant do anything but browse the net with my trackpad. Other than this issue Im happy with the laptop.

Im on win 8.1 out of the box. On 8.1 page theres no drivers for usb 3.0. Now I know there is a problem whereby intel havent released drivers for usb 3.0, all drivers are being given by microsoft as I understand, and the only work around is to use win 7 drivers that are edited. Now I have tried this and while the extensibile host controller accepts the new driver it still doesnt make the ports work. Im hoping that this issue with intel and usb 3.0 is the problem as I would like to solve this out as a software problem as opposed to sending it off for a hardware fix.
After your post I downloaded the win7 usb 3.0 drivers and eventually edited them as per this page:
Google search: plugable windows 8 and host controllers
As I stated above, no luck....

  • USB Ports work Intermittantly on Pavilion Notebook

I have a HP Pavilion dv7-2270us Entertainment Notebook PC that is running Windows 7. The USB ports seem to work intermittantly. There are two regular USB ports on the left hand side and one on the right. I have an iPhone, Adidas miCoach, and wireless mouse that I usually have plugged in, and lately nothing is recognized.
Sometimes I get an error that the USB device is not recognized, sometimes I get nothing at all as though the ports aren't even there.
I have tried taking out the battery, replacing and rebooting. I have also tried uninstalling the USB Root Hub, and then the Root Hub plus controllers. When I did this it seemed like it worked - I plugged my mouse in and it worked! I plugged my iPhone in and now nothing works again.
I have Norton 360 Installed (in case that is an issue), and I also have some old Sony Ericksson software that I've recently uninstalled because someone told me that it wreaked havoc on their machine in terms of their device drivers.
The laptop is just out of warranty (Dec 2010) so this is a relatively new machine. But I love all my gadgets and need to be able to use them all!

Right Click on all devices which are recognized as unknown and Choose Uninstall one by one.
Please ensure you also do this for any and every item under Universal serial bus controllers as well. After this restart your computer and you should be good to go.

  • If my left USB port works, will a Left I/O Board replacement fix my issue?

I recently bought a Macbook Pro 2.33GHz off of craigslist. The seller made it seem like the issue was a dead battery because it would not take a charge. I have been looking online and it seems like the Left I/O board could be the issue. I have no problem buying one of these and replacing it myself, but I want to know if that could be the issue even though my left USB port and headphone jack works (part of the same board).

    Hi acceler8,
before making a decision why not simply take the battery for testing at a local Apple AASP or store or try it in another MBP? If the battery proves to be the cause of the problem, then a new I/O board is not likely to do much good. If the battery is fine, then the I/O board would be one of the candidates as the cause of the problem. But a "battery that won't take a charge" usually results from either it being defective, OR from it having been allowed to discharge to a point where its own built in microprocessor is no longer able to operate (in the latter case they can sometimes be revived, if they have't been left too long).
But it is far easier/cheaper to get the battery tested first, than to go to the work and expense of replacing the i/o board and then find you you simply really needed a new battery anyway!
If the computer runs fine off the mains power supply it is unlikely to be the I/O. More likely to be the battery or the logicboard.
    Cheers
    Rod
